Read transcriptWelcome web-slinging warriors and joystick jockeys to another thrilling episode of Play Comics where we untangle the sticky situation of comic-to-game adaptations with the precision of Peter Parker trying to explain away his sudden photography skills! This week we're diving headfirst into the cel-shaded spectacular that is Ultimate Spider-Man, the 2005 game that took Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley's comic masterpiece and somehow convinced every gaming platform from here to the Daily Bugle that they needed a piece of this web-slinging action. Released across more systems than Spider-Man has quips in his arsenal—PS2, Xbox, GameCube, Game Boy Advance, and Nintendo DS—this Treyarch-developed adventure let players experience both sides of the symbiote coin. Whether you were swinging through Manhattan as everyone's favorite wise-cracking wall-crawler or stomping around as the terrifyingly toothy Venom, this game promised to deliver more comic book authenticity than J. Jonah Jameson has anti-Spider-Man editorials. Joining us for this ultimate discussion are two absolute legends from the podcasting multiverse: Derek B Gayle and Doug Fink, the dynamic duo behind Walloping Websnappers and a whole constellation of other fantastic shows on the Glitterjaw Queer Podcast Collective that may not be directly relevant to our web-slinging shenanigans today, but are undeniably brilliant nonetheless. When they're not busy dissecting every Spider-Man cartoon ever created or exploring the depths of various other pop culture phenomena, these two bring their encyclopedic knowledge of all things Spider to help us determine whether this game truly captured the essence of the Ultimate universe or if it just left us feeling like we'd been caught in one of Green Goblin's elaborate schemes. So dust off those early 2000s gaming controllers, practice your best Venom growl, and prepare for an episode that's guaranteed to be more entertaining than watching Eddie Brock try to explain his sudden career change from journalism to alien symbiote hosting! Learn such things as: Can you make a game that really fits in with the continuity of the comics AND have it stay that way? Will we sucker any artists into making Venomized versions of The Muppets? What kind of good butt battle would ensue between Venom and Captain America? And so much more! You can find Derek and Doug on a bunch of stuff on the Glitterjaw Queer Podcast Collective, including Walloping Websnappers, Skreeonk!, and Falling With Style. You can also find Doug on Novel Gaming and on BlueSky @ickybooley. You can also find Derek on Gimmicks and Lee Carvallo's Podding Challenge, and on BlueSky @derekbgayle. The Superhero Show #600The Spider Wars Begin With Spider-Carnage's RiseThe Superhero Show Show: Spider Wars Begins With Spider-Carnage's RiseJoin the hosts of The Superhero Show Show as they dive headfirst into Spider Wars, the thrilling final arc of Spider-Man: The Animated Series. This week, they break down episode 5.12, Spider Wars, Chapter 1: I Really, Really Hate Clones. Here, the multiverse starts to unravel, and Spider-Carnage takes center stage as one of Spider-Man's most terrifying foes.Spider-Carnage Emerges in Spider WarsTo begin, the panel explores how the episode immediately escalates the stakes. A sinister fusion of Spider-Man's clone and Carnage, Spider-Carnage threatens to destroy all of reality. As Spider-Man uncovers a web of alternate versions of himself, the hosts explain how the show skillfully balances high-concept storytelling with Peter Parker's emotional turmoil over identity and betrayal. Moreover, with the multiverse in danger, Madame Web steps in to guide Spider-Man through the chaos. Consequently, he must ally with unexpected counterparts, even when trust is difficult. The discussion emphasizes how the episode sets up an epic confrontation, establishing Spider-Carnage as both a physical and psychological threat.A Multiverse of Spider-MenNext, the hosts have a blast discussing the debut of multiple Spider-Men, ranging from armored Spidey to powerless Peter Parker. Furthermore, each variant brings unique quirks to the team. The panel praises how the episode gives every version a distinct personality, while still reinforcing Spider-Man's core theme of responsibility. In addition, they highlight the fun interplay between these heroes as they reluctantly come together under Madame Web's guidance.Building Toward the Spider Wars FinaleAs the tension continues to rise, the group reflects on how Spider Wars pushes the scale higher than anything the series has done before. Not only did the Red Skull, Kingpin, and other classic villains once threaten New York, but now Spider-Carnage threatens all of existence. Therefore, the hosts commend the episode's tight pacing, sharp writing, and willingness to push Peter Parker into uncharted emotional territory.Final Thoughts: Spider Wars Begins With a BangIn conclusion, the hosts agree that Spider Wars, Chapter 1: I Really, Really Hate Clones is an electrifying start to this final arc. With its bold multiverse concept, compelling Spider-Man variants, and the chilling menace of Spider-Carnage, this chapter successfully sets the stage for an unforgettable Spider Wars finale. Ultimately, whether you're a lifelong fan or discovering the series for the first time, this podcast episode shows why this storyline remains one of the most iconic moments in animated superhero history.Links and ResourcesMissed our previous episodes of Spider-Man the Animated Series?

