Dervish is with Andrew Drury a journalist and film-maker with a passion for meeting, interviewing, and getting to the truth around events that have captured the attention of the world Over the last year, Andy has been the person Shamima Begum, the teenager from East London who travelled to Syria to join ISIS has been talking to, and he shares an insight into the person behind the headlines. He also talks to Dervish about some of his interviews and experiences from travelling the world and what its really like being in extreme situations with extreme individuals KEY TAKEAWAYS Shamima was radicalised at age thirteen I'm interviewing Assad the Syrian President next, it will be his first interview in seven years My new film ‘Danger Zone' is finished and will come out this year With the radicalisation of Shamima someone is responsible for it, at thirteen she was just a schoolgirl and the question is why did no one stop her? In my eyes, she's a victim herself The question is how do you become British? Shamima was born in England but her father is from Bangladesh so the question is how many generations does it take to prove you are British? We betrayed a whole nation and we don't care because we choose who we feel sorry for The number of people lost in the twin towers happens at least twice over every year in Somali Because it's a different race we don't understand we don't think or care about it When you travel to war zones and see the reality for people it's understandable that they want a better life for themselves and their children The girls in the camps are leaving and they are being repatriated There are British girls who have done deals with the Government to come back In Mogadishu, my bodyguard was blown up and killed I've been to places where suicide attacks have happened The Klu Klax Klan love to watch Downton Abbey BEST MOMENTS ‘The people who are in refugee camps are the people who can't afford to get out' ‘We say we aren't racist as a country but we are because we don't care if a race we don't recognise has a big loss' ‘Currently she is stateless and that's against her human rights' VALUABLE RESOURCES Full Throttle With Dervish podcast ABOUT THE HOST Dervish is a Spacecraft Designer and a Mechanical Engineer by day and podcaster by night. Dev is talking to Jack Brown all about recreational diving, how he got started, the training you need and the best dive sites around the world They discuss everything from the right technique to Jack's most memorable dives and animals he has seen when diving across the world This in-depth conversation is a great listen that gives a really helpful insight into what recreational diving is all about and could be what inspires you to have a go KEY TAKEAWAYS A rebreather means you can dive for longer When you are certified you can dive to a depth of 30 metres beyond this you need further specialised training Caves and places with strong currents make diving potentially more dangerous My ambition is to dive in Iceland between the tectonic plates in the Silfra fissure Being out completely in the blue is the bit I don't like as a diver There are some great dives to do around shipwrecks There are dive maps to show you where the best dives are around the world It's always worth talking to the locals about good dive sites You are not allowed to remove anything from a dive site Having a good profile in diving makes all the difference In diving, the kit is quite bulky when you are swimming and at the surface Shipwrecks are what's really interesting to me BEST MOMENTS ‘There are some really great wreck dives you can do' ‘Take nothing but memories and leave nothing except bubbles' VALUABLE RESOURCES Full Throttle With Dervish podcast ABOUT THE HOST Dervish is a Spacecraft Designer and a Mechanical Engineer by day and podcaster by night. Arash Farboud, CEO and Founder of the Arash Motor Company who design and build Hyper cars and Supercars including race cars and EV's talks with Dev about his love of sci-fi and space technology and how it has influenced his car designs and shares his favourite cars. They discuss how 3D printing can be the way forward and why being in control of your manufacturing process is vital in car production globally. This episode is an entertaining and informative conversation that has something for anyone who is interested in Hyper and Supercars KEY TAKEAWAYS We know we are going towards space technology We need to make producing everything as fast as possible and 3D printing is the way forward Who is going to get the gold on the moon? We need robots now not any more machines We manufacture as much as we can in this country and have solar panels on all of our factories Tax and energy is very skewed at the moment You need to be in a position to control the major points of manufacture Humans are about to enter a phase of understanding the importance of spending more money on saving the planet The only viable way forward is the colonisation of another planet You have to be wacky to do great things I never sell my cars I still have them all The car of my dreams, the ultimate car by a long way is the Porsche Carrera GT it can't be beaten It's a Porsche, it's got a screaming F1 engine in it, looks spectacular and it's an asset that will continue to grow in value BEST MOMENTS ‘I've always liked the technology in space' ‘My cars are all named after fax machines' ‘My first car was a mini metro that did 120mph and then I had a Golf GTI that changed my life' VALUABLE RESOURCES Full Throttle With Dervish podcast https://arashcars.com https://www.instagram.com/arashmotorcomp/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLDKmcAnpTYJwDQ-A9bciDA https://arashtechnologies.com/ https://arashspace.com/ ABOUT THE HOST Dervish is a Spacecraft Designer and a Mechanical Engineer by day and podcaster by night. Sam Moores is a photographer, podcaster, classic car collector and supercar owner who has owned some fascinating supercars including the famous blue Ferrari F40 which broke records when it was recently sold He talks with Dev about some of the amazing cars he has owned and discusses what makes a car valuable and why for him it's about buying cars that you like and enjoy. Listen in and hear this fascinating conversation about what makes a car interesting and why there are people out there who want something different KEY TAKEAWAYS I had my fun with the Ferrari F40 but it wasn't my forever car Cars that appreciate are those with low mileage, are in as original condition and have only had one owner There are now dedicated platforms for selling cars and selling my car this way was a good way to get the best return The Ferrari F40 is fun to drive in short bursts more than over long periods of time Ferrari produce beautiful cars that are masterpieces of art There are a lot of people out there who want something different I had my time, enjoyed it and made some memories You shouldn't really buy a car as an investment you should buy because it's something you like and it makes you happy I like driving and have done some wicked road trips to Sweden I've owned and sold a few cars that have made money It's about rarity and being interesting - it has to be kinda cool or have something about it I'm going to wait until I find something that is special for me I need a daily practical car – RS4, an electric car – the fiat 500 converted to electric because now in the city you really do need to have an electric car McLaren F1 GTR is my all-time favourite car and for something old a 65 Porsche short wheelbase BEST MOMENTS ‘Over time I've got more and more into cars' ‘It went for more than anyone thought it would because of the history and it had become a bit of a personality' ‘The most fun I've ever had on a road trip has been in the snow' VALUABLE RESOURCES Full Throttle With Dervish podcast https://linktr.ee/carchatpodcast https://www.sammoores.com https://www.instagram.com/sammooresphoto/?hl=en https://twitter.com/sammooresphoto?