When you think about fashion and style, many things may come to mind - maybe you love shopping and embracing different styles or maybe you loathe the idea of standing in front of a mirror trying something new. But fashion is so much more than choosing the right clothes. It's about curating your life's preferences, needs and desires. This week, Ashley is joined by the creator of the Somatic Dressing Method, Carrie Montgomery. Carrie believes when women untether their beauty, they can change the world and the Somatic Dressing Method is a way of getting dressed that leaves you feeling empowered and ready to bring on whatever the day brings. It's taking style beyond the layers of clothing and feeling empowered in your whole being. In this episode, Carrie and Ashley discuss Carrie's journey and how she came to create her unique offerings, how to make aesthetic choices based on your energy, finding peace and acceptance when it comes to body image, going beyond performance when it comes to style, fast fashion, capsule wardrobes (and why it may be good in theory but doesn't necessarily work for everyone), style archetypes, and more. Wherever you are on your journey right now, Carrie welcomes others to have fun in finding their true style. Fashion is a form of communication, a visual representation of who you are, and a feeling that speaks for itself. Style comes from knowing yourself and what feels beautiful to you. It is a visual representation of who you are. Bruce Boyer has been commissioning suits, jackets and trousers from London's famed tailoring house Anderson & Sheppard for over four decades. In that time, he has gotten to know the house, and its cutters and tailors, quite well. www.thehogtownrake.com
Bruce and I both have a long relationship with the Italian mill VBC, as journalists, collaborators and friends. In this special episode, Bruce shares his experiences with the maker, their mill and their creative director. www.thehogtownrake.com
Bruce has sported a beard since the 1960s and he explains how that gives him more in common with the counter-culture than you would have thought. Plus, an excerpt of Bruce's thoughts from "The Problem with Jeans" documentary. www.thehogtownrake.com
Almost fifty years ago, Bruce Boyer left the world of academia to pursue a career in menswear writing and journalism. Since that time, he's witnessed the fashion magazine industry change from an editorial focus to an "advertorial" one. But he never lost his passion for exploring what and why we wear what we wear. www.thehogtownrake.com
Bruce Boyer has worked with an awful lot of craftspeople over the last sixty years. Some, as a customer or collaborator. Some, as a journalist and documentarian. And almost all, as a friend and fellow sartorialist. He's been lucky enough to hear stories and share moments in workshops and cutting rooms that he wouldn’t have otherwise. But it isn’t just great memories, it’s also great lessons. www.thehogtownrake.com
Bruce's recommendations for Gary Cooper movies that feature him at the height of sophistication are: "Devil and the Deep" (1932), "Now and Forever" (1934), "The General Died at Dawn" (1936), "Desire" (1936), and "Bluebeard's Eighth Wife" (1938). For more about this series visit www.thehogtownrake.com
Throughout his life, Bruce has witnessed the rise of Italian Style, starting with post-war cinema and early "Made in Italy" fashions and culminating with the generations of craftspeople he has met. All of which has inspired his own approach to style. Not to mention one of the most used terms in the menswear vocabulary. www.thehogtownrake.com
Bruce Boyer has been visiting London's Savile Row - the birthplace of tailoring - for almost sixty years. He shares stories of some of the tailors he's met along the way and what they revealed about this august and esoteric world. www.thehogtownrake.com

Samantha Paige met Lily Mandelbaum and Elisa Goodkind, the creators of Style Like U, at their “True Style is What’s Underneath: The Self-Acceptance Revolution” book signing in Los Angeles. Just weeks later, Lily and Elisa interviewed Paige for their Dispelling Beauty Myths video series with Allure magazine in New York. In this interview, Paige was excited to switch roles and ask the mother-daughter duo powerful questions about their lives. They touch upon life before Style Like U, the last cuts they made to step into this creative endeavor, where they find inspiration for and connection to their work and how they stay open and vulnerable to and during this transformative process. These two women share eloquently and openly about the importance of redefining individuality, the value of staying true to oneself in spite of society’s homogenizing messages and the deep connection all beings share. In the same vulnerable spirit of the intimate docu-style video portraits of Style Like U, Mandelbaum and Goodkind open up with Paige about the importance of always going deeper within oneself in order to make a bolder contribution in the world. To connect with Lily Mandelbaum and Elisa Goodkind and discover more about Style Like U, please visit stylelikeu.com, Style Like U on YouTube and @stylelikeu on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.