Daarnaast hebben we groot Marvel-nieuws: Jon Bernthal's Punisher krijgt volgens de laatste berichten een prominente rol in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The Punisher krijgt een grote rol in Spider-Man: Brand New DayHet MCU staat op scherp, want er gaan sterke geruchten dat Jon Bernthal's Punisher een grote rol krijgt in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

In Predator Kills the Marvel Universe, you've teased a meditative tone as much as a brutal one. Can you talk about how you approached giving emotional weight to what could easily be a pure spectacle series?2. We know Frank Castle is at a low point in Punisher: Red Band, but you've also said it's a story about who Frank becomes when he has nothing left. What's the most surprising aspect of Frank you think readers will discover in this series?3. We here at AIPT have covered the use of the Punisher symbol via 3rd party swag outside of Disney, we even saw its use in the recent Daredevil show, what's your take on the Punisher logo and its use?4. With both Red Band and Predator Kills launching this year, you're leaning into stories with serious ultraviolence. As a writer, how do you decide when violence is meaningful versus when it's gratuitous?5. You mentioned in the Predator Kills the Marvel Universe press release that some heroes are more “killable” than others. Without giving anything away, was there a particular Marvel character that was the hardest to write a death for—either logistically or emotionally?6. You've done a lot of work balancing character legacy with reinvention—especially with Hellverine and now Red Hulk. How do you decide what to preserve and what to explode when you're writing these kinds of legacy figures?7. Spider-Man and Predator is a wild matchup. Can you tease what their conflict reveals about Peter Parker that we haven't seen before?8. Both Red Hulk and Hellverine feel like "dark mirror" characters—but wildly different in tone and execution. Do you see thematic overlap between them? How do you avoid them becoming just monstrous versions of other heroes?9. You're clearly building (or helping shape) a kind of hyper-violent sublabel within Marvel between Red Band, Predator crossovers, and these monstrous anti-heroes. Would you want to keep expanding this “Percy-verse”? And if so, who would you tap next?10. (Fun one): If Predator could take on one Marvel team in a cooking competition, who would it be—and what's Predator's signature dish?Short novel as a newspaper - subscribe - start November - post-apocalyptic “The End Times” Station 11 meets our townbadhandbooks.com
In this episode of 2004: A Film Odyssey, Mirandia and Ben suit up to swing through one of the greatest superhero sequels of all time — Spider-Man 2. From Doc Ock's iconic villain arc to Peter Parker's soul-crushing struggle with responsibility, we're diving deep into the emotional (and very meme-able) heart of Sam Raimi's web-slinging masterpiece. We talk bad pizza delivery timing, train fights that still hold up, and why Tobey Maguire's sad eyes broke a generation. Plus: Ben shares a personal ranking of Spider-Man actors, Mirandia relives her first Spider-crush, and we both get slightly too outraged over phone etiquette. (We know it has nothing to do with the film but…) Whether you were Team MJ, Team “Give Peter a Break,” or just here for the J. Jonah Jameson quotes, this one's for you.

