This week on The Sing Out! Radio Magazine we celebrate that most American of holidays - St. Patrick's Day! The date is commemorated in Ireland as the anniversary of the death of St. Patrick who, in the 5th century brought Christianity to Ireland. Nothing in their tradition features green beer or corned beef and cabbage – those are pretty much American features. We'll listen to Irish music from America, Canada, Germany and yes, Ireland: songs and tunes from Declan O'Rourke, Cathy Ryan, Kevin Burke, Stout, Dervish, We Banjo 3 and many more. Dogs with jobs pays an early morning visit to the Hursley Hambledon pack of English Foxhounds in their lodges. Amid the early morning excitement of the pack, Kennel huntsman Keiran gives an insight into pack life. He explains that there's no a particular "top dog" among the boys. The social hierarchy is more complex and changeable among the girls. Surprisingly, the individual canine most "in charge" is not a foxhound at all - but a pint-sized terrier called Poppy. With at least one, occasionally two litters a year, scenting talent and knowhow is passed down the generations within the pack over time, as older hounds retire and the youngsters join. Ethno-Religious and Linguistic Minorities in Iran, Part I: IntroductionIran's religious landscape is deeply intertwined with its political identity, heavily influenced by Shi'ite Islam. The Iranian constitution recognizes Islam as the official religion, with Christianity, Judaism, and Zoroastrianism being the only other faiths granted legal minority status. However, this narrow definition fails to capture the true diversity of the country, leaving significant groups like Sunni Muslims, Mandaeans, Yarsan, and Dervishes in ambiguous and often marginalized positions.
Sunni Muslims, although the largest religious group after the Shia majority, are relegated to a marginal status due to the Shi'ite-centric nature of the state. Similarly, Mandaeans and Yarsan, with their esoteric beliefs, struggle for recognition and face social and legal discrimination. The Dervish sects, considered heterodox, are sometimes tolerated but have also faced persecution.
The exclusion of these groups from official recognition and discourse creates a sense of antagonism and precariousness, reducing their identities to non-existence or vulnerability. The state's rigid interpretation of religious identity fails to encompass the full spectrum of beliefs within Iran, leading to ongoing controversies and human suffering.
In essence, Iran's dominant religious discourse is an ideological straitjacket that overlooks the country's rich religious variety, resulting in a fractured society where many communities live on the fringes, unrecognized and often oppressed.#@Iran #@Religious Minorities #@Religions in Iran#@Judaism #@Bahais #@Armenians #@Yarsan #@Ahle Hagh #@Zoroastrianism

Mike Coombs messaged me: "Hi Marc, I'm listening to your brilliant podcast for the first time in ages, recovering from an awful week of covid  -  it's still with us and very real. I've been vaccinated and had the booster shots and I'm pretty fit but it was still awful, so goodness knows what it would have been like if hadn't been vaccinated! Anyway I just wanted to say how uplifting and healing it is to listen to such great music. Thank you so much for producing this. I can afford to subscribe only a small amount each month but it is worth very much more. As a musician myself I appreciate how much a show like this can help what is not the most popular music in the world  -  even though it should be  -  to come to the attention of more people. It is great to hear so many great musicians and tunes that I have never heard before. You just mentioned Heather Dale whose album  Fairytale I bought after hearing her on your show  so I shall make sure to check out your next podcast! When I am better I shall probably send you an old recorded track of mine that you may want to play. I am hoping to get an album mastered as soon as I can afford it, but this track I think fits the Celtic criteria so it would be interesting to see what you and your listeners if you decide to play it think. All the best and keep producing these great podcasts " W Danny Studstill sent some photos on Facebook: "We build shillelaghs while we listen ☘️"

