Welcome to The Daily, where we study the Bible verse by verse, chapter by chapter, every day. We are about to begin our next study and move into the Old Testament. We will begin with the book of Hosea. Hosea confronts divided hearts and exposes what we truly love. This means it is time to get your next Scripture Journal from our website for this study. If you are a Project23 partner giving $35/month or more, we have already sent this to you in the mail. Our shout-out today goes to Edward Janowiak from Highland Ranch, CO. Thanks for your partnership in Project23. Our text today is 1 Corinthians 16:1-4. Now concerning the collection for the saints: as I directed the churches of Galatia, so you also are to do. On the first day of every week, each of you is to put something aside and store it up, as he may prosper, so that there will be no collecting when I come. And when I arrive, I will send those whom you accredit by letter to carry your gift to Jerusalem. If it seems advisable that I should go also, they will accompany me. — 1 Corinthians 16:1-4 What does resurrection faith look like? After fifty-seven verses on resurrection glory in Chapter 15, Paul talks about money. And that is not accidental. Resurrection hope does not make Christians abstract in their practice. It should make us practical. The Corinthians were instructed to give regularly. Systematically. Proportionally. "Each one as he may prosper." This is not emotional manipulation. It is disciplined stewardship. Notice who this giving supports. The saints. The church. It's a gospel partnership across the region. Paul is organizing a relief offering for believers in Jerusalem. The Gentile church supports the Jewish church. Theology becomes generosity. Doctrine becomes dollars. Unity becomes action. Resurrection people should never be close-fisted with the generous life and blessings that God has afforded them. If Christ is risen and eternity is secure, then natural resources (i.e., money) loses its ultimate grip. Believers never hoard what they cannot keep. Believers invest in what will outlast them. Giving to God's work is not a side note in Christian maturity. It is further evidence that you believe the kingdom is real. And Paul adds accountability to his command. Trusted men will carry the gift. Paul may go with them. Resurrection faith produces transparent generosity. DO THIS: Set aside a specific, intentional gift this week for the work of the Lord. Don't wait for emotion. Plan it. Pray over it. Give it. ASK THIS: Does my spending reflect resurrection hope—or present fear? Am I giving proportionally to how God has prospered me? Do I see generosity as worship—or as loss? PRAY THIS: Lord, you gave your Son for me. Teach me to hold my resources loosely and invest in what advances your kingdom. Make my generosity a reflection of my hope in the risen Christ. Amen. Welcome to The Daily, where we study the Bible verse by verse, chapter by chapter, every day. Read more about our mission to teach every verse of the bible in what we call Project23. Grab your Hosea Scripture Journal. Our text today is Hosea 8:7: This is #6 of The 7 Most Shocking Verses in Hosea. If you missed the video, check it out. For they sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind. The standing grain has no heads; it shall yield no flour; if it were to yield, strangers would devour it. — Hosea 8:7 Some choices feel small when you make them. That is why this verse is so sobering. "They sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind." The Vince Miller Revised Version (VMRV) would read this way. "These fools chase after the breeze and get hit by a category 5 hurricane." Israel has gotten to the point where they treat sin like it is nothing. A little compromise. A little rebellion. A little idolatry. A little drift from God. It seemed light, manageable, and insignificant—like sowing the breeze. But a small breeze can be the first sign of a hurricane. Getting back to the analogy in the text—seeds grow. Patterns worsen. Habits harden. Desires develop. Consequences multiply. What was once minor becomes a force strong enough to blow down or uproot everything around you. That is the meaning of the whirlwind. They planted lightly but harvested violently. But Hosea adds another picture to the analogy. Their grain would produce nothing useful. No heads. No flour. No nourishment. And even if something did grow, strangers would consume it. In other words, all their effort would be in vain. This is one of the hardest truths about chasing the wind of sin: sin not only brings destruction later. It often steals produce now. It drains you of peace, clarity, joy, trust, stability, and usefulness long before visible collapse arrives. You see this truth all the time. A careless tongue becomes a broken relationship. Private lust becomes public