The Independent Characters - A Warhammer 40k Podcast | Radio
Episode 267 of The Independent Characters arrives right on schedule, and it's a big one, both in content and in subject matter. This time, we're striding into the battlefield with not one, but two colossal armies in our latest Show of Force. Join us as we explore both the Imperial Knights and their dark reflections, the Chaos Knights. These towering engines of war have a presence on the tabletop and in the lore that is impossible to ignore, and we're diving deep into every aspect of them. Edit: So as we started recording – we realize that this would turn into a 5-6 hour episode. Carl was, once again, too optimistic regarding how much we could cram into an episode. So we made the decision to divide this topic into two parts. Episode 268 will cover the Chaos Knights as Part 2 of Oaths and Damnation. Over the course of the episode, we cover their origins and history, the unique culture of the Knight Houses, and how those sworn oaths of loyalty can either lead to noble service to the Imperium or a fall into the corrupting grip of the Dark Gods. From lore to codex, units to battlefield roles, we've got it all packed in. As our Show of Force Episodes go – we'll also take a look back at their evolution over the years – how these armies have grown in design, rules, and miniature range to become some of the most striking models in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Carl and Adan – as well as a special guest, will unpack the details of these armies over the course of several hours. Fire up your void-shields because Episode 267 releases on October 18th, 2025. For this week's show Album Club returns with an eye once again on this year's Damnation Festival with Warning's monument of misery Watching from a Distance, Wormrot's early 10s grind detonation Dirge, Devil Sold His Soul's innovative post-metalcore A Fragile Hope, and Code's bizarro black metal genius on Resplendent Grotesque.
It's been a hectic auld week but Gav and James carve out just enough time to plunder the mailbox to explore the curious minds of the listeners.Ticket sales strategies. Bristol Trip Advisor. Merch pre-sales. Running pod jokes and Xmas jumpers. And why did Gav choose to name the pod after some internet filth and then double down with branded cups?Fore! We go again, every Thursday morning.
Gavin joins us in The Razor's Edge studio to chat about this years Damnation Festival, which is just a matter of weeks away.He reveals whether the festival will be one or two days after this year, tells us all about this years anniversary event, discusses Damnation becoming the biggest indoor metal festival in the world and more!=====================Follow The Razor's Edge online:Web: https://therazorsedge.rocksFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/therazorsedgerocksTwitter: https://twitter.com/_therazorsedge_Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/therazorsedgerocks
Amos calls the people to repent.Jesus belies Saul.PASSAGE OF THE DAY 5So when they continued asking Him, He raised Himself up and said to them, "He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first."John 8: 7
With the growing popularity (it's appreciated!) of the pod, some people in the music business are less than delighted with the frank discussions that take place for the listening pleasure of ticket buyers. James was reminded of the fact that not everyone is a fan when he spoke to an irate agent this week.So Gav and James take some time to reflect on the impact of 2 Promoters, 1 Pod and how it's viewed by some people on our side of the fence. Is it possible that they might have a point? Are we a positive or a negative in this business? Does it matter in the grand scheme of things? And do we care?We go again, every Thursday morning.

Damnation is on the horizon and the reality of the outstanding to do list is starting to weigh on the team. But what exactly needs to be done before the gates open at BEC Arena in two months' time?Well there's the marquees to order, the cabins to hire, the laminates to get designed and printed, the backline, the crew, the parking, the traders, the radios, the scanners, the merch, wifi, fencing, security, first aid... and will someone think about the bloody towels!?Oh, and the small issue of Gav having his own cabin to discuss. We go again, every Thursday morning.

