175. bölüm için özel konuğum, İngiltere siyasetinde bir ilki temsil eden, bir öncü: Baroness Meral Hussein-Ece. Kendisi, İngiltere Parlamentosu'nun üst kanadı olan House of Lords'a atanan ilk ve tek Türk. Yaptığı çalışmalarla, 2009'da Kraliçe Elizabeth tarafından Order of British Empire'a layık görülüyor, Baroness ünvanı veriliyor ve Hpuse of Lords'a atanıyor. The names in Fragile Wings suggest softness; tenuous and brittle. And there is desperation in “Hopeless Magic,” “Three-Headed Moth” and, of course, the album title. But the album is anything but fragile. A deft mixture of progressive, death, and post-metal, Australia's Cave Sermon delivers a rousing manifesto, in the same echelon as Deafheaven or Baroness, able to match impenetrable sludge with roaring beauty. We talked to Charlie Park on the Woodhouse.
Simon Marks sits in and is joined on Cross Question by Labour peer Baroness Berger, former Conservative defence minister Tobias Ellwood, campaigner Zoe Gardner and director of the Centre for Policy Studies think tank Robert Colvile.

Something has been bubbling up in me after watching a skit from Canada's Baroness von Sketch show a couple of years ago. In this sketch, they highlight how land acknowledgment without material giving can often feel performative or incomplete. So I decided to make a change in my own Canadian private practice. I have started donating a percentage of our monthly gross income to the Mi'kmaw Native Friendship Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia. In this episode, I'm sharing what “land tax” and “reparations” actually mean, why you may consider incorporating them into your private practice, and how you can start doing this in your practice or business. This may not be the whole answer, but it can be a meaningful step forward. In this episode: Putting my money where my mouth is What “land tax” and “reparations” actually mean Why you should consider donating How I make the donations in my private practice Putting my money where my mouth is It's one thing to say we care about something—but in a capitalist society, the reality is that money carries immense power. The good news is, we can choose to direct that power toward justice by being intentional about where and how we spend, invest, and give. The issues of land reparations have always been close to my heart, and I am glad that I have started to practice this value instead of only talking about it. What “land tax” and “reparations” actually mean Reparations refer to intentionally giving back or redistributing resources, often financial, to communities that have been harmed or dispossessed. In Canada's case, indigenous communities. Reparations are also not just symbolic, they are material, consistent acts of accountability due to past colonization, land theft, and systemic harm. Similarly, but distinct, land tax is a grassroots concept. It is not a government-enforced tax. Businesses and people can voluntarily donate money to indigenous communities, acknowledging that they are benefiting from living and working on indigenous land. Why you should consider donating Many people feel on the fence about contributing to something like land tax or reparations efforts because they believe that since they didn't personally steal the land, they shouldn't have to make amends for it. To be honest, this is something I've thought about too. But even then, I knew the way things were didn't sit right with me. Here's why you may want to consider paying land tax and reparations too: 1 - You are benefiting from stolen land ‘Even if you didn't take the land yourself, you are living and working on it. Land that was never sold or surrendered. That benefit: housing, business, income, stability, comes from a colonial system that displaced indigenous peoples.' - Jules Smith 2 - It's about responsibility, not guilt Land tax isn't about “feeling bad” or being blamed. It's about recognizing that we all have a role in repairing harm — especially if we benefit from systems that were built through dispossession. 3 - It supports indigenous-led solutions ‘Your contribution helps fund community programs, housing, food security, cultural revitalisation, and other essential work - led by indigenous people for indigenous people!' - Jules Smith 4 - It's a form of reparative justice because it is one small step in a larger process of reconciliation It's one small, material step in a larger process of reconciliation. Words and land acknowledgments are important, but they don't change material conditions. Consistent giving is a way to restore some measure of balance. How I make the donations in my private practice Each month, I head into my Jane App account and pull my monthly gross income report, which is created before business expenses are taken out. I calculate the percentage I have committed to donating, and then I e-transfer that amount directly to a donation center I have chosen to partner with. It is that simple! Many associate Lone Wolf with Gary Chalk's iconic art, as it was this art that launched the series and provided the lens through which we discovered Magnamund for the first time. Just as incredible, however, is the art of Brian Williams, who portrayed Magnamund for over ten years, from books 9 through 28. Today August and Jonathan honor Williams by examining the incredible evolution of his art as well as the transition from Chalk to Williams. Joining them is artist Justin Wyatt, known for his work on the anthology and upcoming Legends finale, and who brings years of professional training and experience to the examination of Williams style. We'll also dive into the secrets behind what makes a certain Baroness so appealing to the fan base!As mentioned in the episode, there is an interview with Gary Chalk which you can listen to here: Gary Chalk on Magnamund

