David Zahl is the director of Mockingbird Ministries and editor-in-chief of the Mocking Bird website. Born in New York City and brought up elsewhere, David graduated from Georgetown University in 2001, and then worked for several years as a youth minister in New England. In 2007 he founded Mockingbird in NYC. We talk about his latest book The Big Relief:the urgency of grace for a worn-out world. Today David and his wife Cate reside in Charlottesville, VA with their three boys, where David also serves on the staff of Christ Episcopal Church. He is also the author of A Mess of Help: From the Crucified Soul of Rock N' Roll and co-author of Law and Gospel: A Theology for Sinners (and Saints). His book, Seculosity: How Career, Parenting, Technlogy, Food, Politics, and Romance Became Our New Religion and What To Do About It, appeared in 2019 from Fortress Press. Even after all these years, he's still mourning the end of Calvin and Hobbes (and hoping that Morrissey and Marr will bury the hatchet). His favorite theologian is probably a cross between Johnny Cash, Flannery O'Connor and his brother Simeon.

Merchandise remains an important piece of Rhinegeist Brewery's business, and the Cincinnati brewery is leveling up under the guidance of merchandise director Jenny Morrissey.    Morrissey and Rhinegeist VP of marketing Tracey Ireland share the evolution of the company's merch strategy from “marketing tool,” to an individual business unit.    After hitting its peak in the late 2010s, Rhinegeist's merch business started to decline. Morrissey, who joined the company a year ago, has brought a fashion background and a new approach to the business, from assortment planning to limited-time offerings.   Morrissey and Ireland share how they're working to engage Rhinegeist's diverse customer base, from out-of-town visitors to the brewery's Cincinnati taproom, to its home market “super fans.”   “We're trying to get as many skull drop T-shirts on as many people as possible for every occasion,” Morrissey said.     Morrissey and Ireland discuss efforts to re-engage fans with new products via event-driven and limited-time offerings and monthly product drops.    “We're exploring doing a lot more illustration, a lot more nods back to Cincinnati heritage and just having a lot more fun with it, a lot more humor,” Morrissey said. “And then driving sales with scarcity, essentially, and keeping our assortment fresh. It's such a good lever to pull to just keep things fresh, keep people coming back to check what we have that's new.”   The conversation covers trend spotting, sourcing inspiration, partnering with brands and tapping into a collector community. Morrissey and Ireland also share why creating emotion is key to breaking through with consumers. Plus, they share when to cut bait on slow-moving inventory.    Ahead of the interview, the Brewbound team talks through Republic National Distributing Company's (RNDC) exit from California. Plus, the trio play Another Round or Tabbing Out on the creation of family-friendly spaces, and Almanac CEO Damian Fagan's distaste of the word “taproom.”

Few sitcoms defined the 1990s quite like Men Behaving Badly. In this episode, we dive deep into Simon Nye's laddish comedy that helped shape a generation's humour—examining how it balanced crude jokes with surprising warmth, and why Gary and Tony's childish chaos was more endearing than offensive. Though some aspects haven't aged as gracefully, its cultural impact is undeniable. We explore the origins of the show, tracing it back to Nye's lesser-known novel and the sharp instincts of legendary producer Beryl Vertue. Her belief in the project led to a series that would become a post-watershed hit—moving from ITV to the BBC, where it truly found its voice. Vertue's influence wasn't just behind the scenes; her approach to nurturing cast and crew was rare and heartfelt. The chemistry between Martin Clunes and Neil Morrissey became the show's beating heart. We unpack how Morrissey's arrival as Tony transformed the show after Harry Enfield's original run as Dermot. Enfield's performance was strong—but Morrissey brought a laddish charm that made Men Behaving Badly an iconic bromance long before the term entered pop culture. From memorable episodes like In Bed with Dorothy to that unforgettable Kylie Minogue Comic Relief sketch, we celebrate the sitcom's most classic moments. We also touch on the lesser-known behind-the-scenes stories—like Simon Nye's own silent cameo and the US remake that never quite captured the magic. Finally, we reflect on the cast's lasting affection for the series and why calls for a reunion never quite die down. With heartfelt recollections from Clunes, Ash, and Nye himself, this episode is a love letter to one of the UK's most chaotic, lovable, and enduring comedies. Talk2TheHand is an independent throwback podcast run by husband and wife, Jimmy and Beth. Fáilte ar ais chuig eagrán nua de Ar An Lá Seo ar an 22ú lá de mí Bealtaine, liomsa Lauren Ní Loingsigh. I 1981 bhí an Taoiseach I mbaol pholaitiúil mar gur lainseáil sé é féin in olltoghchán ag déanamh an rud a mbeadh an rialtas ag déanamh in ionad gealltanas chuig an phobal. I 2009 tháinig an nuacht amach go raibh an tAire don ghnóthaí sóisialta ag smaoineamh ar obair do trí lá in ionad daoine á mbriseadh as a bpost. I 1981 bhí 9 eastát in Inis gan solas agus bhí daoine ina chónaí in eastát amháin ar feadh cúig bliana. I 1992 tháinig sé amach go raibh an bord sláinte chun iarratas a