On this week's episode, Nathan and Chris are joined by former Polygon writers Ryan Gilliam and Cass Marshall, who just launched a new worker-owned video game website, Rogue. It's like Aftermath, but Polygonier. We ask them how the project came together, how things are going so far, and what their pie-in-the-sky goals are for the future. Then, after extolling the virtues of structures that don't force us to always heap attention on the big game of the week, we heap attention on the big game of the week: Silksong. It's finally out, and as expected, it's more Hollow Knight! In other words, it's good, but also very reminiscent of the first game in structure and feel. This puts it somewhat at odds with other Event Releases like Elden Ring, which garnered similar attention to curious non-fans at launch, but managed to offer them something legitimately new compared to Dark Souls. Will the un-Knighted masses bounce off this one, or will they find something to love despite a lack of attachment to the original? And as the video game industry continues to fragment, how many more all-consuming launches like this do we have in us? Finally, we invent a cool uncle who plays Warframe (Warfruncle). Tonight we celebrate the career of Terry Gilliam! What happens when the animator from Monty Python decides to direct movies? You get Terry Gilliam — an American who somehow made the most British films imaginable.Gilliam's fingerprints are all over Monty Python's Flying Circus — those cut-out animations, the grotesque faces, the surreal leaps between worlds. And when he moved into directing, he carried that style with him: cluttered sets, exaggerated characters, satire of authority, and a constant blur between dream and reality. You see it evolve across three films. Time Bandits — childhood fantasy meets biting satire, a boy escaping his consumer-obsessed parents to loot history with dwarves. The Adventures of Baron Munchausen — a sprawling tale of impossible adventures, about how imagination itself becomes resistance in a world closing in. And Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas — Hunter S. Thompson's American nightmare, filtered through Gilliam's absurd, grotesque lens, with Johnny Depp mumbling like a Monty Python character for two straight hours.Gilliam's films are infamous for their production disasters — blown budgets, lawsuits, near career-enders. But that's exactly why he matters. In an age of safe blockbusters, Gilliam shows what happens when you chase imagination at any cost. His movies are messy, personal, and unforgettable.Terry Gilliam isn't just a filmmaker. He's the warning and the inspiration — proof that cinema can still be wild.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

