Her passion for social impact is marked by a quiet courage towards exploring complex social issues that often breed division through the lens of her camera. Have you ever wondered about the modern trend of deconstruction within Christianity, especially amongst the younger generation? Join me as I engage in a thought-provoking conversation with Braxton Hunter, president of Trinity College of the Bible and Theological Seminary. We explore this deeply fascinating phenomenon in depth, digging into its roots and implications for the faith journey. We discuss its evolution from a healthy process of critical thinking to a path away from conservative, bible-based Christianity for some, and the critical importance of teaching our children to think for themselves. We're also not shying away from the challenging discourse around LGBT issues in Christian doctrine, addressing the harmful dichotomy often perpetuated by churches and the changing attitudes towards sin. We dismantle the misconceptions connected with 1 Corinthians 6, 9-11, bringing a fresh perspective to the expectations and burdens put on Christians, and how it impacts our understanding of selfhood in Christ. We speak candidly about the guilt, shame, and harm that can arise from these misunderstandings, highlighting the urgent need for Christians to stand with those grappling with sin. Finally, we dive into the powerful effects of social issues on deconstruction and deconversion, and how the dialogue on biblical sexuality can push people to question their beliefs. Braxton shares his insight on the shifting attitudes towards the LGBT community within Christian doctrine and how the gospel offers everyone, regardless of their struggles with sexuality, a promise of hope and acceptance. This episode is a must-listen for those seeking a deeper understanding of these pressing issues in contemporary Christianity. In a picturesque and historic home nestled on the edges of Sonoita, we had the pleasure of meeting our next guest, Tami Blakely. Her stunning property, complete with an expansive view and a pack of six Ridgebacks, set the stage for our conversation.Tami is a true Arizona native, hailing from a family with deep roots in the state—fifth generation, to be precise. Her family's journey began with the ownership of the only original general store in their area. Over time, they transitioned into the oil and gas industry, becoming prominent players in the Wickenburg, Arizona region as the state developed. Our introduction to Tami came through another guest on the show, Terri Malloy. We had the privilege of participating in a three-day equine therapy retreat at the Blakely Ranch, an experience that left a profound impact on us. Equine therapy, for those unfamiliar, is a powerful and transformative healing modality. It allows clients to communicate and connect with horses in profound ways, leading to personal growth and insights.Tami's role in this retreat was multi-faceted. First and foremost, she's a bona fide cowgirl, contributing a deep knowledge of equine interactions. Secondly, her coaching skills are top-notch, helping clients navigate their emotions and experiences during the therapy. The third, and perhaps most remarkable, attribute is her gift of sensing people's emotional states and the presence of things seen and unseen. Our conversation with Tami was nothing short of fascinating. She effortlessly responded to our questions, often revealing the answer before we finished reading them. Her personal story, while tragic and at times unimaginable in its hardships, has shaped her into the extraordinary person she is today. She's estranged from her family due to circumstances beyond her control, yet she's taken every life challenge and turned it into her life's purpose. Tami Blakely serves as a shining example of how to transform adversity into strength and purpose. Join us, Tami, and The Jar in this captivating episode that showcases the power of resilience and the human spirit. In the picturesque hills of Sonoita, Arizona, we had the privilege of meeting our next guest, Annaliese, in her beautiful home nestled into the hillside.Annaliese's life journey began in Kingston, Jamaica, where her family had relocated due to her father's work as a builder of factories. Growing up in Kingston provided her with a unique and vibrant childhood, complete with all the challenges of a developing country. Eventually, life led them to a small town in Oregon, where Annaliese fell in love with the simplicity and charm of rural living, especially her deep connection with animals. She shared the challenges of growing up in a household marked by her father's struggles with alcohol and abuse, a situation that eventually led to her mother's departure, leaving behind three brothers.Annaliese's journey took an exciting turn when she joined the Blakely Ranch Equine Retreat, working alongside our other guest, Tami Blakely. This retreat allowed her to tap into her incredible hosting skills, opening her home to participants and exploring her catering expertise by partnering with events like this. Her wife, Deanna, also played an essential role by graciously opening up their home to support Annaliese's endeavors.During our conversation, Annaliese opened up about a profoundly personal and touching moment regarding forgiveness. She candidly discussed her decision to have an abortion and the complex emotions that often accompany such decisions, especially when reflecting on them in later years. We also delved into the delightful story of how Annaliese met her wife, which added a touch of humor and warmth to our conversation.Annaliese's story is that of a truly beautiful human being, and we are grateful to have met her on this journey with The Jar. As a program that seeks to provide a platform for voices on the frontlines of combating human trafficking, Chris Meek is honored to have Gayle Smith, the founder and leader of Dahlia Grove, join him on this installment of Next Steps Forward. In 2016, Gayle took her passion for helping women victimized by the human trafficking crisis and turned it into action by founding Dahlia Grove out of a massive and ever growing need to serve victims. Acknowledging the extensive pain and suffering experienced by those who have been trafficked, Gayle set out to create a plan to address the complex challenges. She will speak to the research she conducted, her visits with other successful programs and how she identified gaps and shortfalls of other programs in her own effort to craft a plan and program to make an even greater difference. While Dahlia Grove is a relatively new venture, Gayle's experience and work history blend to make her not only an outstanding advocate, but also an exceptional leader. The Next Steps Forward audience will take away many messages throughout the hour, including steps that can be taken to combat human trafficking, how we can all make a positive impact on the lives of those who have been affected by trafficking and how to cultivate effective leadership and team building skills to make a difference in our own communities.
We had the pleasure of meeting Judha Merez, also known as Mickey, in her home on a tranquil suburban street in Los Cruces during the Labor Day weekend. The vibe of the Southwest desert landscapes and the comfortable homes added a unique flavor to our conversation.Judha welcomed us at her kitchen table, ready to embark on her journey with The Jar. Born in 1996 in San Antonio, she grew up in a bustling household with nine siblings. Here's where things get intriguing: her father was a general in the Hebrew Israeli army, which at one point was investigated by the FBI as a black militant organization. Judha describes it as a misogynistic cult, adding complexity to her early life.Life at home was further complicated as her father was a polygamist. The family eventually left San Antonio when she was four, distancing themselves from the organization, and settled in New Mexico. Albuquerque became her home until she turned 12.Judha paints a picture of challenging times during her childhood. Her father ruled with corporal punishment, instilling fear in her and her siblings. Her mother often stayed at work to avoid her father, leaving the kids exposed to violence in various forms.Interestingly, music became a bond between Judha and her father, particularly his music. She was drawn to hip-hop, appreciating the power of language as a weapon through lyrics. This led her to make her recording debut at the age of 21, with her music now available on various platforms. Around the same time, she found herself returning to her childhood home to live once again.Today, some years later, Judha Merez stands as a confident young individual, living with her partner and pursuing her dreams.
