Ah the arrogance of writers. Now I am one, officially, I thought I'd better do something fitting.   So I set up a whole episode of my podcast to talk about my own book – Good Boy! My debut novella about small English towns, the bonds between men and dogs, and a battle between bravery and monsters.   Thankfully, I have friends who will facilitate this type of nonsense, so thanks to Nat Cassidy and Rachel Harrison for asking me questions and flattering my ego.   We talk about literary and personal inspirations, about what I've learned from 5 years of interviewing authors, about local folklore and the composition of monsters… and of course, about dogs!   This was the greatest pleasure for me. Good Boy is what we are reviewing this week on Horror Movie Talk. Also, I will be saying good boy a lot on this episode. Stay tuned. Synopsis When his owner Todd moves into rural home, a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever named Indy starts noticing strange shapes in the shadows. Told completely through Indy's point of view, we see as supernatural forces increasingly grow more menacing and seem to affect Todd. Indy proceeds to stare blankly and do very little to warn Todd, but who can criticize that face? Review of Good Boy Good Boy's charm relies solely on its premise of being a supernatural horror movie told completely from a dog's POV. It's the type of premise that entices you, and makes you wonder how they are going to pull it off. In this case, they barely make a case for a feature length movie.  The highest praise I can give this film is that it is a spiritual successor to Paranormal Activity. There are a lot of lingering shots that exploit the Eye Spy/Where's Waldo genre of that franchise.  Another good aspect  is the score, which is perfectly sparse and effective for the mood of the film. While it is engaging to look at a cute dog for a while, the lack of compelling plot developments makes it feel like a short film stretched to its breaking point.  The film is filled with similar scenes of Indy seeing figures in the darkness creeping towards him interspersed with some genuinely good jump scares. All the while, Todd is getting sicker and more of an asshole to Indy throughout. The implied explanations for the haunting and Todd's decline are many and non-committal. It could be a cursed house, or environmental factors. Or maybe that giant entryway into hell in the basement. Or it could just be cancer and the specter of death. Unfortunately the film never really lands on one and leaves them all open to interpretation. However, the regular expectations for hollywood polish should be tempered with the fact that this film was never really meant for a theatrical wide release. In reality, this is an extremely high quality low budget independent film that performed so well at festivals that it earned a wide release. If this was only released on streaming, it would be declared a hidden gem, but in the bright lights next to big budget releases, this film is outclassed. All that being said I do love the underlying narrative technique and did enjoy watching Indy's exploits. The hour and 12 minute runtime does feel long at times, but somehow I am still left wanting more, and hope someone picks up this gimmick and makes a truly great dog POV horror movie. Score 6/10

ARE WE GOOD?, an intimate documentary that looks at the life and career of comedian and "WTF Podcast" host Marc Maron. In particular, it focuses on how he's working through grief after the death of his girlfriend, filmmaker Lynn Shelton. We liked this. In theaters. This week, we (Dave, Evan, and Megan) discuss documentary ARE WE GOOD? (2:34), which follows comedian Marc Maron (and directed by Steven Feinartz) as he prepares for his comedy special, podcasts, and deals with grief after the death of his partner, filmmaker Lynn Shelton. We all like Maron, who's a captivating subject, and appreciate his discussion of grief. But we had issues with the chaotic editing and didn't really learn anything new about him. Then we all talk about GOOD BOY (28:22), Ben Leonburg's unique supernatural horror film told from a dog's point of view. Indy the dog accompanies his human companion to a remote house in the woods that happens to be haunted. But only Indy seems to see the danger. It's a great film that's emotional and well made, especially the sound design, cinematography, and Indy's charismatic performance. They say dogs can sense death, staring at something just beyond our perception. In “Good Boy,” that instinct becomes the engine for an entire film. Directed by Ben Leonberg and produced by Kari Fischer, the story unfolds entirely from the perspective of a golden retriever named Indy, who seems to be the only one aware that a house carries a sinister presence. What begins as a simple “what if” idea blossoms into a chilling, 73-minute haunted-house thriller told through a dog's eyes.The concept is both ingenious and risky. Leonberg and Fischer spent years refining it, drawing inspiration from Jack London's animal adventures and the horror tradition of films like “Poltergeist.” Without dialogue to rely on, the filmmakers built the narrative through images, sound, and Indy's natural behavior, creating a cinematic language where panting, footsteps, and a thousand-yard stare become the keys to suspense. The result is eerie, playful, and surprisingly emotional, inviting viewers to see a ghost story through the gaze of man's best friend.For Leonberg, the idea had been percolating for over a decade. “I came up with the idea by watching ‘Poltergeist' and thinking, man, somebody should tell a story entirely from the golden retriever's perspective,” he explained. “I worked with a co-writer for years, really trying to crack the story…because we're not using dialogue to tell the story.
