Count SUCKULA! Baroness in a slinky gown! Raising money for terrorism! Super fun episode, Dylan especially shines in this one
In this Climate Genn Episode I speak with the Former UK Green Party leader, baroness Natalie Bennett, who is currently sitting as a Green peer in the House of Lords. View more on https://genn.cc - become a member on patreon or Youtube for early episodes.Since the Greens scored a resounding win in the former Labour Stronghold of Gorton & Denton, many pundits and opposition party representatives have claimed that the Greens are embracing a form of Far-Leftwing populism, detracting from the Greens traditional focus on environmental issues. I asked Natalie if she would come on the podcast to clarify whether the Green's under Zac Polanski are a different party altogether, or whether the manifesto of decades past is still intact today.

This week I'm uncovering the real story of Micaela Leonarda Antonia de Almonester Rojas y de la Ronde, Baroness de Pontalba. And, yes, everyone in this story has a super long name! Micaela is best known for helping to transform New Orleans' Place d'Armes into the Jackson Square we know today. She designed and oversaw the construction of the iconic Pontalba Buildings that flank the sqaure in the heart of the New Orleans' historic French Quarter. As the wealthiest woman in New Orleans, this isn't too surprising. But Micaela's life wasn't all sunshine and roses. Join me to uncover her darkest moments and to squash some pretty far out myths. “He's looking at me…” Released on August 22, 1989, CLIMBIN' THE WALLS, the major label debut album from Martinsburg, West Virginia thrash metal savants WRATHCHILD AMERICA, is undoubtedly one of the most uniquely profound thrash metal albums in all of heavy metal history to be crafted by one of the most extraordinarily talented (and criminally underrated) bands in the entire genre. And to think, for many metalheads back in the day, their very first experience with this album was in a LIVE concert setting, opening for Testament. Just imagine how blessed one would be to see a band as unbelievable as WRATHCHILD AMERICA (for the very first time) opening for an established act like Testament and being completely blown away after just one show, having NEVER heard the album before getting to see them LIVE! “He's making eye contact…” With a stylistic palette that blends thrash, heavy metal, and 70's classic rock, there is absolutely NO ONE else in metal who sounds ANYTHING like them. And if you're jonesing to purchase a copy of CLIMBIN' THE WALLS, not to worry, because it was recently re-released (along with their second and final album, 3-D) as part of a two-CD package with a couple of bonus tracks. “Is he still lookin' at you?” Get ready for a trip back through time to the days of yore, when thrash was still riding high and the opening band for Testament absolutely blew the minds of everyone in attendance when you JOIN US for one of the greatest and most underrated metal albums of all time with WRATHCHILD AMERICA: CLIMBIN' THE WALLS. (Also, just in case you might be wondering, there's an early (we're talking “6 years ago, during the Hodges Era” early: 02/20/2020) episode appropriately dubbed WRATHSAZ, which is a combo episode featuring both WRATHCHILD AMERICA and the darker, groovier, heavier incarnation that followed, Souls At Zero.) Baroness Sharon Bowles, Member of the House of Lords, talked with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion about mounting concerns surrounding the Pension Schemes Bill and its proposed exclusion of listed investment companies from qualifying assets for DC default pension schemes. Bowles explained that the issue is not about existing rules, but a clause currently progressing through Parliament that would require certain pension schemes to invest in private assets only through non-listed vehicles. She warned that this approach ignores how markets operate in practice and risks distorting investment behaviour. The exclusion could affect investment in infrastructure projects such as wind farms, nuclear facilities like Sizewell, hospitals and schools. Bowles highlighted that listed investment companies have historically provided access to such assets while allowing liquidity for investors. As she put it, “It's a route that is very important because retail investors can also get a slice of the action.” Addressing concerns about risk, Bowles argued that underlying asset risk exists regardless of structure, stating, “I wouldn't say that one is more risky than the other. You've got different risks, and that's why they're actually rather complementary.” She also warned that excluding listed investment companies could remove potential cornerstone investors from