Before the FTX blowup there was a serious conversation happening around regulation of the DeFi space. During our Merge event in London last month I interviewed Lawrence Wintermeyer, the Chair of the GBBC Digital Finance (and the former chair of Innovate Finance) on the topic, Paving the Way for Web3 Legitimacy.Given the events of the last couple of weeks this topic has new urgency. For the DeFi industry to scale it must begin a serious and open discussion with regulators and it needs to address some of the thorny issues caused by its decentralized structure. This interview was recorded on October 17 and there was a prescient quote from Lawrence during the interview: "The industry just does not look like a very safe place to put your money right now."In this podcast you will learn:Why people are at war in the digital innovation space. Why it is critical for the web3 industry to come together and self-regulate.What a co-regulatory model could look like. How can approach regulating DeFi where it is by definition decentralized. The difficult issues that most need to be addressed. Why identity and liability considerations are so important for DeFi.How far away we are from effective DeFi regulation. His thoughts on permissioned and closed DeFi networks. What's the most practical thing that we can do to create Web3 legitimacy.Connect with Lawrence on LinkedInConnect with Lawrence on TwitterConnect with Fintech One-on-One: Tweet me @PeterRenton Connect with me on LinkedIn Find previous Fintech One-on-One episodes

On this episode of Scouting for Growth, Sabine VdL interviews Nicole Anderson, Founding Partner at Redsand Ventures who supported Sabine's acceleration programs over a 5-year period by providing those startups with proposition design and go-to-market strategic thinking. These two skill-sets are so important to gain customers and access capital. On this episode, they talk about Nicole's journey from a FinTech venture builder to a sustainable investor. KEY TAKEAWAYS I have sat now, effectively, in almost every seat around the table when it comes to looking at what investible ventures look like, feel like, and what success should and could be. Thankfully, I've had to go through the toughest schooling to make venturing successful and break through some of the barriers in financial services. It has always been a big aspiration of mine to break down the barriers of consumerism and finance. The path I've been on is a perfect platform to learn how to access capital because there is money to be allocated in the world. There always will be. Still, it's only when you've taken the journey yourself and been involved at the grassroots that you understand fundamentally what needs to be done. You can immediately see what the true impact of investment could be. I've finally got to the point in my life where I'm bringing it all together. I'm just a do-er really and I've always done things the hard way. Building ventures is very very tough and all the lessons that came out of that eight years prepared me for one thing: The biggest success factor in a venture is firstly knowing your market and not assuming it's going to remain static. Secondly, thinking ahead of the market and remaining absolutely relevant with your value proposition. This requires a really strong degree of paranoia which then cascades down into how your business model evolves. Never make any assumptions that things are going to stay the same or you know your consumer/customer more than you think you do. Thirdly, everything fails without money. Money will always find a good opportunity, but never underestimate the runway you need to grow and scale. We are not a VC or private equity fund, we're a private equity structure that uses very innovative project financing techniques to deploy financial instruments across a varied portfolio and absorb quite a lot of risk for that portfolio by the way we've engineered the allocation of money. We don't invest at a very early stage, except in very strategic areas, but most of our work is in the growth phase of a venture, and we've moved well out of the area of financial services. I identified 5-6 areas – all verticals or industries – that I believe in. My goal is to build a stellar portfolio with one major investment in each one of them in order to make a significant impact in selected countries/regions, that's the strategy we've taken. BEST MOMENTS ‘Like anything in life, the best opportunities come to you rather than you chasing them down. Often, what you think you want is not actually good for you.' ‘I knew that if I was going to be successful I needed to sit on the money myself and be master of my own universe. By hook or by crook I was going to do what it took to find ways in which to build my own investment structure, so I set up a fund.' ‘The real frustration of many entrepreneurs is that their innovation which is often in the area of green innovation was being misunderstood. I wanted to fill that gap.' ‘We're in an evolution phase. Anyone in the spectrum of grassroots investing right up to multi-fund structure is in the adoption phase of some kind of strategy linked to sustainability and ESG.' On this episode, Sabine VdL interviews Helene Panzarino, author of Reinventing banking and finance, A Framework to navigate global FinTech innovation which was published in November 2020 on Amazon. The pair discuss the book and the key insight Helene provides to reinvent the banking business model. KEY TAKEAWAYS We assume banking has always been what banking is today. In the early days (1200s Italy) hyper-personalisation was going on for aristocrats and the like, now FinTech is the full circle back to hyper-personalisation but we’re doing it