“Hope is believing in advance what can only be understood in reverse.”These words have been the rally cry of my soul for over a decade now, but I didn't come up with them myself. Philip Yancey did. This gentle, thoughtful writer has spent his career exploring the topic of suffering which, as you can imagine, has meant so much to me. Today I have the honor of sitting down with Philip to talk about some things that we can't understand today, but trust we'll understand some day. (Like his recent Parkinson's diagnosis.)This hour with Philip filled my soul, and I think it'll do the same for you. Here's what you can expect if you join us in the conversation:Why pain is not the enemyThe most helpful definition of health I've heard yetWe can receive God's comfort, even when we don't understand HimStewarding the suffering we never wantedThe best thing we can be for God to use usIf you need a compassionate, encouraging voice speaking into your suffering—whatever it may be—then this episode is for you!Show Notes:Where Is God When It Hurts by Philip Yancey - https://a.co/d/6xf3QxVThe Gift of Pain: Why We Hurt and What We Can Do About It by Philip Yancey and Dr. Paul Brand - https://a.co/d/3GapVr9“Parkinson's—The Gift I Didn't Want” by Philip Yancey for Christianity Today - https://www.christianitytoday.com/2023/02/philip-yancey-ct-parkinsons-diagnosis-gift-i-didnt-want/How Should We Then Live?: The Rise and Decline of Western Thought and Culture by Francis A. Es asombroso como las células de mi cuerpo, ya no tan joven como me gustaría, todavía permanecen activas a las órdenes de su ADN, o de como se llame el lugar de donde proceden esos misteriosos mecanismos que llevan a la reconstrucción de los tejidos dañados.

Fair warning, this episode is ALL over the place!  You will laugh and maybe cringe at my faux pas. You might cry with me at the end of the episode, and you'll definitely learn about a lot of great books. In this episode I get to talk to my dear friend Elsie Iudicello.  Elsie is a wife to my friend Jeff, and mom to 4 boys. Elsie lives in Florida where she is a farmer, a writer, a reader, a cook, and one of the most compelling and hilarious speakers I have ever the pleasure of hearing.  Here are some highlights from our conversation: *Elsie tells me she loves old movies but also loves natural disaster movies. *Well, only one really. The movie Twister. For an interesting reason! *This is when I suggest another movie Elsie might like but that doesn't actually exist and if it did, you might see it behind the curtain at Blockbuster. Enjoy the laughter that ensues. I'm never going to live this one down. *Elsie shares: “books bonded us in the beginning because we got to go play in different worlds together, and that has sustained us in the teen years. *We can meet on the bridge of a story. *Kids want a book where the author isn't talking down to them. That doesn't preach at them or sanitize everything. *Reading biographies and especially missionary biographies are so good for our kids to read. *Give them books about people stepping out of their comfortable worlds. Read those things into their hearts! * I want my kids to get to know people who have had to fight for their faith. * Parents need to be readers too. Because this statistic is true and makes my heart sad. “roughly a quarter of American adults say they haven't read a book in whole or in part in the past year in print, electronic or even in audio form”. *”Don't be in such a hurry to read the great books that you miss the good books.” Cindy Rawlins *On re-reading books: “I would rather be friends with 40 or 50 good dear books than read all the books in the world once.” *Find Elsie on Instagram at Farmhouse Schoolhouse  Here's a list of all the books we mention in this episode: Ourselves by Charlotte Mason The Emperor's Handbook by Marcus Aurelius The Good Master by Kate Seredy Farmer Boy by Laura Ingalls Wilder The Railway Children by Edith Nesbit Little Britches by Ralph Moody Wind and the Willows by Kenneth Grahame Green Ember by S. The proximity of the Passover pushed Jesus to journey to Jerusalem and upon his arrival, he discovered a bustling marketplace within the temple. Outraged by the degradation of his Father's house, Jesus took stern action against the merchants and money changers, evicting them from the sacred space. The Jews questioned Jesus's authority to conduct as such, to which he cryptically suggested that they destroy the temple, and he would rebuild it in three days. He was alluding to the resurrection of his body, a truth that the disciples would only grasp after his miraculous return from the dead. Jesus, time and time again, entered this temple, especially during the Passover. The sight of livestock pens filled with cattle, sheep, and birds, alongside money changers, had become familiar. All these rituals followed religious mandates, including the first commandment of not making an idol or a graven image. However, this day felt different. Despite everything seemingly in place as per usual, Jesus experienced a powerful urge to expel all beings and activities from the temple. He could sense something wrong, a glitch in the system. He was not merely challenging minor financial malpractices or money changers extracting a small profit; his grievance was much deeper. He advocated for a disintegration of the entire temple system because it had outlived its purpose. He proclaimed himself as the new embodiment of the temple where divinity and humanity coexisted. He foretold his death and subsequent resurrection, a move so bold that it would bring a paradigm shift in the cosmos. Through his confrontational actions and forewarning about his resurrection, Jesus called out the inflexible religious system and encouraged a new perspective of the world. His unique and audacious claim, supported by his resurrection, had the power to change the world. Yet, the world today still grapples with many of the same sins and shortcomings. Therefore, Jesus's challenge to religious intransigence serves as a reminder for us to view the world differently – from the foot of the cross and the empty tomb. The story about Paul Brand, a surgeon serving leprosy patients in India, offers a glimpse of this new perspective. In his address to the leprosy-stricken community, Dr. Brand drew a parallel between the deformed hands of the patients and Jesus's scarred hands, marking a shift in their perception of themselves. They were no longer outcasts but became part of Christ's crucified and resurrected body. Thus, it is evident that awareness of Jesus's sacrifice can fundamentally alter the world's view and influence individuals to challenge the status quo. May this revelation continue to inspire disciples to embrace the world with a renewed vision and change their habitual patterns towards a new, dignified existence.