IPOs and follow-on fundraisings, potentially damaging broader UK capital markets. Bowles criticised the lack of consultation and described the policy approach as “a slogan” rather than a reflection of market realities. Watch the full interview for detailed insight into the debate surrounding the Pension Schemes Bill and its potential market impact. After a short catch up between the hosts and Caitlin's Olympic coverage in The Scroll, Jann Arden welcomes special guests Meredith McNeil and Jennifer Whalen of CBC's Small Achievable Goals. They share their experiences with menopause and how they factored into the creation of their show. They compare stories that address the challenges of menopause and explore the cultural shifts surrounding women's voices and health discussions. They also discuss te impact of shame on their experiences, the current flourishing state of Canadian television, and the impact of Catherine O'Hara's legacy. Season two of Small Achievable Goals follows Julie Muldoon (Jennifer Whalen) and Kris Fine (Meredith MacNeill), two very different women navigating friendship and the hormonal hurricane of menopause while trying to keep their new podcast and their sanity intact. Life as the Podcast Folks have known it is upheaved under the ownership of Amanda King (Tamara Podemski) and the company culture of Queen of Kings. What started as a dream job for Kris and Julie quickly becomes a nightmare as they struggle to make an honest, raw and real show about menopause while attempting to navigate the change themselves. Jennifer Whalen is a writer, actor, improviser, and Showrunner. She is co-creator, writer and star of the comedy series Small Achievable Goals (CBC). She is also one fourth of Baroness von Sketch Show, as a co-creator, writer, star and showrunner of seasons four and five. Bonjour! Bienvenue à Renaissance France! (That means welcome to renaissance France in French!) (Also, no one speaks French in this movie except for "monsieur" and "madame"). We are discussing Ever After, a beautiful movie that flips the script on the classic fairytale trope way before its time. Danielle (or Daniella?) is a woman who don't need no man, and is more than willing to save the pouty prince in his castle. We get Leonardo di Vinci and his boat shoes playing the role of the fairy godmother, while the Baroness de Ghent (Anjelica Huston) SLAAAAYS as the evil step-mother. (I have been coaching Erin on Drag Queen terms) (Yeah, right!) We talk about so much from Henry XIII's divorces, Michelangelo painting the Sistine Chapel, to the anti-Pope and the Byzantine Empire (it was still the Roman Empire). We don't know how else to say it; we love this movie and every message it brings with it. Women are smart and powerful, the men need to stop moping and get to work, and we really want that painting of Drew Barrymore because it is actually a work of art.
It's been a trying week for the Prime Minister. Allegations surrounding Lord Peter Mandelson have angered many within the party, and raised fresh questions about Keir Starmer's authority. This week on The Whiskey Trip Podcast, Big Chief sits down with April Weller Cantrell, widely known throughout the whiskey world as The Bourbon Baroness. A trusted voice in American whiskey and one of Big Chief's closest confidants in the industry, April brings experience, perspective, and straight shooting honesty to a conversation that is honest and deep, rooted in respect for the craft and the people behind it. In the first half of the show, Big Chief pours the new Shiner Texas Bourbon from K. Spoetzl Distillery. This single barrel release at 112 proof showcases bold Texas character and opens the door to a thoughtful discussion on grain, climate driven maturation, and where Texas bourbon fits within the broader American whiskey conversation. The second half sees the glasses change. Big Chief sips on Sazerac Rye Full Proof, digging into high proof rye spice, structure, and intensity, even hinting that this pour may have the chops to compete as a Whiskey of the Year contender. Alongside him, the Baroness pours Shakertown Spirits whiskey, offering a heritage driven counterpoint that deepens the conversation around balance, tradition, and thoughtful production. As always, this episode goes beyond tasting notes. It is about truth, perspective, and supporting the people building American whiskey the right way. At its heart, this conversation is a reminder to slow down, be present, and appreciate the moment. A shared pour becomes a pause, a reflection, and a quiet connection to something greater than ourselves. Pour a glass, settle in, and take the ride with Big Chief and the Baroness. Cheers

Alex Forsyth presents political debate from M Shed, Bristol.