Hands up who’s over the narrow view of beauty peddled by mainstream fashion brands and media! Elisa Goodkind wants us to take back our power from magazines, advertising and the money-driven global fashion business, so that getting dressed each day becomes an act of self-love. With their platform StyleLikeU New Yorkers Elisa and her daughter Lily Mandelbaum are breaking down the fake stereotypes about what’s beautiful, and what’s supposedly not. They’ve published a new booked called True Style is What's Underneath: The Self-Acceptance Revolution. They take their message on the road, holding open castings and talks around the world. And they make intimate documentary-style video portraits that “explore how style is not about trends, money or presenting a façade of photoshopped perfection”. No wonder these videos have gone viral – with over 35 million views. What comes across more than anything when you watch them is how we are all the same in our difference. Elisa Goodkind and Lily Mandelbaum are the co-founders of StyleLikeU, a company that creates the documentary-style video series “What's Underneath” that explores how style is not about trends, money, or presenting a facade of photoshopped perfection. Rather, true style is the result of radical self-acceptance. In this episode, Elisa and Lily — who are mother and daughter — share how and why they started StyleLikeU in 2009, and how it has evolved from an idea to a video series that has been viewed over 35 million times, and from a book to a movement. Today, Elisa and Lily have interviewed hundreds of people about their unique perspectives on style and identity — a perspective that is quite different from the one portrayed by today's fashion industry and the media. The Simple Sophisticate - Intelligent Living Paired with Signature Style
~The Simple Sophisticate, episode #149 ~Subscribe to The Simple Sophisticate: iTunes | Stitcher | iHeartRadio "What's true style? Knowing how to mix the right combinations of ingredients." —Ines de la Fressange, author of Parisian Chic Look Book: What Should I Wear Today? Most of us have heard of and are incorporating into our lives a capsule wardrobe, but as much as we'd love to hire a stylist to tell us what to wear every day and how to style the clothes we've invested in, we either absolutely cannot afford such an extravagance or well, let's get serious. But the truth is, we can do it ourselves. Understanding how to cultivate true style into our lives throughout the entire year is completely possible so long as we learn the necessary tools and fail-safe combinations. Former Chanel model and the epitome of Parisian chic Ines de la Fressange has just released her new book to follow up her wildly successful first Parisian Chic, and in it she does the work of the stylist. Parisian Chic Look Book: What Should I Wear Today? does everything for you except the shopping. With nearly every page in the 130 page book filled with styled outfits and noted for which occasion they would be perfect for, this look book is your guide when you step into your closet. This look book is the finishing touch to building your confidence that you do know how to dress well without having too many clothes to choose from and feeling you have nothing to wear. What I would like to do today is share a glimpse of Ines' suggestions and my favorite outfits, and then I highly recommend you pick up or check out this book. If you are someone who appreciates the classic Parisian chic approach to style, if you adhere to a capsule wardrobe approach and if you want to keep it simple but mix high and low items ensuring you look effortlessly style, take a look inside the book and discover how to become the stylist you've always wanted to hire. 1. Stock your closet with the essentials capsule wardrobe essentials handbags shoes jewelry lingerie outerwear scarves belts Often we have almost everything we need but a few finishing touches are missing. Take a look at her detailed list (above are just the categories) and find what you may need or what to look for the next time you are shopping or a wonderful sale on your favorite designer clothing or accessories offers a beautiful price. 2. Stick to a dress code unique to each general occasion business beyond the uniform that works for you, how to choose an outfit that transitions from one work place to another business appointment (applying for a loan, a business dinner, etc.) "I Have a Tricky Day Ahead" silk print pants v-neck sweater black velvet flats classic watch bangles family gatherings lunch with a family member, a great aunt perhaps? high waisted pants ruffled or signature blouse pendant necklace high heels or platforms a scarf as a belt personal get-togethers a dinner with an old flame over-the-knee pencil skirt velvet jacket camisole heels classic watch evening attire Dinner at Home with Friends blue jeans white blouse black belt gold bangles black velvet flats