The Global Commission on Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking has issued a "wake-up call" to the world to act on what they deem "one of the most pervasive human rights issues of our time." The report makes several recommendations specifically for women and girls who make up 54% of the estimated 50 million people trapped in slavery around the world. They are more frequently targeted for forced marriage, sexual exploitation, and domestic labour. Nearly one in four victims are children. To discuss the topic Nuala McGovern was joined by the former Prime Minister, Baroness Theresa May and Nasreen Sheikh, who is a survivor of modern slavery. The Irish writer Edna O'Brien died last year at the age of 93. The last person to be granted an interview with her was the documentary maker Sinéad O'Shea. Her new film Blue Road weaves those final interviews with archive and readings from Edna's own diaries to tell the story of her extraordinary life. For the first time in its 900 year history, girls will be singing in the choir at St Paul's Cathedral on Easter Sunday. We hear from some of the girl choristers, and Kylie Pentelow speaks to Dr Katherine Hambridge, Associate Professor of Musicology at the University of Durham and Carris Jones, Vicar Choral and Girls' Voices Project Manager at St Paul's Cathedral about the significance of this moment.Presenter: Kylie Pentelow Producer: Annette Wells Editor: Emma Pearce

In this powerful and urgent conversation, Baroness Joanna Shields offers a compelling account of her work founding and leading the WeProtect Global Alliance—a coalition of over 100 governments and 320 organisations uniting to combat the growing threat of online child sexual abuse and exploitation. A former tech executive and government minister, she bridges sectors to drive systemic change, confronting one of the most complex challenges of our time. She reflects on the Alliance's origins a decade ago, when the international community was still reluctant to acknowledge the prevalence of online predators and child exploitation. Since then, WeProtect has pushed the issue onto the global policy agenda, created a model national response framework, and developed comprehensive threat assessments that inform governments worldwide. Yet despite progress, the scale and severity of online harms remain staggering, and Baroness Shields warns of a worsening crisis if action stalls. At the heart of the problem lies a lack of cohesive age assurance infrastructure across the internet. Unlike in the physical world—where age restrictions govern access to alcohol, voting, or driving—digital spaces remain largely unregulated. This regulatory vacuum leaves children vulnerable to harmful content and predatory behaviour. She argues that responsibility cannot rest solely on parents, who are often overwhelmed and ill-equipped to navigate the evolving digital landscape. Instead, the tech industry must lead with shared standards, particularly through the adoption of a universal, privacy-respecting age signal that follows a child across platforms. The conversation explores the tension between safety and free expression. In this context, Baroness Shields sees age assurance as a pragmatic solution that empowers families and safeguards children without compromising the broader architecture of the open internet. Artificial intelligence emerges as both a promising tool and a dangerous vector. AI can be deployed to detect grooming behaviour and prevent exploitation. But it also enables new forms of abuse—like AI-generated sexual imagery and manipulative chatbots targeting minors.  Throughout the episode, Baroness Shields remains clear-eyed about the challenge but anchored in optimism. She believes in the transformative potential of technology—if it is shaped by common sense, accountability, and a commitment to protecting the most vulnerable. Her call is for an alliance of the willing—governments, tech leaders, civil society—to coalesce around a shared digital future where children are empowered to thrive, not endangered by design. HEAVY Music Interviews
Finding Your Way With VLAD & KATIE From SLUNG

HEAVY Music Interviews

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 26, 2025 26:16

Interview by Kris PetersEnglish rock outfit Slung's upcoming debut album is a collaborative combustion of its members' experiences, circumstances and supreme musicianship. Their sonic universe - comprising the power of guitarist Ali Johnson's incendiary riffs, vocalist Katie Oldham's enviable dynamic and tonal range, bassist Vlad Matveikov's undulating, yet grounding bass lines and drummer Ravi Martin's expert rhythmic punctuation - is a veritable musical supernova. With influences covering most spectrums of the musical world - from Deftones and Baroness to Wednesday and MJ Lenderman to Queens of the Stone Age and even a sprinkling of Chappell Roan and Fleetwood Mac - Slung refuse to pigeon hole their music and as such have created a sound that is fresh, vibrant, and unmistakably their own. With a debut duo of singles at the tail end of 2024, Slung's sounds piqued interest among discerning ears across the industry and internet. But true to form, the band elected to hit the road in order to gain experience and connect with the people before releasing even one song. It was a brave but ultimately rewarding take on old school ethos that has seen Slung build a sizeable fan base that will only increase after the release of their first album In Ways on May 2.HEAVY spoke with Vlad and Katie to find out more."We're really stoked that these songs we've been cooking up for ages are sneaking out," Vlad enthused. "And it's amazing that people from all over the world are enjoying