Baroness Margaret Hodge joined Nuala McGovern to talk about why she thinks routine mammograms should be extended to women over 70. The former Labour MP was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 80. She requested a mammogram after realising she hadn't been invited to have one in nearly a decade. Routine screening is currently only available in the UK for women aged 50-70.Dame Imelda Staunton, of Vera Drake and Harry Potter fame, and her daughter Bessie Carter, of Bridgerton fame, are starring as mother and daughter in Mrs Warren's Profession by George Bernard Shaw, currently in the West End. The play explores the morals of earning money from prostitution. They joined Kylie Pentelow to talk about the relevance of the play today, and tell us what's it like acting on stage together for the first time in their careers. There are still more statues of men called John than of women in the UK. But this imbalance is being redressed, mainly thanks to local campaigns to memorialise more female figures. A new book, London's Statues of Women, documents all the current statues of, or to, women in the capital. Its author Juliet Rix joined Nuala along with Anya Pearson from Visible Women UK and Joy Battick who has been immortalised herself in bronze not once, but twice.Presenter: Kylie Pentelow Producer: Annette Wells Editor: Corinna Jones

As England's Lionesses prepare for their Euro 2025 semi-final with Italy tonight, their efforts have been overshadowed by the racial abuse suffered by defender Jess Carter. The team's decided not to take the knee against racism in tonight's game, with coach Sarina Wiegman saying her players feel the gesture isn't 'good enough.' Now the head of Sport England, Chris Boardman, has written to Ofcom to express "deep concern" over the abuse directed at England's women's football team on social media. He joins Nuala, along with former Lioness and now pundit Lianne Sanderson. Campaigners in Northern Ireland want the way Victim Personal Statements are dealt with in courts there to change. At the moment people do not have the automatic right to read their own statements as part of the judicial process. Nuala talks to Commissioner Designate for Victims of Crime Northern Ireland, Geraldine Hanna, and campaigner Julieanne Boyle, who didn't get the opportunity to address the court during her case and wants to see a change for other victims. Georgina Moore's second novel River of Stars is set in a floating community on the Thames. A romance and family saga spanning three generations of women, it was inspired by her own move from self-confessed ‘ageing party girl' to houseboat mum. Georgina joins Nuala in the Woman's Hour studio to talk about island life and writing on the water.Presenter: Nuala McGovern Producer: Sarah Jane Griffiths

‘War and conflict is not something that is not familiar to me. It is not an essay title, it is not a theoretical exercise. It's very real.' Campaigner Baroness Helic is the latest guest on Lord Speaker's Corner as she warns that society has become numb to sexual violence in war. Arminka Helic, Baroness Helic, campaigns to raise global awareness of rape as a war crime. Here she shares her extraordinary journey from fleeing the Bosnian war as a refugee to becoming special adviser to the then Foreign Secretary William Hague (now Lord Hague of Richmond) via a researcher job in the House of Commons library. ‘It's a weapon that is part of ethnic cleansing and genocide… Survivors are stigmatised. Perpetrators are not. That's what we have to flip. Some of the victims are as young as two months old. And the world does nothing. We have become globally desensitised.' While working for Lord Hague, she persuaded him to join forces with Angelina Jolie to highlight the proliferation of warzone sexual violence. The Hollywood actor and then UNHCR Special Envoy and actor had written, produced and directed a harrowing 2011 film ‘In the Land of Blood and Honey', which underscored the pervasive nature of sexual violence in war. Following this, the Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict Initiative (PSVI) was created, which has continued across multiple governments and is now supported by Labour minister and special envoy Lord Collins of Highbury. ‘I heard reports of some of my friends from school being detained in what became known as rape camps. We need to understand that war is not just about armies - it's about lives torn apart. Peace agreements don't end trauma.' In this episode, Baroness Helic warns that rising global conflict, weakened international institutions, and public desensitisation have dulled reactions to atrocities that once would have mobilised urgent action. She also discusses Israel/Gaza, and raises concerns about Russian influence in the Balkans, describing the region as a potential ‘second front' of destabilisation through proxy actors. 175. bölüm için özel konuğum, İngiltere siyasetinde bir ilki temsil eden, bir öncü: Baroness Meral Hussein-Ece. Kendisi, İngiltere Parlamentosu'nun üst kanadı olan House of Lords'a atanan ilk ve tek Türk. Yaptığı çalışmalarla, 2009'da Kraliçe Elizabeth tarafından Order of British Empire'a layık görülüyor, Baroness ünvanı veriliyor ve Hpuse of Lords'a atanıyor. The names in Fragile Wings suggest softness; tenuous and brittle. And there is desperation in “Hopeless Magic,” “Three-Headed Moth” and, of course, the album title. But the album is anything but fragile. A deft mixture of progressive, death, and post-metal, Australia's Cave Sermon delivers a rousing manifesto, in the same echelon as Deafheaven or Baroness, able to match impenetrable sludge with roaring beauty. We talked to Charlie Park on the Woodhouse.
Simon Marks sits in and is joined on Cross Question by Labour peer Baroness Berger, former Conservative defence minister Tobias Ellwood, campaigner Zoe Gardner and director of the Centre for Policy Studies think tank Robert Colvile.

