Comic Books as Cultural Mirrors - A brief overview of American history from the 1930s to the present focusing on how popular culture and current events were represented in comic books by Christy Blanch (moderator) with color commentary provided by Mark Waid, Louise Simonson, and Walter Simonson. There is nothing easy about making comics, whether it's the art or the storytelling. Just flipping through the first few pages of your favorite story can be enough to intimidate even the hardiest of the artists out there. It really does take a fair amount of chutzpah to want to make comics. But fear not, for there are things out there that may not make it easy for you but can, if nothing else, make it easier. And that's why we at Making Comics were excited to have assembled this group of people ranging from artists to editors, if not both, for the live Gutter Talk panel at this year's Comic Con in San Diego, because we just had a feeling that they would be the ones to provide both inspiration and very useful knowledge. Moderated by the Gutter Talk podcast host Adam Greenfield, the panel consisted of Mark Waid, writer of Daredevil and most recently the Archie comics, Christy Blanch, an educator and also writer for The Damnation of Charlie Wormwood, Chris Miskiewicz, the writer for Thomas Alsop, Rachel Dukes, creator of Frankie Comics, and Calista Brill, a senior editor with First Second Books. See what we mean? This panel was destined to be amazing and it certainly lived up to the billing. Download or stream the show and you'll see what we're talking about. Please also be sure to head over to iTunes and give us a rating and review. What you gain from doing this is tenfold compared to what we get out of it, and this is why we are doing what we are doing. From the new site to the future plans we have in store for everyone, it all becomes more viable when we become more visible. One million points to you if you've heard this one before: "If ya got time to lean, ya got time to clean." No? Well, if you've ever worked in the food industry, it's a popular one. Good thing we don't hear it much making comics. Still, the heart of that message may not be as icy as it sounds. How are we, as artists, scheduling our time? What are we doing to make sure we remain productive artists without burying ourselves by taking on too much work? And should we even say no to opportunities? These were just a few of the questions answered and broken down by the incredible group of artistic minds we had for Week 3 of the Get A Grasp! MOOC panel. On this episode of Word Balloon, John expected a conversation with writer Paul Jenkins about his next volume of the FairyQuest saga with art by Humbert Ramos, but Paul had more on his mind. Given Jimmy Palmiotti's Kickstarter POV from last week's episode, this interview continues the conversation in an interesting way. Then Devin Grayson joins John for the first time to talk about her involvement in Christy Blanch's new Super MOOC about social issues explored through comic books. The Massive Open Online Course at canvas.net starts this week, and Devin will once again be part of the course's message board community and act as Christy's TA . She's also writing a monthly column exploring some of the issues fans are bringing up in conventions and online. We talk about her work in comics, novels, and gaming and some of the controversies she's faced in her writing career.

On today's Word Balloon podcast, we catch up with Jonathan Hickman , who's taking the Avengers into new directions. New Avengers #3 had a startling finish and we talk about it. We also discuss his Image books The Manhattan Projects East Of West (which debuts next month) and the current status/fate of the espionage book Secrets .Then Ball State University Lecturer Christy Blanch talks about her new MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) Gender Through Comics Books. Blanch will have many guest speakers for the class, and the subjects discussed involve comic book history and a sharp look at characters like Lois Lane and Wonder Woman , who both started as capable strong rolemodels in the 1940's only to become lonley-heart single women desperate to marry their beaus in the 1950's. What happened? The male superhero stereotypical portrayals are also examined.
