Lily Mandelbaum and Elisa Goodkind get people to undress in front of their camera for a living. They themselves have undressed, together, in front of a camera. But it's not like anything else you've ever experienced. Lily and Elisa created Style Like U, a website that eventually became a very successful YouTube channel, to challenge the stereotypes, myths and misconceptions we have about style and beauty. They ask their guests to start fully clothed and as the interview progresses the guests disrobe, and as they disrobe the guests often reveal their most intimate and honest thoughts. The results are raw, revelatory and completely inspiring. One of their series covered birth and postpartum where they talked to parents who have had experiences that aren't often talked about - stories about still birth, being a transdad, surrogacy and more. In this interview Lily and Elisa talk about what they have learnt through their many years working together and interviewing such an incredible array of inspiring people. In the run-up to Mother’s Day Weekend, the irrepressibly unapologetic Elisa Goodkind switches things up by placing the emphasis on celebrating children and acknowledging her self-perceived failures. She shows us that by embracing our failures, be it in parenting, career, love, or life in general, we also embrace our reinvention. Refusing to be invisible at any age, Elisa’s tales take us from her time as a stylist in wild 80s New York, to a yoga teaching mother, to risking it all at 50 and going into business with her daughter.
Welcome to episode 1 of What’s Underneath. Each week Elisa Goodkind & Lily Mandelbaum will be facilitating facade-free interviews with diverse non-conformists about their relationship to style, self-image, and identity, expanding the kinds of unfiltered dialogue they’ve been having in their viral YouTube video series, The What’s Underneath Project. Before they begin interviewing others and asking them to be vulnerable, Elisa & Lily have decided to start by walking the walk and interviewing one another. In this week's episode, Lily gets real about control, the business side of StyleLikeU, her borderline nervous breakdown earlier this year, the challenges of developing an authentic voice on social media, and healing her relationship with her body over the last decade.
What’s Underneath is shedding the binds of cultural conditioning placed on us with regards to how we present ourselves to the world, each episode inspires radical self-acceptance by empowering you to embrace what’s unrepeatable in you. This CastBox Original, produced with Studio71, is hosted by StyleLikeU’s mother-daughter duo, Elisa Goodkind & Lily Mandelbaum, and will bring you intimate conversations with diverse individuals sharing honest and cathartic stories about style, self-image and identity. Welcome to the Self-Acceptance Revolution.
Today’s episode is all about finding comfort in our own skins and embracing the things that make us uniquely beautiful. Here to inspire us are the mother-daughter duo behind StyleLikeU, Elisa Goodkind and Lily Mandelbaum. StyleLikeU was born when Elisa — a former fashion stylist frustrated with the industry — noticed Lily, her teenage daughter, struggling with her body image. Together they decided to create an alternative to the unattainable status quo, launching StyleLikeU in 2009 with their “Closet” series, and “The What’s Underneath Project” in 2014, both aimed at demonstrating that true beauty and style are the unique result of loving the skins we’re in. In this episode, we get a peek at Elisa and Lily’s emotional journey with StyleLikeU, and dig deep into some of the big issues surrounding our relationship with fashion, and ultimately with ourselves. Their ultimate dream? To see people accept themselves and have fun with clothing, to awaken each of us to our own potential for creativity and self-expression. From the transformation of style over the last 30 years to the insidious efforts of the fashion industry, the pros and cons of social media as a platform to the transformational power of an interview, this is one conversation you won’t want to miss. More Radical Lessons in this episode: — In the 80s and 90s people felt freer to stand out from the crowd; now, corporations and marketing preys on our lowest common denominator, feeding our fears of being othered. — We need to awaken to the fact that our slow “forgetting” of self-expression is not superficial, it’s deep; creativity demands uniqueness and authenticity. — People don’t even realize that they don’t love themselves as much as they could. — Social media has a lot of problems, but it also gives a voice to niche and marginalized communities who would have been shutout in the era when magazines dictated everything. — The journey is very important. You need time to feel someone’s transformation and catharsis and have a meaningful experience with it. — The interview process can be cathartic; it’s a sacred time and space to share yourself, and fall in love with each other. — Capitalism on steroids has created a standard of beauty that really literally almost no one can fit into. It’s an avatar. — The most beautiful and inspiring people are the ones who embrace the thing about themselves that culture at large tells them to reject. — Dressing yourself is about wanting to be conscious. It’s a very instinctual thing, but we’re so distanced from our instincts, people hardly know what they are anymore. Links! Samantha Paige met Lily Mandelbaum and Elisa Goodkind, the creators of Style Like U, at their “True Style is What’s Underneath: The Self-Acceptance Revolution” book signing in Los Angeles. Just weeks later, Lily and Elisa interviewed Paige for their Dispelling Beauty Myths video series with Allure magazine in New York. In this interview, Paige was excited to switch roles and ask the mother-daughter duo powerful questions about their lives. They touch upon life before Style Like U, the last cuts they made to step into this creative endeavor, where they find inspiration for and connection to their work and how they stay open and vulnerable to and during this transformative process. These two women share eloquently and openly about the importance of redefining individuality, the value of staying true to oneself in spite of society’s homogenizing messages and the deep connection all beings share. In the same vulnerable spirit of the intimate docu-style video portraits of Style Like U, Mandelbaum and Goodkind open up with Paige about the importance of always going deeper within oneself in order to make a bolder contribution in the world. Untamed Podcast: Wildly Disrupting the Dialogue on Food, Body and Womxnhood
Welcome to Episode 14 of the Untamed Podcast with guests Elisa Goodkind and Lily Mandelbaum of StyleLikeU. Elisa Goodkind was a fashion stylist working for top fashion magazines and celebrities. After twenty years in the business, she was frustrated by how the industry, which had once been a home to artistry and rebellion, had become about selling status, conformity and increasingly formulaic ideals of beauty. At the same time, Elisa’s daughter, Lily Mandelbaum, was a teenager struggling deeply with her body image. In an oversaturated media culture dominated by models who looked nothing like her, she was consumed with trying to change herself physically in order to be and look like someone else. Thus, StyleLikeU was born, a multimedia company, founded by mother-daughter... The post UNTAMED 014: On Style + What’s Underneath with Elisa Goodkind and Lily Mandelbaum appeared first on LU|EATS.
Elisa Goodkind and Lily Mandelbaum are the co-founders of StyleLikeU, a company that creates the documentary-style video series “What's Underneath” that explores how style is not about trends, money, or presenting a facade of photoshopped perfection. Rather, true style is the result of radical self-acceptance. In this episode, Elisa and Lily — who are mother and daughter — share how and why they started StyleLikeU in 2009, and how it has evolved from an idea to a video series that has been viewed over 35 million times, and from a book to a movement. Today, Elisa and Lily have interviewed hundreds of people about their unique perspectives on style and identity — a perspective that is quite different from the one portrayed by today's fashion industry and the media.
