Host Anthony Desiato and guest Mike Sangregorio dig into the Superman bibliography of notorious writer Chuck Austen, including his 2004-2005 run on ACTION COMICS with Ivan Reis — which resurrected the decades-old romantic rivalry between Lois Lane & Lana Lang, introduced a new Gog, and infused Clark with a Spidey-esque sensibility. Anthony and Mike also unpack a pair of fill-in issues (on SUPERMAN and SUPERMAN: THE MAN OF STEEL), the 12-issue maxiseries SUPERMAN: METROPOLIS starring Jimmy Olsen, and the JLA arc "Pain of the Gods." Are all the fans and critics right about Austen, or is there any redemption to be had? Oh, and have Anthony and Mike solved the mystery of writer J.D. Send us a textAs promised, this week on episode #109 of "Fabulous Film & Friends we're going to weigh in on the two big ticket super hero extravaganzas from the Summer of 2025: James Gunn's Superman starring David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Skyler Gisando, Wendell Pierce, Edi Gathegi, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Sara Sampaio and Nicholas Hoult up against The Fantastic Four: First Steps directed by Matt Shakman and starring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss Bachrach, Joseph Quinn, Julia Garner and Ralph Ineson. Returning for yet another daringly detailed deep dive into the world of fantastical four colored fantasies is nephew to a comic bookstore Kingpin, author, teacher and hypnotherapist, Joe Field. Before we blast off into the Ultra-Negative Zone, the synopses: In 2025's Superman, it is 3 years into his mission and Earth's Champion, The Man of Steel has met his match in Lex Luthor who causes a distraction with a giant monster and breaks into Superman's secret Fortress of Solitude where he translates a message from Superman's parents in which they instruct their son Kal El –Superman's Kryptonian name-- to take over earth and spread his seed. Using this jarringly awkward info to turn public opinion against our hero, Luthor has also made a clone of Superman called Ultraman who continually batters and beats the Man of Steel into submission. On top of that, Luthor has a Pocket Universe where he jails his enemies including his ex-girlfriends. And Lex has Ultraman place Superman in a cage with another a super powered being named Metamorpho who can weaken Superman by turning his hands into Kryptonite. Ultimately, Luthor's cruelty overwhelms Metamorpho who helps Superman escape the pocket universe but it in doing so, the unstable dimensional rift threatens to swallow Earth. It is only with the help of scrappy reporter Lois Lane and a team of heroes called The Justice Gang that Superman that is able to beat Ultraman, Luthor and close the rift. There's also some political stuff going on with two made up countries going to War because of Luthor's manipulations. In The Fantastic Four: First Steps it has been four years since Reed Richards, Sue Storm, her brother Johnny and Ben Grimm were transformed by cosmic rays into the world's protectors, super stretchy genius Mr. Fantastic, The Invisible Woman, The Human Torch and the rock man known as The Thing who are biggest celebrities on the planet. The exciting news that team leaders Reed Richards and Sue Storm are expecting their first child is put on the back burner by the arrival of the Silver Surfer the herald of the planet eating Celestial known as Galactus. Galactus tells the Fantastic Four that he will spare Earth in exchange for their yet unborn child, but that his too high a price to pay. With the public opinion against them, and world watching nervously, the team springs into action and devises a incredible plan to teleport planet earth into the far reaches of space. But then the Surfer and Galactus arrive and put the kabosh on the plan so the FF amends the plan to send Galactus himself into the far reaches of space, which seemed like the better strategy to begin with. This episode contains spoilers for Superman. The film writer Jessica Ritchey returns for a look at James Gunn's hard reset of the DC cinematic universe starting with his new Superman, starring David Corenswet as the Last Son of Krypton, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. After a decade of Henry Cavill's Übermensch Superman, Gunn has returned to the original idea of the Man of Steel as a kind and decent protector of the planet. incorporating elements of the character from the last 90 years of comic books, radio, tv, cartoons and cinema, while also plugging the idea of Superman into modern life, where real life supervillains like Trump and Elon Musk seem to have the upper hand. Gunn's Superman contends with techbros and oligarchs who use other metahumans to inspire fear and social media to corrode the public discourse while running private prisons and engineering global conflicts for profit.Jessica and I discuss what we appreciate about Superman as a light and goofy movie that holds up kindness as a virtue and goodness as a choice one can make, including the gentle rebuke of Man of Steel in the main plot twist, and how it has enraged the Snyder Bros and conservatives who confidently predicted this movie would fail, but we also eat our words about how sure we were this movie was not going to meet the moment.Over 30% of all Junk Filter episodes are only available to patrons of the podcast. James Gunn is one of the most prolific and successful screenwriters and directors out there. After bringing the Marvel films, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, to the big screen, he was hired as the head of DC films to set up and bring to life the world of Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman. After successful products like THE SUICIDE SQUAD (2021) and PEACEMAKER (2022), he's back with the true kickoff to the DC Universe with SUPERMAN (2025).From IMDB: “Superman must reconcile his alien Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as reporter Clark Kent. As the embodiment of truth, justice and the human way he soon finds himself in a world that views these as old-fashioned.”The new Superman film stars David Corenswet as the lead with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. The aggregate website Rottentomatoes has given it great reviews from both audiences and reviewers alike. Your co-hosts take a look at this big budget beginning to the DC Universe and give their thoughts.
