In this episode of The Extra Mile Podcast, we're joined by Pat Morrissey and Brendan Cusick of Human Powered Potential—a four-person team that rowed across the Pacific Ocean to raise over $43 million for the Michael J. Fox Foundation. Pat, who lives with early onset Parkinson's, shares his powerful journey from diagnosis to joining this life-changing mission. Brendan, the team's skipper, walks us through the inspiration behind the row, the mental and physical preparation, and what it was like to face 30-foot waves and total isolation in the middle of the ocean. Together, they talk about the strength of community, the power of purpose, and how the support they received from thousands kept them moving through even the hardest days. This is a story of resilience, teamwork, and pushing beyond limits for something bigger than yourself. Don't miss this incredible conversation. Every mile matters.
The legendary Loudon Wainwright III, whose career has spanned over five decades, is known for his deeply personal songwriting and sharp wit – and oversharing. The patriarch of the Wainwright folk dynasty (which includes Rufus, Martha, their late mother Kate McGarrigle, as well as Lucy and her mother Suzy Roche), Loudon reflects on the balance between oversharing and maintaining privacy in his music in this episode of Basic Folk. He candidly discusses the lines he draws when writing about family and how his experiences with grief have shaped his art. I'm proud to say that I think we found a line he would not cross in our conversation! Listen in to hear history in the making. We also discuss his latest live album, 'Loudon Live in London,' and his unique ability to unsettle and surprise his listeners during performances. We talk about his late father and namesake, Loudon Wainwright Jr., the famous writer for LIFE Magazine, who is present in everything LW3 does. We dive into his early days, including insights on his debut album thanks to a recent essay by Morrissey that highlights its significance. Moz points out that Wainwright has "the pep and readiness of someone who knows we will all soon be skeletons." After reading Loudon's very detailed memoir, Liner Notes, I had to ask him about his relationship to memory and also his reputation for memory. Loudon also touches on his acting career, revealing how roles in popular films – especially Big Fish and Knocked Up – have introduced him to new audiences. Elsewhere he reveals that he was at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival where Dylan went electric and shares his memories of that fateful day.Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/ Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknews Help produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/ Interested in sponsoring us? In the Karen Read murder trial, concerns have emerged regarding the transparency of autopsy information related to the death of Boston Police Officer John O'Keefe. While autopsy photographs have been made public through defense court filings, the full autopsy report remains inaccessible due to Massachusetts state laws that restrict the release of such documents. This lack of access has fueled public speculation and debate, as the detailed findings and conclusions of the medical examiner are not available for independent review. Critics argue that withholding the complete autopsy report hampers a comprehensive understanding of the case and contributes to the proliferation of unverified theories. In the Karen Read case, unsealed letters between Norfolk District Attorney Michael Morrissey and federal authorities reveal a complex dynamic. Morrissey expressed concerns about a federal investigation potentially interfering with the state's prosecution of Read, suggesting possible biases within the U.S. Attorney's Office. He requested the investigation be transferred to another jurisdiction. The Department of Justice reviewed this request but found no basis for recusal, indicating the federal investigation would proceed under the current office.
Rev Billy Simmons (Evidence of a Struggle)In this episode of MyMusic, Graham Coath catches up with the ever-provocative Rev Billy Simmons, frontman of Evidence of a Struggle, to talk about their powerful new single ‘Give Us A Kiss' — a gritty, defiant track from the band's upcoming sophomore album, dropping May 9 via The Glue Factory and The Orchard. This conversation goes beyond the music. Rev opens up about the shift from their instrumental debut to this bold new lyrical direction, shaped by a stellar lineup including Matt Walker (Smashing Pumpkins, Morrissey), Alan Berliant, Solomon Walker, and legendary producer Sanford Parker. They dig into the politics of now, the role of music in social discourse, and what it means to create art in a world increasingly built on algorithms and apathy.Expect truth bombs, spiritual satire, righteous riffs, and the kind of conversation that reminds you why music still matters.

Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking! This episode, we look back at two hugely influential women artists – Patti Smith, whose 1975 “Horses” album inspired so many artists, and Marianne Faithfull, whose passing in January, 2025, is a huge loss. “Horses”, with its confrontational approach - “Jesus died for somebody's sins, but not mine” - changed the landscape of rock music for the next few decades. Produced by John Cale, of Velvet Underground fame, the album opened the door for so many women, including Blondie and so many English punk and new wave bands. We talk about why we like this album, its influential impact, and how Patti Smith developed over later years. Marianne Faithfull has long been one of our favourites, and we talked about “Broken English” in Season 3. (If you haven't heard that episode, here's the link.) Tributes have come from every corner of the industry, all saying one thing – Marianne was inspirational to everyone she worked with, from The Rolling Stones to Metallica to Nick Cave and Warren Ellis.

