Welcome to a brand new episode of the ¿Quién Tú Eres? podcast, where we explore the conflict we often face between "professionalism" & being our authentic selves. This week's guest is Mag Rodriguez. Mag is the founder of EVEN. It's a creative platform that enables artists to sell their music directly to fans. In the first month on EVEN LaRussell generated $100K in revenue with the support of 4,000 fans. Artists on EVEN include French Montana, Jidenna, Omarion, LaRussell, Kota the Friend, Ransom, 38 Spesh, and many others.  Mag founded the platform last year to help black and brown artists retain equity in their creative work. EVEN is a way for fans to connect directly with their favorite artists, and it's also an opportunity for the artists to monetize to take a bit more control over the monetization strategy compared to streaming - which is often criticized for not giving artists a quality cut of the revenue. This week Mag Rodriguez tells us all about his journey through the music industry and his experience as an entrepreneur. Having started his music management career while he was still in high school, he has learned a ton of lessons on the way. And while he feels like he's gotten wiser as he's gotten older, he still takes tips from his younger, more rebellious self. In this episode of the One More Time Podcast, Kelechi talks about winning a Mountain Dew contest that changed his life, hip-hop and Afrobeats genres blending, going home to Nigeria for the first time, supporting Jidenna on a national tour, and more! Kelechi is a first-generation American artist born to Nigerian parents.  Starting out as a Christian rapper named Submit, he rebranded to his government name Kelechi after realizing his music was becoming increasingly autobiographical. He won $50,000 and support for his album "Before the Quarter" by winning a contest sponsored by Mountain Dew. With features from BJ the Chicago Kid, Trinidad James, K Camp and Phay, almost every single release was getting playlisted. He built a successful music business from there with recording / mix engineering added to a resume of well received records and tour support for artists like Wale, Chance the Rapper and Jidenna. After 10 years of pure rap, Kelechi has embraced a new sound leaning into the Afrobeats / Afropop genres and is feeling almost like a brand new artist. In this episode, we talk with hip hop journalist and former editor in chief of Hip Hop DX Justine Hunte. Justin has been telling the story of life through the lens of hip hop for years, but oddly enough journalism wasn't his first career, Justin began his career in the world of finance and wore a suit to work every single day. Though he left the suit and tie behind when he crossed the rubicon to hip hop journalism, he has always taken notice of the way style and fashion interweave with the art and culture of hip hop. From JayZ and Puffy with their sartorial menswear approach, Black Thought and Kendrick Lamar with their effortless style, or A$AP Rocky and Future with their more fashion-forward wears, even Jidenna with his sartorial elegance, menswear and hip-hop are tied at the hip. Justin takes the time to dive in with us and explore how the two worlds come together. On this episode, the wise guys get into a quick rhyming battle competition, discuss their failed Popeye's chicken sandwich scavenger hunt, then discuss if it's possible for Chic-Fil-A's chicken sandwich to be dethroned! This is followed by an extended digression laced convo surrounding woman and food topics that could come up. You'll like this :) .then the new music reviews begin! Did you know who SAINt JHN was prior to him dropping ‘Ghetto Lenny's Love Songs'? If not, we think you'll be blown away! (10:50). Will all the real weirdo rap BROCKHAMPTON fans please stand up! They just dropped a new album called ‘GINGER' (19:34). Jeezy's underachieving, yet successful music career may have officially come to an end after dropping his ‘TM104: Legend of the Snowman' (28:10). Then a VERY HEATED discussion ensues when the topic of Jidenna's new ‘85 To Africa' album comes up!!! (40:32). Should Rapsody's dedication to black women laced album called ‘EVE' be her big break into the mainstream? (60:15). Could the conforming of the music on ‘So Much Fun' really lead to unseen success for Young Thug? (62:30). Lastly, Sway Lee drops off a very lazy effort with his new song ‘Won't Be Late' feat. Drake! (70:53). ill-advised thoughts - QD: Shawn Mendes racial insensitive comments and why our society needs to be more forgiving (73:18). We kick off the show with stories from hocking hills, hot tubs, a bit of gambling and a cocktail contest. From there we are joined by two friends, Greg and Cindy, who have been show regulars over the years and discuss restarting lives (with a bit of rum on the side). Next, we sit down with a very interesting beer and ramble on in many conversational directions. It only gets more far reaching as we turn to a bit of music from Jidenna that's been on Charlie's mind this week. It's a longer episode, but when a conversation with friends gets interesting, you really don't want to turn off the mics do you?
