Surely Henry V can't like what he's about to do, but he knows enough about what cruelty can deliver. It's 1418 and his forces have been instructed to lay siege to Normandy's glittering capital, Rouen. If he takes this city, Henry places himself in prime position to take the French crown. With this stakes this high, Rouen's starved and desperate citizens call for help from Paris. It falls on deaf ears. To hear about the last time an English monarch invaded France, listen back to The Battle of Crecy in season 6. Outnumbered. Exhausted. Unyielding. Fresh from the brutal siege of Harfleur, King Henry V marches his exhausted, disease-ridden army across hostile French territory—toward Azincourt, and into the jaws of disaster. Outnumbered, starving, and surrounded, the English face a vast French force confident of crushing them. But Henry is no ordinary king. With icy resolve and tactical brilliance, he prepares for a showdown that will defy the odds. What follows is the legendary Battle of Agincourt: a thunderous clash of steel, mud, and willpower that rewrites the rules of medieval warfare. This is the story of one of history's most astonishing military victories—and the king who dared to risk it all. For more This Is History on Agincourt, listen back to The Battle of Crecy in season 6, or hear about the French experience of Agincourt in episode 4 of our miniseries, The Glass King. When the newly crowned King Henry V receives a mocking gift from the French Dauphin — a box of tennis balls — he doesn't laugh. He retaliates with cannonballs and a thunderous claim to the French throne. What begins as a petty insult escalates into a seismic clash of empires. From the opulent courts of Paris to the blood-soaked fields of Agincourt, this episode unpacks the moment England's young king turned humiliation into history — and launched a war that would shake Europe to its core. For more context behind this episode's history, listen back to The Battle of Crecy in season 6, or hear about the French version of the tennis ball story in episode 3 of our miniseries, The Glass King.
Philipstown gardener has '10 green fingers' What happens to a legendary garden when the legendary gardener who loved it for six decades moves away? That's the question on the minds of the Highlands gardening community as Miriam Wagner leaves her beloved home on Old Albany Post Road in Philipstown, where she cultivated a 1-acre plot that is listed in the Archive of American Gardens of the Smithsonian Institution. "'The Goddess Flora' - that's what I call Miriam," said Matthew Weigman, honorary president of the Philipstown Garden Club. "Talk about green thumbs. She has 10 green fingers." Since the early 1960s, when Miriam and her husband, Eric, moved into the renovated 19th-century barn, those green fingers have cultivated a meandering country garden surrounded by a 7-foot-high fence to keep out the deer. Wagner has grown hundreds of plants, shrubs, trees and flowers, including hydrangea, forsythia, Petasites, joe-pye weed, daylilies, grapevines, a dogwood tree, a lady apple tree, fruiting and ornamental quince, spirea, azaleas and flowering lettuce. "I'm greedy for beautiful things," said Wagner, 87, who has a degree in art history from Barnard. During her studies, she especially liked artists who filled their paintings with flowers. "Renaissance artists were good at putting Madonna and child with lovely blooming plants," she says. When the Philipstown Garden Club applied for the Smithsonian listing, Wagner suggested the garden be named Linnevold, her maiden name, but it's never been called that outside of the application. In the late spring and early summer, the stars of her garden are the antique roses with names such as Belle de Crecy, Duchesse de Montebello, Maiden's Blush and Madame Plantier. To celebrate those roses, every June for 40 years Wagner invited as many as 60 friends and plant lovers to a garden party to celebrate "Rose Day." They would sip May wine and eat pound cake with butter frosting blended with rose water and topped with rose petals, which are "perfectly healthy to eat provided you don't spray anything on your roses," Wagner said. "I never use sprays, ever." This summer, for the first time in recent memory, there was no Rose Day celebration. Eric Wagner died three years ago, and late last year, Miriam decided to move to The Fellowship Community in Chestnut Ridge. "It is hard, but I didn't want to live here alone anymore," said Wagner, speaking last weekend at her estate sale, where she sold, among other items, many of her gardening books. "This is me trying to make a good place for me to be healthy." While moving was necessary, her family didn't relish the possibility of having a new owner bulldoze the old house, greenhouse and garden. "I wanted it to be in gardening hands," she said. As it happens, the property was purchased by the family of a Garrison resident and contractor, Javier Flores (yes, flores translates as flowers in Spanish), who had done work on the house over the years and expressed interest in buying it if the opportunity arose. Flores' wife, Janeth Martinez, said their family plans to move in after completing renovations in a few months. "The garden will stay because my daughter loves to garden," said Martinez, whose two children attend the Garrison School. Martinez and her mother, who lives near Corpus Christi, Texas, have long grown vegetables, including zucchini, tomatoes, cilantro, pumpkins, parsley and butternut squash. Martinez plans to bring along her five chickens once her husband builds a coop, a necessity since she's had problems with bobcats. She said she is not intimidated by the wide variety of plants to maintain. "I can learn," she said. "Everything is online. I can take a photo of the plant and read about it." Of course, she hopes to rely on Wagner for guidance, as well. Wagner's advice is simple. "Love the garden," she said. "Make it grow as well as you can." The family knows that the garden will change. "Gardens are always evolving," said her daughter, Liz Wagner, an e...