dhéanamh do mhaoiniú ón rialtas chun forbairt leis an chostas de 10 milliún punt ag an ospidéal in Inis. Sin The Black Eyed Peas le Boom Boom Pow – an t-amhrán is mó ar an lá seo I 2009. Ag lean ar aghaidh le nuacht cheoil ar an lá seo I 1980 thosaigh U2 a turas cheol a bhí 23 dátaí acu dóibh darbh ainm 11 O'Clock Tick Tock Tour. Thosaigh siad an turas cheol ag The Hope & Anchor I Londain. I 2000 bhunaigh Robbie Williams carthanas do pháistí leis an airgead a thuill sé leis an margadh a rinne sé le Pepsi. An t-ainm a bhí ar an charthanas na Give It Sum agus bhí timpeall 2 milliúin punt acu ag an tús. Bhí carthanas eile ag fáil an t-airgead cosúil le UNICEF agus Jeans For Genes. Agus ar deireadh breithlá daoine cáiliúla ar an lá seo rugadh Naomi Campbell sa Bhreatain I 1970 agus rugadh amhránaí Morrissey sa Bhreatain ar an lá seo I 1959 agus seo chuid de a amhrán. Welcome back to another edition of Ar An Lá Seo on the 22nd of May, with me Lauren Ní Loingsigh 1981: the taoiseach put his political danger on the line last night as he launched himself into a general election campaign holding out the governmets record instead of glossy promises to the voters. 2009: social affairs minister hinted at subsidisng a three day week for workers, where the alternative would be lay-offs. 1981: there were 9 housing estates in ennis still without public lights and people had been living in at least one of them for 5 years. 1992: the mid western health board was about to apply for government funding to undertake a massive £10 million development at ennis general hospital. That was The Black Eyed Peas with Boom Boom Pow – the biggest song on this day in 2009 Onto music news on this day In 1980 U2 kicked off their 23 date '11 O'Clock Tick Tock' tour at The Hope & Anchor in London. 2000 Robbie Williams set up a children's charity with the cash he earned from a deal with Pepsi. Episode #548: Inside Solo Health Collective-Making Healthcare Accessible for Independent Business Owners

Welcome to HALO Talks! In this episode, host Pete Moore sits down with Tom Morrissey, founder of Solo Health Collective and a seasoned veteran in the health insurance world, to unpack the complex—and often misunderstood—landscape of healthcare for self-employed professionals. With a career spanning decades at Cigna and deep experience serving everyone from major corporations to solo entrepreneurs, Tom shares how he's dedicated his life to helping small business owners and solopreneurs access quality, affordable health coverage. Despite his success in the large-account space, Tom noticed an unmet need: Small and mid-sized businesses were often overlooked by health insurers and weren't given access to innovative cost-saving or health improvement solutions that benefited the bigger corporations.  If you're a personal trainer, group ex instructor, wellness coach, massage therapist, or any professional running your own business, this conversation is a game changer. Tom explains the differences between HMO and PPO plans, why traditional ACA ("Affordable Care Act") options can fall short for the self-employed, and how his company's unique group plan model is designed to deliver robust coverage (including preventive care and nationwide access) with transparent pricing and minimal out-of-pocket surprises. Plus, hear about partnerships with organizations like the Freelancers Union, and learn how innovative features like HSAs can work for you—even covering perks like fitness classes. On the healthcare issues facing entrepreneurs, Morrissey states, "We saw the growth. It depends on who you listen to, but estimates are that there'll be 90M solo business, owners by 2028. I want to say there's about 60M now. The guys and gals that own these businesses . . . I think, especially when they're young and healthy, are the ones that get screwed the most in healthcare. You know? All they really have access to is ACA plans." Key themes discussed Challenges of health insurance for solopreneurs and self-employed. Differences between PPO and HMO health plans. Underwriting and rate-setting for solo business owners. Preventive care coverage and HSA/HSA usage changes. Brand trust versus new insurance providers like Solo Health Collective. Partnerships with organizations such as Freelancers Union. Long-term cost sustainability for healthier insurance collectives. A few key takeaways:  1. Solo Health Plans Are Filling a Major Gap: Morrissey explains how traditional health insurance often overlooks solopreneurs and small business owners, especially in the HALO space. His company, Healthy Business Group via Solo Health Collective, is designed specifically to provide comprehensive PPO health plans to solo business owners—offering an alternative with more flexibility and better coverage than typical limited-network ACA and HMO options. 2. Key Plan Advantages-PPO Access and Maximum Out-of-Pocket Clarity: Unlike many ACA or HMO plans that limit provider networks and access, Solo Health Collective offers nationwide PPO plans, granting members broader access to healthcare providers. They also have a straightforward approach: After the deductible is met, there's no coinsurance—meaning your deductible is the absolute maximum you'll pay out-of-pocket for covered expenses (with all preventative care covered in full and not applied to the deductible). 