Morning Show 03-20-25 Hour 1 Morrissey, JFK, EORH by The Watchdog
Presentation Secondary School, Kilkenny 2-0 Presentation College, Athenry Roisin Foley (50), Emily Phelan (67) Two second half goals ensured Cup success for Presentation Secondary School, Kilkenny over defending Champions Presentation College, Athenry in a sun-soaked Athlone Town AFC this afternoon (March 19). It's been some season for the Kilkenny kingpins as this victory confirmed a Cup double for the girls with their Senior crew capturing the National title five weeks ago in the same venue with six of the Junior squad involved in that showpiece. It was a case of taking their chances when they came with a sublime effort from Roisin FOLEY to open her account for Kilkenny with twenty minutes of the game remaining. Vice Captain Emily PHELAN made sure of the win three minutes from time when she saw her effort go in off the keeper. Kilkenny made the brighter start to the contest with Hannah Griffey forcing a brilliant save from Jane Brennan with 13 minutes on the clock. Towards the latter stages of the first half, it was Athenry that dominated most of the possession but just couldn't get the ball on target as the teams went in goalless at the break. Within four minutes, Kilkenny broke the deadlock with a superb set piece from Roisin FOLEY that sailed over the head of Brennan and into the top corner, leaving the Galway shot-stopper no chance. The Galway side had a great opportunity to draw level a few moments later when Niamh Kilgannon had a glancing header goal bound only for Isabelle Carroll to produce a top class save at the near post to deny the youngster. Noone, Duffy and McNamara had half chances blocked down with some solid defensive play from Presentation, Kilkenny. The killer blow for Athenry came three minutes from time when Emily PHELAN'S cross slipped through the hands of Brennan and in for Kilkenny's second of the afternoon. After the game, Presentation College manager Joe Finnerty spoke to Galway Bay FM's Mike Rafferty. == PRESENTATION SECONDARY SCHOOOL, KILKENNY | Isabelle Carroll, Anna Morrissey, Roisin Foley, Hannah Griffey, Maria Ryan, Ellie Barron, Kate Ryan, Olivia Dunphy ©, Emily Phelan ©, Meadhbh Doherty, Ellen Treacy SUBS USED | Kate Dalton for Treacy (46) Amy O'Shea for Barron (46). Clive Langer in conversation with David Eastaugh https://newclang.bandcamp.com/album/new-clang Best known as one of the UK's most successful record producers with a string of high-profile credits in his portfolio, CLIVE LANGER returns in the new year with a second album from his band project, THE CLANG GROUP.A belated follow-up to 2016's Practice, the Group's maiden outing for Domino Records, New Clang was recorded with Deaf School co-conspirators John Wood (aka Max Ripple) and Gregg Braden, along with former Klaxons bassist Jamie Reynolds. Written and recorded in the aftermath of Clive's 70th birthday, New Clang is adeeply personal but incredibly vibrant album; catching Clive in reflective mode, the songs address the process of ageing and the state of the world,as well as confronting his own addiction to alcohol.“ After the pandemic, the dust settled, it felt like it was time, a new time, to play again,” he explains. “Not to revisit but to write and rehearse with my Clang Group mates. We were missing a bass player and fortuitously I met Jamie Reynolds and he filled the vacancy. The songs started to flow, we were back in the groove!”“The new album is the first sober songwriting I think I've done in almost 50 years,” he adds. “I've known and accepted that I was an addict for decades... I just didn't do anything about it. I thought I could live with it, I still enjoyed it. Someone once asked me ‘What do you do?' I replied ‘I drink'. Anyway, making an album sober was like making an album drunk except I wassober!!” Packaged in spare black-on-white, suggesting a tabula rasaof sorts, New Clang's distinctive sleeve artis the work of British artist Edwin Burdis, whom Clive met during his time with Domino Records. “Clive asked me to a studio in London to listen to his new album, still a work in progress,” recalls Edwin. “I was struck by the contrast between the upbeat music and its underlying melancholy, evoking clowns and cartoon characters and a nostalgia for London's recent past. At the time, I had been drawing simple cartoon motifs that aligned perfectly with Clive's songs. I wanted the campaign to be cohesive—black-and-white graphics that blend humour with a sense of tragedy and sadness.” A founder member of pioneering Liverpool art-rockers Deaf School, Langer is noted for a string of production credits (usually in collaboration with Alan Winstanley) on hits forthe likes of Dexys Midnight Runners (the no.1 single and album ‘Come On Eileen' and Too-Rye-Ay)andDavid Bowie(‘Absolute Beginners') plus numerous landmark releasesfor Elvis Costello, Madness, Morrissey, The Teardrop Explodes, China Crisis, Bush, They Might Be Giants, The Rockingbirds and, more recently, Fat White Family.
