He warns the “rabid dog” regime remains a paused but persistent danger.Doran also unpacks how China is using the Middle East as a laboratory to test how America defends against missiles and drones before any move on Taiwan. He warns that anti-ship ballistic missiles supplied to Iran and the Houthis exist for one purpose: sinking American aircraft carriers.Michael Doran is a Senior Fellow at the Hudson Institute and director of its Center for Peace and Security in the Middle East. Nick Wize spends the day making the case that Baker Mayfield has earned every penny of a franchise quarterback contract after producing like one of the NFL's elite since arriving in Tampa on a prove-it deal, explaining why the Buccaneers would be foolish to gamble on another quarterback through the draft or free agency. Nick discusses Baker publicly supporting Vita Vea, the potential locker-room ramifications of the contract standoff, and why any future Buccaneers head coach would view Baker as a major asset—not someone to replace. The show also dives into the Rays' trade deadline strategy, speculation surrounding Casey Mize, whether Tampa Bay should sacrifice top prospects in pursuit of a World Series, listener reactions to "going all in," and why Jim Bowden believes the Rays' small-market model could help shape baseball's future ahead of the 2027 season. Plus, Nick and Producer Tim react to the Saints' Chris Olave extension timing, Curt Cignetti's latest shots at the SEC, and plenty of passionate listener texts throughout the show.
If you think the war is basically over because someone said Iran was “decimated,” slow down and do the math. We bring back author and longtime war and strategy teacher Michael Vlahos to dissect the claims coming out of Washington, including a clip of the Secretary of War projecting confidence about Iranian losses and U.S. stockpiles. Then we translate the language of victory into capabilities, inventories, and what actually changes on the battlefield. We dig into the shock factor that keeps showing up in this conflict: Iran's growing missile accuracy. Michael explains why guidance systems and satellite navigation matter, how China's BeiDou GPS alternative can tighten missile impact to a few meters, and why that precision turns U.S. bases and high-value assets into far riskier bets. From there we tackle the uncomfortable question everyone avoids: how much help might Russia and China provide, from components and air defense support to quieter forms of intelligence and targeting assistance. The second half gets brutally practical about sustainability. We talk munitions stockpiles, interceptor burn rates, and the limits of “we'll just build more,” plus why cheap guided bombs are not a cure if air defenses block access and key sites are deeply buried. We also challenge the assumption that the U.S. Navy can simply blockade its way to leverage, laying out fleet size realities, carrier deployment strain, shipyard bottlenecks, and the incentives inside the military industrial complex. The stakes are not just military; we connect the Strait of Hormuz to oil prices, diesel supply, fertilizer, and potential food shocks. This week, we're joined by Only Scrans — one of the UK's biggest and most engaged food creators, with more than 1.5 million followers and one of the most unusual career stories we've encountered. Jonny has toured the world as a guitarist, helped build LADbible's audience past 100 million, launched FoodBible, worked with some of Britain's biggest celebrities, built his own agencies and turned Only Scrans into a major food platform. Most recently, he has taken the ultimate step from commenting on hospitality to living it, opening his own sports bar and discovering exactly how difficult it is to make money from bricks and mortar.Jonny reveals why he spent £40,000 of his own money filming a huge long-form YouTube series across America, Canada and Mexico, visiting historic restaurants, Texas barbecue institutions and some of the world's greatest taco spots. He explains why he refused to compromise the films with intrusive sponsorship demands, why he believes creators must be prepared to invest in themselves and how YouTube videos can suddenly return from the dead and collect another 100,000 views. He also takes us inside the obsessive world of retention graphs, thumbnails, titles and trial reels — while sharing the less glamorous reality of eating at 20 restaurants in a matter of days, including a disastrous final day in Mexico City after weeks of grasshoppers, tripe tacos and relentless filming. We also get into Jonny's belief that food influencers should have to pass a test before they are allowed to review restaurants. He explains why somebody tasting their first-ever scallop has no business immediately declaring it a ten out of ten, calls out creators who deliberately attack brilliant independent restaurants to manufacture millions of views and comes to the defence of Bleecker after watching it receive a baffling six-out-of-ten review. At the same time, he acknowledges the extraordinary impact creators such as Eating With Tod can have on small