We head to Australia this week to chat to North Sydney parkrunner David Crook who has just written a book celebrating parkrun's first decade Down Under. He tells us how he went about the research for the book and shares some stories about the people and places that make parkrun in Australia so popular.
This week we bask in the amazing highlights that parkrun brings us, even when our hosts are both in lockdown! Mel catches up with Caitlin Adams of Team Tempo after her new parkrun global women's record at Lochiel parkrun. Olly chats with author David Crook about his inspiration and experience behind the new book “On every Saturday”, which celebrates 10 years of parkrun in Australia. Also, Alison reports in from Sherwood Reserve parkrun as she completes the final puzzle piece of her NZ Countryman puzzle and we have all the latest stats from The Informant and plenty of excitement at Dazza's, as we hear from Team Lockdown and Team actual parkrun, and all the fun around it!
How do you become a pilot? Dervish is talking to David Crook, commercial airline pilot and author of ‘A Pilot's Life For Me' He explains why his book is an insight into how to go about becoming a pilot and includes everything from what to put in your flight bag, to medical exclusions and what to expect to be paid. He also talks about the planes he loves to fly, the best and most challenging airports to take off land at and how pilots maintain their flying hours. David and Dervish also discuss the future of flying and the possibilities of flying cars as a viable commercial entity and what it will take for this to become a reality. KEY TAKEAWAYS Flying the Boeing is a more classic pilot experience whereas the airbus has more technology to assist the pilot. The airbus is easy to land without much effort due to the technology. As a pilot, you have to keep up your flying hours. At the moment pilots are using extended time in simulators. You have to achieve a set number of hours flying a plane to maintain your licence Helicopters are very different to fixed-wing aircraft and you require a different licence London city is a challenging airport its narrow and has buildings on all sides. Bird strikes on planes cause lots of damage to planes I would love to have flown Concorde but it came to a natural end because of the world moving forward It would be great to see Concorde at air shows but the cost would probably be prohibitive Air taxis are likely to be a reality but not at the moment. It's not the technology its more about the infrastructure for it to be able to work effectively I'd love to see a future with flying cars even if it put me out of a job Now turn around times are much shorter so it can be much more difficult to spend time with passengers BEST MOMENTS ‘Flying the airbus is a hell of a kick' ‘People just don't know what to expect or what to do if they want to be a pilot so the book includes everything about becoming a pilot' ‘Flying is a beautiful thing and if you are able to fly it's a great past time' VALUABLE RESOURCES Full Throttle With Dervish podcast A Pilot's Life For Me: A guide on how to become an airline pilot - David Crook https://www.facebook.com/apilotslifeforme https://www.instagram.com/apilotslifeformeuk/ ABOUT THE HOST Dervish is a Spacecraft Designer and a Mechanical Engineer by day and podcaster by night. David Crook is a Microsoft Developer Evangelist formerly of Microsoft Consulting Services. He is focused on Data Science, Machine Learning and High Performance Computing. He is also known as the Mad Scientist on his team. Show notes at http://hellotechpros.com/david-crook-technology/ Key Takeaways Are you a mad scientist? Scientist = someone who pursues knowledge in a structured way Mad = uncontrollable and disastrous Twitter is a cesspit of language Studying the interactions of AI is really the study of how real humans interact Many experts in the field of data science are mathematicians first and programmers second It's all about being able to prove your results and make sure they are consistent and reproducible Using math models to represent the data instead of a lot of if-then-else blocks SCADA systems in oil and gas industry has very complex problems of monitoring 100,000's of data points and analyzing for leaks, equipment failures, etc Azure machine learning tool has given the old systems an easy UI Experts can build and train a model in less than a day, used to take months Allows data scientists to solve different types of problems faster Get nice added features that didn't get before The amount of machine learning capabilities available on high-end cell phones are incredible Some problems may be able to move out of the cloud and onto the device You can distribute map/reduce problems to cell phones More programming languages are supporting machine learning frameworks, meaning more developers can solve machine learning problems If you want to get into machine learning, just start building Find a problem and start working on it from a mathematical perspective Resources Mentioned How to build a talking teddy bear Microsoft Tay Tay became a racist jerk after learning from Twitter Azure Machine Learning Tensorflow CNTK Sponsors BookMoreNights.com - Is your vacation rental property fully booked 100% of the time?