3. Plans Are Designed for Solo Business Owners With Medical Underwriting: To qualify, you must have an EIN (Employer Identification Number) and be a business owner without employees. Members go through a quick, five-question medical underwriting process, which allows the plan to provide tailored age, and location-based rates—often significantly less expensive than standard individual policies, especially for young, healthy professionals. 4. HSAs and Innovative Usage for Wellness Are Embraced: The plan supports health savings accounts (HSAs), and Tom shared how, thanks to evolving IRS guidelines and technology, people can now use HSA funds for things like fitness classes and certain wellness purchases, expanding the value of pre-tax health dollars and encouraging preventive care and healthy lifestyles. 5. Long-Term Value and Stability Solo Health Collective is built on a self-insured, level-funded model supported by robust reinsurance (Odyssey A+ rated.) This allows the collective to stabilize costs and potentially keep renewal increases lower than the industry average—especially as it pools healthier, proactive members like those in the wellness and fitness industries. The long-term goal is to create a sustainable, affordable health insurance solution specifically for entrepreneurs who have historically been underserved. Six Dave Ramsey Tips That Could Hurt Your Retirement Plan, #251

Radio personality Dave Ramsey is a huge name in the personal finance niche. While he's celebrated for helping countless listeners take control of their finances, many of his recommendations have sparked debate within the financial planning community.  I'm going to break down six of the most controversial opinions promoted by Ramsey, including advice on retirement withdrawals, debt payoff strategies, Roth accounts, investing approaches, mortgages, and the use of credit cards. I will also weigh up the pros and cons of Ramsey's methods, highlighting where they might help and where they might hinder your journey towards a successful retirement.  Whether you're a Dave Ramsey fan or just curious about best practices for financial wellness, this episode offers a thoughtful, practical take on some hotly contested money moves. You will want to hear this episode if you're interested in... [0:00] Exploring Dave Ramsey's financial advice and when it might not work for you. [07:07] Contribute to your retirement plan to at least match company contributions while managing high-interest debt. [09:07] Prioritize pretax 401(k) contributions for potential tax savings and growth, especially for high earners and those nearing retirement. [13:57] Some active funds may outperform the market, but it's challenging. Paying off all debt immediately may not always be ideal. [17:43] The problem with cash or debit use and envelope budgeting to control spending and avoid debt. [20:11] Limiting credit card use could cause missed benefits. Debunking Controversial Dave Ramsey Financial Advice In the world of personal finance, few names are as recognized as Dave Ramsey. He's helped countless listeners reclaim control of their money, but not all his advice sits comfortably with financial professionals. This week, I'm exploring several of Ramsey's most controversial recommendations, offering candid insight into where these strategies may fall short for those planning a secure retirement. 1. The 8% Retirement Withdrawal Rule is Riskier Than It Seems Dave Ramsey suggests that retirees can safely withdraw 8% of their portfolio annually. He justifies this by assuming long-term market returns of 11-12%. The problem is that average long-term returns are generally projected in the 6-8% range, and those figures often require heavy equity exposure, something unsuitable for most retirees due to the risk of major market downturns. The more widely accepted “safe withdrawal rate” is between 4 and 5%, supported by decades of research. Relying on Ramsey's higher figure may rapidly deplete retirement savings, especially during bear markets. Retirees should consider their investment mix and plan for longevity, erring on the side of caution to avoid outliving their assets. 2. Pay Off Debt, But Not at the Expense of Retirement Savings One of Ramsey's hallmark principles is eliminating all debt before focusing on retirement contributions. While high-interest debt like credit cards should indeed be a priority, neglecting retirement savings, especially employer-matched 401(k) contributions, means missing out on invaluable compounding growth and free money from your employer. Ideally, individuals should strive for a balanced approach: aggressively tackle high-interest debt while contributing enough to their workplace retirement plan to secure the full employer match, and, if possible, work towards saving 10-20% of salary for retirement. 3. All Roth, All the Time? Not Necessarily Ramsey strongly favors Roth accounts for retirement savings, arguing that after-tax contributions and tax-free withdrawals offer valuable benefits. While Roth accounts can be powerful, particularly for young savers or those in lower tax brackets. For higher earners, often in their peak earning years, the upfront tax deduction of pre-tax 401(k) or IRA contributions can provide meaningful savings. Since many retirees drop into a lower tax bracket after leaving the workforce, traditional accounts can be more tax-efficient for certain households. Morrissey advises tailoring the choice to individual circumstances, considering both current and expected future tax rates. 