What better way to launch the 10th series of DiverCity Podcast, than for host Julia Streets to welcome guest Baroness Helena Morrissey DBE. In this far reaching discussion, they reflect on the 30% Club, which Helena founded in 2010, and discuss her role as Chair of the Diversity Project. Helena shares her insights and learning as an industry leader, considers the progression of women on boards worldwide, and expands on the requirements for organisational change. Together they explore Helena's perspectives on new hybrid working models, the importance of mentoring and the role of male champions. Finally, as she reflects on the past decade, Helena explains why financial firms must authentically prioritise diversity and inclusion in order to reap the rewards and harness the commercial and investment opportunities on offer.
DiverCity Podcast: Talking Diversity and Inclusion in the Financial Services Industry
Since our launch in 2017, race has been an important topic on DiverCity Podcast. In light of the death of George Floyd triggering demonstrations and protests in the United States and around the world, raising deep seated concerns about systemic racism and spotlighting the Black Lives Matter Movement, we have interrupted our planned schedule to bring you this Special Extended Episode. Host Julia Streets is joined by Dr. Funke Abimbola MBE, Chief Executive Officer at the Austen Bronte Consultancy; Paul Monekosso Cleal OBE, Executive Director at Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, Kingston University and National Citizen Service Trust and an adviser to Sainsbury’s and FA Premier League; Donna Herdsman, award winning Professional Services Executive, Mentor and Career Coach and Reggie Nelson, Graduate Analyst at Legal and General InvestmentManagement (LGIM). They discuss institutional racism, black representation and retention, what organisations and leaders can do to recognise racism, challenge behaviours and drive change, the language of race, and how best to attract and retain black talent in the financial services industry.
DiverCity Podcast: Talking Diversity and Inclusion in the Financial Services Industry
This special episode of DiverCity Podcast was recorded at the Innovate Finance Global Summit 2019 in London, featuring interviews with CEOs from across the industry, each offering insights and opinions about where to find the talent the industry needs. Hear highlights from Charlotte Croswell CEO of Innovate Finance and her further thoughts in her interview. Tom Bull of EY offers early insights into the fintech Census and Alison Rose of NatWest Holdings and RBS updates on the Prime Minister and Treasury’s review of female entrepreneurship ‘The Rose Review’. Tim Levine of Augmentum Capital, Karen Rudich of FireDrake, Adam Toms of Openfin, Ben Brabyn of Level39 and Husayn Kassai of Onfido each offer a wide range of perspectives including how we can best educate and attract young people into fintech, tap into diverse pools, how businesses can scale up and accelerate their pace of change, the changing face of leadership in tech, what we need post Brexit and more.
Co-hosts Edie Lush and Claudia Romo Edelman meet three female comics who challenge bias through their jokes and their lives. “I like to play with stereotypes,” says Irish comic Catherine Bohart. “I like to upend them. I like to use them.” Noam Shuster, an Israeli, took up comedy after she failed in more traditional approaches to peacemaking. “Through comedy and performance you can reach more audiences and diverse audiences and audiences maybe I would have never met.” Sindhu Vee (her real name is Venkatanarayanan. Guess how funny she makes that!) explains that her comedy is powered by the “outsiders gaze” of being a bit different all her life. She was born and raised in South India, became a banker, moved to London and married a Dane (they have 3 kids). “I think the biggest stereotype is a mother in comedy,” She says. Co-Host Edie Lush notes how similar these three modern female comics seem to The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, who fought to break into a man’s world of comedy sixty years ago. That’s a fictional TV show but this is real life, now. Special Guest Julia Streets, a comic in London and host of the DiverCity Podcast, recommends facts and actions for this episode. You will also hear from Ann Cairns, the executive vice chair of MasterCard, sponsor of this season of The Global GoalsCast. A research engineer, she was the first woman to work an oil rig in the North Sea. Edie and Claudia also try their hand at comedy, which is why they are sticking to podcasting.
Host Kimberley Cole joins DiverCity Podcast where she discusses the rising number of women in risk & compliance roles and the quest to eliminate modern day slavery. The episode also looks at the importance of mentorship, collaboration and role models, how regulators themselves are starting to create more diverse teams and the need to attract younger talent as well as the enormity of the challenge of addressing human trafficking and the steps financial institutions and their clients can take to help combat the problem.
