A philosophical education can feel like a long and arduous path. Sometimes you think you have seen the light; you think that you have knowledge, only to discover you knew nothing. It is times like this where the learner must examine their blind spots and begin their path to understanding once again while accepting that the next attempt might too end where it began. The philosopher Plato likened this path to the ascent from a dark cave up into the light of the sun. He also said that those who have seen the illuminated world above have a responsibility to go back to show others the way. Today we go back, not because we have seen the sun, but because we have travelled the path enough to know we can do a little better than we did before. The blind leading the blind? Perhaps, but we might stumble into something interesting along the way. With special thanks to the following creators for their sound samples. A schoolboy is reluctantly drawn into the unhappy world of Arthur Seaton - a bullied outsider with a domineering aunt he believes communicates with ghosts. When their paths cross again as adults, the malignant power the aunt exercises over everyone in her thrall becomes apparent. This audiobook of Walter de la Mare's classic psychological horror story brings "Seaton's Aunt" to vivid life with sound effects, music and compelling narration. A story for Halloween, written in 2013 Scarred by a horrifying event in his childhood, William Connelly finds himself returning to his family home, scene of the haunting that has changed his life. Might he discover the truth behind what happened? And might he regret it when he does? Both this story and 'The Treasure' were written to accompany an interactive ghost story for what was then The SciFi Channel in the UK. They were supposed to have been written by a fictional writer, who himself had been scarred by a supernatural experience, and contain clues to the mystery in the show. Caine thought they had lost their family. They accepted it, even though their questions about what exactly happened still lingered. Now the answers they get are far from what they expected. Caine needs to choose: the family they lost or the family that they’ve found in Zero Zero? Trigger warnings: Police presence, police violence, discussions of abandonment, talk of suicide, explosions, weapons (knives and blasters), fighting, gaslighting, abuse, yelling, electrocution, and character death. Pat used to live in a small Irish village run by one rich man. One day, this rich man stopped giving work to Pat's father -- and told his rich friends to do the same -- in response to a false, salacious rumor. Without any prospects in their homeland, Pat's family came to the United States when Pat was seven. As a young man, he kept remembering a beautiful silk umbrella owned by the rich man's wife in Ireland. He wanted to buy one for his own mother. After trying his luck in many different jobs, he ended up repairing umbrellas for a living. But unlike the rich men, there is no umbrella that can protect Pat from the storms of misfortune. While reducing your carbon footprint is certainly important, the way we relate to one another is something else that environmentalist and road traveler Noami Grevemberg sees room for positive change in.Noami is originally from Trinidad, lived in New Orleans for a time with her husband, Dustin, and now the two travel in a VW van as well as abroad, focusing on experimenting with different eco travel practices along the way. As you'll hear on this episode, Noami is passionate about sustainable living, and has been dedicating her life to helping to make eco-friendly habits and choices more accessible to everyone-- whether you're on the road or living a more stationary lifestyle. While it would be easy to focus solely on the environmentally-conscious aspect of Noami does, there's a lot more to her work than that. And she might not say it this way herself, but in interviewing her for this episode, it's clear that starting conversations that aren't being had, and truly listening to everyone involved is a large part of what Noami does to better this earth. Sometimes it's related to sustainability practices-- and you'll hear in this episode that sometimes it's not. But there are so many ways to model positive change in this world. And while cutting down on single use plastic or turning off the faucet to brush your teeth are certainly important, the way we relate to one another is something else Noami sees room for positive change in.In this episode, you'll hear:The benefits of slow travelHow Noami stays warm in the van when the weather turns coldHer favorite rainy day activities when she's staying somewhere for awhileWhat inspired Noami to pursue environmentalism as her life's workHow Noami and her husband Dustin have dramatically reduced theirwasteNoami's favorite waste-reducing items and behaviorsHow to reduce your waste using the items you have on hand nowNoami's biggest challenges to working remotelyTips for cultivating a healthy relationship while working andtraveling togetherNoami's thoughts on women of color on the road and in the outdoorsA compelling anecdote from Noami's moto trip through Southeast AsiaResources mentioned in the episode:Noami Grevemberg - @irietoaurora on InstagramCacti and Coconuts - @cactiandcoconuts on Instagram and theirwebsite, cactiandcoconuts.comDownload The Ultimate Guide to Sustainability in Everyday Life forfreeBee's WrapWant to learn more about some incredible women of color traveling on the road? River surfing, a niche but growing sport, has taken Brittany Parker from one river to another since 2011, from successful competitions in Colorado, to completing a first descent of the Zambezi River in Africa by stand up paddleboard, to co-founding an instructional river surfing business called RVR 2 RVR. This year, things started off really promising for Brittany-- but then it all changed. For Brittany, this past season has been one full of trauma, change, transition, growth, and-- as you'll hear time and again in this episode-- letting go. Because when we go through big changes-- and especially when they're unplanned-- the key to moving forward is all in how well we can let go of the expectations that were, to make room for what comes next.In this episode, you'll hear:About Brittany's new-to-her 1994 Ford Coach House vanWhat river surfing is, and how Brittany first got started doing itHow Brittany went from being a novice to a competitive river surferThe accident that changed the course of Brittany's year in a big wayHow her close friend and business partner Natali helped Brittanyusing her Wilderness First Responder trainingBrittany's current journey of healingThe importance of tuning into your body, no matter your healthHer insights on letting go of expectationsBrittany and Natali's whitewater SUP instruction and excursioncompany, RVR 2 RVRBrittany's advice for anyone out there wanting to try something new, take a risk, or get out on the road.Resources mentioned in this episode:Brittany Parker - @bp.surfs on Instagram and her blog, bp.surfsListen to Brittany's new podcast, Ride The SwellNatali Zollinger - @natalizollinger on InstagramRVR 2 RVR - @rvr2rvr on InstagramBadfish SUPAnd She's Dope TooInterested in becoming Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness FirstResponder certified?