They unpack Peter's heartbreak, the ethical questions of cloning, and the way this storyline echoes real-world identity crises. This moment, they argue, marks one of the most daring turns in the series.Spider-Man and Black Cat Face the Final BattleAs Peter reels from the truth, Black Cat steps in once more. The Superhero Show Show #595STAS: Hydro-Man ReturnsThe Superhero Show Show: Hydro-Man's Return Shakes Up Spider-Man's WorldOn this week's Superhero Show Show, the hosts dive into the soggy chaos of Spider-Man: The Animated Series, season 5, episode 7, The Return of Hydro-Man, Part 1. The spotlight is on the return of one of Spidey's most relentless and emotionally charged villains: Hydro-Man. In this thrilling breakdown, the hosts explore Hydro-Man's watery revenge tour, Peter and Mary Jane's ill-fated honeymoon, and the shocking return of Black Cat to New York City.Hydro-Man Interrupts a Honeymoon at Niagara FallsThe episode opens with Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson finally getting their much-deserved happily-ever-after…or so they think. As they enjoy their honeymoon at the picturesque Niagara Falls, danger—quite literally—rises from the water. In one of the most shocking twists of the series, Hydro-Man re-emerges and kidnaps MJ, dragging her away in a terrifying and emotional moment that sends Peter into a spiral. The hosts analyze how this dramatic moment raises the stakes, setting the tone for an emotionally charged episode. They discuss Peter's immediate panic, his desperation to track MJ down, and how Hydro-Man's obsession with her turns him into more than just a villain—he becomes a force of personal devastation.Spider-Man vs Hydro-Man: Round After RoundThe hosts break down every clash between Spider-Man and Hydro-Man throughout the episode. From a rooftop confrontation soaked in suspense to a sewer system showdown filled with stunning animation, the episode delivers multiple action-packed encounters. They highlight how each fight escalates the threat level and how Hydro-Man's fluid form continues to outmaneuver even Spidey's most agile moves. There's also plenty of commentary on how Peter's emotional turmoil affects his fighting style—his rage, guilt, and confusion bleed into every punch and web shot. These aren't just physical battles; they're emotional ones too.The Return of the Black Cat: An Unexpected AllyAs Peter hits dead ends in his search for MJ, he's surprised by the return of Felicia Hardy, aka Black Cat. Back in New York and as bold as ever, Black Cat inserts herself into the chaos, offering her skills and street smarts to help Spider-Man uncover clues to Mary Jane's location. The hosts celebrate her return, commenting on her electric chemistry with Peter, her sharp one-liners, and her willingness to dive into danger despite the emotional minefield surrounding MJ's disappearance.Final Thoughts: Hydro-Man Raises the Emotional StakesIn the final segment, the podcast team emphasizes that Hydro-Man's return isn't just about spectacle—it's about loss, fear, and heartbreak. With MJ missing, Black Cat back in the mix, and Hydro-Man growing more dangerous by the minute, this episode sets the stage for one of Spider-Man: The Animated Series' most compelling two-parters.Tune in to The Superhero Show Show as the hosts explore the beginning of this turbulent arc, where Hydro-Man's obsession, Spider-Man's anguish, and a missing MJ make for one unforgettable ride.Links and ResourcesMissed our previous episodes of Spider-Man the Animated Series? Matthew James Thomas opens up in this heartfelt conversation about his journey from a rebellious, bullied teen in the English countryside to finding truth and belonging on stage. Growing up feeling misunderstood, he found safety and purpose in acting, discovering early on that truth-telling through performance was his way of making sense of the world. He shares the emotional weight he carries playing Harry Potter on Broadway, how he navigates the show's intense emotional peaks night after night, and why live theatre never gets old — even after over 135 performances. We also dive into the legacy of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, his love-hate relationship with social media, and why he believes musicals are only great when they get it exactly right. And yes, there's some mutual fan-girling over Severance, a hilarious attempt at explaining Les Misérables, and plenty of insight into what makes live theatre both terrifying and electrifying. Matthew James Thomas is a British actor, director, and songwriter. He originated the title role in the 2013 Broadway revival