In 2011, John Dyer Baizley put to pen to paper and started working on lyrics for what would be Baroness' 3rd album, Yellow & Green, with drummer Allen Blickle and guitarist Pete Adams. The themes were of addiction and loss and what happens when you live beyond the traumas of your life and decide to keep on going. It's a redemption arc that starts with great loss, and it became oddly prophetic. Of the songs that were written, none were as prophetic as their lead single "Take My Bones Away". In it, he seems to be pleading with an otherworldly power to take away his bones. Then, during their promotional tour for the album tragedy struck, as their tour bus crashed and plummeted 40 feet. While there were no casualties, there were many injuries, including a broken arm and leg on John's left side, likely needing rods and screws to recover. Did an otherworldly entity hear his cry and deliver him a cosmic joke? Who knows... But this is one hell of an album. The Newsmongers unfolds the seedy history of tabloid journalism, from the first printed ‘Strange Newes' sheets of the sixteenth century to the sensationalism of today's digital age. The narrative weaves from Regency gossip writers through New York's ‘yellow journalism' battles to the ‘sex and sleaze' Sun of the 1970s; and from the Brexit-backing populism of the Daily Mail to the celebrity-obsessed Mail Online of the 2000s. Colourful figures such as Daniel Defoe, Lord Northcliffe, Hugh Cudlipp, Rupert Murdoch and Robert Maxwell are brought to vivid life. From scandalous confessions to the Leveson Inquiry, the book explores journalists' unscrupulous methods, taking in phone hacking, privacy breaches and bribery. In the digital era, popular journalism succumbed to ‘churnalism' while a certain royal is seeking revenge on the tabloids today. Terry Kirby is Senior Lecturer in Journalism at Goldsmiths, University of London, and author of The Trials of the Baroness (1991). He has been a journalist for more than four decades and was a founder member of staff at The Independent, where he worked for more than twenty years in a number of roles, including crime correspondent, night editor and chief reporter Morteza Hajizadeh is a Ph.D. graduate in English from the University of Auckland in New Zealand. We're joined by prominent human rights activist and barrister, Baroness Shami Chakrabarti, someone who barely needs an introduction owing to the many high profile roles and cases that she's undertaken in her career - a true world-leading figure in human rights and law. We discuss the creation and inception of the highly controversial Covert Human Intelligence Sources Act (CHIS Act), a law which gives immunity to agents of the state, as well as the growth of 'child spies'. There's a great deal to unpick in this discussion and we're lucky that Baroness Shami is able to walk us through it. Shami and a collection of UK politicians went above and beyond in attempts to water this bill down, and it is now an act, making it an official law. It's been described a 'dystopian'. So what's the story? We're also joined by Neil Woods, many regular podcast listeners will know Neil, he's a former undercover operative who now advocates for a raft of reforms in efforts to make our communities fairer and safer. Neil also took part in the CHIS Act discussions and briefings, so we get to hear from both Shami and Neil about the backstory and ultimately what this now all means. Please follow Law Enforcement Action Partnership across the globe and subscribe and share this podcast where you can. With appreciation form us all! Hosted on Acast. This week we are giving a cheers to ten years! Join us as we celebrate the anniversary of the Old Smyrna Firehouse (InObscuria and Captain Content HQ). We get the inside scoop from the man himself on how this relic of a building was brought back to life to all of its firehouse glory and beyond. The building is not only Robert's home, but it is also an exhibit within the community and is utilized for private events, weddings, photoshoots, TV commercials, and feature-length films. Oh, and it's where we record the show every week! We celebrate by listening to songs that will get you fired up and leave you with a burning sensation! What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show, Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. Robert is forced to test his endurance and provide feedback, as he has no idea what he will be subjected to every week. We hope that we turn you on to something that was lost on your ears, or something you've simply forgotten about, or that (in our opinion) should have been the next big thing.Songs this week include:Warrior Soul – “Firehouse” from Cocaine & Other Good Stuff (2020)Mother's Finest – “Fire” from Mother's Finest (1976)The Front – “Fire” from The Front (1989)Mind Funk – “Fire” from Mind Funk (1991)The Music – “Fire” from Strength In Numbers (2008)Torche – “Fire” from Torche (2005)Bruce Dickinson – “Fire” from Balls To Picasso (1994)Ozzy Osbourne – “Fire” from Under Cover (2005)Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/https://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it: InObscuria StoreIf you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/Check out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/
