Corporate confusion, multiversal panic, Gotham body horror, dragon-fueled paranoia, and one very expensive boat trip. This week on the podcast, Brian and Darryl unpack the Paramount-Warner Bros. regulatory whiplash, judge the new Avengers: Doomsday and Clayface trailers, survive another cheerful hour in Westeros, and set sail with Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey. Episode Index Intro: 0:07 Doomsday Trailer: 12:19 WBD/Paramount News: 20:40 Clayface Trailer: 28:54 House of the Dragon Season 3, Episode 5: 36:45 X-Men ’97 Season 2, Episode 6: 50:20 The Odyssey: 60:00:30 Paramount-Warner Bros. Merger Paused as States' Challenge Proceeds A federal judge has granted a bid from a coalition of 12 states to temporarily stop Paramount from closing its $111 billion takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery. U.S. District Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín on Monday issued a temporary restraining order after the states sued last week. The emergency motion sought to prevent the studio from moving ahead with the merger for 14 days. “The Court ultimately finds the public interest favors their requested TRO to stay the merger in the interim,” Martínez-Olguín wrote in the order. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/business-news/paramount-warner-bros-merger-paused-states-challenge-1236651179/ Avengers: Doomsday | Official Trailer | In Theaters December 18 In Avengers: Doomsday, universes collide as the Multiverse Saga enters its final chapter. The Avengers, New Avengers, Fantastic Four, and X-Men converge across realities to face Doctor Doom, an existential threat. The film sets the stage for a universe-shattering conflict that paves the way for Avengers: Secret Wars. Clayface | Official Trailer Clayface, explores Hagen's psychological descent from a tragic victim into a revenge-filled monster, delving into themes of lost identity, corrosive love, and the dark side of scientific ambition. While originally pitched as a standalone horror film, it is now framed as the story of a disfigured victim driven by obsession rather than a traditional villain origin. The movie is scheduled for release in theaters on October 23, 2026. House of the Dragon (HBO Max) House of the Dragon, Season 3, Episode 5 Title: Unbowed and Unbent Air date: July 19, 2026 Director: Nina Lopez-Corrado Writer: Philippa Goslett Summary: As the hunt for Aemond and Vhagar continues, Rhaenyra's grip on King's Landing grows shakier and Daemon tries to contain a campaign of increasingly gruesome violence. Alicent and Helaena search for a way out of the city, Alys Rivers tightens her hold over a recovering Aemond, and Ormund begins positioning Daeron as a rival king. Meanwhile, Criston Cole marches toward what looks increasingly like an elaborate suicide-by-Riverlander, while a bloody “feast for traitors” makes it clear that Team Black has enemies hiding everywhere. Rating Out of 5, That’s One Hell of a Last Super Art Installation Brian: 3.68/5 Darryl: 3.4/5 X-Men '97 (Disney+) X-Men '97, Season 2, Episode 6 Title: Danger.exe Air date: July 22, 2026 Director: Emmett Yonemura Writers: Beau DeMayo, Mariah Wilson, and Bailey Moore Summary: Polaris returns to Xavier's mansion just as the Danger Room develops a mind—and several grudges—of its own. Xavier's unhealthy habit of repeatedly simulating Magneto's death helps transform the training system into a very real threat, forcing the mutants to confront what their home has become. Meanwhile, Xavier launches X-Corp as the team's new public-facing operation, while Apocalypse completes a resurrection that turns an old friend into something much more dangerous. Because apparently grief counseling was never an option. Rating Out of 5, You’re in the Dangerzone… err… Room Now Charles Brian: 4.33/5 Darryl: 4/5 The Odyssey (2026) Release Date: July 17, 2026 Runtime: 172 minutes Director: Christopher Nolan Writer: Christopher Nolan Based On: The Odyssey by Homer Studios: Universal Pictures, Syncopy, and Woodsted Picture Company Distributor: Universal Pictures Summary: After the fall of Troy, Odysseus, king of Ithaca, begins a brutal voyage home to his wife Penelope and son Telemachus. His journey becomes a years-long battle against monsters, gods, temptation, grief, and his own worst instincts, while the family he left behind struggles against the suitors consuming his kingdom. Christopher Nolan turns Homer's foundational epic into a massive, brooding survival story about war, memory, loyalty, and the consequences of being the cleverest man in every room. Main Cast: Matt Damon as Odysseus Tom Holland as Telemachus Anne Hathaway as Penelope Robert Pattinson as Antinous Lupita Nyong'o as Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra Zendaya as Athena Charlize Theron as Calypso Samantha Morton as Circe Jon Bernthal as Menelaus Benny Safdie as Agamemnon John Leguizamo as Eumaeus Himesh Patel as Eurylochus Ellen Page as Sinon Mia Goth as Melantho Production Notes: The Odyssey reunites Christopher Nolan with producer Emma Thomas and the Syncopy team behind Oppenheimer. Nolan wrote, directed, and produced the film, which was shot around the world and became the first feature photographed entirely with IMAX film cameras. The production built much of its ancient world practically and mounted a full-scale, globe-spanning shoot designed to make Odysseus' voyage feel physical, dangerous, and appropriately enormous. SPOILER WARNING: About 8 minutes in, Jason spoils a plot point from the first trade of Matt Fraction's Batman run. Just FYI! I know we spoil comics all the time (its kind of what we do) but they're usually MUCH older than that.We continue with New Avengers, continuing to agree that Bendis is doing a better job than we thought, but not as good as we'd hoped after reading the first two issues. What arouses our ire and our appreciation? Listen in to find out!