Marjie Kennedy replied to the Celtic Music Magazine feedback request: "I wanted to let you know that on March 17th I will be at the Hibernian parade in the Dogtown neighborhood of St. Louis Missouri.  St. Louis has two parades each year because the Dogtown one is on March 17 every year, and the downtown St. Louis one is always the Saturday before St. Patrick's Day (unless the 17th falls on a Saturday, in which case I think they end up both being the same day). I will listen to your podcasts either before or after those festivities. And this past Sunday, March 12, I celebrated by including some Celtic music and other Irish tunes on the radio program that I host on KDHX.org called Lotsa A Cappella. Thanks for all you do for Celtic music!" Tera Bochik replied: "I'm usually driving around doing my patrol rounds as a security guard. Unfortunately I have to work on St. Patrick's day. (Missing the First Annual 20th World's Shortest St. Patrick's Day parade in Hot Springs, AR.) I celebrate by listening and sharing about the podcast to anyone who asks what I'm listening to." Von Rothenberger replied from Lucas, Kansas: "Happy Birthday! Erin Go Braugh! Thank you for all that you do." Rick Cunningham of Boxing Robin replied: "Hello Marc, Many thanks for including Boxing Robin on Vol 2 of the St. Patrick's Day podcast! Have fun at the gig tonight -  we're playing 80 miles away but at least it's a fairly early gig! All the best. Ethan Sellers of Logical Fleadh emailed: "Hey Marc - Just wanted to send a belated thank - you for the Mother's Day spin.  Such a nice thing to highlight the women in Celtic music.  The strong presence of women  -  especially instrumentalists  -  in traditional music is one of the things I really appreciate about the field. Cheers," Ann Peck McBride emailed: "I first heard the podcast about 13 years ago! And it's taken me all this time to become a Patreon member. Sorry, Marc! I'm embarrassed to say I listen to your podcast while I'm doing housework. (It's a treat I give myself so that I'll actually do the housework) I am always surprised at the wonderful new Celtic artists you play. I first listened to you because I needed to hear all the Celtic music I could. I listen now, partly for that reason, and partly because for the last few years, I have co - hosted a Celtic Music Hour program in Salem Oregon, on KMUZ. As my friend (and I think yours) Steve Behrens said, "We've fallen down the rabbit hole of Celtic music!" And here in the Pacific Northwest, we have a LOT of Celtic musicians... Thanks" Debra Roche emailed a photo: "Hello, Mark, I recently played your St Patrick's Day 2023 podcast from SiriusXM and loved it! Many years ago (1985 - 1991)I had opened The Celtic Cottage & Roche's of Ireland in Davenport, & Bettendorf, IA which brought me to do an Irish show at St Ambrose University for their college radio show. How much fun that time in my life was! Whenever you give back to your community it is just the best when your family roots are connected! As my father's parents where from County Limerick Ireland. Glin & New Castle West. Hope you're well and thank you for your music podcast!” Melissa Helman emailed a photo of her dirty dishes: "So exciting, I know. Keep up the great work with the podcast." Christopher Patrick of Salem, MA emailed a couple photos: "Hello Mark! I can't tell you how happy I am to have discovered the ‘Irish & Celtic Music Podcast!' But I'm gonna try, all the same! You see, in my childhood, my 5 siblings and I would get loaded up into our family station wagon every Saturday morning by our mother. She would then proceed to drive us all into Boston for our weekly Irish Step Dancing lessons. Our rides both in and back were spent listening to Boston's AM's radio show, ‘The Irish Hour,' and later, ‘The Irish Hit Parade,' (still on the air to this day!) So, those jigs and reels were ingrained in us in our step dancing, and the other traditional music was from our rides there and home. My mother soon landed us an agent, and we, the six kids, danced all around the Greater Boston area. So, it is no real big surprise that these days, I play in an Irish Music Band with my family. Comprised of myself, my brother, two sisters, and brother - in - law, we perform under the name of ‘FitzBlarney,' based in Salem, Massachusetts. I've attached a coupla' photos for you, too  -  one of the six of us in our 1970s step - dancing attire, and one from this past St. Patrick's Day, where FitzBlarney played out at The Witches Brew pub in Salem. The music you play means a lot to me, so, I recently became a patron. Just out of appreciation! Thanks again, and ‘Sláinte!' P.S. I would love to one day get on your podcast! That'd be so cool!"

Synopsis La Valse -- one of the most popular orchestral works of Maurice Ravel -- was performed for the first time this day in 1920 by the Lamoureux Orchestra in Paris, conducted by Camille Chevillard. Ravel's score was subtitled a "choreographic poem for orchestra in the tempo of the Viennese waltz." La Valse is a far more Impressionistic work than any of the waltzes by the Strauss Family. It is certainly darker. Ravel himself said, "I had intended this work to be a kind of apotheosis of the Viennese waltz, with which was associated in my imagination an impression of a fantastic and fatal kind of Dervish's dance." La Valse was written for the great ballet impresario Serge Diagalev, who apparently found it undanceable, and his failure to stage La Valse caused a serious rift in his friendship with Ravel. The contemporary composer Judith Lang Zaimont is an unabashed Ravel enthusiast—"Ravel's music defines 'gorgeous,'" says Zaimoint, "it's beguiling to the ear, and sensuous. His textures are built in thin layers, like a Napoleon pastry, and his intricate surfaces—beautifully worked-out—shine and fascinate." Judith Lang Zaimont should know. For many years she taught composition at the University of Minnesota, and her own solo piano, chamber and orchestra works are increasingly finding their way into concert halls and onto compact disc. Music Played in Today's Program Maurice Ravel (1875 -1937) La Valse Boston Symphony; Charles Munch, cond.
