Was 'Press to Play' really a failure—or is it one of Paul McCartney's most misunderstood albums? In this episode of Booked On Rock, I sit down with author Luca Perasi to explore the fascinating story behind McCartney's 1986 album Press to Play. Drawing from extensive research and interviews with key figures involved in the project, Luca examines the album's ambitious blend of cutting-edge 1980s production, experimental songwriting, and classic McCartney melodies. We discuss the album's troubled reputation, McCartney's creative partnership with Eric Stewart, the influence of producer Hugh Padgham, the impact of Live Aid and the Michael Jackson catalog controversy, and why Press to Play may deserve a major reappraisal. In this episode of Booked On Rock, we step into the vibrant and transformative world of 1968—a time when music, culture, and creativity were colliding like never before.Author Barry Greenfield joins the show to discuss his novel All You Need Is Courage, the story of Adam Bond, a young Canadian songwriter chasing his dreams in the heart of London's booming music scene. What happens when two musical forces collide at exactly the right moment in time?In this episode of Booked On Rock, I explore the powerful and often overlooked relationship between Bob Dylan and The Beatles—a connection that didn't just influence their music, but helped reshape the direction of rock itself. From Dylan initially dismissing the Beatles as “teenyboppers” to recognizing their deeper artistic potential, to the Beatles immersing themselves in Dylan's songwriting and evolving their lyrics, this is the story of mutual inspiration, competition, and transformation. You'll hear how Dylan's push toward electrification and the Beatles' shift into more introspective, boundary-pushing songwriting were deeply intertwined—and how even years later, the Beatles were still jamming on Dylan songs during the Get Back sessions. This episode features an interview with Jim Windolf, author of Where the Music Had to Go: How Bob Dylan and the Beatles Changed Each Other—and the World, offering insight into the moments, myths, and musical breakthroughs that defined an era.If you've ever wondered how legends influence each other behind the scenes… this is a story you don't want to miss. Titus WelliverTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know actor Titus Welliver. In this episode, we chat about his growing up with a father who was very well know and well respected in the academic & artist community, and how that led to Titus meeting some of the most influential people on the planet. Then we talk about the new television series he is working on called The Westies (MGM+) alongside J.K. Simmons, and others. Then we discuss his playing the title character of Bosch for ten years on the Amazon series Bosch & Bosch: Legacy, as well as reprising that role in Amazon's Ballard. Titus loves this character so much, that when the creator & writer Michael Connelly asked him to read the audiobooks, he jumped at the opportunity. Titus still voices the audiobooks to this day. Along the way, we talk about why Titus decided to study with ALL of the great acting teachers & playwrights of New York, why he has so many tattoos, and of course, the CADS. Titus is the third member of the Character Actors Dinner Society to appear on the show. The CADS is a group of character actors in Los Angeles that occasionally, and in various configurations, have dinner and tell stories to each other; as friends often do. Titus is also part of The Funky Homo Sapiens; a New York based group of likeminded individuals who do roughly that same thing on the East Coast. This episode is a ton of fun, and I can't wait to have Titus on for round 2. Keep your eyes peeled for Titus' new series The Westies on MGM+ sometime in 2026.

I'm welcoming Richard Mills back to the pod today, this time to talk about his book 'The Beatles ad Black Music'. Beginning with the grand narrative of British colonial history pre-Beatles, Richard's book covers the influence of Black music and culture on the Beatles' teenage years in the 1950s, their association with Lord Woodbine, their love of American Rhythm and Blues in the mid-1960s, and extends to a discussion of post-colonial British identity and the lasting effect Black music has had on the Beatles' legacy and continues to have on the solo careers of Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney.
It's this Friday! Ringo Starr and his All-Star Band headline the Memorial Park free concert and fireworks show. Want to go? Here are the details.

It is a privilege to welcome six-time Emmy-nominated filmmaker Alan G. Parker to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast. Before becoming a filmmaker, Alan worked as a press officer via Judy Totton Publicity and later in EMI's catalogue department in London. At EMI, he worked with bands such as Buzzcocks, Stiff Little Fingers, and the Stranglers. He also wrote for magazines and published books about the Clash and Sid Vicious. In 2009, Alan directed Who Killed Nancy? And Monty Python: Almost the Truth – The Lawyers' Cut was nominated for six Emmy Awards. In 2017, he directed the documentary It was Fifty Years Ago Today! The Beatles: Sgt. Pepper & Beyond! Alan G. Parker's latest documentary, Borrowed Time: Lennon's Last Decade, focuses on music legend John Lennon's final years. The film follows the former Beatle as he navigates through the band's breakup while creating revolutionary music and standing at the forefront of anti-war protests that would make him one of the most influential pop culture icons of all-time. Hear musicians, journalists, and the man's close friends set the record straight on the truth behind many famous Lennon moments brought to life by rare archive footage, including never-before-seen interviews. For the first time, the full story of how John and Yoko met is revealed, and watch as the curtain is lifted on the 1981 comeback tour that never came to be. This monumental film is a must-see for Lennon, Beatles, and music fans. On this episode of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Alan G. Parker took us behind the scenes about Borrowed Time's filmmaking process, including the insights he found from the documentary interview subjects who had interacted with John during that time. Borrowed Time: Lennon's Last Decade will be released in theatres on May 2, 2025. Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/jake-s-take-with-jacob-elyachar--4112003/support.

Best-selling and award-winning authors Robert Rodriguez and Jerry Hammack are on the podcast to talk about Ribbons Of Rust: The Beatles' Recording History In Context: Volume 1 - July 1954 Through January 1963.The Beatles' story has been told many times, but often with little focus on their personal experiences during their era. John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, and producer George Martin were influenced by the sounds around them. Ribbons of Rust presents their journey by immersing readers in the music and times they lived in. The first volume, richly illustrated with period artifacts, takes you with The Beatles from their early inspirations to their initial compositions and covers. Rodriguez and Hammack explore how The Beatles developed their sound in Liverpool and Hamburg, drawing on American rock 'n' roll and deeper cultural traditions, ultimately securing a recording contract with EMI. Spanning July 1954 to January 1963, the book details the post-war British music scene and the influences that shaped The Beatles, bringing readers into the studio with them, from early Liverpool recordings to Hamburg sessions.