businesses, explains why TopJaw's combination of beautiful filmmaking and a divisive presenter works so well, and gives his verdict on the recent “shawarma wars” consuming the online food world.Jonny is equally candid about opening his sports bar, GO. The venue turned over £1 million in its first year, but he explains why that impressive figure looks very different once the money has gone back out again — leaving a profit of roughly ten per cent and nothing yet taken by Jonny personally. He recounts discovering chaotic wiring hidden above the ceiling, air-conditioning containing an illegal refrigerant and renovation costs that more than doubled almost overnight. Despite the financial pressure, he describes the extraordinary feeling of watching supporters stand on tables during England games, the pride of creating memories for customers and his ambition to expand the business rather than simply take the money. Finally, Jonny takes us back to his previous life in major-label rock band Blitz Kids. He reveals how the band could appear glamorous from the outside while its members were living on riders, drinking from morning until night and earning almost nothing, leaving him with memories of touring Helsinki, Stockholm and the rest of the world that he can barely recall. He speaks openly about alcohol, reaching a dark point and eventually becoming sober in his late thirties — before realising that he genuinely did still love food and football without the drinking attached. We then hear how he walked away from the band while living in his mum's attic, joined LADbible as its eighth or ninth employee after an interview involving FIFA and several beers, created a viral livestream by melting ice lollies on a roof, used audience data to inform campaigns involving Craig David, and later found himself writing viral social posts for Georgia Toffolo. An extraordinary conversation about food, risk, addiction, creativity, hospitality and understanding what makes the internet click. You can book a virtual demonstration with Quooker to find the right setup for your kitchen and remember, until the end of August, if you use the code GO TO FOOD, you'll get free installation and a free Quooker glassware set. Robert Saleh is reportedly predicting that Tennessee will beat the Jets in Week 1, and Evan Roberts, Tiki Barber and Shaun Morash immediately turn his trash talk into bulletin-board material. With Garrett Wilson preparing to catch passes from yet another quarterback and Cade Klubnik already generating training camp buzz, the Jets' endless search for stability remains impossible to ignore. The bigger concern is Aaron Glenn's defense. Eight new starters, questions about the overall talent and Glenn taking over the play-calling create enormous pressure for a team that may finally have enough offensive weapons to surprise people. The conversation then turns to a franchise-changing possibility: abandoning the rookie-quarterback cycle and pursuing Baker Mayfield if he ever becomes available.
You have not heard it all, contrary to the American colloquialism "Now...I've heard it all." I've seen many professionals trade in their shingle for the wine trade. Attorneys, eye doctors, MDs, and others. Most of the time they are seeking the lifestyle that is purported to belong to winemaking. For sure, this type of career move will test your resolve; many find out that it wasn't and isn't what they were seeking. Enter Dr. Jan Krupp, a celebrated Internist who got the calling. Can you imagine? Solid career, solid practice, helping others all tossed to the side of the road to enter the wine trade. But when he was told that his most desired property was virtually useless for wine grapes, he jumped at the opportunity- yes, jumped at the opportunity. This adventure would become the famed Stagecoach Vineyards....and turn into a multi-million dollar sale to Gallo. Trading a stethoscope for a shovel is not your everyday midlife crisis, but Dr. Jan Krupp makes it sound as natural as coaxing vines from volcanic rock. In this episode, you're invited into the world of a physician who took the road less traveled—straight up an unplantable Napa hillside—to plant the seeds of what would become the famed Stagecoach Vineyard. You'll discover how Dr. Jan Krupp applied scientific precision and creative drive to transform barren land into one of California's most celebrated grape sources, all while welding together risk, relentless work, and a bit of luck in the kiln of family partnership. Listen as he peels back the layers of his own journey—from home winemaking in a garage to collaborating with legendary consultants and top winemakers, each step a blend of experimentation and vision. You'll gain an inside look at his new book, Forging Eden, an exploration not just of Napa terroir, but of personal transformation and resilience. Along the way, Dr. Jan Krupp and Paul Kalemkiarian reveal the untold challenges that come with creating a world-class vineyard, wrestle with the shifting tides of Napa's hospitality and wine tourism, and debate the future of authentic winemaking in the age of crown caps and experiential brands.