It's summertime, and what better to talk about for music nerds in the summer than our favourite music festival stories from almost 40 years of festival going between the three of us, from Reading 1988 through to modern festivals like ArcTanGent & All Points East. Conceived as the most modern, humane incarceration facility the world had ever seen, New York's Blackwell's Island, site of a lunatic asylum, two prisons, an almshouse, and a number of hospitals, quickly became, in the words of a visiting Charles Dickens, "a lounging, listless madhouse." Digging through city records, newspaper articles, and archival reports, Stacy Horn tells a gripping narrative through the voices of the island's inhabitants. We also hear from the era's officials, reformers, and journalists, including the celebrated undercover reporter Nellie Bly. And we follow the extraordinary Reverend William Glenney French as he ministers to Blackwell's residents, battles the bureaucratic mazes of the Department of Correction and a corrupt City Hall, testifies at salacious trials, and in his diary wonders about man's inhumanity to his fellow man. Damnation Island: Poor, Sick, Mad and Criminal in 19th Century New York (Algonquin Books, 2019) shows how far we've come in caring for the least fortunate among us--and reminds us how much work still remains. Stacy Horn shows that in setting up institutions for the humane treatment of social outcasts, New York City was so quickly overwhelmed by the sheer numbers confined to the Insane Asylum, Workhouse, Almshouse, Penitentiary and Hospital, that what emerged was a veritable gulag on Blackwell's (now Roosevelt) Island. Based on a careful reading of both remarkably candid official documents detailing widespread suffering and accounts by the intrepid undercover reporter Nellie Bly and the socially prominent Josephine Shaw Lowell, we come to appreciate the long shadow of history cast over the city's remaining island of the damned—Rikers. This Day in Legal History: Louisiana Adopts State Constitution, McCarthy Dies, and Birmingham CampaignOn May 2, 1939, Louisiana adopted its current state constitution, known as the Louisiana Constitution of 1921, which at the time marked a significant overhaul of state governance. Though originally adopted in 1921, it underwent critical amendments and re-ratification processes culminating on this date to reflect broader federal constitutional principles, especially concerning civil rights and governance reforms. This version would go on to become one of the most amended constitutions in the U.S., highlighting Louisiana's complex political and legal environment, particularly around issues of race, voting, and economic regulation. On the federal level, on May 2, 1957, Senator Joseph McCarthy died, signaling the end of one of the most controversial chapters in American legal and political history. McCarthy had become the face of the post-war Red Scare, using Senate hearings and investigations to accuse numerous government officials and private citizens of Communist sympathies without substantial evidence. His tactics led to the coining of the term “McCarthyism,” representing the broader trend of reckless accusations without due process, a violation of basic legal protections. His downfall began with the 1954 Army-McCarthy hearings, where his aggressive questioning was televised, turning public opinion sharply against him. Also on May 2, 1963, during the Birmingham Campaign, hundreds of African American children and teenagers marched in Birmingham, Alabama, as part of a civil rights strategy to provoke mass arrests and draw national attention to segregation. The police response, using dogs and fire hoses on peaceful demonstrators, shocked the nation and galvanized support for federal civil rights legislation. These events laid crucial groundwork for the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which fundamentally altered American legal frameworks surrounding discrimination.Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, never one to sugarcoat institutional danger, pulled no punches in a recent address where she warned that political attacks on the judiciary—particularly from Donald Trump and his orbit—aren't just angry outbursts. They're strategic. “Not random,” she emphasized, but seemingly calculated to chill the bench and warp the public's view of judicial independence. Speaking in Puerto Rico at a judges' conference, she framed the threats and harassment against judges as not merely inappropriate, but corrosive to democracy itself—an erosion of the rule of law masquerading as political speech. While Jackson didn't name Trump directly (a nod, perhaps, to judicial decorum), she acknowledged “the elephant in the room.” That elephant has been stomping around the judiciary for years, from defying court orders to demanding impeachments of judges who don't rule his way. Chief Justice John Roberts—no