vacation airport attire stylish sweatpants t-shirt v-neck sweater (oversized) flat slide sandals navy men's overcoat special, unique occasions museum buff black midi, (perhaps body-con) dress denim jacket lace up sneakers saddle bag bracelets 3. Stick to neutrals One common thread I noticed through all of the items Ines suggests is a neutral color palette. Black, navy, white, khaki/biege, gray, light blue, stripes. While there were a few signature pieces, a sequin gold camisole, printed silk pants, a hot pink sweater and a red saddle purse, these boisterous colors were few, but powerful. The mixing and matching becomes easier when you adhere to a neutral palette that complements your skin tone. Don't deviate from this. For example, the pop of color I often choose is blush pink: my skin instantly looks more bronzed and healthy and it pairs well with everything else in my closet depending upon the season and occasion. Other than that its navy, gray, black, white, stripes and light blue. 4. Finish with few accessories, but don't forget them Each of her looks as you pour through the book reveal typically one piece of jewelry being worn if any and an expected, but signature tote, coat or pair of shoes. 5. Purchase well and don't fuss The key with Parisian chic style is mixing the high and low: a beautiful white silk blouse from Saint Laurent paired with classic denim jeans and costume jewelry bangles. Knowing what you are wearing looks well on your physique will enabled you to say no to extra details and finish with just the right amount of detail. Then once it all comes together, you can relax and enjoy wherever you are headed. 6. Learn the fashion style tricks wear a khaki military jacket over a little black dress wear a rock t-shirt with a pencil skirt buy clothes in the men's department A sampling of items that what works for me: jumpsuit denim jacket pencil skirts simple black dress long shirt dress black/navy v-neck sweater black/white t-shirt navy blazer trench coat blue jeans slip-on sneakers wellies (farm/ranch boots) black tote classic watch brown/black belt camisoles black panties black bra men's camel coat (I actually wear a woman's but it is one size too large) Ultimately, seeing how to pull something together, seeing it on a model is a useful visual we often do not see when it comes to basics and not all in one place. Covered in gold that shimmers, the book will be easy to spot on the shelf as you look to use it again and again and again until these classic ensembles become engrained in your memory. THe most significant take-away for me was a sigh of relief when I saw the outfits. The number of items involved were minimal, the key was quality items paired with finishing touches that worked with the woman's body and the other neutral pieces. So start with #1, begin to build the foundation which is the necessary clothing and then have fun and look forward to stepping into your closet again. Today’s Guest I first met today's guest via the fabulous Catherine Watkin, who we discuss in this episode. I really love Helen's approach to style, and how she works to help women find their own true style, rather than arbitrarily assigning them one. She's got a very holistic five step approach to what she does, and we discuss this in the episode. For twelve years, Helen Reynolds has been helping people to improve their professional image and personal confidence. She has a degree in Business Administration and languages, and worked for many years in a corporate environment for The National Magazine Company (now Hearst Magazines) working on brands such as Harpers Bazaar, Country Living, Good Housekeeping and Cosmopolitan. She undertook her image analysis training with Carol Goodsman of Image Professional and set up her first image business, StyleStep, in 2009. After helping hundreds of women to make changes to their image, she spotted a need for a discreet, personal, in-depth service for busy business women who need the stress taken out of their wardrobe management. She then re-branded and now operates under her own name, offering an exclusive high-end service. Helen offers her services to successful female business owners that have neither the time nor the confidence to shop for clothes. She helps them to build a wardrobe full of fabulous clothes that they look forward to wearing and that make them feel great. This makes it easier for them to attract the right kind of people into their lives and businesses. Her motivation comes from seeing the great changes in confidence in her clients. When they wear clothes that “love them back”, they walk tall and exude confidence. What You’ll Learn Helen's five step system to style. How finding your style can actually help your business grow. Did you know that clothes can love you back? Learn what this means. How to find the right image consultant for you. One easy action step you can take away to feel better TODAY about your style.
