There are small, medium, and big films ... and then there are HUGE ones. Those epic films. that are grandiose spectacles. Gladiator was made to be one of those larger-than-life films. The battles, the colosseum, and everything are huge. Ridley Scott was the perfect director to bring this film to life, and Russell Crowe and Joaquim Phoenix are perfect foes battling it out. Gladiator is a lot of fun ... and there is a lot of heart and emotion to it as well. But does it still deserve to be recognized as the best of 2000? Does it still resonate after all these years?Listen to film critic Jack Ferdman's take on it as he analyzes everything about Gladiator, as well as many other films from that year, and hear which film he gives his Rewatch Oscar of 2000.Download, listen, and share ALL Rewatching Oscar episodes.SUBSCRIBE and FOLLOW Rewatching Oscar:Website: https://rewatchingoscar.buzzsprout.comApple Podcasts/iTunesSpotifyGoogle PodcastsiHeart RadioPodchaserPodcast AddictTuneInAlexaAmazon Overcasts Podcast Addict Player FMRSS Feed: https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/1815964.rssWebsite: https://rewatchingoscar.buzzsprout.comSocial Media Links: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, BlueSkyShare your thoughts and suggestions with us through:Facebook Messanger or email us atjack@rewatchingoscar.com or jackferdman@gmail.comMusic by TurpacShow Producer: Jack FerdmanPodcast Logo Design: Jack FerdmanMovie (audio) trailer courtesy of MovieClips Classic TrailersMovie (audio) clips courtesy of YouTubeSupport us by downloading, sharing, and giving us a 5-star Rating. How to Change Your Momentum When You're Stuck as a Creative If you're an artist or creative who feels stalled—like you've hit a wall in your motivation, progress, or passion—you're not alone. Whether it's burnout, fear, comparison, or just plain fatigue, creative momentum can vanish without warning. And getting it back? That can feel impossible. But here's the good news: momentum is a choice. Not something that magically returns when the conditions are perfect—but something you can actively create, even in the mess of real life. In this week's Acting Business Boot Camp podcast episode, I spoke with Stephen Ridley, musician, speaker, and founder of Ridley Academy, about exactly that. What unfolded was a deeply personal and practical roadmap for any artist who wants to stop stalling and start moving forward again. What Does It Mean to “Change Your Momentum”? Momentum isn't about working harder. It's about shifting the energy underneath your decisions. According to Stephen, the way we talk to ourselves—our internal attitude—shapes what happens next. He calls it the self-fulfilling nature of mindset. “Both negativity and positivity become self-fulfilling prophecies,” he says. “And both are equally available.” In other words, what you expect tends to be what you get. So if you're expecting things to be hard, slow, or pointless… they probably will be. But here's where this conversation gets interesting. Stephen doesn't suggest “faking” positivity. He actually recommends the opposite. Step 1: Stop Resisting Your Mood When you're stuck in a low state—feeling anxious, apathetic, overwhelmed—the worst thing you can do is pretend you're not. Instead, lean in. “I'll play piano in apathy,” Stephen says. “I'll let myself feel lazy. I'll turn up the volume on the feeling until I get bored of it. That's when the momentum shifts.” When you stop resisting how you feel and start actively creating it, you take back control. It's no longer happening to you. You're the one creating it. That awareness is where movement begins. Step 2: Ask the Question That Changes Everything Once you've moved through the feeling—not skipped over it—there's a simple question Stephen recommends to create forward momentum: “What can I do for you?” Not just you, the person in front of you. But you in the broadest sense: the audience, the community, the world. This question flips your attention from inward to outward. It connects you to purpose. It anchors you in service. And for artists, that's everything. Because the role of the artist, as Stephen beautifully puts it, is not to collapse into the emptiness of life—but to provide the antidote. The Trap of Creative Victimhood So many creatives are unconsciously stuck in a victim mindset. Waiting for permission. Hoping to be chosen. Scared to make the wrong move. But as Stephen says, the longer you wait, the more you stall. And stalling, while it may feel passive, often comes with a payoff: you don't have to take responsibility. That's the truth most people don't want to hear. But the moment you reclaim that responsibility—without shame or blame—you begin to unlock the creative momentum you've been craving. Final Thought: You Don't Have to Wait The most successful creatives aren't necessarily the most talented. They're the ones who know how to take action even when things aren't perfect. They've learned to choose positivity without needing to feel it first. They know how to get out of their heads and back into service. Stephen's message is simple, but profound: “You don't have to find momentum. You can create it. And it starts with one decision.” Want to Practice This Work? If you're ready to rebuild your creative momentum in a grounded, supportive space, I invite you to try a free class of The Weekly Adjustment—my coaching group for actors and artists working on confidence, mindset, and meaningful progress.