them. It kind of makes this otherwise horrendously expensive and absolutely ludicrous hobby that is making music - because you can't make a living out of it - a bit more justifiable (laughs)."We ask how they are feeling with the release date getting closer every day."I think it's kind of a mystery what's going to happen in May," Katie answered honestly, "because the way that we've formed this band, or the way this band has become what it is now, it feels so backwards a lot of the time. It feels like we recorded an album before we ever played live once and before or I ever sung these songs in front of a single other person, we recorded them. So when we hear them back now, after having gigged quite a lot the last year, they sound so different to how we're used to playing them. But it's almost like a relic that you discover in the attic, and you're like, 'wow, what's this?' It's like a hidden gem. So there is this sense of nervousness, but mostly just excitement, because as I say, we're just so thrilled to have the chance to make this thing and release it. That alone is good enough for us. But what would be really nice is if there was a bunch of people who received it so warmly. Yeah, so nervous, but really excited."In the full interview, the discussion centred on Slung's debut album In Ways. Vlad and Katie shared insights into their unconventional journey of recording the album before performing live, which has generated intrigue among listeners. Both artists expressed a mix of excitement and nervousness about the album's reception, highlighting the positive global traction their singles have received. They emphasized their gratitude for the opportunity to share their music, despite the challenges faced in the music industry.Katie elaborated on the distinct sounds of their singles, such as Laughter, Collider, and Thinking About It, which showcase different facets of the band's identity. She noted that while some tracks maintain a sonic theme, others, particularly those influenced by country music, may surprise listeners. Vlad described the album as a journey with varied styles, referring to it as "bipolar" in its musical diversity. Both artists expressed confidence in the audience's ability to appreciate the album's cohesion, despite its eclectic influences and serious themes, which range from bullfighting to the sex worker industry. The creative process behind the album was also discussed, with Katie sharing her unique approach of reinterpreting lyrics from other songwriters to craft her narratives. She highlighted the emotional depth of the song Nothing Left, written during a challenging time in her life. Vlad recounted his initial meeting with guitarist Ali in Australia, which laid the foundation for their band and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Lola Young has been an actress, an academic, an activist and campaigner, well known for her work on modern slavery and climate justice. But from the age of eight weeks to eighteen years, she was moved between foster care placements and children's homes in North London. It would take many decades before she was able to begin the search for answers to the long-standing questions that would help her make sense of her childhood. Now she tells Hannah MacInnes the powerful story of how she defied the odds of the ‘care cliff' to become one of the country's most prominent activists, a story of care records, lost letters and one of the highest offices in the country. She joins us to share her insights into parliamentary reform, the role of art in politics, and why poverty is the biggest problem facing the UK today. Learn more about your ad choices. From politics to comedy to campaigning against anti-social behaviour, broadcaster Ayesha Hazarika is the latest guest on Lord Speaker's Corner.Baroness Hazarika grew up in Coatbridge, Scotland and is the first person of Indian Assamese heritage to join the House of Lords. She rose to become a senior adviser to Labour figures including Harriet Harman and Ed Miliband, playing a crucial role preparing them for PMQs:‘I think Prime Minister's Questions gets a very bad rap, because it does often become quite Punch and Judy, but I think it's a really important function of our democracy. There are not many democracies around the world where the principal politician in the land is called to the same spot week in, week out, and faces questions on any topic from any Member of Parliament across the country.'In this episode, Baroness Hazarika talks about her unlikely career path from politics to stand-up comedy and broadcasting, and back to politics. She also explains to Lord McFall how she will use her new political platform to campaign against anti-social behaviour and crime:‘I don't like calling this low-level crime, because I don't think it's low-level crime. But I think this stuff is not easy, but the more we talk about it and the more we press government ministers, that puts the pressure on them to keep on keeping this a priority.'Finally, Baroness Hazarika tells Lord McFall about receiving the phone call to offer her a place in the Lords, explaining ‘I really couldn't believe it, because if you're somebody like me from my background and you've loved politics your whole life, it's a real honour to be asked to join the House of Lords for the party that you have served and the party you love.'She shares that this wasn't the first thought that went through her head though, saying ‘The person said, “I'm calling on behalf of Keir Starmer. This is really serious. Are you by yourself? I think you better sit down.” And the first thing I thought was, "Oh my goodness, what have I been saying on my social media? Am I about to get cancelled, or am I about to get suspended from the Labour Party? Have I said something terrible?' And he made sure the world knew he was a virile man with plenty of mistresses. He wasn't your average ordinary young child because of his knack for computer skills, coding expertise and love for  video games, etc.Roberto calls himself an "IT Craftsman." He likes to know how each thing works down to the tiniest detail. He's a father, husband and wonderful co-worker.  