Ralph Macchio spent over four decades at Marvel Comics, serving as a writer, editor, and eventually Executive Editor during some of the company's most transformative periods. Beginning his career in the 1970s as an assistant to Roy Thomas, Ralph went on to edit many of Marvel's flagship titles including Daredevil, Thor, and The Avengers, overseeing Frank Miller's revolutionary run on Daredevil, Walter Simonson's legendary work on Thor, and collaborating with legendary artists like John Buscema on Conan the Barbarian. In addition to his editorial work, Ralph wrote for several titles including Master of Kung Fu and Marvel Two-in-One. Throughout our conversation, Ralph shared fascinating behind-the-scenes stories from Marvel's history, offered insights into the evolution of the comic book industry from the Bronze Age through the modern era, and reflected on working with some of comics' greatest creators. Though largely retired from regular comic work now, Ralph occasionally contributes to special projects and historical retrospectives that draw on his unparalleled experience in the industry. Once again, we go back to the 1970s for an obscure DC hero named...Manhunter!Manhunter (aka Paul Kirk) plays the world's most dangerous game -- hunting criminals -- amid international intrigue and machinations with all the twists and turns that you might see in a classic James Bond film. With the exception that Manhunter dies and is resurrected, but with a major twist...he goes up against an army of his own clones! This series, which played out as a backup story in Detective Comics, was the work of veteran writer and editor Archie Goodwin, and was an early work by a young penciler named Walter Simonson. Together, they crafted a saga that while short-lived, had an impact on comics fandom, and set Walt Simonson on the path to other things (Thor, etc).Your dangerous hosts are Brad Page and Chris Karam

In this interview, Joshua Toomey welcomes Alan Robert, bassist for Life of Agony and accomplished artist, to discuss his creative projects. Alan shares insights about his latest endeavor, an official Beetlejuice coloring book in collaboration with Warner Brothers, which coincides with the release of the new Beetlejuice movie. He talks about the process of drawing scenes from the movie and how much fun it was to immerse himself in Tim Burton's world. Alan also reflects on his artistic journey, from illustrating other projects like the Universal Monsters coloring book to his early experiences learning from legendary comic book artist Walter Simonson during his time at the School of Visual Arts. He recalls how comic conventions were much smaller in the early days and how breaking into the comic industry back then was tough. He shares how he eventually balanced music and art, creating iconic band merchandise and album covers for groups like Black Sabbath and Pantera. The conversation also touches on Alan's roots, his longtime friendship with Biohazard's Evan Seinfeld, and how watching them succeed inspired his own musical career. Throughout the interview, Alan discusses the evolution of creating art, how digital tools have revolutionized the process, and the importance of meeting deadlines when working on big projects like Beetlejuice. Alan discusses the creative process behind his comic work, drawing inspiration from music, like Pantera's Cemetery Gates, which influenced his short story. He also highlights his collaboration with Z2 Comics and other projects like the Type O Negative graphic novel. Alan reflects on balancing his artistic endeavors with touring, recalling his earlier days of drawing comics backstage during tours in the early 2010s. He contrasts that with his recent approach, where he focuses on intricate artwork, like The Beauty of Horror, while at home and reserves touring for music. Alan also reminisces about his time at the School of Visual Arts and shares a fun experience watching Keanu Reeves live on The Late Show. He appreciates the balance of his current life, splitting time between touring and comics. He mentions recent recording sessions at a legendary NYC studio, hinting at exciting music releases soon. Finally, he touches on the importance of creator-owned comic projects and his freedom to expand his characters across multiple platforms.Joshua Toomey on Facebook/Twitter @talktoomeytalk Support Toomey on Patreon www.patreon.com/talktoomey Concept Cafes Coffee https://www.conceptcafes.com Subscribe to Talk Toomey on YouTube for in-depth interviews with the most exciting artists in aggressive music, deep dives into iconic artists' discography, and more. #talktoomey #lifeofagony #coloringbook #beetlejuice #bassplayer
Walter Simonson Any conversation you may be fortunate enough to have with Walter Simonson is a treat — but for us to get him all to ourselves here in the studio for an hour or so was magic. Walter regales us with tales of his youth, his passion for art — and dinosaurs — and how he got into the business. Well, barely. We barely got into his career. Which is why he's gonna have to come back soon. I'm calling this episode one of…I'm gonna guess 15…? *This episode features an excerpt of "The Dinosaur Song" by The Paul Cornish Trio * The "Terry" mentioned several times throughout the episode is Terry Austin

