The Snack Leadership podcast was born in 2021, during the height of the pandemic, as a creative way to continue sharing my work when travel was no longer possible. What began as a marketing experiment quickly turned into something much more meaningful.   Over the years, podcasting has become one of my favorite ways to learn, grow, and connect. Through conversations with incredible leaders from around the world, I've had the opportunity to explore leadership in all its forms—navigating anxiety, leading with kindness, setting healthy boundaries, elevating our energy, and thinking strategically about the future.   In this special 5-year celebration episode, I'm sharing the top-listened-to podcast episode from each year of Snack Leadership.  If you were around Portland in the '90s, you probably heard the infectious, upbeat pop tunes of the band Sunset Valley. They toured up and down the West Coast, played in front of big audiences and eventually signed with a big record label. But breakout fame wasn’t in the cards for this group, and the members have since moved on to other things. Now the band is reissuing their record "Boyscout Superhero," and playing a concert to celebrate their 30-year anniversary. What does it actually mean to be vegan? For most people, the answer is simple—until it isn't.This week on Food for Thought (celebrating 20 years!), I explore what happens after someone stops eating animal products…when the (seemingly) neat definition starts running into the messy reality of the world we live in.Most of us don't actually live by strict definitions, but when real-life scenarios arise that defy simple answers, conflict and confusion can follow, leading to questions like:What about plant-based foods made on shared equipment?What about burgers cooked on the same grill as meat?What about taking life-saving medications that may have been tested on animalsWhat about sugar filtered with bone char?And then there's the bigger question underneath all of it: Who gets to decide what “counts” as vegan? After all, this isn't the Boy Scouts, where you take a pledge, earn merit badges, and defer to a Scoutmaster. Why does it feel like that to some people?In this episode, I talk about how an intention rooted in compassion and wellness can unintentionally morph into something else entirely—a purity test.
