Mainstream superhero comics have been a boys' club since their invention, and while things have gotten better in recent years, it is telling how few Batman comics have women writers, outside the works of Devin Grayson and Mariko Tamaki. For the last week of March, of Women's History Month, we're reading three stories by other women who have written Bat titles. We have a fun and completely insane three issue arc of 90s Detective Comics from Louise Simonson, the first arc of Gail Simone's run on Birds of Prey, and a single issue of Gotham Academy that brings Damian Wayne to the school co-written by Becky Cloonan (who will be back in next week's episode for her art). Control Freak (Detective Comics V.1 #635-637) Of Like Minds (Birds of Prey V.1 #56-59) Curse of the Inishtree Quill (Gotham Academy #7) Check out our current ranking list at www.comicsxf.com/batchat-rankings/ Thanks to Geri Nonnewitz for our podcast logo Follow the show on Twitter @BatChatComics and support the show on Patreon at www.patreon.com/batchatwithmattandwill
The CELEBRATING SUPERMAN series continues with Eisner award winner MIKE CARLIN, the legendary group editor of Superman comics through the late 80s and 90s. During his beloved Superman tenure, Mike helped lead an all-star team of writers and artists, including the likes of John Byrne, Dan Jurgens, Roger Stern, Jerry Ordway, Louise Simonson, Jon Bogdanove, AND MORE. He oversaw such game-changing stories as THE DEATH/RETURN OF SUPERMAN story arc and spearheaded a number of creative decisions that have shaped the character and had major influence on not just the comics themselves but adaptations such as the 1990s Lois & Clark television series and even James Gunn's new film.In their conversation, Shawn and Mike discuss how Mike got into comics, what eventually brought him over to DC, why he and the Superman creative team decided to kill Superman, and an angry phone call from Harlan Ellison once the news of Superman's death hit the mainstream.Episode art illustrated by Jon Bogdanove and Dennis Janke, kindly provided by Mr. Carlin.
Our next guests need no introduction... but we're going to do it anyway! Walter & Louise Simonson are comic book royalty, each leaving an indelible mark on beloved characters and series. The interview ranges far and wide, with Louise revealing her earliest comics memories and discussing her transition from editing to writing with Power Pack. The couple shared insights about their first writer/artist collaboration on X-Factor, comparing notes on their individual titles, and the interesting contrast in their career paths. They also discussed Louise's role in launching the X-Men's first major crossover with "Mutant Massacre" and their co-writing experience on Havok/Wolverine: Meltdown. Of course, we couldn't finish without some Death of Superman talk, as well as Walt's next moves on Ragnarok and his recent, oversized Battle of Muspelheim commission. Unfortunately, Louise is internet-absent, but you can follow Walt on Facebook and Instagram @walter.simonson.5.Support the show
I have a soft spot for Wildcat, the Golden Age hero, member of the JSA, and trainer of heroes. And he has a connection to the Bat family, having trained more than one member. So this week we're reading a perfectly whacky issue of Brave and the Bold as only Bob Haney could write it, and two mini-series by Chuck Dixon that feature Bat characters teaming up with Wildcat May the Best Man Die! (The Brave and the Bold V.1 # 118) Batman/Wildcat # 1-3 Catwoman/Wildcat # 1-4 Also, we are adding a fourth story to the Big Board, as we are removing one. Due to the mounting sexual assault allegations against Neil Gaiman, it has become difficult to feature a book that he headlined at the very top of the list. While any other entry on the list that features Gaiman's work is an anthology, "Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader?" Is a book that can't be discussed without Gaiman's contribution, and so it has been removed, and we are also reading "Succession" from Detective Comics V.1 Annual #4, by the wonderful and legendary Louise Simonson, so the Board remains evenly divisible by 3. Please listen to the cold open of the show for more details on our thinking. It's Christmas and that means all three Hines brothers are under one roof and that means all three Hines brothers (Will, Kevin and Brian) are on the podcast. We decide to talk about Power Pack -- a superhero group of siblings that was first published in 1984. We three brothers all loved the series when it came out and it was fun to revisit it. Power Pack was more revolutionary than it might have seemed. In an era of increasing violence and grittiness in mainstream comics, Power Pack remained focused on gentler powers and feelings. The siblings, although they do squabble, care for each other. The villains -- although dangers -- are of the "fantasy" realm, not crime/gritty/pulpy variety. It was one of the first big writing forays for Louise Simonson, who had previously mostly been an editor. And it was one of the few -- perhaps the first? -- major Marvel title to be written and drawn by female creators (Louise and artist June Brigman). Power Pack originally ran for 62 issues -- a more than respectable run. They had excellent crossovers with both The Fantastic Four and X-Men (as former editor of X-Men, Louise had worked with FF writer/artist John Byrner and X-Writer Chris Claremont). To this day, the Power Pack will show up in Marvel comics, much to our delight. For Loose Screws we discuss: UK comedian Daniel Kitson, the quality of Santa sleigh in the film Elf and the new Superman movie trailer.
Louise Simonson receives a gift that may help her escape from the clutches of her abusive husband Jack.