The noble and gallant King of Bohemia, also known as John of Luxemburg because he was the son of the Emperor Henry of Luxemburg, was told by his people that the battle had begun. Although he was in full armour and equipped for combat, he could see nothing because he was blind. He asked his knights what the situation was and they described the rout of the Genoese and the confusion which followed King Philip's order to kill them. Ha,' replied the King of Bohemia. 'That is a signal for us.' […] 'My lords, you are my men, my friends and my companions-in-arms. Today I have a special request to make of you. Take me far enough forward for me to strike a blow with my sword.Because they cherished his honor and their own prowess, his knights consented. [..] In order to acquit themselves well and not lose the King in the press, they tied all their horses together by the bridles, set their king in front so that he might fulfil his wish, and rode towards the enemy. There also was Lord Charles of Bohemia, who bore the title and arms of King of Germany, and who brought his men in good order to the battlefield. But when he saw that things were going badly for his side, he turned and left. I do not know which way he went. Not so the good King his father, for he came so close to the enemy that he was able to use his sword several times and fought most bravely, as did the knights with him. They advanced so far forward that they all remained on the field, not one escaping alive. They were found the next day lying round their leader, with their horses still fastened together. "Anyone with even a passing interest in late medieval history will remember this scene from Froissart's description of the Battle of Crecy on August 26th, 1346. The Blind King of Bohemia, the epitome of chivalric culture riding into the midst of a battle striking at an enemy he cannot see, relying on his comrades to guide him. This deed made such an impression on the Edward, the Prince of Wales, known as the Black Prince that he honored his foe by adding the Bohemian ostrich feathers and the dead king's motto “Ich Dien”, to his own coat of arms. So to this day the Blind King's heraldic symbols and German motto features on Prince William's coat of arms, the Welsh Rugby Union Badge, some older 2p coins and various regiments in Britain, Australia, Canada and even Sri Lanka. But this death, call it heroic or foolish, was only the end of an astounding life. John Of Bohemia, very much against his own intentions, played a crucial role in the establishment of the key counterweight to French hegemony in Europe. No, not England, but a power centered on Prague, Vienna, Buda and Pest.Let's dive into this story…The music for the show is Flute Sonata in E-flat major, H.545 by Carl Phillip Emmanuel Bach (or some claim it as BWV 1031 Johann Sebastian Bach) performed and arranged by Michel Rondeau under Common Creative Licence 3.0.As always:Homepage with maps, photos, transcripts and blog: www.historyofthegermans.comFacebook: @HOTGPod Twitter: @germanshistoryInstagram: history_of_the_germansReddit: u/historyofthegermansPatreon:

Back to the roots pourrait-on dire, retour aux sources avec des sons comme « Am I Wrong »

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Hundred Years war did not arise from a vacuum. The 12th and 13th centuries had seen near constant conflict between the English and French Crowns. As both kingdoms began to grow stronger and richer the wars between the two would also grow in intensity. In 1337 tensions boiled over yet again and war was declared. Brutal raids devastated the French countryside, disastrous battles loomed destroyed armies, and the Plague brought death even to regions untouched by violence. The 14th Century saw France hit by catastrophe and calamity, but as France was on the decline, Valois Burgundy was about to get started. Time Period Covered: 1152-1356 Notable People: King Philip II, Henry Plantagenet, Eleanor of Aquitaine, King Philip VI, King John the Good, King Edward III, Charles the Bad, The Black Prince Notable Events/Developments: Angevin Empire, Battle of Bouvines, The Hundred Years War, Battle of Sluis, Battle of Crecy, The Black Death Check out the History of Persia Podcast! Ilaria