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/car-chat/id1432553826 https://www.youtube.com/c/sammooresphoto/videos ABOUT THE HOST Dervish is a Spacecraft Designer and a Mechanical Engineer by day and podcaster by night. Film and documentary maker and war journalist Andrew Drury who is best known for his documentary interview with Shamima Begum talks to Dervish about how he followed his passion and shares some of his experiences from across the world in this fascinating episode He discusses the importance of reporting the truth in any story and why getting the truth out to the wider world is so important along with how he got started through adventure tourism this is a great listen that confronts some of the challenges faced by people across the globe and the value in hearing the truth. KEY TAKEAWAYS For me interviewing Shamima was a scoop because I've only been working as a journalist for the last couple of years My passion for adventure tourism started about twenty-five years ago I love a story and I spent time with a sniper who shared his story I have brought back stories that people need to hear about For me, podcasts are another way of getting the truth out there. It's for Shamima's story and the truth to be told I believe there are lots of people who need to come back but I told her I believe she should go to prison if she comes back here She became a terrorist when she married someone who was a member of ISIS She was a normal teenager but then she changed When you are there you can't just leave it doesn't work like that I've seen atrocities all over the world and have spoken to people who were forced to watch beheadings by ISIS The system in this country failed Shamima, people should have noticed if she was becoming radicalised I think they will have her back because she knows too much but she's not a threat There has to be a certain amount of humanity and compassion I love telling stories and It's about living a life that means something I don't want to leave this planet not having done anything BEST MOMENTS ‘I love documentaries and I want to live a documentary' ‘It's about following your passion' ‘Travelling is what changed my mindset about people' VALUABLE RESOURCES Full Throttle With Dervish podcast ABOUT THE HOST Dervish is a Spacecraft Designer and a Mechanical Engineer by day and podcaster by night. Listen in and find out more about some of the most iconic cars in the world and hear about some of Marc's and Dervish's more unusual car choices KEY TAKEAWAYS The 1969 Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale is said by many to be the prettiest car that's ever been designed The people who know, know this was the first real supercar and there are only fourteen in existence The Italian's, they know how to make cars It's an erratic, invigorating nightmare of a car to drive with everything you could possibly imagine that makes a car exciting involved I love the way the Lamborghini Sian Roadster looks with its mean and low, wide backend People say it looks like a space vehicle but if you buy one they fly it to wherever you are in the world The sixties Ford Bronco does it for me The dual clutch on some cars it just works I love that whole concept of we want to go racing but we need to build cars to sell They are a focused tool for racing People don't buy and sell those cars they are just inherited People buy those types of cars just to hunt trophies they are iconic designs for Concours events You couldn't say it's a good-looking car it was the last ‘hurrah' for Ferrari at the time The Porsche Singer has amazing attention to detail and is a real statement about the people who made it BEST MOMENTS ‘The Alfa Romeo 1969 Stradale - It is a stunning car' ‘It's a beast of a car' I want to build a car from the raw metal all the way up to the complete finished vehicle VALUABLE RESOURCES Full Throttle With Dervish podcast https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWo3kLE5S6cJsnKVJdxDVSg https://www.instagram.com/marcandcars/ ABOUT THE HOST Dervish is a Spacecraft Designer and a Mechanical Engineer by day and podcaster by night. Mark Sherriff of 'Marc and Cars' talks with Dervish about the cars that make his top twenty cars to own and why in this fascinating episode. As Marc and Dervish discuss the cars that make it onto their lists they explain the reasons why and share great information on particular models their availability and the current values. This is an entertaining listen that has something for anyone who is interested in cars and knowing more about them KEY TAKEAWAYS I spent over two years looking for the car I wanted You can construct your list of ‘Top Twenty Cars' in different ways The oldest car on my top twenty is a 1948 Porsche 356, the first generation of Porsche, the first cars they put their badges on and there are only 46 in existence I believe the purest sports cars can only be maintained by driving them However, you measure cars the focused engine of the Spider 550 means it's an exhilarating ride Like all German cars, form follows function creating beautiful cars If you are a BMW enthusiast there are really only four cars you will want to own After the war Mercedes and Porsche brought lots of Turkish people in to work in car building. A 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California short wheelbase is a Ferris Bueller's day off type of car I'm a fan of Ferrari because of what they do not what they build This is the ultimate cruising car and you could have a great time driving one The Porsche 904 is easily one of the prettiest cars Porsche have ever built The V600 is very focused in its outcomes and has been designed for a particular task and being on the road may not be the right place for that task Driving in Australia is more policed and spirited driving is better down on B roads You need to pick the right locations and plan properly BEST MOMENTS ‘We love aspirational cars' ‘I'd love to have the time to drive a 2CV to work' ‘I'm looking at the back end – very Kardashian' VALUABLE RESOURCES Full Throttle With Dervish podcast https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWo3kLE5S6cJsnKVJdxDVSg https://www.instagram.com/marcandcars/ ABOUT THE HOST Dervish is a Spacecraft Designer and a Mechanical Engineer by day and podcaster by night. They also chat about all things food including making the best biriyani curry this is a great listen but be ready because after this podcast you will be hungry! KEY TAKEAWAYS I have a passion for cooking and it's what excites me Being in a professional kitchen is an intensive experience Street food markets are popping up all over London but it can be really difficult to get a location With a mango tree, you can graft on branches from different varieties and end up with a single tree with over 300 different varieties of mangos Fermenting is an incredible world of flavours created using everyday ingredients like salt and koji With Koji, it's the fungus that kickstarts the starches and proteins in the rice with enzymes that then bring the flavour I'm working with other restaurants to incorporate these fermented products into their style of cooking I learnt about basic fermentation early on but have developed and extended my knowledge much further People who are experts are very happy to share their expertise and knowledge My style of food is very cross-cultural and is the cuisine of London inspired by all the different communities and the many places I have travelled across the world along with my Indian heritage It's all about the right ingredients and creating great flavours BEST MOMENTS ‘Using fermenting has resulted in a huge range of amazing flavours' ‘A lot of fermented products are good for gut health' ‘Spices have a range of different qualities that can help the body' VALUABLE RESOURCES Full Throttle With Dervish podcast https://www.instagram.com/thathungrychef/ https://www.thathungrychef.