HIs clients have said, "Roberto's exceptional knowledge is only surpassed by his kindness and willingness to support others." My guest's passion lies in technology, Web 3, P2P,  Blockchain and so much more.    Roberto was so excited to join us and share stories of his mother Camilla who's mother was a Baroness and the title was eventually passed down to Camilla when her mother passed away. Roberto's parents were never physical when it came disciplining him. They were able to have conversations to clear any issues up. Often, Roberto's parents did his usual chores for him because it was just easier for them.  Unfortunately, that "hands off attitude," had a bit of a down side to Roberto's experience. Had Roberto  been accused of things, things he didn't do, his parents took other adult's word for truth and they never allowed Roberto to defend himself of any of these false accusations. He uses this experience as a big lesson especially in raising his own children. He's adamant about having these open and honest conversations with his children.  False accusations have a lasting effect on all of us, especially when you're a young child. He's still waiting to get an apology from the Boy Scout leader. One big surprise for my guest was that he never had any idea that his grandmother was a baroness. He had no idea that nobility was in his genes. It was lucky for Camilla's family, because there was wealth in the family and that allowed them access to food during WWII. Roberto says that it shaped his mother's personality. "She would never throw away one gram of leftover food and use it the next day."  Camilla wouldn't let anyone throw anything away, no waste, preserve everything. They enjoyed spending time enjoying simple things in life, like being out in nature and long bicycle rides in the mountains.Camilla grew up in the mainland of Venice, Italy. Both parents were into mathematics. Camilla continued her studies but didn't finish a degree. Shortly afterward she became a housewife and a full time mother. Many years later after her husband passed, Camilla became a tour guide and a teacher of English but Roberto says her English wasn't really that good so he was a little bit embarrassed.Roberto hasn't lived in Italy most of his life. He left at 18 years old and would return for holidays.  Since his mom died almost two two years ago, Roberto has stopped going to Italy for Christmas.Roberto says he owes a lot to his siblings  for taking care of their mom for so many years. According to Roberto, his mother would often start telling a very lengthy story so it would  take yet two more hours in order to leave her apartment. Roberto and his mother both have/had a fantastic sense of humor and always find ways to be happy in life.  She never really understood how Roberto could take care of himself and his businesses beginning at such a young age.Camilla had a remarkable intuitive ability to warn her son  not to get involved with certain businesses or with a particular person. She was often right. She even suggested that he marry a particular girlfriend years ago.  He didn't listen to his mother's advice and he definitely has regrets.linkedIn:RC10website:RCX.ITIf Roberto didn't work in computers and technology, he says he'd love to be a comedian.  Humor, laughter and happiness was a common theme for he and his mom. "It's the biggest medicine to smile and laugh" Roberto reflects. "Whatever I do, I have to do it with a smile and with a joke in the middle."   "Should Have Listened To My Mother" is an ongoing conversation about mothers/female role models and the roles they play in our lives. Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Joan Armatrading joins Nuala McGovern to discuss her 23rd studio album, How Did This Happen and What Does it Now Mean?Losing a baby in the early stages of pregnancy can be an extremely painful experience. Having to think about what you're going to tell your employer about why you're not able to come to work can compound the difficulty. In the UK you are not entitled to any time off work if you experience miscarriage in the first six months of pregnancy. But today, the Women and Equalities Select Committee is hearing evidence for the case of extending your right to bereavement leave to the first 24 weeks of pregnancy. Sarah Owen MP, Chair of that Committee is in the Woman's Hour studio.Baroness Lola Young of Hornsey has spent the last 20 years as an independent crossbench peer in the House of Lords, championing social justice causes such as the fight against modern slavery and promoting ethical fashion. She was also one of the first black women to enter the Lords. In her memoir Eight Weeks, she reflects on her childhood in the care system during the 1950s and 60s and the challenges she faced moving between foster care and children's homes, and what she learnt from accessing her care records some fifty years later. After writing her Spinal Column for the Times newspaper since 2010 – the first just two weeks after breaking her neck and back in a riding accident - columnist and author Melanie Reid has decided it's time to stop and has published the final one. She joins Nuala to discuss why she has made that decision and what her plans are now.Presenter: Nuala McGovern Producer: Kirsty Starkey