From Cool Tech to Real Change: Grounding Innovation in Reality

Bridging the Gap

What does it take to bring true innovation into one of the world's most risk-averse industries? In this episode of Bridging the Gap, Todd and Ryan unpack how to move from breakthrough technology to real-world adoption. The discussion explores why being honest about where you really are matters more than hype, how simplicity often beats complexity, and why economics ultimately drive scalability. If you've ever wondered how sustainable solutions can shift from pilot projects to global impact, this conversation delivers a grounded look at making change stick. Ryan shares insights on the significance of cement in climate change, the evolution of tech adoption in the industry, and the future of construction. He emphasizes the need for collaboration with traditional cement producers and the importance of financial mechanisms to support innovation.   MEET OUR GUEST Ryan Gilliam is co-founder and CEO of Fortera, a low-carbon cement manufacturer focused on paving the way to zero CO2 cement. Gilliam is a serial entrepreneur who has dedicated his career to solving climate issues. Specifically, Gilliam has focused on decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors like cement, energy, and petrochemicals. He has over 100 granted patents focused on electrochemical, chemical, and materials technologies for the beneficial reuse of carbon emissions, green hydrogen production, and more environmentally friendly chemical manufacturing. In addition to his role at Fortera, Gilliam also serves on the Board of Directors of Verdagy, a company he founded that is innovating advanced electrolysis technology for the large-scale production of green hydrogen.   TODD TAKES Be Honest About Where You Really Are True innovation starts with being brutally honest about your current reality. Don't oversell the data or the promise—know exactly where you stand and what's realistically possible. Grounded in Reality Beats Cool Tech Shiny technology isn't enough. What actually gets adopted is what's practical, scalable, and simple to integrate. Sometimes the smartest move is choosing simplicity over complexity. Economics Drive Scalability Change doesn't scale because it's exciting—it scales because the economics work. For any new process or product to truly take off, it has to compete on cost as much as on performance.   CHAPTERS 00:00 Introduction to Sustainable Cement Innovation 00:54 Ryan's Journey into Climate Sustainability 02:36 Lessons Learned from Early Ventures 04:42 Navigating Risk Aversion in the Cement Industry 06:43 The Importance of Cement in Climate Change 08:50 Transforming Ideas into Reality 11:00 Collaborating with Traditional Cement Producers 12:38 Simplifying Technology for Adoption 16:05 Balancing Innovation and Practicality 17:27 Key Levers for Low Carbon Cement Adoption 19:17 Evolution of Mindset in Tech Adoption 20:49 Future of Construction and Cement 23:02 Myths Surrounding Cement Adoption 24:15 Advice for Innovators in Risk-Averse Industries 26:02 Defining Innovation and Its Impact 28:06 The Need for Financial Mechanisms in Innovation   MORE RESOURCES  Thanks for listening! Cement is one of the most-consumed materials on Earth — second only to water — and it accounts for a whopping eight percent of the world's carbon pollution. What if we could turn this climate villain into a hero? Clean tech innovator and serial entrepreneur Ryan Gilliam reveals his company's surprisingly simple process for transforming waste from the cement-making process back into limestone using existing infrastructure, creating a competitive and eco-friendly product that could pave the way for gigaton-scale climate solutions. After the talk, Sherrell reflects on the market for green cement and highlights other initiatives working to increase transparency and adopt lower-emission products. For a chance to give your own TED Talk, fill out the Idea Search Application: ted.com/ideasearch.Interested in learning more about upcoming TED events? George reached out to us to do a story on how he has doubled and tripled slow days at the restaurant. The conversion was so captivating that we wanted to share it on the podcast. Gilliam set a strategy into motion to turn his slowest days into high-volume sales days. He focused on increasing sales with daily specials one slow day at a time until he covered the entire week. “This kind of aggressive weekday programming has brought in the traffic and revenue we needed on nights that used to be dead,” he says. “I've built out a weekly schedule that gives people a clear reason to visit every single day.”He approached each day with a new special and/or event and shares which days he started with. Uncle G's promotes the days through its social accounts, e-mail and in store. It's designed as weekly programming that Gilliam says people can build into their routines. The conversation on social media led into a genuine talk on AI and advanced technology and their role in small independent pizzerias.Read our article with George “Doubling to Tripling a Restaurant's Slow Day Sales” at https://pizzatoday.com/topics/brand-marketing/doubling-to-tripling-a-restaurants-slow-day-sales/Learn more about Uncle G's Pizza at https://unclegspizza.com/ and on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/unclegspizza/  Show Notes:Find out who is this year's Pizzeria of the Year at https://PizzaToday.com.Be on the lookout in your inbox for our annual Pizzeria Operator Trends & Outlook Survey!

