Can you believe that for half a century student bars the length and breadth of the land have resounded to the excruciating cries of "Nii!"? Yes, the film the Spanish call 'The Knights of the Square Table and Their Crazy Followers' turns 50 and to mark the occasion here's a bonus episode with Tyler and writer, podcaster & performer Tom Salinsky in which they talk at length about the film. Tom thinks that Life of Brian has more to say but Monty Python and the Holy Grail is the most consistently funny of their films, with barely a moment left gagless, from the inspired opening titles to the demonic camp of Tim the Enchanter. They discuss highlights such as the cartoonish violence of the King Arthur vs Black Knight sequence; Brave Sir Robin and his minstrel Neil Innes; Gilliam the gatekeeper of the Bridge of Death (later rented out to William Friedkin for Sorcerer?); Dennis the mud-ridden firebrand decrying systems of government; Carole Cleveland as Zoot, Mistress of Castle Anthrax; the weakly insipid Prince Herbert and his overbearing dad; the witch trial; Brother Maynard and the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch and, of course, Frank the TV historian who suffers a violent slaying.Tom also talks of his love for the LP and compares the film to the script book – whither Brian the Wild from the final cut? – and reveals that parts of the original script were later repurposed for the fourth series of Monty Python. He also touches on Spamalot and springing from that there's an interesting overview of the recent Dr Strangelove production starring Steve Coogan. Also: the coconuts for horses gag – A Show Called Fred got there first! So that ticks the box marked 'Goon Content'!Tom is co-host of Best Pick podcast: https://bestpickpod.com/

In celebration of Women's History Month, this week on the Access Hour, we are sharing two book launch events by amazing female historians that were held recently at the Filson Historical Society in Old Louisville! First up, we'll take you back to February 25, 2025, when the Filson hosted the book launch for Jessica K. Whitehead's insightful new text, "Driftwood: The Life of Harlan Hubbard." Jessica offers remarks on her comprehensive biography of the writer, artist, and sustainability pioneer Harlan Hubbard (1900-1988) and the deep impact Harlan and his wife, Anna, have had on Kentucky's culture. Whitehead's book delves into Hubbard's family background, education, and relationships, and into his theories on art, writing, music, and philosophy. Using journals, letters, paintings, manuscripts, and sketches, Whitehead pieces together the distinct phases of Hubbard's life, providing new insights into his character and legacy. Following the remarks, members of the NouLou Chamber Players, Heather Thomas (violin) and Cecilia Huerta-Lauf (cello), join with pianist Sebastian Chang in the world premiere of composer Daniel Gilliam's “Piano Trio No. 2: Payne Hollow.” This exciting new piece of music, written by Gilliam in conjunction with the book launch celebrates the Hubbards' vision of living and working on their own terms. The trio also honors the Harlan and Anna Hubbards' deep love of classical music performance—showcasing the instruments they once played: piano, cello, and violin. Jessica K. Whitehead, writer and curator of collections at the Kentucky Derby Museum in Louisville, is author of "The History of the Kentucky Derby in 75 Objects" and a contributor to "The Watercolors of Harlan Hubbard: From the Collection of Bill and Flo Caddell." Daniel Gilliam is a composer from Louisville, KY. He is also the program director, and an announcer, on 90.5 WUOL Classical Louisville. Watch a recording of the evening and see the musical performance and images referenced at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BucL0S6vD94. Following that, we'll hear from another amazing historian, Eliza McGraw, who spoke at the Filson Historical Society on March 6, 2025 about her brand new book, "Astride: Horses, Women, and a Partnership That Shaped America." In the book, Eliza weaves together stories of women who pioneered in worlds such as Thoroughbred breeding, the circus, and horse rescue at a time when American women in general internalized the lessons of horsewomen: take chances, take up more space, and learn to get back on. From tamers to caretakers and performers to teachers, all worked with horses to buck the status quo. Expressing the idea of femininity with athleticism and authority, these trailblazers changed the way America understood women. Richly illustrated with period photographs, Astride demonstrates that even small changes can advance the fight for progress. Eliza McGraw is the Dr. Tony Ryan Book Award–winning author of "Here Comes Exterminator! The Longshot Horse, the Great War, and the Making of an American Hero" and a contributing writer for EQUUS magazine. Jim Gilliam was a terrific infielder for the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers for 17 years. After starting his career in the Negro Leagues, he followed in the footsteps of his idol, Jackie Robinson. Signed by the Dodgers, like Robinson, he was sent to Montreal to play for the Royals. After a few seasons, he found his way to Brooklyn and was named Rookie of the Year in 1953. Gilliam, a favorite of Dodger manager Walter Alston, was called the ultimate team player. No matter where Alston needed him to play, Gilliam was up to the task. He was a terrific fielder and a career .266 hitter. Interestingly, though, Gilliam was always on the trading block and rarely got an opening day start because the Dodgers always thought they had someone better. But they didn't, and through it all, Gilliam was one of the most reliable infielders the team ever had. He played in seven World Series for the Dodgers and won four of them. He was so integral to the Dodgers' success that twice he was called out of retirement to help the team. After his playing days were over, Gilliam stayed a part of the organization by serving as a coach and was a member of three other Dodger teams that went to the World Series. In fact, Gilliam was so important to the franchise that his No. 19 was retired by the team. On this episode of Sports' Forgotten Heroes, Steve Dittmore, author of "Jim Gilliam: The Forgotten Dodger," joins for a wonderful discussion about Gilliam, the challenges he faced, his career, and so much more.