Hemos elegido un puñado de tebeos de primera con nombres de primera a los que, por lo que sea, no se le suele hacer el caso que merecen. our graphic content module draws to a close with ragnarok by walter simonson. fantasy content is tough for us, which isn't particularly fair to this book, but we still find things to love and appreciate about it. we talk about what moving away from marvel allows for simonson to do with this book, which segues into a discussion about the future of the mcu. we wonder: does pop culture have space for this type of brutally violent art? (yes.) we perform a post-mortem of this module and talk about media ownership and digital rights. we open the email bag to discuss the difference in reading an ongoing thing (rather than a complete story) and discuss another email about infinite jest. we talk about adam levin's bubblegum.
Brooklyn's own Dean Haspiel joins us for a spell, pontificating on his career and recent work. If you're not familiar with this independent creator, he cut his teeth at Upstart Associates, assisting the likes of past guests Howard Chaykin, Walter Simonson, and Bill Sienkiewicz with some of their most acclaimed projects. His first major work was the anthology Keyhole, where he introduced one of his longest running characters, Billy Dogma. Dean collaborated with Harvey Pekar on American Splendor and The Quitter and with writer Jonathan Ames on The Alcoholic and the HBO series Bored to Death. He is also a big proponent of webcomics, having worked in the medium since its inception, and creating the acclaimed The Red Hook series. Most recently, Dean's taken to Kickstarter to crowdfund two books, Covid Cop and Billy Dogma, both of which you can purchase here:etsy.com/shop/deanhaspiel. The mysterious Malekith strikes Thor's world, but comics genius Walter Simonson won't let that storyline proceed in a predictible way. No, Thor #345 contains a pretty brilliant set of head-fakes which leads the reader to believe this issue is going to present one story when in fact it presents something very different. Amir and Jason explore and have a lot of fun with Simonson's unconventional approach. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/classiccomics/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/classiccomics/support
Amir and Jason are back exploring the story of Walter Simonson's Thor, this week delving into the complex question of Whatever Happened to Balder the Brave? Yeah, Balder was dead and then got reborn and got fat and kind of lazy, but what happens when Balder is asked by Odin to go on a quest to bring a message to Loki? Some interesting shenanigans ensue. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/classiccomics/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/classiccomics/support
Amir rejoins Jason as the guys continue their look at Walter Simonson's masterful Thor run, this time wrapping up the Beta Ray Bill saga with the terrifically exciting Thor #340. Our special guest may be our most educated and most professional guest ever. Duncan Munro and Jermayn Parker do their best to try and contain this larger than life Phantom personality. He is a practicing clinician with over 30 years experience, combined with ongoing service through several significant Federal and State medical policy roles providing outcomes to improve the well being of Australians. Was the Chairperson for the International Health Assessment Panel under Medevac Legislation 2019 assessing claims of refugees from Manus Island and Nauru. All that is very impressive but perhaps his most important role is to be the comedy relief for the LFMBEC dinners.Along with learning all about Antonio DiDio we talk a lot about past Lee Falk Bangalla Members Explorers Club dinners and some of the guests including Jim Russell, Doc Neeson, Rod Cavalier, Kerry Chikarovski, Walter Simonson, Ian Sharpe, Greg Florimo and many more.Antonio reflects on his friendship with Richard Fry and what is next for the famous dinners. The issue title may be sad, but the actual comic is awesome. This week Amir and Jasoon dig deep into Thor 341, the issue with that great title, in which we learn about Nick Fury's family, about Thor's broad shoulders, and about all kinds of nefarious plans to hurt Thor in the future. It's another barnburner, and the guys go on a few tangents as they dig deep into this amazing issue. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/classiccomics/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/classiccomics/support

The nice house on the lake.

I talk about Walter Simonson's Ragnarok volume 1. I also talk about should writers and artists from the past get second chances with the big 2 comic publishers.
Episode #418! This week Scott Sackett and DLNelson focus their attention on IDW's Artisan Editions. While the Artisan Editions contain the same content as the Artist Editions, their smaller size make them easier to enjoy (and shelve). We look at Mazzucchelli's Daredevil Born Again, Eastman and Laird's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Simonson's The Mighty Thor, Kirby's Fantastic Four and Romita's The Amazing Spider-Man. We also talk a little about the Netflix Marvel shows! Give it a listen!
A WB classic from 2005 Walter Simonson looks back at his classic work. From Thor The Frog and the creation of Beta Ray Bill, to Orion and The New Gods. From his collaborations with Martin Pasko to put the bronze age spin on Dr Fate, to reviving Manhunter with Archie Goowdwin. We talk about the Fantastic Four, his spin on X-Factor co-plotted with his wife Louise , to working on the Marvel Star Wars comic at that awkward time between The Empire Strikes Back, and Return Of The Jedi.Tales of wonder, from a true master.
