Dyami Starks is one of the Midwest's premier basketball trainers. His approach to training combines professional-level insights with data-driven development strategies. Starks also serves as the player development coach for All Iowa Attack, the director of Starks Elite AAU program, and as an assistant women's basketball coach at The College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minnesota.Dyami was a Division I standout at Bryant University and enjoyed a professional career that included stops in Australia, Kazakhstan, Turkey and Latvia. On this episode Mike and Dyami discuss his unique training philosophy, which emphasizes the importance of fostering a player's intrinsic understanding of the game through inquiry and self-discovery rather than rote instruction. Dyami articulates the necessity of adapting training methodologies to suit individual players, highlighting that player development is predicated on providing clarity and establishing a rapport that encourages confidence and growth. Moreover, we explore the evolving landscape of basketball recruiting, particularly in light of the recent changes brought about by the introduction of NIL and the transfer portal, which have significantly altered the dynamics for high school athletes. Throughout our conversation, Starks underscores the essence of cultivating a love for the game, encouraging young players to embrace the journey of growth and improvement while navigating the challenges that lie ahead.Follow us on Twitter and Instagram @hoopheadspod for the latest updates on episodes, guests, and events from the Hoop Heads Pod.Make sure you're subscribed to the Hoop Heads Pod on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts and while you're there please leave us a 5 star rating and review. From MPR News, Art Hounds are members of the Minnesota arts community who look beyond their own work to highlight what's exciting in local art. Their recommendations are lightly edited from the audio heard in the player above. Want to be an Art Hound? Submit here.A spring garden in ceramics Cindy Pope is a ceramic artist from Waite Park. She got a dose of early spring by visiting the ceramics exhibit “Garden Party” at the Paramount Center for the Arts in St. Cloud. Created by Stacy Larson, who is originally from Cold Spring, the exhibit features wheel-thrown and hand-carved cups and tableware that look like delicate leaves and flowers, glazed in springtime colors. The exhibit runs through March. Voices of the Asian American experienceJulia Cheng of Duluth had a chance to hear the world premiere this fall of “mOthertongue: Lived Experience in Asian America.” Soprano Jennifer Lien of Duluth performs three song cycles commissioned by Asian American women composers, accompanied on piano by Lina Yoo-Min Lee. Lien commissioned these new works in partnership with the Cincinnati Song Initiative with support from the Minnesota State Arts Board Creative Individuals grant. The duo has continued to perform these works in what Cheng refers to as “a living collaboration.” They'll perform highlights of the song cycles at the College of St. Scholastica's “Lunch With Friends” on March 25, with the full performance on March 28 at the college's Mitchell Auditorium. Julia Cheng was touched by the performance and looks forward to hearing it again.“I have to say that, as the child of immigrants from China, these songs really resonated with me,” Cheng said. “I always wondered, you know, how did they deal with the dislocation of leaving home, family, language, culture, developing new community, the wrenching loss of being separated from family? These are all things that I heard bits and pieces of in the song cycles by Melissa Dunphy and the other two composers.” Wood sculptures at Tettegouche Annalisa Buerke follows her former colleague artist Rick Love on Instagram, where she enjoyed watching his process of creating a series of sculptures now on view at the Tettegouche State Park Visitor Center in Silver Bay.The five sculptures are all made of wood — some painted, some charred — that celebrate both forests and sustainability. The works evoke the moon, the sun, a tree, a waterfall and Lake Superior. They'll be on view through March.Tettegouche State Park's Visitor Center includes both juried art shows (of which Love's exhibit was one) and an artist-in-residence program.