As we get excited about the upcoming Baltimore Comic Con, we spotlight two books by creators that will be attending the con; Paper Girls by Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang (Image Comics) and Power Pack by Louise Simonson and June Brigman (Marvel Comics). Plus, Yi Soon Shin Warrior, Cosmic Detective, Dawn Runner, Boris the Bear, Machine Man, 2001 A Space Odyssey, and Justice Society of America. Louise Simonson When people use the phrase, “triple threat,” I always picture Louise Simonson. Not just a legendary writer on comics like X-Factor, New Mutants, and Superman, she created the wonderful Power Pack 40 years ago with artist June Brigman! As an editor, she guided the X-Men to new heights and wrangled the Warren line of magazines — Creepy, Eerie, and Vampirella — when they., too, were at their height. One of the nicest people I've ever met, I am honored to be her pal and honored that she came in and had a chat with me! This episode features an excerpt of "Misterioso" by Thelonious Monk
This week, Jared and Teladia outline why Death in comics has become a meaningless marketing tactic that is slowly losing its effectiveness. They use the Death of Superman and Death of the Justice League as examples of when comics used death as a marketing tactic. "The Death of Superman" is a crossover story event mostly featured in DC Comics' Superman-related publications. The crossover, which originated from editor Mike Carlin and writers Dan Jurgens, Roger Stern, Louise Simonson, Jerry Ordway, and Karl Kesel, began in December 1992 and lasted until October 1993. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is a 2024 action-adventure shooter game developed by Rocksteady Studios and published by Warner Bros. Games. Based on the DC Comics team Suicide Squad, it is a spin-off of the Batman: Arkham series, and a follow-up to Batman: Arkham Knight. Discussed in this episode 1. The origin of the death and rebirth trope 2. How the death of Superman broke death in comics 3. Why Suicide Squad Kill The Justice League failed as a marketing tactic 4. When death was used well What do you think? What broke death in comics? Is there a time where death was used well? Like the phoenix rising, Bernard Chang is back on the show to talk his series with Louise Simonson about the original comic book Phoenix, Jean Grey. Tell us your history with the Velvet Underground! Is this a story you've always wanted to tell? Why begin at Andy Warhol's funeral? If the main characters are Lou Reed and John Cale, where does Warhol fit within the narrative? How do you approach writing dialogue for people who really exist? Do you feel pressure to get Lou or John's voice just right? What is your process in breaking down the story visually? Are you doing thumbnails, jumping right in?Was there a particular panel or page that was particularly difficult to lock down? When approaching a biography, it must be difficult as a fan. It all feels important! How do you pick and choose, boil a life down to the essential parts? Were there any moments where you felt inclined to augment what really happened, or invent dialogue that was in the spirit of a moment in their lives?Your research into the Velvet Underground must have meant an entire a lot of research, did you ever find yourself going down a rabbit hole of history? For someone who reads this and wants to dig into the Velvet Underground, is there a book you'd recommend to start with to learn more? All Tomorrow's Parties feels incredibly comprehensive, would you ever pursue creating more stories tied to punk rock history? I could see this becoming a trilogy!

The Traders continue mining Marvel's '80s output on this 5th excursion! What we unearth is not so much a hidden gem as an overlooked curiosity: the pre-teen super-team known as Power Pack! This original and largely self-contained series made in-roads with younger readers even while exploring darker themes and prominent social issues of the day, and ultimately served as a gateway to the wider Marvel Universe through its participation in the decade's biggest crossover events. In this examination of the first five issues, topics include: the background of the concept along with creators Louise Simonson and June Brigman; an introduction to the central characters; new additions to Marvel's interstellar alien races; talking space ships; an origin story rather similar to that of another iconic character; weird powers; anti-mutant hysteria; horse grandpas; later appearances of the Power family, and attempted revivals; a dreadful 1991 TV pilot; and plenty more. As for our review of the story itself, well... let's just say this has proven to be our most DIVISIVE outing yet! Covering Power Pack (vol. 1) #1-5.

Thirty years ago, Superman died. Then, he came back. We remember the event as a gimmick done to boost sales. Sure. Okay. However, the storyline had a massive impact on the readership, including our young Brad. Today, DC Comics recalls the fictional catastrophe in The Death of Superman 30th Anniversary Special, exploring the lingering trauma of Kal-El's death. We chat with Dan Jurgens, the original Death of Superman co-architect, about what it was like to kill the Man of Steel, resurrect him, and revisit the narrative thirty years later through the eyes of Superman's son, Jon Kent. In his story, "The Life of Superman," Jurgens reveals how Superman's demise at the hands of Doomsday continues to affect Metropolis as well as Kal-El and his family. Jurgens recalls his earliest Superman memories, the George Reeves television icon of his youth. He considers the character's impact on the culture and the stress and joy it was to challenge such an image in 1992. We worm our way through his emotional experience, contemplating those long-ago feelings ignited while steering the splash page apocalypse that was Superman #75 (Volume 2). We work out our own fee-fees regarding the eradication of the Man of Tomorrow. The Death of Superman 30th Anniversary Special is now available wherever fine comic books are sold. Along with Dan Jurgens, the book features the work of Brett Breeding, Roger Stern, Butch Guice, Louise Simonson, Jon Bogdanove, Jerry Ordway, Tom Grummett, Glenn Whitmore, Doug Hazelwood, and more. It's a who's who of the Superman offices; and an incredibly thoughtful reflection on the nineties event to end all nineties events. Be sure to follow Dan Jurgens on Twitter and Instagram, and keep up to date on his work through his website.