Big Fat Five: A Podcast Financially Supported by Big Fat Snare Drum
Today, we've got another segment of the podcast called Big Fat Five. This is where I invite my favorite drummers on the show to break down the five records that helped shape their approach to the instrument. This format also inspired my book, Drummers on Drumming, which is available now as a paperback or ebook on Amazon. Today's guest is Jared Shavelson. I met Jared through a mutual buddy and Big Fat Five alum, Mike Robinson. Jared is the real deal. He studied jazz in college but left early to kickstart his career—and it's safe to say that decision paid off. Over the years, he's played with Seal, The Bronx, Mariachi El Bronx, Joyce Manor, The Hope Conspiracy, Paint It Black, The Aquabats, and so many others. I just saw him perform with Mariachi El Bronx on New Year's Eve, opening for Morrissey at The Palladium. He was playing a cocktail kit, and the Afro-Cuban rhythms he was laying down were absolutely insane—I was completely blown away. Now, we were supposed to record this a few days ago, but life in LA had other plans. Between the fires and travel chaos, it was hard to pin down a time. Jared ended up flying out of Los Angeles Thursday night, only to get stuck in Atlanta during a snowstorm when his flight was canceled. After being stranded at the airport for 18 hours, he decided to help pass the time by hopping on the mic with me. That's why the audio in this episode might be a little rough—picture Jared huddled in the corner of a busy terminal while we recorded. --- Get Your Copy of the Drummers on Drumming Book Today!
Actor Alec Baldwin has filed a civil lawsuit against Santa Fe District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies, Special Prosecutor Kari Morrissey, and other officials, claiming malicious prosecution and violations of his civil rights. The lawsuit follows the dismissal of criminal charges against Baldwin in connection with the 2021 death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rust. Baldwin was holding a prop pistol during a rehearsal when it discharged, killing Hutchins and wounding director Joel Souza. Baldwin faced an involuntary manslaughter charge, which was thrown out in July by Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer. The judge cited prosecutorial misconduct, including the withholding of key evidence related to the live ammunition on set. The lawsuit, filed Thursday, names additional defendants, including investigators from the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office, the First Judicial District Attorney's Office, the Santa Fe County Board of Commissioners, and the county itself. In the filing, Baldwin's attorneys accuse prosecutors of engaging in a “malicious and unlawful” pursuit of the actor for political and personal reasons. “Criminal prosecutions are supposed to be about the search for truth and justice, not to pursue personal or political gain or harass the innocent,” attorneys Luke Nikas and Alex Spiro stated. “Kari Morrissey and the other defendants violated that basic principle, over and over, and trampled on Alec Baldwin's rights. We bring this action to hold the defendants accountable for their misconduct and to prevent them from doing this to anyone else.” The lawsuit alleges that prosecutors intentionally concealed evidence that would have cleared Baldwin and instead sought to scapegoat him for Hutchins' death. Special Prosecutor Andrea Reeb is accused of making statements about how pursuing the case could benefit her political career as a Republican state representative. Baldwin's attorneys claim that false and incomplete testimony from Morrissey was used to secure his indictment. Responding to the lawsuit, Morrissey said, “In October 2023, the prosecution team became aware that Mr. Baldwin intended to file a retaliatory civil lawsuit. We look forward to our day in court.” The incident, which occurred during the filming of the Western Rust, reignited debates about firearms safety on film sets and led to multiple lawsuits, including Baldwin's. The actor is seeking financial damages through a jury trial, arguing that the defendants must be held accountable for their actions. “Defendants must now be held accountable for their malicious and unlawful pursuit of Baldwin,” the complaint states. The tragic shooting of Halyna Hutchins has left a lasting impact on Hollywood, with many calling for stricter safety protocols. Baldwin's lawsuit underscores broader concerns about the role of political influence and prosecutorial accountability in high-profile cases. #AlecBaldwin #RustLawsuit #HalynaHutchins #CivilRights #MaliciousProsecution #MovieSetSafety #Hollywood Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE?