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/pratap-chahal-83974179/ ABOUT THE HOST Dervish is a Spacecraft Designer and a Mechanical Engineer by day and podcaster by night. Best-selling author, confidence coach and public speaker Dale Hancock talks to Dervish about coaching kids to warrior status and why there is no such thing as perfect parenting. Dale has spoken across the globe to over 80,000 people about the psychology of children and what we really need to be teaching them to develop self-belief and confidence and shares some of his experiences and invaluable advice in this inspiring episode. If you want to understand more about the building blocks needed to develop any child's confidence this is a great listen. KEY TAKEAWAYS As parents, you are learning all the time Everyone is different, we are all snowflakes because there is not a single person who is the same as someone else A child absorbs everything from you they will mimic the behaviours they see. The most important lesson in someone's life is self-belief and if you want a child to have self-belief they need to see it in their parent First, before they can develop it a child needs to know what self-belief is People should have their own definition of confidence; I get children to draw their confidence Children should have three confidence values that they live by every day. Use the 3 ‘A's – awareness, acceptance and action It's about helping yourself and helping others and growing as who you really are For your kids to be confident you have to be confident yourself There is no such thing as a wrong emotion and being put on the naughty step results in children learning not to express themselves When kids are young they have no control over their anger Every single kid is unique and special Creating disconnect, not spending time and putting your child first can all be parenting mistakes. Any relationship needs to be valued and achieving a balance between the different relationships in your life is key. My legacy is leaving an impact on the young people of the world BEST MOMENTS ‘Children are 100% our future and I want them to be powerful warriors' ‘It's strong to be vulnerable' ‘Be your own best friend and seek out your passion' VALUABLE RESOURCES Full Throttle With Dervish podcast https://www.instagram.com/dalevincentcoaching/ https://linktr.ee/dalevincentcoaching https://www.linkedin.com/in/dale-hancock-6250a373/ ABOUT THE HOST Dervish is a Spacecraft Designer and a Mechanical Engineer by day and podcaster by night. Mark Wilsmore from Ace Café talks to Dev about this unique and special venue and the excitement that surrounds it. They discuss the range of car meets that take place at the Café and how those with a common interest in cars like to get together and both talk and brag about their vehicles. As a venue, the Ace café hosts a number of different car and bike club meets every week and also organises track days and road trips. With a great mix of passionate owners, vehicles, live music and food the venue has experienced a great deal and Mark shares some of his experiences and discusses how things work at the Ace Café KEY TAKEAWAYS People love to brag about their cars and share them with other people It's a major operation to get everything ready to open again and we are looking forward to having everyone back again. Society is shaped by the largest demographic so what was acceptable years ago, racing around a track is no longer possible because of the laws around safety We manage our space according to laws but we work with other organisations to try and manage the space outside around us There was nothing between big commercial meets and race days and getting together in a pub car park We were the first to offer something that bridges the gap and meets the demand for people to be able to get together You can go and see cars, hear live music and eat at the Ace Café car meets We have everything from modified scooters through to Jenson Interceptors We do road trips to Southend, Brighton and Margate, usually in the spring and hope to do this again next year. There is a common interest in cars and people who are interested in cars want to get together There will be changes as things move forward and we expect to host more electric cars BEST MOMENTS ‘It's the entire spectrum of motors' ‘Incarnation for Cars is our annual road trip to Brighton' ‘People love to brag about their cars' VALUABLE RESOURCES Full Throttle With Dervish podcast https://london.acecafe.com https://www.instagram.com/acecafelondon_official/ https://www.facebook.com/acecafelondon ABOUT THE HOST Dervish is a Spacecraft Designer and a Mechanical Engineer by day and podcaster by night. How do we track them? How do we neutralise them and what can be done if one hits earth? Dev is with Professor Chris Welsh discussing the answers to the questions his listeners have been asking about asteroids. Asteroids are out there and as technology gets better we can see more of them and learn more about which ones are possible threats to earth. With developing forward knowledge it's more possible than ever to consider how to nudge asteroids and alter their orbit to ensure they don't hit the earth and Chris explains how this works along with other fascinating information about asteroids in this content-packed episode. KEY TAKEAWAYS There are a number of ways to track asteroids – optical telescopes radar, infrared but the challenge is they are very small and often difficult to detect. As technology develops we are able to see more and more asteroids and the question always is which ones are a threat to earth? Asteroids are material left over from the creation of the universe There are both very large asteroids and those as small as a grain of sand If you have enough forward knowledge you can take action to nudge the orbit of the asteroid If there was an approaching asteroid you would use a more dynamic approach but in splitting the asteroid you risk creating a problem with multiple pieces The solar system was originally a cloud of gas which then formed an accretion disc Over time the atoms came together to form the sun and the other planets in the solar system When the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs hit, a nuclear winter followed and only some animals survived The damage caused by an asteroid is dependent on its size There are lots of amateur astrologers around the world and it's an area where amateurs can still make significant contributions BEST MOMENTS ‘If we can just nudge an asteroid and change its orbit we can avert it from hitting the earth' ‘Things that survive the fall to earth are heavier things' ‘If an asteroid is big enough it can cause damage' VALUABLE RESOURCES Full Throttle With