4. Active vs. Passive Investing Ramsey promotes active mutual fund management and even suggests that up-front mutual fund commissions are worthwhile. In the last decade, though study after study has shown that most active fund managers fail to outperform inexpensive index (passive) funds after fees. With some actively managed mutual funds charging fees of over 1%, the compounding effect of those costs can dramatically diminish returns over decades. Passive investing, through low-cost index funds, allows investors to keep more of their money and often experience better outcomes. The same is true for mutual fund commissions; with so many no-load, low-fee options available, there's little justification for paying unnecessary charges. 5. Mortgage Payoff Strategies Ramsey encourages paying off all debt, including mortgages, as quickly as possible and recommends only taking out 15-year mortgages. While debt freedom is a worthy goal, for many, low-interest mortgage debt (especially at rates under 5%) isn't necessarily worth rushing to eliminate. Investing surplus funds in the stock market historically yields higher returns than today's mortgage rates. Additionally, restricting home purchases to what's affordable on a 15-year mortgage makes homeownership unattainable for many. It's more beneficial to keep total debt payments below 35% of gross income and focus on long-term wealth accumulation. 6. Ditching Credit Cards? Ramsey's final controversial opinion is to avoid credit cards altogether and rely instead on cash or debit. While this is a great strategy for habitual overspenders or those burdened by credit card debt. However, for disciplined users, credit cards offer valuable perks, such as travel rewards and cash back, often up to 2% or more. These rewards, when paired with responsible habits (paying off balances monthly), can add up to significant savings without the risk of debt. Dave Ramsey has helped millions move toward better financial habits, but some of his advice may not serve everyone equally well. There's no one-size-fits-all approach to money. Evaluating your financial landscape and consulting with a fiduciary professional are key steps toward making smart choices that truly align with your goals and circumstances. The legendary Loudon Wainwright III, whose career has spanned over five decades, is known for his deeply personal songwriting and sharp wit – and oversharing. The patriarch of the Wainwright folk dynasty (which includes Rufus, Martha, their late mother Kate McGarrigle, as well as Lucy and her mother Suzy Roche), Loudon reflects on the balance between oversharing and maintaining privacy in his music in this episode of Basic Folk. He candidly discusses the lines he draws when writing about family and how his experiences with grief have shaped his art. I'm proud to say that I think we found a line he would not cross in our conversation! Listen in to hear history in the making. We also discuss his latest live album, 'Loudon Live in London,' and his unique ability to unsettle and surprise his listeners during performances. We talk about his late father and namesake, Loudon Wainwright Jr., the famous writer for LIFE Magazine, who is present in everything LW3 does. We dive into his early days, including insights on his debut album thanks to a recent essay by Morrissey that highlights its significance. Moz points out that Wainwright has "the pep and readiness of someone who knows we will all soon be skeletons." After reading Loudon's very detailed memoir, Liner Notes, I had to ask him about his relationship to memory and also his reputation for memory. Loudon also touches on his acting career, revealing how roles in popular films – especially Big Fish and Knocked Up – have introduced him to new audiences. Elsewhere he reveals that he was at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival where Dylan went electric and shares his memories of that fateful day.Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/  Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknews  Help produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/ Interested in sponsoring us? In the Karen Read murder trial, concerns have emerged regarding the transparency of autopsy information related to the death of Boston Police Officer John O'Keefe. While autopsy photographs have been made public through defense court filings, the full autopsy report remains inaccessible due to Massachusetts state laws that restrict the release of such documents. This lack of access has fueled public speculation and debate, as the detailed findings and conclusions of the medical examiner are not available for independent review. Critics argue that withholding the complete autopsy report hampers a comprehensive understanding of the case and contributes to the proliferation of unverified theories. In the Karen Read case, unsealed letters between Norfolk District Attorney Michael Morrissey and federal authorities reveal a complex dynamic. Morrissey expressed concerns about a federal investigation potentially interfering with the state's prosecution of Read, suggesting possible biases within the U.S. Attorney's Office. He requested the investigation be transferred to another jurisdiction. The Department of Justice reviewed this request but found no basis for recusal, indicating the federal investigation would proceed under the current office. These correspondences highlight tensions between state and federal authorities regarding the handling of the case.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-epstein-chronicles--5003294/support.