In the last of our interviews about the recent Supreme Court ruling on the definition of a woman under the Equality Act, Nuala McGovern speaks to Baroness Kishwer Falkner, Chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission. As the body responsible for enforcing the Act, the EHRC gave evidence in the Supreme Court case. In the first BBC interview since launching a consultation on updating their Code of Practice in light of the judgment, Baroness Falkner explains who they want to hear from and why.Five years after the murder of George Floyd, a black man, by a white police officer in Minneapolis, a new BBC documentary is reflecting on the wave of Black Lives Matter protests that followed, including in the UK. Backlash: The Murder of George Floyd tells the story through the eyes of some of those who found themselves on the frontline during the spring and summer of 2020, including Khady Gueye, who made headlines after a local protest she planned in the Forest of Dean was initially cancelled. She joins Nuala, along with author, producer and speaker Nova Reid, to reflect on the impact the events of that time have had on their lives, and what has changed since then. Nuala is also joined by Sarah Pochin, the first female MP for the Reform UK Party. The Runcorn and Helsby by-election was won by just six votes - the closest result in modern history. Jenny Jones, Baroness Jones of Moulsecoomb, speaks about why she is campaigning on topics including salmon farming and water company pollution in the latest episode of Lord Speaker's Corner.‘We've seen water companies polluting our waterways, our beaches, our lovely fishing streams… our chalk streams that are very rare and precious. And yet, we still can't stop them doing it.' Baroness Jones is one of two Green members of the House of Lords alongside Baroness Bennett of Manor Castle. In this episode, she speaks to Lord McFall of Alcluith about why she campaigns on a range of topics.‘People carry on eating salmon, even though the way they're produced in salmon farms is absolutely horrifying. It is the lice. The fish in the farm suffer, quite often die in their pens because the lice have eaten so far into their flesh. Wild Atlantic salmon going past these fish farms can get poisoned by the toxic stuff, all the antibiotics and so on, coming off the farm fish.' Baroness Jones describes how members initially questioned the Green link to various issues when she first joined the Lords but how that has now changed. She explains ‘I had to explain to people everything is about the environment. If you build the wrong houses in the wrong place, then it's a disaster for future flooding, and so on.'Baroness Jones also shares how she came to the Lords after training as an archaeologist and later serving as a London Assembly Member and Deputy Mayor.See more from the series https://www.parliament.uk/business/lords/house-of-lords-podcast/ Hosted on Acast. Baroness Catherine Ashton, formerly the European Union's lead for foreign and security strategy, discusses challenges, opportunities and tips for collaborative strategy-making. As the EU's first High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Baroness Ashton was at the heart of international strategy making between 2009 and 2014 working on some of the world's most intractable problems. She was appointed by the UN Security Council to lead the P5+1 negotiations for a nuclear deal with Iran and was in post when Russia first invaded Ukraine, seizing Crimea and parts of the Donbas in 2014. She also led peace negotiations in the Western Balkans between Serbia and Kosovo, for which she was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. In this episode, she reflects on strategy-making in an international and supranational context, the challenges facing Europe today and how ‘false binaries' – such as those that posit the EU and NATO as being in opposition – stifle effective strategy elaboration. She argues that strategy makers need preparedness of thought and action, the ability to ground their ambition both in reality but also in individual and organisational values, as well as the will to ask, and respond to, the key question of any adaptive strategy, ‘And then what?'. In an illustrious career, The Rt Hon The Baroness Catherine Ashton of Upholland LG GCMG PC was a minister, Leader of the House of Lords, the UK's first female Commissioner in the European Union and the High Representative and First Vice President for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy in the Barroso Commission establishing the European External Action Service as a major actor in international affairs.

In this powerful and urgent conversation, Baroness Joanna Shields offers a compelling account of her work founding and leading the WeProtect Global Alliance—a coalition of over 100 governments and 320 organisations uniting to combat the growing threat of online child sexual abuse and exploitation. A former tech executive and government minister, she bridges sectors to drive systemic change, confronting one of the most complex challenges of our time. She reflects on the Alliance's origins a decade ago, when the international community was still reluctant to acknowledge the prevalence of online predators and child exploitation. Since then, WeProtect has pushed the issue onto the global policy agenda, created a model national response framework, and developed comprehensive threat assessments that inform governments worldwide. Yet despite progress, the scale and severity of online harms remain staggering, and Baroness Shields warns of a worsening crisis if action stalls. At the heart of the problem lies a lack of cohesive age assurance infrastructure across the internet. Unlike in the physical world—where age restrictions govern access to alcohol, voting, or driving—digital spaces remain largely unregulated. This regulatory vacuum leaves children vulnerable to harmful content and predatory behaviour. She argues that responsibility cannot rest solely on parents, who are often overwhelmed and ill-equipped to navigate the evolving digital landscape. Instead, the tech industry must lead with shared standards, particularly through the adoption of a universal, privacy-respecting age signal that follows a child across platforms. The conversation explores the tension between safety and free expression. In this context, Baroness Shields sees age assurance as a pragmatic solution that empowers families and safeguards children without compromising the broader architecture of the open internet. Artificial intelligence emerges as both a promising tool and a dangerous vector. AI can be deployed to detect grooming behaviour and prevent exploitation. But it also enables new forms of abuse—like AI-generated sexual imagery and manipulative chatbots targeting minors. Throughout the episode, Baroness Shields remains clear-eyed about the challenge but anchored in optimism. She believes in the transformative potential of technology—if it is shaped by common sense, accountability, and a commitment to protecting the most vulnerable. Her call is for an alliance of the willing—governments, tech leaders, civil society—to coalesce around a shared digital future where children are empowered to thrive, not endangered by design.