Dervish podcast https://www.linkedin.com/in/prof-chris-welch-6855121/ https://www.instagram.com/profchriswelch/ ABOUT THE GUEST Chris Welch is a Professor of Astronautics and Space Engineering at the International Space University in Strasbourg, France, where he is Head of the Space Payloads Laboratory and Director of master's Programs. KEY TAKEAWAYS I would love to see synthetic fuels in a V10 I don't think the way to go is electric Formula 1 shouldn't be going to electric ever The whole point of racing is people racing other people in machines The issue in formula 1 was that cars couldn't follow close behind each other and when the new regulations come in it will be a whole new car. Next year will be turning a new leaf and starting again when the regulations change With people who are car fans there is a shared interest whatever the area of cars they are interested in. The Volvo is an incredibly comfortable car with great safety. The Polestar is an incredible car to look at and Volvo have worked hard to use adhesives that do not have any smell. Polestar was originally the tuning company for Volvo Polestar is the electric stand-alone brand for Volvo Cars are meant to be driven, they have mechanical parts and are designed to get us from A to B. Governments are pushing for electric cars but the reality is much more challenging Driving in London is becoming a real issue because they don't want you to be there. Dervish is chatting with Bradley Phillips from Hagerty Media where he is Director of Business for ‘Automotive Lifestyles, he's an avid car collector with connections to the best classic car restorers and collectors in the USA and talks about some of his most interesting finds and the restoration project that got him started. There are still great cars to be found and restored and Dervish and Bradley share some of their experiences of restoration and discuss the trends in cars and what is desirable right now. KEY TAKEAWAYS Early mustangs are so much fun and it was my first restoration project with my Dad. If a car is original when you get it there is a responsibility to preserve it from a historical perspective. There are a lot of different ways you can go about restoring cars When you can't get the parts you learn to work around the problem In Cyprus, they don't throw anything away so there are some great cars you can find. Even if a car can't be saved it might be a good source of parts for another restoration There are cars out there you just need to know where to look for them At a Concours event, I'm about talking with people and being out and about learning I attend Concours Elevens where we celebrate the odd and the insane I invite people to come into the car and really experience it and get involved If I was going to buy a car it would be a Porsche 914 because it's so drivable The market and demand changes and there are cars that are appreciating in value The last year of the Porsche 944 is very collectable but you have to be educated about what you buy and understand the details are critical. I like taking a car apart and putting it back together again so it's mechanically sound and then what I really enjoy is driving the car. He talks with Dervish about female leadership and innovation in the world of motorsport along with his experiences working as a digital marketing lead globally. Craig is passionate about building leadership and future talent and shares some of his experiences, his favourite cars and why TikTok is the place to discover your passion as well as his love of post-it notes KEY TAKEAWAYS You can inspire people every day so that they hope they will own one of those cars one day When you buy a luxury car it's all about it being personalised The car industry is relatively small but is full of very talented designers They don't have huge budgets but it's all about the passion of the people In motorsport, there is a gender issue but there are women in leadership doing amazing things so if we get the chance to pair them with someone from ‘The Sixty Nine' it's inspiring There are groups of powerful exceptional women coming through in leadership in motorsport Autonomous, electric, connected cars are going to be the way forward For every shared car, ten individual cars are removed from the road Maintenance and charging are the issues that need to be resolved for electric cars Governments need to take a bigger role in shared infrastructure because manufacturers need to sell cars across countries and borders TikTok is a great place to connect you to what you are passionate about BEST MOMENTS ‘There is great talent coming through and for me, in motorsport, it can't come quickly enough' ‘Everyone we have in The Sixty Nine is working on a real project' ‘They are speaking with these incredible leaders in motorsport' VALUABLE RESOURCES Full Throttle With Dervish podcast https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9A3Mdz-05KO0vniYIRkdiQ https://www.linkedin.com/in/craigneale/ https://www.instagram.com/craigneale/ The LXIX ABOUT THE HOST Dervish is a Spacecraft Designer and a Mechanical Engineer by day and podcaster by night. Dr Cici Muldoon founder and CEO of VeriVin is an inspirational human being who talks all things cars, judging, racing and wine with Dervish in this in-depth interview. As a Doctor in Physics, Entrepreneur, classic car judge, qualified oenophile (WSET) and brand ambassador for Iso Rivolta Cici shares some fascinating insights into her life explaining how she became a Concours judge, her favourite cars and how she created VeriVin, a company that she is passionate about, to analyse wine creating a truly unique fingerprint for the wine without ever opening the container. Cici is an inspirational individual with a love of life and cars and this is a great opportunity to hear more. KEY TAKEAWAYS I want to get into some sort of historic racing it's something that really interests me There are so many opportunities for historic racing in the UK The TR3 is a lovely car to drive and race. The older the car the fewer records, the rarer the car the less information It's a great job that restorers do forensically tracking down what should be on a car When you are judging you have a limited amount of time to look at a car you are making a call on its authenticity and its beauty, which is subjective and very difficult to do. When judging you break the car down into the engine, interior and exterior My judging is focused on Ferrari a brand I'm obsessed with It can come down to if a Philips or flat head screw has been used. The details are important because it's about preserving the history The more missteps a car has, the further it strays from the original, the harder it is to bring it back The key conversation about restoration had should be between the owner, the restorer and any experts Iso Rivolta is a passion project, they launched a vision car which was hugely successful and followed it with the launch of the Iso Rivolta GTZ BEST MOMENTS ‘Winning in your class at Pebble Beach is without comparison' ‘Judging a car is about how sensitively it's been restored' ‘You are making a call on its authenticity and its beauty, which is subjective and very difficult to do' VALUABLE RESOURCES Full Throttle With Dervish podcast ABOUT THE HOST Dervish is a Spacecraft Designer and a Mechanical Engineer by day and podcaster by night. Dervish is talking to entrepreneur Steven Sulley host of ‘The Steven Sulley Podcast' and co-founder of Woodbury House and the Minboso wellness platform. They talk about motivation, getting