Something has been bubbling up in me after watching a skit from Canada's Baroness von Sketch show a couple of years ago. In this sketch, they highlight how land acknowledgment without material giving can often feel performative or incomplete. So I decided to make a change in my own Canadian private practice. I have started donating a percentage of our monthly gross income to the Mi'kmaw Native Friendship Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia. In this episode, I'm sharing what “land tax” and “reparations” actually mean, why you may consider incorporating them into your private practice, and how you can start doing this in your practice or business. This may not be the whole answer, but it can be a meaningful step forward. In this episode: Putting my money where my mouth is What “land tax” and “reparations” actually mean Why you should consider donating How I make the donations in my private practice Putting my money where my mouth is It's one thing to say we care about something—but in a capitalist society, the reality is that money carries immense power. The good news is, we can choose to direct that power toward justice by being intentional about where and how we spend, invest, and give. The issues of land reparations have always been close to my heart, and I am glad that I have started to practice this value instead of only talking about it. What “land tax” and “reparations” actually mean Reparations refer to intentionally giving back or redistributing resources, often financial, to communities that have been harmed or dispossessed. In Canada's case, indigenous communities. Reparations are also not just symbolic, they are material, consistent acts of accountability due to past colonization, land theft, and systemic harm. Similarly, but distinct, land tax is a grassroots concept. It is not a government-enforced tax. Businesses and people can voluntarily donate money to indigenous communities, acknowledging that they are benefiting from living and working on indigenous land. Why you should consider donating Many people feel on the fence about contributing to something like land tax or reparations efforts because they believe that since they didn't personally steal the land, they shouldn't have to make amends for it. To be honest, this is something I've thought about too. But even then, I knew the way things were didn't sit right with me. Here's why you may want to consider paying land tax and reparations too: 1 - You are benefiting from stolen land ‘Even if you didn't take the land yourself, you are living and working on it. Land that was never sold or surrendered. That benefit: housing, business, income, stability, comes from a colonial system that displaced indigenous peoples.' - Jules Smith 2 - It's about responsibility, not guilt Land tax isn't about “feeling bad” or being blamed. It's about recognizing that we all have a role in repairing harm — especially if we benefit from systems that were built through dispossession. 3 - It supports indigenous-led solutions ‘Your contribution helps fund community programs, housing, food security, cultural revitalisation, and other essential work - led by indigenous people for indigenous people!' - Jules Smith 4 - It's a form of reparative justice because it is one small step in a larger process of reconciliation It's one small, material step in a larger process of reconciliation. Words and land acknowledgments are important, but they don't change material conditions. Consistent giving is a way to restore some measure of balance. How I make the donations in my private practice Each month, I head into my Jane App account and pull my monthly gross income report, which is created before business expenses are taken out. I calculate the percentage I have committed to donating, and then I e-transfer that amount directly to a donation center I have chosen to partner with. It is that simple! Many associate Lone Wolf with Gary Chalk's iconic art, as it was this art that launched the series and provided the lens through which we discovered Magnamund for the first time. Just as incredible, however, is the art of Brian Williams, who portrayed Magnamund for over ten years, from books 9 through 28. Today August and Jonathan honor Williams by examining the incredible evolution of his art as well as the transition from Chalk to Williams. Joining them is artist Justin Wyatt, known for his work on the anthology and upcoming Legends finale, and who brings years of professional training and experience to the examination of Williams style. We'll also dive into the secrets behind what makes a certain Baroness so appealing to the fan base!As mentioned in the episode, there is an interview with Gary Chalk which you can listen to here: Gary Chalk on Magnamund
