Power of X-Men: The Greatest Comic Book Podcast in All of the Multiverse!
We asked you to send in your boldest, spiciest, absolutely unfiltered hot takes — and wow, did you deliver.
2014 was a turning point for Marvel — and Axel Alonso was right in the middle of it.In this archival conversation, Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso sits down with me to break down exactly where the House of Ideas stood in 2014: the big swings, the new voices, the editorial gambles, and the seismic moves that were reshaping the entire line. We get into:The rise of the “All-New Marvel NOW!” eraHow Marvel was recruiting and developing its next wave of writers and artistsThe push toward diverse character spotlights like Kamala Khan, Miles Morales, and a newly elevated Carol DanversThe build-up toward Jonathan Hickman's Avengers mega-architecture and the early tremors leading to Secret Wars (2015)How editorial was navigating movies, TV, digital comics, and a rapidly changing readershipThe state of the X-Men and what Alonso could — and couldn't — say about their futureThe balance between legacy characters and new heroesMarvel's strategy for creator-owned-adjacent projects and keeping top talent in the foldIt's a sharp, candid snapshot of Marvel at a moment when everything was about to level up.If you love behind-the-scenes talk about how big superhero universes actually get made, this one is essential listening.
Your heroes return to Weyland-Yutani headquarters to read Aliens vs. Avengers. First Impressions is a spoiler-free shorter episode where we introduce which book we are reading and chat about our first impressions, including: The Bare Bones, Who this Comic for, and Judging a Book by Its Cover."In a future Earth ravaged by terror, the unstoppable Xenomorphs descend upon our planet, pitting the perfect organism against a world of superhumans. As the Avengers rise in defense, they face unimaginable loss as the gods of creation known as the Engineers set out to destroy what they made. What catastrophic events led to the fall of humanity and forced the Avengers to abandon their home planet? Which heroes will be first to fall, and which will be forever changed by the encounter with the Xenomorphs? Discover the answers as Hickman and Ribić weave a pulse-pounding saga where every choice could make the difference between survival or extinction."Aliens vs. Avengers is written by Jonathan Hickman, art by Esad Ribić, colors by Ive Svorcina, letters by VC's Cory Petit, and published by Marvel Comics. In Part 1 of this in-depth conversation, writer B. Clay Moore reflects on his early years as the marketing director at Image Comics during the early 2000s — a pivotal era when the company was reinventing itself around a new wave of creator-owned talent.Moore discusses working behind the scenes with emerging voices like Rick Remender and Jonathan Hickman, and how Image's independent spirit encouraged creators to take bold storytelling risks that reshaped the comics landscape. Moore also dives into the creation of his breakout series Hawaiian Dick, co-created with artist Steven Griffin — a genre-blending mix of crime noir, tiki-era cool, and supernatural mystery that became a critical and cult favorite for Image. He shares how the concept was born, how he and Griffin developed its striking visual tone, and how the book stood out in an industry dominated by superhero titles. The discussion rounds out with Moore recalling his collaboration with Tony Harris at DC Comics on the acclaimed JSA: The Liberty Files — a gritty espionage reimagining of the Justice Society set during World War II — and their later follow-up project, The Whistling Skull, a pulpy, post-war adventure that expanded their unique corner of the DC Universe.Part 2 airs tomorrow, covering more on Moore's creative process, later volumes of Hawaiian Dick, and his perspective on the modern state of creator-owned comics.

On this episode of the Major Issues Podcast, we explore Jonathan Hickman and Stefano Caselli's Ultimates, the crown jewel of Marvel's new Ultimate Universe (Earth 6160). This is not your classic Avengers lineup. Iron Lad, Thor, Wasp, and Captain America come together under extraordinary circumstances, while the shadow of Reed Richards, now the infamous Doom, looms large over everything. We dig into how Hickman redefines Earth's Mightiest Heroes, the bold political themes shaping their mission, and why Reed's transformation into Doom makes him one of the most compelling threats in the entire Ultimate line. What sets these Ultimates apart? How does Doom's presence change the game for the whole universe? We break it all down with curiosity, excitement, and a true love of superhero storytelling. On today's episode, I talk to comic artist Nick Dragotta. Originally from Cape May, NJ, Nick came to prominence working on Fantastic Four with Jonathan Hickman, which then led to their incredible creator-owned work East of West. Beyond this, Nick has done the art for a number of great books including X-Statix, wrote and drew his own book Ghost Cage, and co-created the character America Chavez. Most recently, it was announced that Nick will do the art for the final arc of Once Upon a Time at the End of the World, while he continues to draw the fantastic Absolute Batman! Joe Kelly digs into Spider-Man—voice, velocity, and how to keep the wall-crawler surprising without losing the core. Charles Soule covers three fronts: the moral grind of Daredevil, the horror-thriller pulse of Carnage, and galaxy-shaping storytelling in Star Wars—why each book matters now and six months from now.Expect first-look pages, honest craft talk, and a candid Q&A.