around the right people and why it's about your mindset, investing in yourself and understanding that life is about being prepared to put in the work and how much you want it. Steven shares how he keeps motivated and the pivotal role boxing and being fit plays in being open and prepared for all the opportunities along with why he believes setting goals, affirmations and incantations are key. KEY TAKEAWAYS Motivated people have either got it or they haven't If you take someone and put them in a specific environment then it can bring out characteristics not seen previously. There is no right or wrong to life. If you put yourself in an environment with other motivated people you will be motivated You need to get yourself around the right people In life, if you don't put the graft in and you don't want it enough you'll get found out at some point Everything is about communication and everyone is selling what they are enthusiastic about There is a difference between stress and feeling pressured one gives you empowerment and the other gives you problems. What you put out to the universe is what you get back If the artist is backed by a recognised gallery, backed by a recognised dealer, and backed by a recognised museum you have a good indicator for investment. An affirmation is something positive, personal and present. Making money is about being resourceful and having the right mindset. Lunaz are the company at the forefront of designing classic electric cars Designing and building some of the world's most gorgeous automobiles including, Jaguar XK120, xk140 AND xk150s, Bentley Continental S1, S2 AND S3. Classic Range Rover and Rolls Royce Phantoms. They are in the business of the restoration, re-engineering and electrification of some of the most celebrated cars in motoring history, it's a labour of love built out of a love of classic cars and the team are a fusion of world-class engineers and master craftspeople who together create and produce classic cars with sustainability and useability. KEY TAKEAWAYS The three questions around classic cars are usability, reliability and future sustainability. A fantastic team has been brought together to restore and build cars of the most extraordinary quality with electric conversion as part of the process. Luna is in the business of world-class level restoration which requires traditional skills being implemented by those who are masters of their craft. It's a place where technology and artisan skills meet At the beginning of every year, we release a certain tranche for production that will be available to order for the following year. We are creating an upcycled product so we want to go through the restoration process as sensitively as possible but quality is paramount so we do replace where necessary The re-engineering process is about subtly integrating things such as air conditioning to ensure sustainability These vehicles have the beauty of a classic car that can be driven every day. The key is maintaining the authenticity and the spirit of the original vehicle. The world requires a cleaner future and governments are legislating hard for this. At the moment electric cars are the future and the infrastructure is increasing dramatically. We engineered for augmented sound for the cars but after people drive them they find the lack of noise is what they want. How do you become a pilot? Dervish is talking to David Crook, commercial airline pilot and author of ‘A Pilot's Life For Me' He explains why his book is an insight into how to go about becoming a pilot and includes everything from what to put in your flight bag, to medical exclusions and what to expect to be paid. He also talks about the planes he loves to fly, the best and most challenging airports to take off land at and how pilots maintain their flying hours. David and Dervish also discuss the future of flying and the possibilities of flying cars as a viable commercial entity and what it will take for this to become a reality. KEY TAKEAWAYS Flying the Boeing is a more classic pilot experience whereas the airbus has more technology to assist the pilot. The airbus is easy to land without much effort due to the technology. As a pilot, you have to keep up your flying hours. At the moment pilots are using extended time in simulators. You have to achieve a set number of hours flying a plane to maintain your licence Helicopters are very different to fixed-wing aircraft and you require a different licence London city is a challenging airport its narrow and has buildings on all sides. Bird strikes on planes cause lots of damage to planes I would love to have flown Concorde but it came to a natural end because of the world moving forward It would be great to see Concorde at air shows but the cost would probably be prohibitive Air taxis are likely to be a reality but not at the moment. It's not the technology its more about the infrastructure for it to be able to work effectively I'd love to see a future with flying cars even if it put me out of a job Now turn around times are much shorter so it can be much more difficult to spend time with passengers BEST MOMENTS ‘Flying the airbus is a hell of a kick' ‘People just don't know what to expect or what to do if they want to be a pilot so the book includes everything about becoming a pilot' ‘Flying is a beautiful thing and if you are able to fly it's a great past time' VALUABLE RESOURCES Full Throttle With Dervish podcast A Pilot's Life For Me: A guide on how to become an airline pilot - David Crook https://www.facebook.com/apilotslifeforme https://www.instagram.com/apilotslifeformeuk/ ABOUT THE HOST Dervish is a Spacecraft Designer and a Mechanical Engineer by day and podcaster by night. Dervish talks with Shahzad Sheikh, media professional, content creator and motoring journalist known as ‘the brown car guy' They discuss buying a classic car and maintaining it along with what cars will be the next classic cars and how to choose the car for you. If you take on classic car restoration you can face challenges with getting parts and there are things you need to know such as how paint is now technically different to how it was in the past. Reliability is always a factor and Shahzad discusses the most and least reliable cars out there and shares his views on the cars that will be the new classics and continue to appreciate in value. KEY TAKEAWAYS Any petrol car is going to be a good investment for the future. Scrappage schemes and taxes on older cars mean there aren't so many about any more. The sort of car you could buy a few years ago for under a grand just don't exist anymore. It will come down to the last car standing When you look at bigger cars they are technically complicated You have to go older to find longevity because cars weren't so complicated then so can be maintained. The type of paint has changed so anything resprayed is obvious. The best supercar out there for reliability is the Audio R8 Lamborghini, now owned by Audio have gone from one of the least to one of the most reliable supercars The Classic car genre is the one to watch at the moment. Eighties cars are going up in value dramatically they are becoming very desirable It's important to relate to the car, have you always like the look of the car and wanted one? are they going up in value? I'm predicting that eighties muscle cars will go up in value and become more desirable. Electric cars are being forced on us but there is not the infrastructure in place to make them viable. They are not the ultimate solution; we have to look at