MC LIVE Interview with Jake Ridley by Ralph Barba
Kathleen MarshallKathleen began her Broadway career as an assistant to her brother Rob, the choreographer of Kiss of the Spider Woman, in 1993. The two also collaborated on She Loves Me, Damn Yankees , Victor/Victoria and Seussical. She was the artistic director for the Encores! series of staged musical revivals from 1996 through 2000. During that time, she choreographed The Boys from Syracuse, Li'l Abner and Call Me Madam and she directed and choreographed Babes in Arms and Wonderful Town. She also directed and choreographed the Broadway revival of Grease. I was fortunate enough to catch the Encores! production of Wonderful Town when it transferred to Broadway.Kathleen was also the director and choreographer of the Broadway revival of Pajama Game which opened in February 2006 and which was the Broadway acting debut of Harry Connick Jr. I'm happy to report I was there too!More pertinent, Kathleen directed and choreographed a Broadway revival of Cole Porter's Anything Goes in 2011, with Sutton Foster as Reno Sweeney. The show ran at London's Barbican Centre in 2021 and was recorded for television (BBC) by Ross MacGibbon, later picked up by PBS in America. Kathleen's production is as close to perfect as can be. In fact, she won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Theatre Choreographer. Stephen RidleyIn 2021 Steve joined Kathleen as music supervisor and music director of Anything Goes at the Barbican. He was also music supervisor of Oklahoma! at Wyndham's Theatre. Steve conducted the highly-acclaimed Broadway transfers of The King and I at The London Palladium and the Dominion Theatre and An American in Paris at the Dominion Theatre, and he was the music director of the Olivier Award winning revival of Ken Ludwig's Crazy for You at the Novello Theatre. He later was music supervisor of Kiss me, Kate at the Barbican, now being shown on PBS throughout the U.S.Steve is a music director, conductor and pianist based in London. He was born in Middlesbrough and is a graduate of the Royal College of Music. I'm thrilled that he joined us for this exciting episode!

We're continuing on our human-men phase with All the Missing Pieces by Catherine Cowles. Ridley is a true crime podcaster who has actually broken cases open, allowing victims and their families to find justice. But there's one case that's always eluded her–the one that started it all for her. And she's put enough pieces together to know it wasn't an isolated incident. When she shows up in a tiny mountain town to investigate, she runs into a whole lot of brick walls–including the hot sheriff.Up Next: Wild Side by Elsie SilverSOS Novella: Nimbus by Nicole ParkerWhat else we're reading:The X-List by Evie MitchellFire Line by Maggie GatesMeet Me Over the Bridge by Veronica WynneSHOW INFORMATION: Join the DiscordFollow us on Spotify! Great Barrier Reef bleaching is accelerating at a dangerous pace, and yet, hope rises from a unique blend of technology, data, and collective action. In this powerful episode, Andrew talks to Andy Ridley, the founding CEO of Citizens of the Reef, about how they are building one of the most ambitious citizen science movements on the planet. They discuss how climate change rapidly degrades one of the world's natural wonders and how empowering ordinary people to contribute data can shift the tide toward reef recovery. Citizen science plays a key role in understanding reef health on a massive scale—especially when the area is as vast as the U.S. West Coast. Andy Ridley shares how his organization merges real-time data collection, AI, and local participation to inform reef management and climate resilience. If you've ever wondered how tech, policy, and everyday action can converge to protect the ocean, this episode is a must-listen. Twenty years ago, Sir Ridley Scott (Gladiator, Napoleon, 1492, Black Hawk Down) directed yet another large-scale historical drama.....this time taking place during the Crusades as we watch war escalate between the Saracins and Christian armies sent over from Europe. And apparently no one really cared. :( The film received middling reviews and box office upon release. However following in the tradition of another maligned, often misunderstood genre epic which he directed back in the 1980's - Blade Runner - Ridley Scott arranged to have HIS own personal extended director's cut released to DVD, including at least forty minutes of extra footage. The reaction was not only universally postiive but THIS version (which Ridley insists is the COMPLETE version of the story he was trying to tell) is now looked upon by many as one of his masterpieces. It also features a stacked international cast including Orlando Bloom, Eva Green, Jeremy Irons, David Thewlis, Marton Csokas, Brendan Gleeson, and Alexander Siddig. Let's head back to the 12th Century Jerusalem to explore this epic tale!Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