Vita Vea would immediately strengthen the Giants' defensive front, but acquiring him could cost Kayvon Thibodeaux, draft capital and another major contract. Drew and Rob debate whether the upgrade in the middle would justify sacrificing a younger pass rusher entering a critical season.Follow on Spotify and leave a 5-star rating on Apple Podcasts if you enjoy no-BS Giants debate.Should the Giants trade Kayvon Thibodeaux for Vita Vea? Vea would fill a larger immediate need, but the Giants would be surrendering youth, contract control and potentially an additional draft pick for a 31-year-old seeking a new deal. The trade request leads to a detailed discussion about whether Joe Schoen should call Tampa Bay and what a realistic offer could look like. Because the Buccaneers need pass-rush help, Drew and Rob examine a hypothetical package built around Thibodeaux and a Day 3 pick. A fourth-round selection is viewed as a reasonable ceiling, while adding a second-round pick would make the price excessive.Would Vea become the best defensive tackle on the Giants immediately, or would New York be repeating the type of expensive commitment it avoided by trading Dexter Lawrence?Vea remains a major interior presence, but age and money complicate the decision. The Giants would need to determine whether he fits their competitive timeline, whether they could extend him at a manageable number and whether Vea would even want to join New York after watching the Lawrence situation unfold. John Harbaugh's arrival and the organization's new direction could help the pitch, but this remains a hypothetical debate—not a report that the Giants and Buccaneers have discussed a trade. The Giants also announced a major expansion of their East Rutherford headquarters and training facility. The project includes approximately 93,500 square feet of new construction and 46,000 square feet of renovations, with completion expected before the 2028 season.Drew and Rob react to the planned locker room, weight room, nutrition, recovery and rehabilitation upgrades while questioning how much the project reflects Harbaugh's influence. The investment suggests ownership is preparing for a long-term change in how the football operation trains, communicates and supports its players. Is this simply an overdue modernization, or evidence that the Giants are finally providing their football staff with the infrastructure expected from a serious NFL organization? The largest portion of the episode examines the 18 players brought in for workouts. The group included quarterback Jake Haener; running back Kylin James; wide receivers Malik Heath and Eric McAlister; tight ends Zach Davidson, Tyler Moore and Scotty Washington; offensive tackles Jake Curhan, Luke Felix-Fualalo and Derek Simmons; defensive tackles Marlon Davidson, Daniel Ekuale and Foley Fatukasi; linebackers Kenneth Murray and Chandler Martin; and defensive backs Tony Grimes, Ahmaad Moses and Sam Webb.Rather than treating every workout as a major move, Drew and Rob separate the legitimate depth candidates from the developmental long shots. Curhan offers more than 50 games of NFL experience and tackle-guard versatility. Murray brings extensive starting experience at linebacker. Fatukasi has a proven history as an early-down run defender, while Haener gives the team another developmental quarterback option.McAlister's final season at TCU, Moses' ball production at SMU and Grimes' former five-star pedigree provide upside, but each player would need to prove value on special teams or at the bottom of the depth chart. The size of the workout group also raises a broader question: Is the new Giants staff dissatisfied with the roster, or simply creating constant competition before training camp? Two players earned contracts after the workout. Former second-round pick Marlon Davidson brings defensive-line versatility and previous experience with Dennard Wilson in Tennessee. His production has never matched his draft position, but familiarity with the scheme gives him a realistic chance to compete for rotational snaps.Tyler Moore enters as a blocking-oriented tight end and H-back after limited receiving production at Iowa State. His path to the roster depends almost entirely on blocking, special teams and assignment reliability. Drew and Rob question whether Moore offers enough upside to beat out the other depth tight ends or whether he is more likely headed for the practice squad. The episode closes with Wilson's encouraging comments about Deonte Banks. Wilson said Banks had a “helluva offseason,” has been running toward coaching instead of away from it and appears to be in a better