damage. Financial greed becomes inner emptiness. Neglected prayer becomes spiritual weakness. Small dishonesty becomes a divided life. How many times do we have to see it and experience it to understand it? No one wants a whirlwind in their life. But they chase the breeze, ignorant of the whirlwind. And this principle also works in a more positive and spiritual direction. Small obedience has a wind and a whirlwind. A daily prayer. A quiet act of integrity. A hidden choice to resist temptation. A faithful return to Scripture. A humble apology. A consistent step toward God. Those winds blow, and those seeds grow. So what are you planting right now? Because today's choices are tomorrow's harvest. Do not be fooled by what seems small. Plant one small habit that honors God today. DO THIS: Choose one small habit you need to stop sowing and one small act of obedience you need to start planting today. ASK THIS: What am I planting in my life right now? Where have I treated sin like something small? What seed of obedience needs to be planted today? PRAY THIS: God, help me take small choices seriously. Keep me from sowing what destroys and teach me to plant what leads to life. Amen. PLAY THIS: "Take My Life and Let It Be"

Think about your favourite records. Go ahead. Chances are, one of the first things that popped into your head was the album cover. And it makes sense...who hasn't studied an album jacket while listening to a record?  Or scanned the track listing, or read the liner notes or credits?  How many of you have bought an album solely based on the cover art? The artwork colors how we hear the music, and, likewise, the music informs how we interpret the artwork.  Either way, when done effectively, the two are intertwined. But don't take it from us.  This week, we have one of THE greatest creative art directors in music history joining as our Third Lad.  There's a near certainty that you have the iconic work of John Kosh sitting in your record collection - and it's absolutely staggering list of credits since the late ‘60s.  For starters, how about his work as with The Beatles' Apple Records, like Abbey Road, Let It Be, or John & Yoko's Wedding Album? Or how about Who's Next?  Get Your Ya-Ya's Out?  Hotel California?  Out Of The Blue, featuring his familiar ELO spaceship logo?  In fact, he is the only Art Director to have worked with The Beatles, The Stones, and The Who.  That's not enough for you?  Among the hundreds of album covers Kosh has designed, there are also familiar sleeves for Ringo Starr, Rod Stewart, Marvin Gaye, James Taylor, Jimmy Buffet, Donovan, Aerosmith, Family, The Moody Blues, Badfinger, 10,000 Maniacs, T. Rex, and so, so many more.  And, oh yeah, the four decade string of gorgeous covers he did for Linda Ronstadt, three of which have earned him Grammys. Aside from album covers, there's artwork for singles, books, TV, film, posters, and billboards - like, for example, the simple but incredibly effective John & Yoko campaign declaring WAR IS OVER…if you want it.  Listen as Kosh recounts stories from his fabled career and discusses his Top 5 Album Covers (other than his own). Welcome to The Daily, where we study the Bible verse by verse, chapter by chapter, every day. Our shout-out today goes to Patrick Greer from Corry, PA. Thanks for your partnership in Project23. We cannot do this without donors like you. Our text today is 1 Corinthians 9:24-26. Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. — 1 Corinthians 9:24-26 Paul now shifts metaphors—from mission to muscle, from adaptability to discipline. After explaining how he flexes wisely for the sake of the gospel, Paul makes something unmistakably clear: flexibility without discipline leads to drift. Freedom without restraint leads to confusion. Paul assumes something most modern readers resist. Strength is not indulgence. Strength is self-control. Athletes don't train by accident. They submit themselves to intentional limits. They regulate what they eat, how they sleep, what they pursue, and what they avoid. They say no to many good things so they can say yes to the one thing that matters most. Paul applies this logic directly to the Christian life—and especially to how believers engage the surrounding culture. He does not merely discipline his behavior. He disciplines his theology and practice. He disciplines how he engages and when he refrains. He knows that careless words, reactive arguments, and unrestrained engagement can undermine the very gospel he is trying to advance. This matters enormously in a moment when moral clarity is fading, and public debate is loud, emotional, and often unhinged. Many believers feel pressured to engage constantly, respond instantly, and argue endlessly. But Paul models a better way. He refuses to run aimlessly. He refuses to shadowbox cultural outrage. He