Having spent the majority of his medical career serving disenfranchised communities in India, the doctor Paul Brand made this striking observation after his return to the United States: "Patients [in the U.S.] lived at a greater comfort level than any I had previously treated, but they seemed far less equipped to handle suffering and far more traumatized by it.” This statement is not meant to shame or insult in any way, but it does carry a very important observation: the lens through which we view life will give us either stronger or weaker resources for navigating the realities of heartache, disappointment, suffering and injustice. Yet, as we'll see from 1 Peter 4:12-19, in a cultural moment that offers relatively shallow resources for navigating suffering, the way of Jesus gives us strong resources to hopefully endure the real pain of suffering as we frame it in light of the true story of fall and redemption, see in it the purifying purposes of God, and experience in it the mysterious, suffering love of Jesus.

Today's episode is a real treat. That's because I'm talking to an underwriter with encyclopaedic knowledge and over thirty-five years in the insurance industry. But what makes this interview special is that I am talking to someone with huge experience but very specifically the opportunity to put all that experience into practice for a second time. Paul Brand was Chief Underwriting Officer at Catlin for almost thirty years. Just under five years ago he founded Convex Stephen Catlin, taking over the CEO role in in the summer of 2022. Convex is proof that there's nothing like knowing what to do and how to do it to help with speed of execution. It took over 30 years to get Catlin group to a GWP of just under $6bn. As Convex approaches its 5th birthday its likely to surpass $4bn in GWP this calendar year. But listening back, this podcast is really about underwriting. It's about how to be a good underwriter but more importantly how to build and scale an excellent underwriting business. Paul Brand is someone who has spent most of his career outside the limelight and it's really enjoyable to witness him moving to the centre stage and making his distinctive voice heard. He's very considered and thoughtful but at the same time full of dry humour. He's also incredibly generous with his time and highly tolerant of me and my constant questioning. When we return to the story our bodies have carried over the years, we are invited into a journey of processing the past and reclaiming the goodness God intended for our bodies to bring to the world around us. Yet, for many, we forget the beautiful beginning our bodies tell. So, this is where I want to start. Returning to our beginning, the origin of our body is blessed and designed to reflect our Maker. We do this so that we can have a clear vision and reminder as we process the past in future episodes. Your Hope-Filled Perspective with Dr. Michelle Bengtson podcast