Gaspari prova a spiegarci perché. France 1346: The army of King Philip VI is Europe's pre-eminent killing machine. It's accustomed to crushing any force stupid enough to oppose it, and now fully expects to annihilate a motley band of English invaders in a field near the village of Crecy. Except as night falls, it is Philip's army that lies broken and bleeding in the mud. What went wrong? The French knights, it seems, had failed to update their corporate culture. Join my Supporter's ClubIt was the feast of John the Baptist - 24th June 1348.The busy little port of Melcombe Regis sits on the north side of Weymouth Harbour in Dorset. It had only received its charter 80 years before hand but in that time it had established itself as a busy port in this part of the south west of England. That day boats were arriving from France, bringing back soldiers who had been engaged in King Edward III's Hundred Years War. Some of these men were possibly veterans who had stood and fought alongside the king at his incredible victory over the French at Crecy, two years before.Other ships were arriving from the Mediterranean, having crossed the stormy Bay of Biscay. On board they had imports from Italy and exotic spices from further afield - the moorish cities of Spain and north Africa and far away Constantinople, capital of the Byzantine Empire and largest city in Christendom.Through the hubbub of noise, men shouting, cursing and laughing in many tongues, the panting & puffing as cargos were unloaded and the raucous noise from a nearby tavern you can imagine a priest pushing his way past people toward the church, whose bell was tolling on this religious feast day.As he nears the stone church, he sees a man laying on the ground, shaking, maybe he has spent his wages on local ale.As it is a feast day and the priest is a kindly man, he kneels down to assist the stranger. The man has vomit down his clothes and his skin burns when the priest touches him.Taking a strip of cloth he soaks it in some water from a nearby barrel and then the priest dabs the sailor's forehead. Mopping his face, he pulls back the mans tunic and sees a large black lump on his neck and another under his armpit. He pulls back in horror…The Black Death had arrived in England. The Black Death was a name that later historians gave to the bubonic plague that swept through Europe in the middle of the 14th century. At the time was actually referred to as The Great Pestilence. The symptoms were initially fever, convulsions and vomiting but quickly the lymph glands (in the neck, the armpits or groin) swelled up into black lumps or “Buboes” - hence the term Bubonic plague.Highly contagious and highly deadly, it is estimated that 70% of people who caught it died.Originating in the far east (possibly China or Mongolia) , it had traveled along the silk roads to Europe, carried by black rats. Flees feeding on the infected rates transferred the plague to humans.Just over a year before it had been recorded in the Crimea and since then had swept across western Europe, carried by sailors returning from the trading ports at the end of the Silk RoadsAnd now, 24th June 1348 it had arrived in England.By the 15th August it was in Bristol.Panic struck townsfolk fleeing infection unwittingly transported the plague with them into the midlands and eastwards towards London. On the 1st November it finally reached the capital.By the 21st May the following year (1349) it had reached the northern city of York and swiftly crossed the border into Scotland. The plague knew no boundaries (it had arrived in Ireland just weeks after it had first appeared in England) and knew no class boundaries. The nobility were just as likely as serfs to be beaten by an infected flea.Three successive Archbishops of Canterbury died from the bubonic plague.Records indicate that 40% of priests died during the Black Death.Eventually, the Black Death ran its course in England and throughout Europe but only after killing anySupport the show