Send us a textChristopher Reeve soars into cinema history in 1978's "Superman," a groundbreaking film that established the superhero blockbuster format we know today. Before Marvel, before Batman's dark reinvention, this was the movie that convinced audiences a man could truly fly. What makes this film so captivating decades later isn't just its place in history, but how it fearlessly embraces both cosmic scale and intimate humanity. From the crystalline landscapes of Krypton to the bustling newsroom of the Daily Planet, the film takes viewers on a journey that feels both alien and deeply familiar. Reeve's performance remains the gold standard for superhero portrayals - his ability to transform between the regal Man of Steel and the bumbling Clark Kent with nothing more than posture, voice, and confidence is a masterclass in acting that later Superman actors still measure themselves against. The film's vintage charm extends to its supporting cast and villainous plot. Margot Kidder's Lois Lane balances professional ambition with romantic vulnerability, while Gene Hackman's Lex Luthor occupies an underground lair beneath Grand Central Station that ranks among cinema's most memorable villain headquarters. The special effects, revolutionary for their time, might seem quaint today but still evoke wonder in their creativity and ambition. When Superman reverses Earth's rotation to turn back time - a moment of pure comic book logic - the film confidently embraces its fantastical nature rather than apologizing for it.Superman (1978) wasn't constrained by established superhero formulas because it was creating them. This freedom allowed for creative choices that modern superhero films might shy away from, yet they contribute to the film's enduring charm. Want to understand why superhero films dominate today's box office? Look no further than this pioneering classic that made us all believe a man could fly. Watch (or rewatch) it today and experience the birth of a genre that would eventually reshape cinema itself.Twitter handles:Project Geekology: https://twitter.com/pgeekologyAnthony's Twitter: https://twitter.com/odysseyswowDakota's Twitter: https://twitter.com/geekritique_dakInstagram:https://instagram.com/projectgeekology?igshid=1v0sits7ipq9yYouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@projectgeekologyGeekritique (Dakota):https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBwciIqOoHwIx_uXtYTSEbASupport the show

Steffan and Gavia discuss the first good Superman movie since the Christopher Reeve era, a charming action-comedy from 'Guardians of the Galaxy' director James Gunn. Leaning into zany comicbook lore and the relationship between Clark Kent and Lois Lane, this reboot makes some vague attempts at political commentary - but is mostly about resetting Hollywood's vision of Superman as a lovable American icon.