things more intelligently this is not possible and there remain a lot of unanswered questions. Dervish is talking with Katherine Gregg, Law of Attraction and Therapeutic Coach about how understanding the law of attraction can mean you can retrain your beliefs to attract more of your desired experience. This is a fascinating insight into the positive and negative energy that we all have and how both our negative and positive emotions serve a purpose, helping us to understand our place in the Universe and how we can work in conjunction with it to create the life we want and thrive alongside others. KEY TAKEAWAYS Law of attraction is one of many natural laws like gravity Like attracts like whatever you put out you will attract the same Life will mirror how we see ourselves. If you don't see yourself in a positive way you will attract negative attitudes and negative people. If you think highly of yourself your life will mirror this. To not think highly of yourself doesn't serve you in any way. If you don't think highly of yourself then your life is not alright. You can feel both positive and negative energy from others. Negative emotions serve a purpose how can you know what you want if you don't know what you don't want. You can retrain your belief system so you are mostly working at the positive end of the scale to attract more of your desired experience You are responsible for how you feel and your energy We are social creatures so not having human connection is difficult. Live is one big learning curve and we continue to grow and change throughout our lives. Mandy Hickson is an inspirational former fast jet/Fighter Pilot in Tornado GR4's. Now a motivational speaker and Human Factors facilitator she talks with Dervish about her experiences flying and making it in the RAF as a female. They talk about motivating younger females and people to become fighter pilots and what pilot life is really like. Mandy also explains how she made the move into motivational speaking and how recently she has been able to extend her reach through virtual conferences to talk globally about her passion and experiences. KEY TAKEAWAYS It's about challenging protocols and creating change through teamwork. You can't be what you can't see and girls need to be able to see strong role models and see things are open to them. Everyone needs a purpose and drive in their lives. We only want to better ourselves if we can see an end result I love low operational flying because you have to be really focused and it's about as exhilarating as flying can get. Failing something makes you stronger and working hard can get you where you want to be. You need in any organisation to have cognitive diversity. The air force is changing as an organisation with different ways to look at things I did one speech and then when asked said I was a motivational speaker because sometimes you have to fake it until you make it. After being heard speaking and sharing my story I was asked to be part of inspiring futures Speaking virtually has meant I have been able to extend my reach considerably and talk to people I would never have been able to speak with before. It's about finding what you enjoy doing and then working back to find a career that you can enjoy. You have to find a direction and a purpose when you find a career you want then you have a purpose. Whatever your background you need to believe in yourself, if it's going to be someone why shouldn't it be you? Daniel Knightley is a Commercial Airline pilot, you tuber and podcaster as well as being an Actor and an Entrepreneur. He talks with Dervish about the automotive industry, social media, space and the future of electric cars. They also share their views about the new T50 super/hyper car from Gordon Murray and the best Mechanical supercars to buy. KEY TAKEAWAYS I have so much to say and I wanted people to know what's really happening People don't truly say what they think because of the things they get from the companies Social media is all about being consistent. Electric cars are a very controversial subject. At this moment in time, Electric cars are not a viable option and may not be the final solution E-fuel may be the answer as its zero-carbon but means the performance is maintained. There is currently no infrastructure for this The future will be a combination of different approaches. It seems people are removing the passion and what makes car racing an experience that affects your body. If I see someone's journey on a road trip that's what makes it fascinating. Audi owns the company but Lamborghini still run things their way. Lotus has achieved something great with what they've done but now they seem to have lost their sense of direction. Companies are reiterating previous cars instead of innovating with something new It's impressive what Elon Musk has achieved and having pioneers in space disrupting things is vital. You can buy a product and immediately change it to make it your own and have a car with better performance than the factory model. Professor Chris Welch Head of Space Payloads Laboratory and Director MSC in Space Studies at International Space University. Chris is a frequent commentator on space and has a significant track record in space education and outreach and talks to Dervish about why we are looking for life on other planets and what it will mean if we find evidence. The search for life on other planets is about helping us to answer the big fundamental questions and signs of life on other planets would forever alter our position on earth. In this fascinating episode, they also discuss space debris, who, if anyone, can own a planet and launch sites. With great content and space information, everyone can learn something new. KEY TAKEAWAYS If humans live across different planets then it is much more difficult for humans to be wiped out as a species. There are planetary protection protocols to try and ensure we don't contaminate other planets. Communication Satellites in geo orbit are boosted higher into a graveyard orbit when they come to the end of their lives. In space, the objects still belong to the people who made them there are no rights to salvage in space. For lower orbiting satellites it's accepted that they will be designed to re-enter the atmosphere within 25 years of the end of their working life. Now there is space situational awareness and people need to think about what will happen to satellites when they are at end of life. Previously it was only countries that could consider space projects but now there are individuals who are able to make it a reality. The money in space comes mainly from the delivery of services In the space entrepreneurial area improvements in electronics mean satellites can be smaller and the launch is less costly. There are two different approaches there is the need for products that are reliable and for products that are a minimum viable product designed for low cost and to be replaced frequently. BEST MOMENTS ‘Every time you launch something into space it has to be legally attached to a country' ‘Elon Musk has reduced the cost of getting into space' ‘Companies that make satellites make money; companies that launch satellites make money' VALUABLE RESOURCES Full Throttle With Dervish podcast Prof. Chris Welch Twitter ABOUT THE HOST Dervish is a Spacecraft Designer and a Mechanical Engineer by day and podcaster by night. Dervish talks to Dr Rebecca Struthers and Craig Struthers co-founders of Struthers watches about their passion for watchmaking and the special value of