In this interview, Lord Ridley examines the pervasive pessimism shaping climate narratives within the media and academia. He addresses the transformative power of affordable energy for developing nations and warns against beliefs about energy and climate that ignore the needs of those in poverty.Ridley also criticises the politicisation of science in both climate and Covid modelling, arguing it distorts evidence, suppresses debate, and drives harmful policies that undermine economic and social progress. He urges a shift towards optimism driven by innovation and evidence, advocating for rational energy policies and transparent scientific inquiry to foster prosperity and address global challenges effectively.Lord Matthew Ridley is a British science writer, journalist, and hereditary peer with a background in zoology and a distinguished career spanning academia, business, and public service. He holds a DPhil from Oxford University and is best known for his best-selling books on science, economics, and human progress, including The Rational Optimist, Genome, and How Innovation Works. Ridley served as chairman of the UK-based bank Northern Rock and was a member of the House of Lords from 2013 to 2021, where he contributed to debates on science, technology, and innovation policy. This interview was filmed at ARC London 2025.

Stephen Ridley comes from a small village in South Yorkshire, England, with a population of just 40 people. He began playing the piano at the tender age of two. Following the death of his father when he was a teenager, his family was plunged into deep poverty, a circumstance that profoundly shaped his drive. Despite these challenges, he excelled academically, graduating from Durham University with a triple first-class honors degree in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics. This led to a prestigious and financially rewarding job at a world-renowned investment bank. However, the security of his banking career came at a great personal cost, leaving him feeling numb and miserable. In a defining moment of clarity, he walked out of his job for good. Just 30 minutes later, he bought a £100 piano from a thrift store, pulled it onto a London street, and began to play. The spontaneous performance drew smiling crowds, and for the first time in years, he felt a sense of joy and purpose. This single act of rebellion launched an incredible international music career. Ridley went from playing on the street to performing in over 60 countries. His unique journey has seen him play for world leaders, at exclusive events like the Monaco Grand Prix, and alongside A-list artists on superyachts and in palaces. He has also shared his music in children's hospitals, orphanages, and shanty towns, and performed at the largest outdoor concert in Uzbekistan's history. Beyond his live performances, Stephen is passionate about making music accessible to everyone. He founded an online piano academy to help students worldwide experience the power and joy of music. Translating his passion into a thriving enterprise, his courses have generated over $60 million in sales, empowering countless others to find their own connection to the piano. When Barbara Walters joined ABC news in 1976, she became the highest paid journalist in the U.S. – pulling in $1 million a year. That, not surprisingly, triggered a lot of resentment among her peers, none more so than her evening news co-anchor Harry Reasoner. Overcoming envy and sexism and balancing a career and motherhood, Walters reached the pinnacle of her profession and stayed there, a story explored in the new documentary Barbara Walters: Tell Me Everything. The film directed by Jackie Jesko premieres Thursday evening at Tribeca Festival in New York. The feature, which debuts on Hulu later this month, is the latest from Imagine Documentaries, the enormously successful nonfiction division of the production company founded by Ron Howard and Brian Grazer. On the latest edition of Deadline's Doc Talk podcast, we explore the company's upcoming docs and impressive slate of Emmy contenders with Imagine Entertainment President Justin Wilkes and Imagine Documentaries President Sara Bernstein. Taking their cue from the Barbara Walters documentary subtitle – Tell Me Everything – Wilkes and Bernstein tell us everything: why Imagine got into documentaries, how the Barbara Walters project came about, how they work with estates and other stakeholders on celebrity biographies without surrendering editorial independence, and what they see as the future of branded content in the nonfiction and fiction spaces. Imagine Documentaries won five Emmys last year for its film Jim Henson Idea Man, directed by Ron Howard. While the Television Academy has proven receptive to honoring documentaries about well-known people, the documentary branch of the Motion Picture Academy has demonstrated reluctance to do likewise. Wilkes shares his unvarnished thoughts about how the Academy could change voting rules to give celebrity-oriented documentaries a fair shake. The Imagine execs also respond to a recent article in the Hollywood trade papers asserting that music and other celebrity films are “killing the documentary.” They don't see it that way. That's on the latest edition of the Doc Talk podcast, hosted by Oscar winner John Ridley (12 Years a Slave, Shirley) and Matt Carey, Deadline's documentary editor. Another glamorous Cannes Film Festival has ended, after an exciting fortnight on the Côte d'Azur that drew the likes of Tom Cruise, Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Stone, Scarlett Johansson, Robert Pattinson, Denzel Washington, Paul Mescal, Kristen Stewart, and many others. Stars of documentaries also turned up: Shia LaBeouf, whose exploits as founder of a free theater company in L.A. are chronicled in Slauson Rec, and Julian Assange, focus of the documentary The Six Billion Dollar Man. The latter film, directed by Eugene Jarecki, won a Special Jury Prize marking the 10th anniversary of the L'Oeil d'or award, which goes to the top documentary at Cannes. Imago, directed by Chechen filmmaker Déni Oumar Pitsaev, took the 2025 L'Oeil d'or prize. For the first time, Deadline's Doc Talk podcast traveled to Cannes to record interviews and to moderate a panel at the American