headspace. Can better coaching finally unlock Banks, or have Giants fans heard too many offseason turnaround stories? The hosts remain cautious about expecting a former first-round star to suddenly emerge. A more realistic success would be Banks becoming a dependable defensive back, depth option and possible return contributor. Training camp will determine whether the offseason praise represents genuine progress or another temporary burst of optimism.Merch: https://2giantgoofballs-shop.fourthwall.com/ Support: https://buymeacoffee.com/2giantgoofballs All episodes: https://2giantgoofballs.buzzsprout.com/The package follows the Buzzsprout requirement to lead with the gain-versus-sacrifice tradeoff, include the searchable Big Question and omit chapters unless specifically requested. Hosts Will Alimonos and Zach Bishop return with another jam-packed episode of Little Column A, Little Column B, covering one of the busiest weeks in sports and beyond. The show opens with an unbelievable real-life rescue after a sign-maintenance worker becomes stranded 130 feet in the air when a scissor lift fails. The hosts break down how emergency crews responded, why the rescue took hours, and the surprising role a replacement lift played in getting the worker safely back to the ground. From there, the conversation shifts to the NBA's biggest headline: LeBron James reportedly joining the Philadelphia 76ers on a veteran-minimum contract. Will and Zach debate whether the move makes Philadelphia the favorite in the Eastern Conference or creates more questions than answers. They discuss roster fit, championship expectations, injury concerns, Joel Embiid's future, and how the Knicks, Celtics, Pistons, and other contenders stack up in a loaded East. The NBA discussion continues with trade speculation, stalled deals, front-office uncertainty, the league's new lottery rules, and which teams could emerge as surprise contenders. They also examine how League Pass and the balance of power across both conferences could be affected heading into the new season. The episode then turns to college football as the hosts discuss the ongoing UNC investigation involving Michael Lombardi and NIL questions, along with Pablo Torre's reporting and what it could mean moving forward. To wrap things up, Will and Zach preview their upcoming NFL coverage beginning August 10, discuss fantasy football burnout, laugh about Mike Vrabel's viral puppy-filled press conference, and react to the NBA's decision to move the Knicks-Celtics season opener away from Madison Square Garden. LeBron James shocked the NBA world by signing with the Philadelphia 76ers, and the Hoopsology Podcast crew jumped on an emergency episode of "In the Lab" to react in real time. Hosts Matt Thomas, Justin Goodrum, and Alan Muenzler break down everything from LeBron's surprising social media announcement to what this blockbuster move actually means for a Sixers roster that now features Joel Embiid, Jaylen Brown, Tyrese Maxey, and VJ Edgecombe. In this clip, the guys dig into the biggest questions surrounding the signing: Was LeBron really considering retirement, or was this the plan all along? How does a two-year, team-friendly deal change the power dynamics in the locker room? Can Nick Nurse manage a roster full of ball-dominant scorers the way he did with that championship Raptors squad? And what does joining a fourth franchise mean for LeBron's legacy as he chases one more ring? The crew also weighs in on fit concerns at power forward, the impact on Maxey and Edgecombe's development, lingering health question marks that have plagued Philly for a decade, and where this new-look Sixers team stacks up in an increasingly competitive Eastern Conference.
LeBron James is headed to Philadelphia, and the Knicks-Sixers rivalry just became the hottest fight in the Eastern Conference. Evan Roberts and Shaun Morash explain why LeBron, Jaylen Brown, Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey make the Sixers a legitimate threat, even though the defending champion Knicks remain the favorites. Evan argues that LeBron chose the highest-risk destination possible, putting himself in position to become either a Philadelphia hero or the face of another crushing Sixers failure. The Celtics take heavy blame for helping create Philadelphia's new powerhouse, the crew revisits its wildly inaccurate LeBron predictions, and Knicks fans are challenged to invade Citizens Bank Park in team gear. Plus, Evan and Shaun celebrate three years of Evan & Tiki by revisiting the show's first moments, Shaun's Giancarlo Stanton controversy and the surprisingly forgettable debut of Cinco de Five-o.