vintage tools. They discuss the history of watchmaking and the resurgence of artisan watchmakers where you meet the person who is making the watch. This is a fascinating opportunity to hear about how Rebecca and Craig use vintage techniques to create beautiful contemporary pieces and understand more about the world of Struthers watchmakers. KEY TAKEAWAYS A basic watch movement comprises of a series of components including a wheel, lever and an oscillating balance. Traditionally springs are made of steel but they can be made of a variety of different materials. In the future, it might harder to repair watches if they have been made from more unusual materials. We source parts and watch tools from all sorts of different places and the tools are so well made that they have become part of how we work. We don't have any new equipment and each piece of equipment has its own idiosyncrasies We design tools that can use on current equipment adapting it to be able to do something else. When we are working it's about the feel, knowledge and knowing what will work. Making watches takes a long time it can be anything between 2 to 4 years to create a finished piece. Watchmaking is at a really interesting point currently with an increase in independent watchmakers. Dev is talking with Ben Green of Ben Green Racing about his car choices and the new racing season. They discuss their shared love of American cars and how, if you do your research and make the right choice, it's possible to buy cars that will appreciate in value. They also discuss car seats and the complexities of moulding seats for individuals, along with why an M2 is such a desirable car for those who love to drive. KEY TAKEAWAYS The M6 has 120 more horse-power and it's lighter, but the M4 is the more successful car. American cars are a thing of beauty. The Chevrolet is both an investment and something lovely to drive. I paid for a mechanic to go and check the car in the US. When you are buying a car, you need to make sure the numbers all match up. I was looking for a car that was more "me" and would make a profit if I was selling it If you can afford it, buying cars is a good investment at the moment The first-generation Camaros have already increased significantly in value In a car on long journeys, you need to make sure you have good lumber support In racing cars the seat is moulded specifically to you. In single-seater cars, the seat is incredibly important The M2 is a fantastic car - a proper drivers car. Dev is with Tony Fleming of Flemings Ultimate Garage based in the United States. Tony reflects on how he started out in the classic muscle car business and restoring old classics along with his views on the electric car industry and why it's easier to be wealthy and advocate for electric cars. They discuss ways of keeping your costs down when restoring a vehicle and the appeal of Car and coffee mornings for car fans and reminisce about why people love the Classic minis and continue to enjoy the Fiat 500 KEY TAKEAWAYS It started with one car on a Saturday and now here we are twenty years and almost four thousand cars later. We are all about ‘you remember when' It's hard to know everything about every car I like to know intimately about the cars I work with. A pro touring car is one where it's been professionally restored but also modified. you get the best of both worlds with a great old school muscle car without some of the things people don't like such as the smell of petrol. Restoring cars always costs more than you think it's going too We have some really great tips to help people who are restoring cars along the way. Controlling costs is an important part of any restoration. We have a good following in the United States and people tell us about cars that are sitting in barns. Often people keep cars because of an emotional attachment but then do nothing with them so the car just ends up rusting away. The electric car is like having sex without the sound Those who want to save the world and have the money talk about electric vehicles but the hard-working people of the world can't afford anything other than a petrol vehicle. In this episode, Dev talks with Alex and Lewis who are in the middle of a complete nut and bolt restoration of a Land Rover. They discuss road trips, the Concourse of Elegance and their dream cars along with an in-depth discussion about the journey Alex and Lewis are on to restore and build a versatile Land Rover and how deep should you go with car restoration in this fascinating chat between restoration enthusiasts. KEY TAKEAWAYS The chassis was always going to be the biggest thing because it's a bit of an unknown until you get to it. We play with cars all the time and this restoration is s a complete nut and bolt restoration It will be new paint over the old war wounds. We ended up spending double the time because everything was so rusted. Talking to people face to face is so much better than doing it remotely. Land Rover always over-engineer for towing capacity so we are confident about our adaptations. I got in touch with them and they thought the idea of a junior Concourse of Elegance was great I entered with my electric Triumph Junior car and nearly won it. Each to their own as far as cars and the design of them. For me, it's all about the Land Rover being able to do what I want it to from being able to get across fields to being on the motorway. Roger Atkins is an Electric Vehicle speaker and very well connected in the EV world. He has been in the auto sector for over 30 years and has a passion for EV's and the infrastructure around EV's. He is a member of the board of director for various EV companies and zero emissions companies. We talk about EV's and briefly touch on the Space Industry, including Mars Rover (Rosalind Franklin as she is now known). He is a very interesting individual to have had the pleasure of talking with on this episode of the podcast, I learned a lot and I hope you do too by listening to this episode. KEY TAKEAWAYS Everything in the universe is connected and all part of a greater thing The Luna Rover is the most expensive electric car in the world. Whatever it takes to reduce carbon emissions and radically reduce pollution and increase the air quality is what we should be doing. In most cities, it is the vans, taxis and buses that cause pollution More and more cars are hybrid If you look closely there are lots of different things happening There is a big change coming with the option to travel in non-piloted electrical vehicles If electrical mobility can be connected and shared and utilised more then it will be the way forward The most ineffective aspect of both combustion and electrical vehicles is the low utilisation It will be an economic change with not owning a car being better and cheaper. You have to have a joined-up strategy around infrastructure. Rosemarijn Atalante Vera Veenenbos is a car enthusiast with a passion for vintage automobiles and their history. Her father first introduced her to the world of vintage and classic cars at a very early age and in this very special arena Rose developed both her knowledge and interest. She chats about some of her many experiences touring and what it's like to own and drive an Amil car from the 1920s along with the tours she would like to complete in the coming year. Rose also shares her ultimate wish list of vintage cars, why she will always be a petrol head and her latest entrepreneurial venture – the creation of Superpawa KEY TAKEAWAYS You have to appreciate vintage cars