firebrand liberal—has already rebuked Trump this year for trying to undermine judicial authority. Jackson's remarks, which reportedly drew a standing ovation, echoed deeper concerns among legal scholars about an impending constitutional crisis fueled by executive overreach and coordinated judicial delegitimization. With a 6–3 conservative majority still holding firm on the Supreme Court, her comments are more than ideological protest. They're a pointed reminder that the judiciary's legitimacy isn't just under rhetorical attack—it's being targeted as a political obstacle. And in Jackson's view, the stakes couldn't be higher.US Supreme Court Justice Jackson criticizes Trump's attacks on judges | ReutersDonald Trump's judicial conveyor belt is up and running again. Today, May 1, 2025, he announced his first federal judicial nominee since retaking the White House: Whitney Hermandorfer, a conservative legal operative from Tennessee who's clerked for three sitting Supreme Court justices and currently works under the state's Republican Attorney General. If confirmed, she'll take a seat on the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals—a vacancy that lingered after Biden's nominee stalled amid GOP opposition from Tennessee's own senators.Trump's post on Truth Social didn't mince words: Hermandorfer is a “Fighter,” a term that doubles as both a branding strategy and a judicial philosophy. Her resume backs that up—she's defended Tennessee's abortion ban and fought Biden-era protections for transgender students. Translation: she's been in the legal trenches of the culture war and emerged as a reliable soldier for the right. This nomination is the opening salvo in what could be a new wave of over 100 judicial appointments in Trump's second term, offering him another shot at reshaping the federal bench after appointing 234 judges—including three Supreme Court justices—during his first. Hermandorfer is stepping into a seat vacated by Judge Jane Stranch, an Obama appointee, whose intended successor under Biden, Karla Campbell, never got her Senate vote thanks to a post-election deal between Democrats and Republicans to fast-track some trial court nominees at the cost of four appellate picks. The judicial arms race is back. And this time, the Senate arithmetic—and the vacancies left behind—may tilt even harder in Trump's favor.Trump makes first judicial nomination since returning to White House | ReutersGoogle's legal team is headed to federal court Friday to plead with Judge Leonie Brinkema not to yank apart its advertising tech empire. At stake is nothing short of the future architecture of online advertising. The DOJ is pushing to force Google to divest key parts of its Google Ad Manager, including the ad exchange and publisher ad server—core infrastructure for monetizing digital content. Think of it as ripping out the plumbing from the internet's ad economy.Judge Brinkema has already ruled that Google unlawfully tied its ad server and ad exchange, leveraging its dominance in a way that stifled competition and hurt publishers. Not exactly a glowing endorsement of their market behavior. Still, Google insists that a forced breakup isn't just excessive—it's legally unjustified. Their position is these tools do more than just hawk banner ads, and the DOJ's remedy would be a regulatory overreach. In the backdrop is another case in D.C., where the DOJ is toying with the idea of making Google sell Chrome—the browser—over its search dominance. Google clearly doesn't want a repeat of that nightmare here. So, the message from Mountain View is clear: Let's talk tweaks, not torpedoes. But Brinkema's already signaled she sees systemic harm. Whether that translates into structural remedies—or just more behavioral promises—now depends on how persuasive Google's lawyers can be without sounding like they're defending a monopoly.Google will seek to avoid ad tech spinoff in antitrust case | ReutersThis week's closing theme brings us into the fiery imagination of Hector Berlioz, the 19th-century French composer who lived as intensely as he wrote. Berlioz was a Romantic through and through—equal parts visionary, dramatist, and eccentric. His music defied convention, his orchestration exploded boundaries, and his literary obsession with Goethe's Faust gave rise to one of his most enigmatic and powerful works: La Damnation de Faust (The Damnation of Faust), completed in 1846.Not quite an opera, not quite a cantata, Berlioz called it a "dramatic legend"—a hybrid form that suited his unconventional style and theatrical flair. Drawing from Gérard de Nerval's French translation of Faust, the work traces the tortured scholar's tragic arc: from existential despair, to enchanted pastoral scenes, to infernal damnation, all wrapped in Berlioz's vivid orchestral color. Its fourth part, the “Ride to the Abyss” and “Pandemonium,” is especially striking—a blazing descent into hell