We talk about the score from John Williams and how it connects to his other great scores from the 1970s and 80s. We praise the merits of the original film, especially Christopher Reeve as Superman and Clark Kent. We discuss the merits of 2025's Superman, directed by Jason Gunn, beginning by praising the chemistry between David Corenswet's Superman and Rachel Brosnahan's Lois Lane. We talk about the connections between the film and the wider DC Universe films, as well as comparisons to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

This week on Comics and Chronic we're following the blockbuster movie Superman (2025) with a titular story Superman For All Seasons by Jeph Loeb & art by the late great Tim Sale. Lettering by Richard Starkings & coloring by Bjarne Hansen“Told through the course of four seasons in the Man of Steel's adolescent life, this collection illustrates that it is the person, not the powers, that makes Superman a hero."SUPERMAN FOR ALL SEASONS is emotional and insightful, humanizing the alien from another planet so that he is not only realistic but also relatable. It also features in-depth characterizations of Lana Lang, Lex Luthor, Lois Lane and the Kents.”But first Cody gives an assessment on his second go around on James Gunn's Superman. This is some of Tim Sale's finest most gorgeous artwork. Does Jake hate Kansas and rural America? Jeph Loeb & Tim Sale capture the golden age of superheroes perfectly. A lot of this team's comics have bitter sweet and open endings, they're never quite a “happy ending”. Jake drops some his take on Hope. Superman is a CHONKY Boy in this story. There's very little action this story but only because the story is what drives it and allows the art to shine. Lex Luthor utilizes Super COVID-19 to attack Metropolis. Are there vague whispers of another season of Sopranos September? Cody reveals he's part Italian and therefore hates himself? Send us a textWhat defines a hero? Not the powers they possess, but the choices they make when facing impossible situations. Superman 2025 stands as a testament to this fundamental truth, reintroducing audiences to a Man of Steel whose greatest strength isn't his ability to fly or lift mountains, but his unwavering compassion and moral clarity. While exploring James Gunn's fresh vision for Superman, we dive deep into what makes this interpretation both faithful to Superman's 85-year legacy and boldly innovative. David Corenswet breathes new life into both Clark Kent and Superman, crafting distinct personalities that somehow feel like two sides of the same genuine heart. His Kansas farm boy humility shines through even when he's soaring above Metropolis, creating a Superman whose power is matched only by his humanity.Rachel Brosnahan's Lois Lane emerges as the perfect counterpart - fierce, brilliant, and unwavering in her commitment to truth. Their chemistry crackles with authenticity, particularly during that electrifying interview scene where professional integrity clashes with personal connection. We dissect how this relationship anchors the film, giving Superman something worth protecting beyond abstract ideals. The film's most controversial element - the revelation about Superman's original purpose on Earth - transforms from potential stumbling block to profound statement about nurture versus nature. Superman isn't good because he was sent to Earth to be a savior; he's good because Jonathan and Martha Kent raised him with values that transcend his alien origins. His heroism becomes more meaningful precisely because it's a choice, not a destiny. From Nicholas Hoult's calculating Lex Luthor to Nathan Fillion's hilariously accurate Guy Gardner, we celebrate how the supporting cast enriches this world without overshadowing its protagonist. And of course, we couldn't resist gushing over Krypto the Superdog, whose presence captures the perfect balance of comic book whimsy and emotional resonance that defines this film.Whether you're a lifelong Superman fan or newcomer to the character, join us as we examine why Superman 2025 succeeds by understanding that what makes Superman super has never been the "powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men," but rather his fundamentally human heart. After all, anyone can save the world - but it takes someone special to care about saving one scared, not-very-good dog.Twitter handles:Project Geekology: https://twitter.com/pgeekologyAnthony's Twitter: https://twitter.com/odysseyswowDakota's Twitter: https://twitter.com/geekritique_dakInstagram:https://instagram.com/projectgeekology?igshid=1v0sits7ipq9yYouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@projectgeekologyGeekritique (Dakota):https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBwciIqOoHwIx_uXtYTSEbASupport the show

James Gunn's new SUPERMAN begins from the assumption that audiences already have a working knowledge of the Man of Steel's origin story, his super-skill set, and his romance with Lois Lane. Gunn's film benefits greatly from being able to skip past the basics, but it wouldn't have been possible without Richard Donner's franchise-launching blockbuster SUPERMAN, which codified those basics for the big screen. So this week we're spinning the planet backwards to 1978 and revisiting filmgoers' first introduction to The Last Son Of Krypton — who we don't properly meet until nearly an hour in because, as it turns out, there are about four different movies tucked inside SUPERMAN. We're joined by writer, podcaster, and Supes superfan Chris Klimek to discuss how it all holds together from a modern perspective, and whether Christopher Reeve's definitive performance is enough to overcome all the film's flaws, or just most of them. Then in Feedback, the SINNERS conversation lives on, with a listener detailing its many connections to another film that we considered for that pairing. Please share your thoughts about either and all versions of SUPERMAN, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. James Gunn's Superman is kicking off the new DC Universe, finally bringing back colour and joy to the DCU.We break down the good, the bad, and the WTF of Superman (2025) — including spoilers. We discuss what works, what worries us, and what we're hyped for.David Corenswet dons the red trunks and cape, delivering a Superman we've been missing. Clark Kent, however, barely gets a byline. Rachel Brosnahan's Lois Lane sugar addiction has us all a bit concerned. Nicholas Hoult goes bold (and bald?) as Lex Luthor — and unfortunately, he's still rather attractive, leading to some very confusing feelings on Marie's side.Oh, and Krypto the Superdog? Absolute scene-stealer. 10/10. Best boy.Plus, a star-studded cast including Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Edi Gathegi, and more. Look! Up in the sky... it's Sidebar Forever! On this episode, we react to the latest Superman film — written and directed by James Gunn, and starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. We dive into our expectations going in, what worked (and what didn't), the clear influence of All-Star Superman on the film, and how well supporting characters like Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, Mr. Terrific, and Krypto were portrayed. We also break down how this new Man of Steel stacks up to past cinematic versions. Plus: Does Gunn's take on Superman kick off the new DC Extended Universe with a bang… or a shrug?