Pavilion. Today's episode of the show is built around our AmPav discussion on the state of the documentary industry which featured panelists Vanessa Hope (director of Invisible Nation); Joe Tufano, VP of Distribution at Submarine Entertainment, and Catherine Quantschnigg, Producer, Sales at Noah Media Group. Tufano explains how documentary filmmakers are increasingly moving to a territory-by-territory approach to sell their features in the absence of acquisitions for worldwide distribution. Hope tells us why she considered going the self-distribution route in the U.S. for her award-winning film that explores Taiwan as it contends with almost daily threats from mainland China. We're continuing on our human-men phase with All the Missing Pieces by Catherine Cowles. Ridley is a true crime podcaster who has actually broken cases open, allowing victims and their families to find justice. But there's one case that's always eluded her–the one that started it all for her. And she's put enough pieces together to know it wasn't an isolated incident. When she shows up in a tiny mountain town to investigate, she runs into a whole lot of brick walls–including the hot sheriff.Up Next: Wild Side by Elsie SilverSOS Novella: Nimbus by Nicole ParkerWhat else we're reading:The X-List by Evie MitchellFire Line by Maggie GatesMeet Me Over the Bridge by Veronica WynneSHOW INFORMATION: Join the DiscordFollow us on Spotify! Great Barrier Reef bleaching is accelerating at a dangerous pace, and yet, hope rises from a unique blend of technology, data, and collective action. In this powerful episode, Andrew talks to Andy Ridley, the founding CEO of Citizens of the Reef, about how they are building one of the most ambitious citizen science movements on the planet. They discuss how climate change rapidly degrades one of the world's natural wonders and how empowering ordinary people to contribute data can shift the tide toward reef recovery. Citizen science plays a key role in understanding reef health on a massive scale—especially when the area is as vast as the U.S. West Coast. Andy Ridley shares how his organization merges real-time data collection, AI, and local participation to inform reef management and climate resilience. If you've ever wondered how tech, policy, and everyday action can converge to protect the ocean, this episode is a must-listen. Ridley Scott's Legend had its 40th anniversary recently. To celebrate we decided to do a two part review. Joe and Johanna return to talk about the US theatrical cut of the film. If you grew up in the 80s or watched it on cable in the 90s this is probably the version you remember. Its also nowhere near as good as the director's cut. What went wrong? Watch and find out. Then subscribe to Movie Dumpster so you don't miss our review of the director's cut!

This week we review Death of a Unicorn! Stay tuned to find out whether the laughs are real or mythological. Synopsis Paul Rudd plays the hapless single father Elliot to Jenna Ortega's, art history student Ridley. They both go on a work trip to a remote estate of Elliot's boss in a former wilderness preserve. While on driving there, they accidentally collide with a horse beast with a horn protruding out of it's head. Just a single horn. Like a uni-horn. When they try to hide the evidence from the CEO and his family, wacky low jinks ensue. Review of Death of a Unicorn While this film has an interesting premise and a good cast, the words that kept playing through my mind while watching this is “half baked”. Not like the wacky movie staring Jim Bruer and Dave Chappell, but more like a mouthful of hot brownie batter. It sounds good, but is actually disappointing. While there were a few situations in which I did laugh, they were few and far between, because what this horror comedy lacked most was jokes and bits. The characters were all 2 dimensional, which in a comedy can be counteracted with broad caricature, but the writing here attempts to be subtle and low key with poor results. In fact, Paul Rudd's character, ostensibly the second protagonist ends up being so wishy washy, that I was confused if he was supposed to be one of the villains. Jenna Ortega isn't as stone faced as usual, but she doesn't have much to work with here. In fact most of her dialogue felt like it must have read [fill in later]. Probably the most successfully subtle character is Anthony Carrigan's Griff the butler. There were some good gory death moments. The expected impalements are here. There are some good headsplosions. But it's not enough. I usually think it's a cop out to say a movie's CGI is bad, but for a movie dependent on monster design, they should have spent a little more time and money dialing in the unicorns. Score 4/10
In all animals, mating is a deal. But few creatures behave as if sex is a simple, even mutually beneficial, transaction. Many more treat it with reverence, suspicion, angst, and violence. Matt Ridley revisits Darwin's revelatory theory of mate choice through the close study of the peculiar rituals of birds, and considers how this mating process complicates our own view of human evolution. Ridley also explores the scientific research into the evolution of bright colors, exotic ornaments, and elaborate displays in birds around the world. Charles Darwin thought the purpose of such displays was to “charm” females. Though Darwin's theory was initially dismissed and buried for decades, recent scientific research has proven him newly right—there is a powerful evolutionary force quite distinct from natural selection: mate choice. In Birds, Sex and Beauty, Ridley reopens the history of Darwin's vexed theory, laying bare a century of disagreement about an idea so powerful, so weird, and so wonderful, we may have yet to fully understand its implications. Matt Ridley is the bestselling author of The Rational Optimist and Viral: The Search for the Origin of COVID-19 (with Alina Chan). His books have sold over a million copies. Ridley served in the House of Lords from 2013 to 2021 and is a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, the Academy of Medical Sciences, and an honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. His latest book is Birds, Sex and Beauty: The Extraordinary Implications of Charles Darwin's Strangest Idea.