U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to impose a 50-per-cent tariff on more than 500 Canadian goods effective next month. This is far from the first time the Trump administration has threatened levies on Canada. But this time, the administration has pulled a lever that dates all the way back to the 1930s. Today, Adrian Morrow, The Globe's U.S. correspondent based in Washington, walks us through the Smoot-Hawley Act Trump has invoked, the strategy behind using it and what legal challenges the law could face. Send us Fan MailChris Hobson, CEO of Rare Beauty Brands, home to Patchology and Kate Somerville, breaks down the business of beauty: the insight that turned Old Spice around, what it now costs to build a brand, how to handle dupes, and the metrics founders should track.Who is Chris Hobson? He started a clothing brand in college in Canada, then joined Procter & Gamble in brand management, running Scope, Folgers Canada, Old Spice, and Secret before an MBA and a career building brands. "As a brand manager, you get trained as sort of the mini general manager of your brand."How did he turn around Old Spice?By finding an insight instead of denying the brand's age. Research showed a woman would borrow her partner's deodorant from almost any brand except Old Spice. "We came up with this funny tongue in cheek positioning of Old Spice as the last bastion of masculinity." The brand went from a distant fifth to third in Canada, and the positioning went global. What makes consumers loyal to a beauty brand?Product quality first, emotional connection second. "When you get that magic of the consumer insight married to really high quality product, that's the foundation of a brand."What insight drives Patchology and Kate Somerville? Two very different ones. "The insight for a Patchology consumer is I want a moment of joy... the act of putting on the mask slows me down from my crazy day." The Kate Somerville consumer is buying certainty from a clinic with 20 years and 250,000 facials behind it.Should beauty brands chase trends?Only in ways authentic to the brand, though Hobson is candid about the pull. "The science is sort of suspect, but hey, it's a $10 million opportunity. How do we not do it?" Brands lose themselves when they go wholesale trend focused. Why did Patchology stop marketing its science?Because consumers buy results, not mechanisms. Hobson watched women's eyes glaze over at talk of ten times more ingredient delivery, then light up when the patches came off. "Turns out all she cares about is the better results."How long does it take to build a beauty brand?Longer than founders expect, now that ad costs have erased the cheap growth era. "You've got to be prepared to raise 10 to 20 million dollars at least, and spend 10 to 20 years on it. That's the new reality."Why is it harder for indie brands to scale now?The economics of attention changed. "The advertising prices have come up and the ROI has come down, and so it's harder for young brands to make that leap."How should a brand respond to dupes?By owning the category so copies feed demand back to the original. "When a brand copies us, a rising tide lifts all boats." Patchology is up over 20 percent this year.Do dupes steal customers from the original?Within limits set by price and psychology. "They're wearing it and they're knowing in their mind, I'm not really wearing Chanel." Hobson argues most of those consumers come back.Does getting into Target or Walmart grow a beauty brand? Not without demand behind it. "If you don't have the demand generation capability in place to move that product off the shelf... you're out." Accessibility is a high stakes strategy, not a shortcut. What metrics should new beauty founders track?Repeat purchase above all, measured by cohort rather than revenue share. "The way we make money as brands is repeat purchase... if I had to go out and acquire a customer every single time, I'd go out of business."What is the biggest business lesson of his career?People. "You want to hire the A level person, even if they're a little threatening to you, because they're gonna do the job way better than you would ever do it."Listen to the full episode with Chris Hobson of Rare Beauty Brands on Skin Anarchy, available wherever you get your podcasts.Shop Kate Sommerville and PatchologyDon't forget to subscribe to Skin Anarchy on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or your preferred platform.Reach out to us through email with any questions.Sign up for our newsletter!Shop all our episodes and products mentioned through our ShopMy Shelf!Support the show

In 2007, two Harvard researchers added a splash of balsamic vinegar to beer. When drinkers knew the beer contained vinegar, they hated it. But when the researchers told them “this is our MIT brew," the majority loved it. The study reveals the secrets behind marketing.