The film also features Tilda Swinton (Doctor Strange, We Need to Talk About Kevin) as the enigmatic Minister Mason, the legendary John Hurt (Alien, The Elephant Man) as Gilliam—the wise elder whose guidance resonates throughout the revolt, & Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot, Fantastic Four 2015) as Curtis' right hand, Edgar. Timothy Gilliam, thirty-two at the time, began chatting with a Perverted Justice decoy who was posing as a fourteen-year-old girl. Despite the fact that his chat log is not accessible online, it is known that he asked the girl if she had ever experienced oral and anal sex. He repeatedly displayed his penis on a webcam and asked if he could teach her how to orgasm. Gilliam admitted having watched Dateline NBC episodes where older men were arrested for attempting to meet underage children for sex. He was not happy to meet Chris. Fans of Monty Python may know Terry Gilliam as the animator of their bizarre cartoons featured on the show. Or as the only American born member of the legendary troupe. But as his career progressed, Gilliam took his imaginative talents to the director's chair. His visually stunning and sometimes uncomfortable films thrust you into dream-like worlds and explored important characteristics of society. From the time-hopping child view of Time Bandits, to the award winning exploration of class structure in Brazil, Gilliam takes you on a brain trip with each of his tales. If it weren't for his terrible luck during productions, we may have even more to explore. This is Terry Gilliam. Welcome to Mona Lisa Overpod, the show that asks the question "What is cyberpunk?" On each episode, hosts Ka1iban and author Lyda Morehouse dive into the genre that helped define sci-fi fiction in '80s and they break down its themes which remain relevant to our lives in the 21st century. Pull on your mirrorshades, jack into the matrix, and start your run with us today!Christmas is a time of good cheer and goodwill to all, while cyberpunk presents a world of grimness and the brutality of institutions towards the individual. So, clearly, there's no such thing as a cyberpunk Christmas story, right? Enter Brazil, the terrifyingly funny film by Terry Gilliam that takes 1984 and places it squarely in the middle of British fascist Christmas. Gilliam milks humor from the absurd degradations of an oppressive society, all while highlighting the techno-fetishism and enforced consumption that substitute for human connection in the world of the film and often our own. In this episode, we discuss the origins of Brazil as a film, the story's parallels with other Christmas tales, the enforced consumption of a cyberpunk society, the influence of Brave New World and 1984 on the film, the radical act of giving away labor, Tom Cruise?, fascism's banal ideologies, commoditizing art, and becoming immune to satire. We also talk about being charged for your own interrogation, being iffy on Gilliam, weird baby people, medium ball questions, dumb frogs, Robert de Niro fixing your pipes, the implication of corn, getting distracted by the hamster, and skeeting in the right way!Consumers for Christ! The new edition of Lyda's book, Ressurection Code, is out now!https://wizardstowerpress.com/books-2/books-by-lyda-morehouse/resurrection-code/Join Kaliban on Twitch weekdays at 12pm for the Cyber Lunch Hour!http://twitch.tv/justenoughtropePut Just Enough Trope merch on your body!http://justenoughtrope.threadless.comMLOP is a part of the Just Enough Trope podcast network. The Pittsburgh Steelers are celebrating the 50th anniversary of their 1974 Super Bowl season. But one story from that year is getting overshadowed during the celebrations of the birth of the dynasty. That year, Joe Gilliam became the first black quarterback in the Super Bowl era to be named QB1 to start a season. He led the Steelers to a 4-1-1 record before Chuck Noll replaced him with Terry Bradshaw. Documentary filmmaker Dexter Rogers joins us to talk about the racial dynamics that surrounded that decision and how Gilliam's benching fueled his depression and addiction that would derail his career. We'll also talk about the Mike Tomlin apology tour that's been in effect since the Steelers victory over the New York Jets. Plus, why some say Russell Wilson was actually bailed out by his playmakers. Also Teryl Austin gets criticized for playing TJ Watt no differently than Dick LeBeau played James Harrison. And a Primate sandwich fit for a starting quarterback. What Yinz Talkin' Bout is the conversation about the Steelers social media conversation, exposing the week's hot and toxic takes. Hosted by Kyle Chrise and Greg Benevent. Watch "Joe Gilliam: What could have been but never was" Join the What Yinz Talkin' Bout slack
It's Popzara's Movie Time! Podcast, where our in-house movie nerds Ethan Brehm and Nate Evans take you on an unscripted journey yakking and chatting about some of their favorite movie moments and cinematic scenes, from past and present, presented without snark and snobbery for your listening pleasure. On deck for this episode are two entries in Terry Gilliam's “Trilogy of Imagination”, the other being 1985's Brazil, that showcase what happens when absolute imagination is met with absolute ambition, a surefire recipe for disaster - and often something wonderful. First up is 1981's Time Bandits, which has the distinction of being the only “children's film” with executions, severed limbs, exploding parents (and exploding dogs). Gilliam presents an entirely original time-traveling comedy with inspired performances, dazzling effects, and just a touch of classic Monty Python humor that appeals to kids and adults alike, despite a fractured narrative with more holes in it than any map of the universe. Next is 1988's The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, a lavishly produced spectacle of fever dream storytelling just as famous for its off-screen spectacle as it has for what's on screen. A triumph of visual and aural absurdity, Gilliam's adaptation of the beloved German fable featuring perhaps the most unreliable narrator in literature can finally be viewed on its own considerable merits. And what lovely merits they are! Our hosts tackle both films with aplomb, discussing how sometimes style does triumph over substance, how Terry Gilliam may be the living embodiment of Auteur Theory, how both films skilly hide their megastar cameos (Sean Connery and Robin Williams), favorable comparisons to both 1939's Wizard of Oz and Spielberg's Hook, and the sad reality of how Hollywood has been replacing talented dwarf actors with CGI effects instead of hiring the real thing.