that's often performed independently, particularly around Walpurgis Night on April 30 and May 1, when tales of witches' sabbaths and demonic revels echo the scene's imagery. At its premiere, The Damnation of Faust baffled audiences and bombed commercially, though it has since been recognized as one of Berlioz's masterpieces, showcasing his flair for narrative, his taste for the macabre, and his unmatched orchestral daring. It remains a high watermark for musical storytelling without staging—and an apt closer for a week shadowed by ambition, unrest, and devilish bargains.Without further ado, The Damnation of Faust, by Hector Berlioz. The floor at Admiral Maltings. Ron Silberstein, a co-founder of Admiral Maltings in Alameda, joins Steve Jaxon and Herlinda Heras on Brew Ha Ha today. He used to run The Thirsty Bear Brewing Company for 27 years in downtown San Francisco. At Admiral Maltings they also have a pub called The Rake in the same building, overlooking the malting floor. It is located on a former Naval base. (Alameda Naval Air Station was one of the biggest Navy airports anywhere.) Admiral Maltings is reintroducing an old-fashioned way of making malt that makes a high quality product. Barley is the most commonly used grain for beer and whiskey. Grains have to be broken down before the yeast can do its job. So the grain is soaked which lets it start to germinate, then they stop the process and dry it. They grow all of their grain in California. Before WWII, barley was the largest California crop. Then, the floor is actually cooled, because germination itself produced heat. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more. Russian River just won a Gold at the World Beer Cup for their STS Pilsner, and a Silver for Damnation. They use Admiral Malt. Drake's also won a Gold in the Cream Ale category. Punching Above Their Weight in the World of Malt They were just at the California Craft Brewers Cup. Admiral Maltings produces one tenth of one percent of the available malt, but they won 8% of the medals from the recent CCB Cup. Of course, it's the brewers who win the medals, but they do use Admiral Maltings malt. Visit our sponsor Pizzaleah in Windsor for the finest pizza menu and the most authentic flavors around!
Have you ever said the words from the Creed at Mass, “he descended into hell” and wondered, “Really? Jesus did? Why?” The Catechism shares the secrets of this line from the Creed and shows us how Jesus' descent into hell “brings the Gospel message of salvation to complete fulfillment.” Fr. Mike makes it clear to us that Jesus did not come to save only the righteous who happened to be alive during his time here on earth, but he came to save all those righteous men and women who came before him and would come after him. Today's readings are Catechism paragraphs 631-637. This episode has been found to be in conformity with the Catechism by the Institute on the Catechism, under the Subcommittee on the Catechism, USCCB. Smoke and brimstone spews from the yawning gates of Inferno, enveloping the lands where people have abandoned God and openly wage war against His Creation. It is a grim reality that a full third of humanity has bent its knee before the idols of Hell. The main military force of Satan on Earth is the Heretic Legions, raised from amongst these citizens of the damned.Though the vast bulk of the Heretic Legions are made of mortal humans, Hell often sends their own abhorrent progeny to reinforce their mortal foot soldiers: nightmarish War Beasts made of captured and possessed creatures and dreaded Artillery Witches who act as mobile artillery supporting lighting assaults. Thus, in this accursed theatre of war, mortals and abominations march hand in withering hand, bound by the suffering ties of damnation. The wails of tortured beasts meld with the shrieks of damned souls, while the skies rain down fiery retribution upon all who dare to oppose the Heretics' ceaseless crusade for a demented parity with their Creator.Support the show
The Constitution Study with Host Paul Engel – If Ronald Reagan was correct, and “a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth.” Then the question we should be asking is, is that a life of eternal salvation or eternal damnation? Just look at public education in the US. What about the U.S. Department of Agriculture? Look at the U.S. Housing and Urban Development's Federal Housing Administration...

Fr. Mike confronts the hard truth Jesus preaches in today's readings: Many people will ultimately choose hell over heaven. While this can be deeply distressing, Fr. Mike reminds us to focus on Jesus's directive to each one of us: "[You] Strive to enter through the narrow gate." In the second part of today's commentary, Fr. Mike reflects on two of Jesus' most well-known parables: the parable of the Lost Sheep and the parable of the Prodigal Son. Today's readings are Luke 13-16 and Proverbs 26:10-12.