DJ Possum and Myles Mac return with a three hour trip full of saxy summer time slow jams, deep balearic burners, soulful UK garage and loungin' 90s house & hip hop. Mellow to its core, this one invites you to hit recline and see where the vibe might take you. One for the boom bappers and the chill steppers! Tracklist and full info: melbournedeepcast.net/portfolio/myles-mac-dj-possum A little bit about the mix.. @djpossums: Collaborating with Myles is fun because it's where we find a point of intersection with our djing styles and music tastes. I'm an unpinned DJ in terms of genre but together we find cohesiveness to tell a story that is reminiscent of our upbringings and nostalgic memories; UK Underground street soul, 90s Hip Hop, funny South African Kwaito tunes that we sing along to even though we don't know the language, soulful electronic love songs, early house classics and many more.. Some pretty banging songs that are precious to me from the message in the lyrics, the feeling they create, the fun vibes or just their awesome production are: Can't Stop (One World 12'' Mix) by After 7, U.N.I.T.Y. by Queen Latifah, Scratched by Etienne de Crecy and the Brazilian balearic classic Tudo Faz Sentido by Taciana to name a few. @myles-mac: One of the few upsides of extended periods at home this year thanks to all the lockdowns has been the time to trawl through old Ibiza chill CDs, youtube channel wormholes and bandcamp compilations to discover classic or relatively unknown 90s downtempo gems that have managed to last the test of time. With this mix, Maria and I put our heads together to tell a story of the past that somehow still sounds fresh to our ears today, trying to squeeze in a bunch of styles from both of our collections while making it all flow and sound somewhat cohesive over three hours and a variety of tempos. Inspirations for the mix come from all over the map, but there's a definite focus on the link between the UK and Ibiza in the early-mid 90s, with old Dj Alfredo live recordings, José Padilla's Café del Mar compilations, psychedelic mixes from the late great Andrew Weatherall, the absolutely insane discography of UK Street Soul pioneer Toyin Agbetu (the producer behind 2 Tuff, Deluxe, Shades Of Black, Robyn, Mary Pearce and many more), the crisp jazzy productions of downtempo master Paul Hardcastle from Kiss The Sky (a ton of which he's uploaded to bandcamp) and the don of deep & soulful UK Garage Mike Millrain (aka D Base, DJ South Central, Vibes Alive, Stone Cold Steppaz). A few special mentions go to our friend Dust-e-1 in Montreal for his chillout monster of a remix for Pascale Project, the late Richard H. Kirk aka Sandoz who recently passed but left us with an infinite resource of beautiful electronic dance music, and Alaska's Kwaito classic "Accuse" that will always put a smile on our faces no matter the occasion.

‘Beau and Carl chat about the Hundred Years War with specific reference to the Battle of Agincourt. This is the single greatest victory of the Hundred Years War. King Henry V besieges Harfleur, then tries to recreate Edward III's incredible Crecy campaign. Though all seems doomed and lost, war-like Harry serves up one last giant and glorious victory for the record books against all the odds.' Harding Crecy overcame the stereotypes of segregation to distinguish himself as a true hero in two wars. In the fog of battle, after losing a close comrade, he rose to the occasion and took matters into his own hands to save his fellow soldiers regardless of their skin color.

A classic "matched pair" of armies in this week's L'Art de la Guerre List Building Podcast from Madaxeman.com as I'm joined by regular guests Richard & Dave to run the rule over these two famous medieval behemoths. Will it be massed longbowmen who come out on top, or will the flower of French Chivalry (and Joan d'Arc) catch the list-makers eye as we delve deep into how to make these armies into not only Crecy-winners but proper world-beaters as well. There are 7 different lists going under the microsocope this week, all of which as usual can be found in the Madaxeman ADLG Wiki and also on the accompanying YouTube video which has plenty of pictures of figures as well. We also delve into the history around these armies at this pivotal point in the creation of both France and England. The game's afoot: Follow your spirit, and upon this charge Cry ‘God for Harry, England, and Saint George!' (King Henry, Act 3 Scene 1)