Show Summary:Host Bill Donohue begines the show by welcoming author Stephen W. Dittmore, who presents his latest work, Jim Gilliam: The Forgotten Dodger. This episode elucidates the life and accomplishments of Jim Gilliam, a pivotal yet underappreciated figure in Dodgers history, who played an integral role in seven World Series and earned four championship rings. Dittmore articulates the reasons behind Gilliam's obscurity in baseball history, despite his significant contributions and statistical prominence. Later, Bill talks with writer and historical consultant Marshall Garvey, who unveils insights from his book, Interstate '85: The Royals, The Cardinals, and the Show-Me World Series. Garvey's narrative weaves together the cultural and sporting tapestry of the 1985 World Series, capturing the essence of a momentous event that resonated far beyond the confines of the baseball field. Together, these discussions offer a profound exploration of baseball's rich history and its enduring impact on American culture.Show Details:The dialogue commences with the esteemed host, Bill Donohue, who warmly welcomes Stephen W. Dittmore, the author of the recently published tome, "Jim Gilliam: The Forgotten Dodger." This text seeks to illuminate the life and career of Jim Gilliam, a pivotal yet oft-overlooked figure in the annals of baseball history. Dittmore elucidates the reasons behind Gilliam's moniker as the 'Forgotten Dodger,' arguing that while he may not be a household name like others from the legendary Brooklyn Dodgers, his contributions to the team are significant. He played an instrumental role in seven World Series and secured four championship titles, yet paradoxically, he remains absent from the discussions surrounding Hall of Fame candidacy. Dittmore's compelling narrative delves into Gilliam's background, tracing his journey from the Negro Leagues to becoming the National League Rookie of the Year in 1953, and highlights his remarkable versatility as a player who excelled in multiple positions. The conversation underscores the need to revisit and reassess the legacies of such players, ensuring that their contributions are duly recognized and celebrated.Following the enlightening discussion with Dittmore, the focus transitions to another literary talent, Marshall Garvey. He introduces his work, "Interstate '85: The Royals, The Cardinals, and the Show-Me World Series," which captures the cultural and historical significance of the 1985 World Series. This narrative intricately weaves together the threads of sports and popular culture, reflecting on how the events of that year transcended mere baseball to encapsulate a unique historical moment. Garvey elaborates on the evocative imagery of Interstate 70, which serves as a metaphor for the journeys undertaken by the players and the intertwined fates of the Kansas City Royals and the St. Louis Cardinals. His book not only recounts the series itself but also delves into the aftermath and the enduring legacy it left on both franchises. The discussion highlights the importance of remembering these historical contexts, as they shape the identities of teams and their cities, making baseball a significant cultural touchstone beyond the game itself.Takeaways: Jim Gilliam, despite his significant contributions to the Dodgers, remains largely unrecognized in baseball history, receiving no Hall of Fame votes. The 1985 World Series, marked by the infamous missed call by umpire Don Denkinger,...

It also happens to be one of Jeff's favorite movies as well. While the film certainly belongs in the "Christmas adjacent" category of Christmas movies, there is nevertheless a richness to it that warrants a long discussion on the film's artistic merit, its place in film history and the role it played in completely disrupting the studio system at the time of its release. It's not a movie for everybody and was never meant to be, but Gilliam's off-center vision of "the future" keeps gaining relevance and becomes more prescient with each passing decade. A very Happy Christmas! The film also rightfully earns its place in... the Book.  Book movies covered: "Brazil" (1985) "Juliet of the Spirits" (1965) "The Killing Fields" (1984)

