In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by celebrated Catholic author and convert (or, revert) to the Catholic faith Emily Stimpson Chapman to talk about all things Catholic. We dig into her own conversion story as someone who was raised Catholic during the "Father Ted in leotards" era of post-Vatican II Catholicism, her rediscovering Christianity in Protestant denominations while working in Washington, DC, and her eventual wrestling and return to the Catholic faith. We also discuss the sacraments, the Catholic imagination, and becoming Catholic in a time of scandal. All of this and more this week on the show. Messy Family Podcast : Catholic conversations on marriage and family
“Before we began the adoption process, before we could be the parents our children needed us to be, I had to grieve those losses. I had to offer my broken dreams to Jesus, and trust He would not permit me to carry the cross of infertility unless He could bring something beautiful out of it.” - Emily Stimpson Chapman This interview with Emily and Chris Chapman is an amazing conversation about some deep and painful topics, but sprinkled with laughter and joy! Emily Stimpson Chapman is an accomplished author and Insta personality, but she is also a wife, mother, and friend to us! During the pandemic, Fr. Tim Grumbach, a priest of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, learned how to say the Extraordinary Form of the Mass, also known at the Latin Mass. He reflects on how saying both the Latin Mass and the Novus Ordo--the Mass most Catholics participate in today--enhanced his appreciation for the liturgy and helped him become a better priest.
Fr. Ajani Gibson, a newly ordained priest of the Archdiocese of New Orleans, discusses how culture can permeate the liturgy in beautiful ways. He says that when we make space for cultural expression in the Mass we elevate our worship and the body of Christ becomes more united.
Have you ever been distracted by the many sights and sounds at Mass? Shannon Wimp Schmidt, a mother who also has more than a decade of experience in youth and parish ministry, says you can overcome distractions by building holy habits and engaging in contemplative prayer.
Fr. Joshua Whitfield, pastor of St. Rita Catholic Church in Dallas, Texas, provides practical tips for preparing for Mass. He also discusses his conversion from the Anglican Church to Catholicism.
Theologian Timothy P. O'Malley provides an overview of the USCCB's Eucharistic Revival and discusses how the Mass should not only be integral to the life of the parish, but also in our everyday lives.
In this episode, theologian Susan M. Timoney discusses the history and structure of the Mass. She will help you understand why worship at the altar is the most essential form of prayer for believers.

There are three Lenten practices that Christ and the Church invite us to really lean into - prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. I don't know about you, but I usually fall into two traps when it comes to fasting. Either I decide that this Lent is going to be the most challenging Lent for me ever - like the Lent where Joseph had to talk me out of fasting on just bread and water for the full forty days. OR I go into the other ditch and think that I actually don't need to fast at all since my life as a mom is already sacrificial enough (hello, kids waking up at 3am). There is a virtuous middle when it comes to fasting and that's what we're here to talk about today. Today, I'm sitting down with Kristen Van Uden. Kristin works at Sophia Institute Press and in this episode, we're talking about a new book that Sophia just released called “The Lenten Cookbook.” But we're not just talking recipes (and don't worry, we are talking recipes). We're also talking about fasting joyfully (yes, that's possible), the history of fasting and Lent in the Catholic Church, and how to approach fasting if you've struggled with an unhealthy relationship with food. Whether you're listening in on this episode because fasting is something that comes easily for you or maybe it's one of the most challenging aspects of Lent and you want to grow in joy surrounding your fasting, sister, this letter is for you. Topics we talked about in this episode: The inspiration behind "The Lenten Cookbook," a collaboration between Vatican chef David Geisser and Catholic author Scott Hahn The history of Lent within the Catholic tradition and how has Lent evolved to what we have today as Catholics All of the “letter of the law” questions around fasting, but also how to fruitfully go deeper and enter into a spirit of self-denial in a healthy was as Catholic women today The difference between fasting and dieting How fasting can be joyful (in Lent and year-round) Ways to approach fasting if you've struggled with a healthy relationship with food in your story The recipes Kristen is looking forward to making from “The Lenten Cookbook” The beauty of creativity in our lives as Catholic women living out the feminine genius Resources you should check out after listening to this episode: “The Lenten Cookbook",” published by Sophia Institute Press If you struggle with understanding food and receiving it as a gift, I highly recommend “The Catholic Table” by Emily Stimpson Chapman.