at scale, digitally. The industrial revolution had a very big impact on banking, as it did on every other aspect of society and economy. There’s now mass-servicing which took away some of the personalisation and the individuality of banking which intensified through the IT side of banking in the 1950s where we were able to use technology to store and process more data as well as begin to give more products and services to a wider audience. The more recent digital revolution and the internet allowed us to do our banking online and the smartphone brought that to its apex so you have a bank in your pocket. In five years’ time, we’ll be able to DIY our own bank and choose between different products and services, this is where FinTech will come into its own. It took banking ages to realise that the threat that came from outside, posed by the insurance industry, was greater than the threat coming from inside. Insurance and InsurTechs had a much better collaborative partnership relationship from the get-go, whereas banks and FinTechs were adversaries. FinTechs have now grown up and are aware that they need their parents if they’re going to scale and they’re working very well collaboratively now, but I applaud the insurance industry for getting there first. BEST MOMENTS ‘Everyone must now have a global view, no one can stay confined in his/her geographical space.’ ‘The pandemic has shown us the inadequacies for some banks’ desktops, platforms and apps. Consumers are now using those apps, including the non-digital natives who used to visit banking branches in person and weren’t used to digital engagements.’ ‘If you’ve created a startup bank, you need to remember that you’re operating In a regulated industry and if you ‘colour outside of the lines’ the regulator is going to come down on you. So, make sure to bring in experienced people to your C-Suite or Board.’ ‘Everyone knows how to innovate, but everyone does not know how to execute. You need to be given space and the finance to fail. It needs to be OK and not damaging to your growth path or career prospects if you’re going to fail too. Acceptance of different growth paths need to be accepted from the top, if that openness doesn’t permeate from the top-down then nobody’s going to try to grow smartly or differently.’ ABOUT THE GUEST Originally a Commercial Banker, Helene is an experienced FinTech Programme Director, exited entrepreneur, educator, and author. Her book ‘Reinventing Banking and Finance: Frameworks to navigate global FinTech innovation’ came out in Sept 2020, https://www.amazon.in/Reinventing-Banking-Finance-Frameworks-Innovation/dp/1789664098 Previously the MD of the global Rainmaking Colab FinTech Programme, a world-first, post-accelerator program for Series A+ FinTechs and Tier 1 financial institutions, Helene was also responsible for the Inaugural Programme of Education and Events for Innovate Finance. She is an Associate Director of the LIBF Digital Banking Centre, the Lead Fellow, and creator on a world-first FinTech Pathway in a Masters in Tech Entrepreneurship Degree for UCL, and co-creator and lead delivery partner on the Imperial College FinTech Executive Education Programme. Her specialist subject areas are Digital Banking and Alternative Finance (SMEs). She is also the CEO of the New Financial Laboratory enabling community banks and building societies to engage with the global FinTech community. A regular judge, speaker, and moderator for the banking and FinTech awards and conferences, Helene was a BSI FinTech representative for the UK in Brussels, named on the Computer Weekly 100 Women in Tech Award 2018-19 and on the Innovate Finance Women in FinTech Power List for 2019. You can follow Genevieve on Twitter. In this episode we discuss: What 60% of the world's population has in common The lesson from NFT's (non-fungible tokens) that can be used to sustainably lift the bottom 40% out of poverty Creating a more equitable system for the largest global industry The test project that increased Haitian mango farmers income by 7x How agriculture shaped start-up vernacular, and what start-ups can teach agriculture How repurposing blockchain technology can reduce child mortality Key Takeaways: How much waste there is in the current food ecosystem, and the considerable impact on solving food insecurity and reducing hunger that can happen from increasing food distribution effectiveness. We've all heard of blockchain, which is a type of distributed ledger technology. And while blockchain remains shrouded in mystery for most of us, distributed ledger technology has the potential to change the way markets function. For example, by allowing artists to make money with each subsequent sale of their art (instead of just the first sale), or by allowing farmers to receive a greater share of the value from their harvest. This is a great example of the power of repurposing innovation from one industry to another. Certain crops grow best in certain places. This took me back to economics 101 and the concept of competitive advantage, which refers to factors that allow a company or country to produce goods or services better or more cheaply than its rivals. No country wants to be completely food insecure (dependent on imports from other countries to feed itself) but, maybe not every country needs to be producing avocados. One thing that COVID has demonstrated is just how integrated the globe is, and how, if we work as a globe to solve problems, we are able to move mountains in record time. If we were to look at the food ecosystem more holistically from a global standpoint, I wonder what would happen, what changes we would make, and how value would be redistributed around the globe.