This week we go fully corporate: Top 5 Corporate & Tech Jargon — the phrases designed to sound like progress while delivering absolutely nothing. We're talking circle back, take it offline, pivot, blue-sky thinking, synergy, and the whole “results-driven ecosystem” dialect spoken exclusively by people who describe themselves as “thought leaders” on LinkedIn.Then we hit the main feature: Thunderbolts* — Marvel's surprisingly sincere group-therapy movie disguised as an action film. Think The Breakfast Club, but everyone's a government assassin and the villain is basically existential depression with god-tier powers.Standard warning: we spoil. A lot. With confidence. What we talked aboutTop 5 Corporate / Techno-babbleWhy corporate language exists: credibility theatre, hiding behind vague phrasing, and “sounding senior” without committing to anything. The difference between useful technical language vs bullshit camouflage (and why “take it offline” can mean “I'm seething”).Techno-babble in movies: Back to the Future's flux capacitor, Avengers physics word-salad (quantum tunneling, heavy ion fusion, Coulomb barrier), and classic Star Trek “modulate the phase variance” nonsense. The “pivot” moment that sneaks into real life: Friends and the cursed sofa stairwell.Thunderbolts*Why this one lands better than recent Marvel: less quippy noise, more consistent tone, and a third act that's actually about something. The set-up: a clean-up operation that becomes a trap, plus Marvel's best “oh, we're definitely all going to die” elevator pitch.Bob / Sentry / The Void: a superhuman project gone wrong, and a villain that manifests as the darkest version of yourself. The big swing: a finale that avoids sky-portals and CGI armies and instead goes for inner trauma + solidarity (yes, basically an emotional intervention). The asterisk explained: the film's marketing payoff and the “New Avengers” naming chaos. The rough edges: runtime bloat, plot convenience, and the return of accents that should've stayed retired.Bonus life adminWalking football cup semi-final madness (knees sacrificed, glory secured).Random watches: Tarot (not recommended), “Lords of Metal” (unexpectedly wholesome), and a bit of hype for upcoming Peaky Blinders and Baz Luhrmann's Elvis project. If you're even slightly Marvel'd-out but still want something that tries to have a heart, Thunderbolts* is one of the more watchable recent entries — and if you've ever died inside hearing “let's circle back,” the Top 5 segment is basically free therapy. You can now text us anonymously to leave feedback, suggest future content or simply hurl abuse at us. "This episode continues our deep dive into the 'Time Runs Out' arc, covering *Avengers* #36 and *New Avengers* #25. In *Avengers* #36, we witness the emotional return of Cannonball and Smasher with their new baby, Josiah, as the wider Avengers team, led by Sunspot, gears up for a desperate, one-way mission across the dying multiverse. Odinson, Hyperion, Starbrand, Abyss, and the Ex Nihilii brave the unknown via the Auger, facing the ultimate sacrifice. Meanwhile, in *New Avengers* #25, the fugitive Illuminati are on the run and immediately thrust into crisis, scrambling to access Tony Stark's files while evading capture. Amadeus Cho is interrogated by a determined Susan Richards, and the stark reality of the incursions hits home with a devastating message from Black Panther: Wakanda has fallen. Join us as we explore these two converging narratives of heroism, sacrifice, and the terrifying approach of multiversal collapse!"

Sometimes they're personally meaningful, sometimes it's "I read this a few months ago and its still sticking around."This month I'm welcoming on letterer extraordinaire Clayton Cowles (pronounced like Coals or Kohl's.) We're talking "New Avengers" (2005) #27-37, which I probably said was from 2004 because that's when the first issue was first on stands. But who am I to argue with cover dates and the Marvel Wiki? For some bonafides, Clayton is the Eisner-award winning letterer of so many books. You probably know him from most Kieron Gillen joints: "The Wicked + the Divine," "The Power Fantasy," "Journey Into Mystery," "Eternals" Vol. 5, "Die." Did you know he does both "Batman" books? What about "Star Wars?" "Helen of Wyndhorn?" Thompson & co.'s sadly now ended "Birds of Prey?" So many great books!Next time, we should be reading the original "Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars" from 1984! All twelve issues. Get ready for a fun one folks. You can find it collected as "Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars" or on Marvel Unlimited.Elias can be found writing here at eliasrwrites.ghost.io. Clayton can be found wherever comics are sold, on Bluesky @claytoncowles.bsky.social, and via his newsletter. Our theme music is “Excelsior” by Carol Romo and our audio editor is me, Elias. If the episode is too quiet or, maybe, too loud, or even too full of page turning foley, blame him.The show is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, (Stitcher is apparently dead and buried) and other places so please subscribe!

On today's episode, I talk to comics writer Brian Michael Bendis. Originally from Cleveland, OH, Brian knew from an early age he wanted to make comics. His late teens and twenties were spent making his own comics, some of them published by Caliber Press, and in 1996, a lot of this work was collected together at Image. This led to working on the Spawn spin-off Sam and Twitch, and in 1998, he began releasing Powers, which would go on to garner both critical and commercial success, as well as Harvey and Eisner Awards. In 2000, Brian co-created Miles Morales when he began writing Ultimate Spider-Man. The next year, Brian began a defining run on Daredevil and co-created Jessica Jones with the start of Alias. And this is essentially just the first decade of his career! Since then, he went on to write defining runs on comics like Avengers and New Avengers, events like House of M, books like Superman and Action Comics for DC, and most recently, for the 25th anniversary of Powers, Brian and artist Michael Avon Oeming are creating a new 12-issue series at Dark Horse, and it's great!