The conversation shifts to Tucson, highlighting its appeal as a cycling destination, before critiquing a new Ridley drop bar mountain bike, emphasizing the need for better design and components. Takeaways Scott had a strong start but faced challenges during the race. Travel issues can significantly impact an athlete's performance. Injuries often overshadow other aspects of an athlete's life. The hosts share a light-hearted banter about cycling and personal lives. Scott's experience highlights the unpredictability of racing conditions. The conversation reveals the emotional toll of competitive cycling. Viewership of cycling events varies greatly between disciplines. The hosts express their differing levels of enthusiasm for bike racing. Scott's personal life is intertwined with his cycling career. The discussion reflects on the popularity of cycling events and their accessibility. GCN's Perry Roubaix highlights show significant viewer engagement. Race highlights are crucial for audience understanding of events. Formula One's excitement is often overshadowed by its complexity. MotoGP offers a more dynamic racing experience than Formula One. Motocross can be chaotic and hard to follow live. E3 race highlights provide insights into upcoming classics. Pogacar's participation in Roubaix is a significant development. Tire choices can greatly affect performance in races like Roubaix. Riders often have to balance tire width for cobbles and pavement. The anticipation of racing on cobbles adds to the excitement. Mental health is an important topic that can be unpacked in conversations. Cycling predictions often lead to friendly debates among enthusiasts. Naming trends can reflect personal stories and cultural influences. Adoption allows for name changes, but it's a sensitive topic. Experiences with natural disasters can bring communities together. April Fool's Day can lead to playful banter among friends. Casual conversations can reveal deeper insights about life and relationships. Personal anecdotes can make discussions more relatable and engaging. The importance of trust in one's work is highlighted in humorous exchanges. Celebrating birthdays can lead to unexpected connections and shared experiences. Choosing the right cycling shoes is crucial for performance. Laces can be a disadvantage during races due to loosening. Gravel-specific shoes are often seen as a marketing gimmick. Cyclocross shoes are designed for running and cycling. Personal comfort varies greatly among different shoe brands. Finding the right fit is a challenge in the cycling shoe market. Insoles can help alleviate hotspots in shoes. Many cyclists stick to familiar brands and models. Testing shoes before buying is a significant gap in the market. Innovative designs can enhance comfort and performance in cycling shoes. Mavix is still a company, despite rumors of its closure. Lace shoes are preferred for aerodynamics, but have disadvantages. Velcro shoes are underrated for their speed and convenience. Oral hygiene is crucial for cyclists who consume sugar during rides. Cyclists should separate sugar intake on and off the bike for better health. Post-race recovery drinks like Fanta may taste better but aren't the best choice. Hydration practices in the sauna can impact performance and recovery. Maximizing heat acclimation may not be worth the risk of dehydration. Tires are the most critical component for performance in gravel racing. Understanding the role of hubs can help improve cycling performance. Investing in tires is more beneficial than hubs. The performance difference in hubs is marginal compared to tires. Cycling culture often intertwines with humor and beer. Tucson is recognized as a great place for cycling. The new Ridley bike lacks proper design for serious cycling. A production drop bar mountain bike should be purpose-built. Old inventory can lead to questionable bike builds. Cyclists often experiment with different tires for races. The conversation reflects a mix of technical and cultural insights. The hosts share personal experiences related to cycling events. This week we review Death of a Unicorn! Stay tuned to find out whether the laughs are real or mythological. Synopsis Paul Rudd plays the hapless single father Elliot to Jenna Ortega's, art history student Ridley. They both go on a work trip to a remote estate of Elliot's boss in a former wilderness preserve. While on driving there, they accidentally collide with a horse beast with a horn protruding out of it's head. Just a single horn. Like a uni-horn. When they try to hide the evidence from the CEO and his family, wacky low jinks ensue. Review of Death of a Unicorn While this film has an interesting premise and a good cast, the words that kept playing through my mind while watching this is “half baked”. Not like the wacky movie staring Jim Bruer and Dave Chappell, but more like a mouthful of hot brownie batter. It sounds good, but is actually disappointing. While there were a few situations in which I did laugh, they were few and far between, because what this horror comedy lacked most was jokes and bits. The characters were all 2 dimensional, which in a comedy can be counteracted with broad caricature, but the writing here attempts to be subtle and low key with poor results. In fact, Paul Rudd's character, ostensibly the second protagonist ends up being so wishy washy, that I was confused if he was supposed to be one of the villains. Jenna Ortega isn't as stone faced as usual, but she doesn't have much to work with here. In fact most of her dialogue felt like it must have read [fill in later]. Probably the most successfully subtle character is Anthony Carrigan's Griff the butler. There were some good gory death moments. The expected impalements are here. There are some good headsplosions. But it's not enough. I usually think it's a cop out to say a movie's CGI is bad, but for a movie dependent on monster design, they should have spent a little more time and money dialing in the unicorns. Score 4/10

In all animals, mating is a deal. But few creatures behave as if sex is a simple, even mutually beneficial, transaction. Many more treat it with reverence, suspicion, angst, and violence. Matt Ridley revisits Darwin's revelatory theory of mate choice through the close study of the peculiar rituals of birds, and considers how this mating process complicates our own view of human evolution. Ridley also explores the scientific research into the evolution of bright colors, exotic ornaments, and elaborate displays in birds around the world. Charles Darwin thought the purpose of such displays was to “charm” females. Though Darwin's theory was initially dismissed and buried for decades, recent scientific research has proven him newly right—there is a powerful evolutionary force quite distinct from natural selection: mate choice. In Birds, Sex and Beauty, Ridley reopens the history of Darwin's vexed theory, laying bare a century of disagreement about an idea so powerful, so weird, and so wonderful, we may have yet to fully understand its implications. Matt Ridley is the bestselling author of The Rational Optimist and Viral: The Search for the Origin of COVID-19 (with Alina Chan). His books have sold over a million copies. Ridley served in the House of Lords from 2013 to 2021 and is a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, the Academy of Medical Sciences, and an honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. His latest book is Birds, Sex and Beauty: The Extraordinary Implications of Charles Darwin's Strangest Idea.

It falls to an ex-soldier turned window cleaner, played by Ridley, suspended 50 stories up on the outside of the building, to save those trapped inside, including her younger brother. In this interview, we talk about his experience directing the James Bond films, his new film CLEANER, the evolution of villains in film, working with Jackie Chan on THE FOREIGNER, and much more.