Gospel Mark 6:53-56 After making the crossing to the other side of the sea, Jesus and his disciples came to land at Gennesaret and tied up there. As they were leaving the boat, people immediately recognized him. They scurried about the surrounding country    and began to bring in the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. Whatever villages or towns or countryside he entered, they laid the sick in the marketplaces and begged him that they might touch only the tassel on his cloak; and as many as touched it were healed. Reflection Jesus came into the world to initiate the kingdom of God. It's a kingdom free of evil, and the power of evil is shame and fear and anger, and it creates dis-ease. And so when he manifests his power to heal, he is really manifesting the kingdom that's going to come and people are longing for it and yet don't even understand what it's about. But that's what Jesus came to reveal. And eventually we grow, even today in our consciousness of what this kingdom is really about. About wholeness, fullness, integrity. Closing Prayer Father, help us always to recognize in you this power to heal is a sign of the kingdom. And it always somehow comes across as something that is connected to love, to compassion, to understanding. Fill us with these gifts as we go about our day healing our brothers, our sisters from the shame, the fear, the anger that often keeps them outside the kingdom. And we ask this in Jesus' name, Amen. Full Text of ReadingsMemorial of Saint Scholastica, Virgin Lectionary: 329The Saint of the day is Saint ScholasticaSaint Scholastica's Story Twins often share the same interests and ideas with an equal intensity. Therefore, it is no surprise that Scholastica and her twin brother, Benedict, established religious communities within a few miles from each other. Born in 480 of wealthy parents, Scholastica and Benedict were brought up together until he left central Italy for Rome to continue his studies. Little is known of Scholastica's early life. She founded a religious community for women near Monte Cassino at Plombariola, five miles from where her brother governed a monastery. The twins visited each other once a year in a farmhouse because Scholastica was not permitted inside the monastery. They spent these times discussing spiritual matters. According to the Dialogues of St. Gregory the Great, the brother and sister spent their last day together in prayer and conversation. Scholastica sensed her death was close at hand and she begged Benedict to stay with her until the next day. He refused her request because he did not want to spend a night outside the monastery, thus breaking his own Rule. Scholastica asked God to let her brother remain and a severe thunderstorm broke out, preventing Benedict and his monks from returning to the abbey. Benedict cried out, “God forgive you, Sister. What have you done?” Scholastica replied, “I asked a favor of you and you refused. I asked it of God and he granted it.” Brother and sister parted the next morning after their long discussion. Three days later, Benedict was praying in his monastery and saw the soul of his sister rising heavenward in the form of a white dove. Benedict then announced the death of his sister to the monks and later buried her in the tomb he had prepared for himself. Reflection Scholastica and Benedict gave themselves totally to God and gave top priority to deepening their friendship with him through prayer. They sacrificed some of the opportunities they would have had to be together as brother and sister in order better to fulfill their vocation to the religious life. In coming closer to Christ, however, they found they were also closer to each other. In joining a religious community, they did not forget or forsake their family but rather found more brothers and sisters. Friends of the Rosary,Today, February 10, the Catholic Church honors St. Scholastica (480-547), a nun who was the twin sister of St. Benedict, the “father of monasticism” in Western Europe. The twins' mother died at their birth, around 480, in Umbria, Italy,Under Benedict's direction, Scholastica founded a community of nuns near the great Benedictine monastery Monte Cassino.Inspired by Benedict's teaching, his sister devoted her life to seeking and serving God. Both dedicated themselves to God from early youth. Violent ‘town versus gown' confrontations have been part of Oxford life ever since the University was founded - but reached an ignominious peak on 10th February, 1355, when almost 100 people were massacred in what became known as the ‘St Scholastica's Day Riot'. The killing spree began as a brawl in a bar. When a pair of students at the Swindlestock Tavern complained about the quality of the wine, the Landlord responded with “saucie language” - and the students by bottling him. Then, it escalated. A lot. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly investigate how the blood-letting was preceded by decades of tension in the city; explain why such events explain the foundation of Cambridge University; and reveal why the fight was still being discussed in Parliament, some six hundred years later… Further Reading: • ‘Rioting over wine led to 90 deaths' (Oxford Mail, 2011): https://www.oxfordmail.co.uk/news/9200746.rioting-wine-led-90-deaths/ • ‘St. Scholastica Day Riot: When English People Killed Dozens Over The Taste Of Wine' (History Daily): https://historydaily.org/st-scholastica-day-riot-facts-stories-trivia • ‘The St. Scholastica's Day Riot' (The History Guy, 2020): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3qPzNcJKQM Love the show? + Holy Gospel according to St. Mark 6: 53 – 56 After making the crossing, Jesus and his disciples came to land at Gennesaret and tied up there. The Gospel of the Lord

From the responsorial psalm: “Bless the LORD, O my soul! O LORD, my God, you are great indeed! You are clothed with majesty and glory, robed in light as with a cloak. May the Lord be glad in his works.”A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark (Mk 6:53-56, today's readings)They scurried about the surrounding country and began to bring in the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was.Word of Jesus spread quickly throughout the whole region. In Gennesaret, as soon as people realized Jesus set foot on the shore, they begin to bring their sick to him. Not long before, on his way to heal Jairus's daughter, a woman came to Jesus only to touch his cloak and was healed. Perhaps people heard this story told and began to hurry to get their sick loved ones to Jesus as soon as he was present. Mark tells us this about the places Jesus visits: “Whatever villages or towns or countryside he entered, they laid the sick in the marketplaces and begged him that they might touch only the tassel on his cloak; and as many as touched it were healed.” Jesus rewards the great faith these people act on with teaching and healing, bringing them to wholeness in this life while preparing them for life in the world to come.God, help me rest today in the true hope and consolation of Jesus Christ your Son. “Jesus preached the Gospel of the Kingdom and cured every disease among the people,” the Gospel acclamation says. Time after time, Lord, let me come to you to hear your word and to know genuine gratitude for all your good gifts. In receiving you in the Eucharist, I begin to perceive the peace the people experienced as you healed them of their illnesses. Stay with me, Lord; make me whole. Memorial of Saint Scholastica, pray for us!Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

“If men knew the peace good Religious enjoy, the whole world would become a monastery.” (St. Scholastica of Nursia). The bond of siblings is undeniable, and the bond of twins is especially profound. St. Scholastica, the twin sister of St. Benedict, visited her brother often to discuss matters of faith and events of the world. Though he could not be present for her earthly death, God blessed him with a vision of her ascending to heaven. If you love your siblings well, or need to work on loving them more, this episode of the #BecomeFire Podcast is for you.

For some Minnesotans, Thanksgiving is a community event. Volunteers in Duluth have spent Monday and Tuesday peeling and cooking 2,000 pounds of potatoes — that's about the weight of a small car. This is just part of the work behind the College of St. Scholastica's free Thanksgiving Day Buffet. The event is 35 years running and now takes place at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center. Organizers this year expect to serve more than 3,000 people and deliver 1,000 meals to homebound Duluthians. MPR News host Nina Moini talks with Monica Hendrickson, who has led the effort for about a decade, and Kala Pederson, who coordinates meal deliveries.