engages with purpose, restraint, and direction. Self-control, then, is not weakness—it is wisdom. It is the discipline that keeps conviction sharp and witness clear. Paul runs with intention because eternity is real. The prize is imperishable. And a life without restraint cannot carry that weight. Being strong enough to say no is not retreat. And sometimes this is saying no to ourselves. DO THIS: Identify one area where you need to practice restraint in how you engage culture, media, or debate for the sake of clarity and faithfulness. ASK THIS: Where might my engagement be reactive instead of disciplined? How does self-control strengthen—not weaken—my witness? What limits would help me run with greater purpose? PRAY THIS: Lord, train me to live with intention. Give me discipline in thought, speech, and action so my life reflects the weight and worth of the gospel. Amen. It's easy to get worked up about everything happening "out there." We shake our heads at culture, critique the headlines, and grow frustrated with people who don't follow Jesus—as if their choices should shock us. But before Paul gives direction, he gives clarity: you can't expect the world to live by a standard it never agreed to. For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? — 1 Corinthians 5:12 Paul tells the Corinthians to stop policing people who don't claim Christ. Unbelievers behaving like unbelievers is not a crisis. It's expected. What is a crisis is when believers behave like unbelievers and no one says a word. When Christians focus more energy on condemning the outside world than shepherding their own community, everything gets upside down. Jesus didn't police the world—He moved toward it. Paul didn't police the world—he preached to it. The early church didn't police the world—they loved it and reached it. But inside the church? They confronted sin, practiced discipline, and protected one another with humility and truth. They judged behavior not to shame but to restore. That's the difference. Many believers today get trapped in endless cycles of judging outsiders. We complain about politics, cultural decay, Hollywood, the news, and the morality of people who don't even claim to follow Christ. Meanwhile, friends we love are drifting, compromising, and slipping into patterns that are far more dangerous—and we stay silent. We end up policing the wrong people and ignoring the ones God called us to shepherd. The real problem isn't worldly people acting worldly. The real problem is God's people acting worldly and no one having the courage to intervene. Policing outside breeds resentment. Policing inside breeds restoration. So what does it look like to lovingly "police" believers in a biblical way? Ask honest questions instead of assuming everything is fine: "Hey, you seem distant lately. How are you doing spiritually?" Address what you see, not what you hear: "This is something I've noticed myself, and I care too much not to bring it up." Correct gently and clearly: "I'm saying this because it's dangerous for your walk, and I want to help." Refuse to normalize what God condemns: "I can't pretend this is okay. I care about you too much." Aim for restoration, not embarrassment: "I'm with you in this, and I'm not giving up on you." This is policing with a shepherd's heart—firm, honest, and aimed at rescue rather than ridicule. It's the kind of accountability that leads believers back to health and strengthens the whole church. DO THIS: Choose one believer in your life who may be drifting. Pray, reach out, and take a loving step toward honest conversation or gentle correction. ASK THIS: Where have I spent more time judging the world than shepherding believers? Who in my life needs loving accountability right now? What step could lead someone I love toward restoration instead of ruin? PRAY THIS: Father, help me stop policing the world and start loving, correcting, and restoring the believers You've placed around me. Give me wisdom and courage to speak truth with humility and protect the purity of Your church. Amen. PLAY THIS: "Take My Life and Let It Be"

Originally released September 23, 2023 No less an authority than Mark Lewisohn knows that the skiing scene in "Help!" was filmed in Stowe VT, during the 1997 Winter X-Games, exclusively on ESPN. But before (ahem, #apres) skiing was a very Beatles activity, Stowe was known as a small British boys school (Ringo! Ringo!), where the Beatles gave one of their longer and most interesting concerts whilst on the cusp of British fame. Recently, a tape surfaced of the mostly complete show, and like the Star Club release in 1970's, this one is truly a mammoth moment in Beatles history. Tony & T.J. gab fab on the concert, the set list, and the immense historical significance. And because they're morons, they also ponder:

Following his work for The Opera House, he met John Lennon and Yoko Ono in 1968 as they had admired his work as art director of Art & Artists magazine. They invited him to meet them one evening at Hammersmith Hospital, where Yoko was recuperating. Shortly thereafter they offered him a desk at Apple Records at 3 Saville Row. I opened the show with Balaam, the original for-profit prophet. He was not the last one. We still have plenty today with nice suits, studio lighting, and partner plans "…if you act now!" Balaam took the job, hopped on his donkey, and headed out. God blocked the road. The donkey saw it. Balaam did not. After a few detours and a smashed foot, the donkey finally spoke. And instead of freezing or questioning reality, Balaam argued with her as if this was completely normal. That part always gets me. Did animals talk a lot back then? I live around horses and cattle here in Montana. If one of them said, "Peter, we need to talk," I would like to think I would pause and reconsider a few things. Balaam did not. He snapped right back at the donkey and missed the angel standing in the road. And thinking about it, as a caregiver, do I often do the same thing? I get locked in on what I am trying to do … and miss the very thing God may be using to protect me. Sometimes the obstacle is not the problem. It is the rescue. In the next segment, a listener asked about spiritual attack. I kept it simple. Satan had to ask permission for Job. He had to ask for Peter. He has to ask for us. The enemy does not get an open gate to God's people. I rest more in that truth than in anything I feel on a hard day. Then the show moved from talking donkeys to unpacking boxes. Gracie and I are sorting through years of stored belongings. She remembers exactly where every decorative plate hung in our old kitchen. I sometimes need a leaf blower to find my desk. The process has reminded me how much I hold on to, not only physical things, but guilt, fear, and expectations that weigh more than any box in the house. That led naturally to the hymn for the week, "Take My Life and Let It Be," which Frances Havergal wrote as a kind of spiritual clean-out, offering each part of herself back to God. If the episode has a theme, it is simple. Pay attention. When something in your life suddenly speaks, pause before arguing with it. God may be standing in the road for your good, even if the warning arrives through a stubborn creature with very long ears. Caregiving gets heavier during the holidays. The Beatles produced five films during their time together: A Hard Day's Night, Help!, Magical Mystery Tour, Yellow Submarine, and Let It Be. Some were cinematic successes, and some were not, but―along with subsequent reissues, bonus material, and Peter Jackson's The Beatles: Get Back, a documentary companion to Let It Be―they comprise an endlessly fascinating document of key phases in the group's career. In this comprehensive deep-dive into the band's movies, author and longtime music journalist Steve Matteo follows the origins, filming, and often frenzied fan reception of projects from the 1964 premiere of A Hard Day's Night through 1970's Let It Be to the release of Get Back in 2022. Matteo explores the production process, original theatrical film releases, subsequent VHS, DVD, and Blu-ray releases, and bonus materials, along with the US and UK soundtracks. In addition to copious anecdotes and behind-the-scenes details, he also places these films in their larger context, a period of unprecedented artistic and commercial innovation in British and world cinema. Filled with stories and insights that will satisfy collectors, buffs, and casual fans alike, this is the definitive account of an underappreciated part of the Beatles' creative output. "Reading is Funktamental" is a monthly one-hour show about great books written about music and music-makers. In each episode, host Sal Cataldi speaks to the authors of some of the best reads about rock, jazz, punk, world, experimental music, and much more. Occasionally, the host is joined by notable musicians who have written about their careers. Recent guests have included eccentric British singer-songwriter Robyn Hitchcock, Roxy Music's Phil Manzanera, Traffic co-founder Dave Mason, and Moon Zappa. Expect a great conversation and a playlist of great music to go with it.Sal Cataldi is a musician and writer based in Saugerties. He is best known for his work with his genre-leaping solo project, Spaghetti Eastern Music, and is also a member of the ambient guitar duo, Guitars A Go Go, the poetry and music duo, Vapor Vespers, the jazz ensemble Hari Karaoke Trio of Doom and the quartet, Spaceheater. His writing on music, books and film has been featured in The New York Times, Rolling Stone, PopMatters, Seattle Times, Huffington Post, Inside+Out Upstate NY, and NYSMusic.com, where he is the book reviewer.