Can you believe that for half a century student bars the length and breadth of the land have resounded to the excruciating cries of "Nii!"? Yes, the film the Spanish call 'The Knights of the Square Table and Their Crazy Followers' turns 50 and to mark the occasion here's a bonus episode with Tyler and writer, podcaster & performer Tom Salinsky in which they talk at length about the film. Tom thinks that Life of Brian has more to say but Monty Python and the Holy Grail is the most consistently funny of their films, with barely a moment left gagless, from the inspired opening titles to the demonic camp of Tim the Enchanter. They discuss highlights such as the cartoonish violence of the King Arthur vs Black Knight sequence; Brave Sir Robin and his minstrel Neil Innes; Gilliam the gatekeeper of the Bridge of Death (later rented out to William Friedkin for Sorcerer?); Dennis the mud-ridden firebrand decrying systems of government; Carole Cleveland as Zoot, Mistress of Castle Anthrax; the weakly insipid Prince Herbert and his overbearing dad; the witch trial; Brother Maynard and the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch and, of course, Frank the TV historian who suffers a violent slaying.Tom also talks of his love for the LP and compares the film to the script book – whither Brian the Wild from the final cut? – and reveals that parts of the original script were later repurposed for the fourth series of Monty Python. He also touches on Spamalot and springing from that there's an interesting overview of the recent Dr Strangelove production starring Steve Coogan. Also: the coconuts for horses gag – A Show Called Fred got there first! In celebration of Women's History Month, this week on the Access Hour, we are sharing two book launch events by amazing female historians that were held recently at the Filson Historical Society in Old Louisville! First up, we'll take you back to February 25, 2025, when the Filson hosted the book launch for Jessica K. Whitehead's insightful new text, "Driftwood: The Life of Harlan Hubbard." Jessica offers remarks on her comprehensive biography of the writer, artist, and sustainability pioneer Harlan Hubbard (1900-1988) and the deep impact Harlan and his wife, Anna, have had on Kentucky's culture. Whitehead's book delves into Hubbard's family background, education, and relationships, and into his theories on art, writing, music, and philosophy. Using journals, letters, paintings, manuscripts, and sketches, Whitehead pieces together the distinct phases of Hubbard's life, providing new insights into his character and legacy. Following the remarks, members of the NouLou Chamber Players, Heather Thomas (violin) and Cecilia Huerta-Lauf (cello), join with pianist Sebastian Chang in the world premiere of composer Daniel Gilliam's “Piano Trio No. 2: Payne Hollow.” This exciting new piece of music, written by Gilliam in conjunction with the book launch celebrates the Hubbards' vision of living and working on their own terms. The trio also honors the Harlan and Anna Hubbards' deep love of classical music performance—showcasing the instruments they once played: piano, cello, and violin. Jessica K. Whitehead, writer and curator of collections at the Kentucky Derby Museum in Louisville, is author of "The History of the Kentucky Derby in 75 Objects" and a contributor to "The Watercolors of Harlan Hubbard: From the Collection of Bill and Flo Caddell." Daniel Gilliam is a composer from Louisville, KY. He is also the program director, and an announcer, on 90.5 WUOL Classical Louisville. Watch a recording of the evening and see the musical performance and images referenced at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BucL0S6vD94. Following that, we'll hear from another amazing historian, Eliza McGraw, who spoke at the Filson Historical Society on March 6, 2025 about her brand new book, "Astride: Horses, Women, and a Partnership That Shaped America." In the book, Eliza weaves together stories of women who pioneered in worlds such as Thoroughbred breeding, the circus, and horse rescue at a time when American women in general internalized the lessons of horsewomen: take chances, take up more space, and learn to get back on. From tamers to caretakers and performers to teachers, all worked with horses to buck the status quo. Expressing the idea of femininity with athleticism and authority, these trailblazers changed the way America understood women. Richly illustrated with period photographs, Astride demonstrates that even small changes can advance the fight for progress. Eliza McGraw is the Dr. Tony Ryan Book Award–winning author of "Here Comes Exterminator! The Longshot Horse, the Great War, and the Making of an American Hero" and a contributing writer for EQUUS magazine. Watch a full recording and see the slides at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1HKDSSs3-4 The Access Hour airs on Forward Radio, 106.5fm, WFMP-LP Louisville, every Wednesday at 2pm and repeats Thursdays at 11am and Fridays at 1pm. The Access Hour is your opportunity to take over the air waves to share your passion.

Jim Gilliam was a terrific infielder for the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers for 17 years. After starting his career in the Negro Leagues, he followed in the footsteps of his idol, Jackie Robinson. Signed by the Dodgers, like Robinson, he was sent to Montreal to play for the Royals. After a few seasons, he found his way to Brooklyn and was named Rookie of the Year in 1953. Gilliam, a favorite of Dodger manager Walter Alston, was called the ultimate team player. No matter where Alston needed him to play, Gilliam was up to the task. He was a terrific fielder and a career .266 hitter. Interestingly, though, Gilliam was always on the trading block and rarely got an opening day start because the Dodgers always thought they had someone better. But they didn't, and through it all, Gilliam was one of the most reliable infielders the team ever had. He played in seven World Series for the Dodgers and won four of them. He was so integral to the Dodgers' success that twice he was called out of retirement to help the team. After his playing days were over, Gilliam stayed a part of the organization by serving as a coach and was a member of three other Dodger teams that went to the World Series. In fact, Gilliam was so important to the franchise that his No. 19 was retired by the team. On this episode of Sports' Forgotten Heroes, Steve Dittmore, author of "Jim Gilliam: The Forgotten Dodger," joins for a wonderful discussion about Gilliam, the challenges he faced, his career, and so much more.

Predators I've Caught With Chris Hansen

Timothy Gilliam, thirty-two at the time, began chatting with a Perverted Justice decoy who was posing as a fourteen-year-old girl. Despite the fact that his chat log is not accessible online, it is known that he asked the girl if she had ever experienced oral and anal sex. He repeatedly displayed his penis on a webcam and asked if he could teach her how to orgasm. Gilliam admitted having watched Dateline NBC episodes where older men were arrested for attempting to meet underage children for sex.  He was not happy to meet Chris.   Paid Partner of TruthFinder®   This is another Hurrdat Media Production.