Episode Summary:  Have you ever thought about how to look at pain as a gift? Is it possible? In this episode, I talk with Tera Bradham DeNeui, a swimmer who had her sights on the Olympics until injury and chronic pain entered her life, changing the path God had for her. If you suffer with chronic pain, you won't want to miss her hope filled message. Quotables from the episode: When you can't hold on anymore, you have to trust that God is still holding on to you. Lord, complicate my life with a holy complication. My discipline with swimming led to my discipline in spending time with God in my daily quiet time. We are socialized to believe questioning God indicates a lack of faith. But in reality, asking God questions shows our trust and faith in God. If you find God in your suffering, and prove Him to be faithful, you will likely never walk away from Him. Your pain has a tendency to close you in and decreases your vision. Because we cannot turn off our pain, it forces us to look to God. Freedom is being able to live outside our circumstances and know that our pain doesn't define us. God's heart in suffering holds us in our suffering and redeems it. Because Jesus suffered, He understands our suffering. God heals people in the way that brings Him the most glory. While we may long for God to heal us physically, the ultimate healing is in our hearts.  Scripture References: Jeremiah 33:6-9 (Tera's life promise) “Nevertheless, I will bring health and healing to it; I will heal my people and will let them enjoy abundant peace and security. I will bring Judah and Israel back from captivity and I will rebuild them as they were before. I will cleanse them from all the sin they have committed against me and will forgive all their sins of rebellion against me. Then this city will bring me renown, joy, praise, and honor before all nations on earth that hear of all the good things I do for it; and they will be in awe and will tremble at the abundant peace and prosperity I provide for it.” Jeremiah 17:14 (NIV) “Heal me and I will be healed. Save me and I will be saved, for you are the one I praise.” 2 Corinthians 6:3-10 (NIV) “We put no stumbling block in anyone's path, so that our ministry may not be discredited. Rather, as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: in great endurance, in troubles hardships and distresses; in beatings, imprisonments, and riots; in hard work, sleepless nights, and hunger; in purity, understanding, patience and kindness; in the Holy Spirit and in sincere love; in truthful speech and in the power of God; with weapons of righteousness in the right hand and in the left; through glory and dishonor, good report and bad report; genuine, yet regarded as impostors; known, yet regarded as unknown; dying, and yet we live on; beaten, and yet not killed; sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; poor, yet making many people rich; having nothing, and yet possessing everything.” Hebrews 12:1-3 (NIV) “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before Him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” 2 Corinthians 12:9 (NIV) “But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”  Recommended Resources:  Swimming for Freedom: A True Story of Faith, Hope, and Victory by Tera Bradham  The Gift of Pain: Why We Hurt and What We Can Do About It by Dr. Paul Brand and Philip Yancey  The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma by Bessel Van Der Kolk, M.D. Suffer Strong: How to Survive Anything by Redefining Everything by Katherine & Jay Wolf Trusting God Through Cancer 1 Trusting God Through Cancer 2 Revive & Thrive Women's Conference Subdue Stress and Anxiety: Fifteen Experts Offer Comprehensive Tools in Ten Minutes a Day. French Friday: De-Radicalizing the Church & Learning from Atheists

In a recent article, Russell Moore lamented the captivity of evangelicals to conspiracy theories and political radicalization, but he argued “the problem is not in the pulpit” and “the problem isn't primarily in the pews either.” Instead, he believes the radicalization is happening outside the church. David French and Skye Jethani agree that radicalization is happing outside the church, but say there is also a real problem in the pews. What role do churches and pastors have in de-radicalizing evangelicals, and what's preventing them from speaking up and doing more? Then, French shares about a pro-life atheist who positively influenced his own values. That leads to a wider discussion about the importance of forming relationships with and engaging the ideas of those we disagree with. Rather than seeking the safety of never being challenged, welcoming the discomfort of divergent voices will provoke us toward growth and maturity. 0:00 - Intro 00:50 - De-radicalizing the church 38:11 - Learning from atheists 1:05:14 - Credits "Christian Political Ethics are Upside-Down" by David French (The Dispatch) - https://frenchpress.thedispatch.com/p/christian-political-ethics-are-upside "When the South Loosens Its Bible Belt" by Russell Moore (Christianity Today) - https://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2022/august-web-only/russell-moore-white-evangelicals-bible-belt-south-church.html "There Is a Secular Case for Life" by David French (The Dispatch) - https://frenchpress.thedispatch.com/p/there-is-a-secular-case-for-life "The Gift of Pain" by Paul Brand and Philip Yancey - https://amzn.to/3ArfV1w "What in the World?" Episode 510: The SBC Report and Rethinking Sexual Ethics with Christine Emba

The independent report about the cover-up of sexual abuse within the Southern Baptist Convention has been released, and it's far worse than anyone expected. What does it mean for the SBC and American evangelicalism in general? And Phil asks if there's a difference between engaging in godly cultural transformation and fighting a culture war. Was William Wilberforce a culture warrior? And when are we really seeking change, and when are we just virtue signaling? Then, Kaitlyn welcomes Washington Post opinion columnist and editor, Christine Emba, to discuss her new book “Rethinking Sex: A Provocation.” After interviewing dozens of young adults, Emba concludes that evangelical purity culture has problems, but so does the secular message of sex positivity. Instead, she draws from Christian theology and tradition to propose an ethical framework that goes beyond consent alone. Plus, Phil refuses to be concerned about an invasion of aggressive jumping worms.