Since then, its underwhelming title track has become associated with charity events, social causes, drunk boomer sing-alongs, and is probably the favorite song of the cringiest person you know. But in 2010, the Norwegian travel show Gylne Tider pulled off the impossible by making the song actually entertaining for the first time. With the help of over two dozen celebrities from the '80s and '90s, and a cheap-to-license version of the song intended to raise money following a ferry disaster, the show unintentionally created one of the weirdest videos on YouTube. From Jason Alexander to Ireland's very own Boyzone, no one on the “Let It B-List” was left out of this baffling piece of advertising.Watch Let It Be HEREFollow us on Instagram to stay updated about our monthly live shows!Check out more from Justin here: justindodd.rocks Check out more from Steve here: stevejhward.comdrinkgenies.com

Ugly American Werewolf in London: The Replacements - Tim

By 1985, The Replacements had seen and done a few things. They'd recorded a couple of records (see our review of Let It Be at 40) and been out on some tours. They'd made enough noise that they were signed to major label Sire and were ready to take on the world with bigger shows, music videos and tv appearances. But wait, were they? The boys were still drinking heavily thanks to Bob Stinson and Paul Westerberg's crippling stagefright. They still hated doing any kind of promotion, which they saw as selling out and not punk. And when they finally made it on Saturday Night Live in early 1986 to promote their 1985 classic, Tim, they were banned for life for Westerberg's use of the f word on live tv. However, Westerberg's poignant songwriting and raspy vocals were at the top of their game and Tim is considered a true masterpiece of the 1980s. It may not have even gone gold, but songs like Hold My LIfe, Kiss Me On The Bus and Dose of Thunder not only showed that they could arrange a quality pop song but could address issues that may be in juxtaposition from their hard rockin punk riffs. Swingin Party talks about how hard it is to be an introvert in forced social situations, Little Mascara is the tale of a girl with bad taste in men who loses nothing when her loser guy finally leaves her and Left Of The Dial captures life on the road between college towns for a band trying to make it. Originally, the album had a bad mix. However, thanks to a 2023 remix as part of a box set from Ed Stasium, these songs can now be heard clearly and loud the way they were always supposed to be heard. As Tim turns 40, we celebrate what is likely The Replacements greatest achievement and go track by track to show why everyone should be familiar with this 1985 gem. Last week’s look at what’s been spinning on the Hudson turntable was so fun that I thought we’d do it again. This week’s version, though, differs in that it also includes some digital treats. The announcement from the Numero Group of the upcoming Husker Du box, 1985 The Miracle Year was a no-brainer when it was accompanied by four more new sneak peaks. And I couldn’t stop myself from playing soem of the previously-released rarities that will again feature on the upcoming box set version of The Replacements’ Let It Be. But there are also a couple of great compilation albums that deserved some notice. First off, there’s the latest free release from our friends at Rum Bar Records. The Summer School Sampler features 34 tracks of brand new or recently-released material, and like I said it’s free!  And the 15th volume of Bored Teenagers compiles rare British punk singles from 1976-83! Along with these fun tunes I also aired quite a few more faves that have recently hit my turntable. What’s your favorite from this week’s show? If you happen to follow me on social media (and why wouldn’t you?) you have probably noticed that every week I post a collage of some of the albums I’ve listened to over the course of the week that I note as from “the Hudson Compound”. Well, tonight’s show is an audio version of one of those collages. Every track I played tonight comes from a record that has either been on my turntable, in my earbuds during walks, or blasting in my car as I run errands.  These 32 songs represent almost 60 years of great rock and roll, but there are a couple of somewhat new tunes. First off, earlier this week Rhino Records announced an upcoming box set version of my third favorite album of all time, Let It Be. The 3 CD/4 LP box, which comes out on October 24, includes an entire disc of rarities and outtakes and a full show from The Cubby Bear in Chicago. This announcement was accompanied by one of the outtakes – an alternate version of “Androgynous” that kicks off the show. The other new tunes (at least to me) comes right after that track. A few weeks ago our […]

There is great spiritual depth behind the phrase "Let It Be." It presents the wisdom that resisting reality leads to psychological suffering. By understanding how perception is filtered through the mind and influenced by past experiences, we learn that true freedom lies in allowing experiences to pass through us without clinging or pushing away. Spiritual growth involves learning to relax in the face of discomfort and reclaiming the awareness behind it all—the consciousness that is always present, whole, and free.