Superman marks a welcome shift from the cynicism of recent superhero films, replacing the wearisome “men are bad” narrative with something timeless and uplifting—a hero who reflects God-given masculine virtues without shame or irony. At its core, this film offers more than entertainment; it offers hope rooted in moral clarity. James Gunn's direction stands out not only for its thrilling storytelling, but also for its ability to highlight strong female characters without caving to the ideological noise that has plagued modern franchises.Join James and Jeremiah from what sets this portrayal of women apart is the depth of the writing. Lois Lane is portrayed as courageous, intelligent, and resilient, yet her strength is coupled with humility and vulnerability—qualities that reflect a biblical understanding of strength under control. She is no caricature, but rather a fully realized character who complements rather than competes with the male lead. It's a refreshing return to the kind of storytelling that gave us enduring figures like Princess Leia and Sarah Connor—women who were strong, not in spite of femininity, but through it.At the heart of the film is Superman's inner conflict—his yearning to live as humble Clark Kent while carrying the enormous responsibility of his supernatural calling. This echoes the Christian journey: living as ordinary people in a fallen world, while bearing the image of a holy and eternal God. One scene in particular resonates on a spiritual level—when Superman opens his heart to his earthly father, basking in the sun's healing rays. It mirrors the experience of confession and repentance before our Heavenly Father, where light brings both conviction and restoration. "It's not your past that's important,” his father says, “it's your choices that make you who you are." A clear allusion to redemption and free will—core tenets of Christian theology. This tension between our temporal struggles and divine purpose speaks to a deeper truth: we are created not for mediocrity, but for greatness rooted in God's plan. Superman's desire to save, to sacrifice, and to rise above is a reflection of the imago Dei—the image of God within us. The film's striking visual of chasms opening in reality, caused by Lex Luthor's moral decay, powerfully illustrates how sin fractures identity, purpose, and the created order.Looking for a superhero film that entertains without compromising truth? Superman delivers humor, action, and soul-stirring insight. It reminds us that strength and virtue are not outdated—they're eternal. Since the new SUPERMAN film was highly anticipated by all, Jimmy decided to do a quick special about it. Sort of waxing on in an off the cuff more stream of conscious way. Maybe he should have taken notes because he rambled on solo for about 20(ish) minutes. Yes, THERE WILL BE SPOILERS throughout. Did the movie live up to the hype? Did too many characters make the film seem overcrowded? Has James Gunn reinvigorated the DC Universe? Tune in to find out what Jimmy thinks! Also, get a hold of us! Thanks for listening!

This week we cover the original movie based on the true fake story about the haunting of the Lutz family in Long Island. Synopsis The Amityville Horror is based on a real life made up story about the Lutz family moving into a house that was the scene of a brutal murder of an entire family. They soon find out that the house is haunted or possessed or something. You can tell the house is evil because of the way it is. George Lutz played by Josh Brolin's dad seems to slowly go insane while Lois Lane gradually becomes Wendy Torrence. A priest also is in the movie sometimes. Review of The Amityville Horror (1979) The Amityville Horror story is probably one of the most famous hauntings in America. Likely even more famous than this movie. It was one of the first investigations by Lorraine and Ed Warren on whom the Conjuring Movies are based. This film is a grab bag of haunting tropes that later got perfected by better movies. It really felt like the writer couldn't decide what type of haunting was going on, so they covered every base. It could be haunted by the ghosts of the murder victims, possessed by a demon, cursed by a witch, cursed by native Americans, or just a simple portal to hell. Take your pick. It ends up being a rather unsatisfying story because we're never offered any real answers. The Lutz family starts out promising as protagonists — George and Kathy are introduced as newlyweds with Kethy having three kids from a previous marriage. However, this interesting family dynamic is never fully developed and a lot of drama is left on the table. The plotline of Father Delaney feels tacked on, and never really pays off dramatically. He has one of the most memorable scenes in the movie, but it's bizarre that the main characters never learn about what happened to him. The movie ends up being an example of the pitfall of having a lot of plot, and no story. The characters seem one dimensional, and the ending feels unsatisfying. Score 5/10