because they don't exist anymore. learning more about the mechanical aspects and coach building of individual cars makes conversations more interesting. Barn finds are not so easy now as they are mostly known about or have been bought and moved. The London to Brighton run is very special with the lining up being a snapshot of what's to come. Hill climbing can be very exciting and everyone enjoys the fun of the cars getting up the inclines. Nigh time rallies are magical and very different from being in the car at any other time I'm interested in nutrition and vegan foods and creating Superpawa was the culmination of my interests. Superpawa is an all-natural energy drink, part of the energy comes from matcha, a green tea powder from Japan. In this episode Dervish talks with Joe at Zircotec, as specialists in the management of heat, they produce high performance plasma-sprayed ceramic coatings that are able to protect components from heat, wear, abrasion and corrosion. They discuss the role Zircotec plays within the motor racing industry and how their specialist products can be successfully used in any vehicles that are modified to increase performance and safety. KEY TAKEAWAYS The exhaust looks amazing but it also has functionality. Motorsport can be difficult to get into but we have solutions that make a difference. We want to provide more and have solutions that solve a range of challenges. In space, there are challenges with heat in specific places. In space, the vacuum can help with heat solutions. We work extensively on the areas of the exhaust and the turbo and areas. The exhaust, turbo and brakes are all areas that generate a lot of heat. The brakes are usually a composite and our barrier coatings can help the heat dissipation. There are different types of coating available. A standard road car has been tested enough to not have any heat issues when used in a standard-setting. The need to contain heat comes when road vehicles are modified. We are working towards helping people to think more about coating usage as a standard. BEST MOMENTS ‘Heat is not always considered outside of Formula 1' ‘It is a step that can improve the performance of the car' ‘The benefits you get from the coating outweigh the extra grams in weight' VALUABLE RESOURCES Zircotec website ABOUT THE HOST Dervish is a Spacecraft Designer and a Mechanical Engineer by day and podcaster by night. Dervish is in conversation with Will Wynn, Owner and Director of the My Car Heaven website. Will is a collector of classics and a car enthusiast and in this wide-ranging chat talks about electric cars the 2030 ban on manufacturers selling diesel and petrol cars, the Concourse of Elegance and hyper cars. As an entrepreneur who is passionate about cars himself and spends his professional time with others who share the same passion, this is a fascinating insight into the world of classic and supercars. KEY TAKEAWAYS The most successful business people know exactly what they want. With an electric car, you just feel like you are moving but with a petrol car, you feel alive when you are driving. We are already one of the highest-taxed countries for cars but what about the planes and trains how can we make them more efficient? There are issues we are all facing about looking after the planet and we need to get together as a global community to solve the problems. There will still be a classic car movement in the future because people have a passion for them. Because people will keep buying them, there will continue to be garages that can fix them. There just isn't the infrastructure to support electric vehicles across the country. Classic cars are something that when you look at them they make. You smile and are nostalgic. I'm more into the older Ferraris because it was about racing. The cars were stripped out When I think about cars I like to think about someone building the car not a manufacturing plant. I like to have things that are the result of engaging with someone who builds something that is bespoke for you. Dervish talks in-depth with Ted Lawlor host of the ‘If Only They Knew' podcast. He shares his experience of creating a podcast and how it's possible to get started with very little outlay and discusses his vision – creating a movement and hub that serves the community and provides a platform for young business minds. This is a great insight into understanding we are all more powerful than we think and it's all about realising that you just need to try rather than stopping before you have begun. KEY TAKEAWAYS I think everything happens for a reason. Having an outline plan for the next five years is important. I have a passion for helping people and I want to create a movement. Your actions can have a ripple effort and change the life of someone else. Doing a podcast keeps me on my toes and keeps me challenged. You can get started with a podcast for hardly anything in money. I want to channel my group into something others can get involved in. I want to get the community involved and provide opportunities and a hub for young business minds. I want to make a change in the community. In this episode, Dervish is talking with Ben Green who began his racing career in karting and now races in the British GT championship. Ben shares great tips and advice about driving to the limit, drifting and racing cars and the fitness levels required to successfully race. They also discuss racing circuits, Lewis Hamilton and driving a car on its limits to achieve success. This is a fascinating insight into what it takes to be part of the British GT championship KEY TAKEAWAYS I started with go-kart racing and that became a hobby that then turned into a career. It's all sponsorship funded and I'm lucky to have great sponsorship The class I race in means the car starts as a road car and is then modified for racing. The heat factor when racing means you have to train for heat resistance through cardiovascular and endurance training. You have to push yourself in training to be able to perform in the car. You only have a short amount of time in the car when you are racing. You have to understand yourself and what you need to do to achieve the level of fitness required. The skills I learnt in drifting have helped me as a race driver. There are some really exciting electric cars coming through and it will be different. Electric racing will pick up in the next few years. They discuss biker code, Colin Chapman founder of Lotus Cars working at the Ace Cafe workshops along with Mark's views on Electric cars the British Racing Drivers Club and the Isle of Man TT. Mark also shares some of his extensive knowledge about the historical importance of Brooklands and historical racing. KEY TAKEAWAYS People come to the Ace Café to hang out and see what turns up. It's extraordinary the vehicles that come along. It's about striking up a conversation with the owner and finding out more. I love and enjoy things that have been built for a purpose. There are beautiful aesthetic pieces of machinery with a purpose Over years' things change and horses have been replaced by vehicles. Our use of vehicles may ultimately be something that becomes something that only the very wealthy can have. Brooklands was the first purpose-built racetrack and opened in 1909. Brooklands was built as a result of legislation banning car racing on public roads. This was when the British Racing Drivers Club, British Motorcycle Racing Club and the Brooklands Aeroclub were established. Daytona in the USA is an exact copy of the Brooklands track.