of Pippin, starred as Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, and has appeared in Accused, Summer of Rockets, Britannia High, Billy Elliot, and About a Boy. He currently stars as Harry Potter in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway. On today's issue of Comicast the guys discuss the positive reception The Fantastic Four: First Steps is garnering so far, Matt Shakman's reasoning for cutting John Malkovich from the film, and the use of practical effects. The guys also deep dive into all of the information that Kevin Feige shared during a sitdown with journalists last Friday including realizing Marvel Studios released too much after Endgame, cutting down the amount of TV shows to 1 per year, pivoting to Doom, the X-Men casting, Spider-Man: Brand New Day being a street level story, Miles Morales' future in the MCU, the status of Blade, diversity in their stories, Secret Wars being a reset not a reboot, and more. We have a big two crossover coming your way today, no, not the Deadpool and Batman one, comics writer Mat Groom (Radiant Black, Inferno Girl Red) returns to the show all the way from Australia to talk about his Tokusatsu inspired DC Comics project Immortal Legend Batman and his Marvel Comics project Spider-Verse vs. Venomverse. I did my best to not dig too deeply into Immortal Legend Batman , one of the most anticipated events of the year for toku fans everywhere, so we don't give away any spoilers so we jump into what, for me, is one of the surprise Marvel books of 2025 in Spider-Verse vs. Venomverse with what I found to be a thoughtful approach to the relationships between Peter Parker and Eddie Brock wrapped in a slobberknocker of a throwdown between the multiverse representatives of the Web Heart and the Hive Mind. We also compare notes on the misconceptions about dangerous animals on our respective continents. It's alway a pleasure having Mat on the show. Mat's website Mat on BlueSky Immortal Legend Batman #1 In shops August 27th From the publisher Humanity broke the barrier between our universe and our universe's shadow. Jim Shooter talked to the Crawlspace back in 2015 for the podcast. He was the Editor-In-Chief of Marvel Comics from 1978 until 1987. During that that time he saw success with the Secret Wars, giving Spider-Man a new black suit and also marrying off Peter Parker. The interview talks also talks about his memories of working in the Marvel Bullpen including a fun Steve Ditko story. And did you ever wonder about that scene in Secret Wars II where the Beyonder is taught to learn how to use the bathroom from Spider-Man? He discusses that fun moment in the book. This re-broadcast is from episode #394. If you would like to see the video of this interview, the link is here. https://youtu.be/frsTG0licec?si=WBC1b9PP-tu-Cg7O Are you a Crawlspace patreon member? The final episode of June is awesome. Pun fully intended, as Lorenzo aka TeamAwesome418 rounds out this month and joins me while he was on vacation to record this episode! We're talking DC, Marvel, Cosplay, and more in this episode! We kick things off with the DC side of things. Lorenzo talks about how he got into DC through the animated shows and movies. We talked about his love of Superman, along with Batman, and Static Shock. We bounce around between the animated shows and movies, to some of the more recent movies and discuss the upcoming reboot of the DC Cinematic Universe. From there, we swing on over to Marvel. And if you got that swing reference, that's because we have a good conversation about Lorenzo's love of Spider-Man. Peter Parker (and Miles Morales too). Plus, we talk about the animated shows, the pre-MCU movies like Spider-Man and the X-Men franchise, and we don't forget about the MCU movies, and characters like Deadpool. Lorenzo also talks about how he first got into doing Cosplay and some of the characters he's represented, including Static Shock, Spider-Man, and Deadpool, to name a few. He talks about what he's working on for the future in the cosplay space. He also talks about how he's met a number of the actors from the Marvel MCU space, tells a few stories of some special meetings. Plus, we touch on books that Lorenzo has published, available on Amazon! Kulap Vilaysack (Add To Cart) joins Jason, June and Paul to break down Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3 starring Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst. The four discuss how the movie is mostly about Mary Jane's failed Broadway career, all the bad CGI, Peter Parker basically becoming Austin Powers, and how there are simply too many villains.
