It is May and Mental Health Awareness month. I can't think of anything better to focus on than our teens. I always loved working with teens, because I felt it was preventive medicine for their future. We have all heard the concerning statistics of how mental health issues are rising in teens. Suicide, anxiety and depression have skyrocketed (If you haven't listened to my Episode #80 on "Hope for the Problem of Suicide, w/Matthew Sleeth", check it out). This is only the start of the mental health issues, so it's hard to know where to focus.  What I have found over my 34+ years of counseling is that at the heart of most people's problems is Identity. And during the preteen/teen years is where this exploration hits a high note. Who am I? What is my value? What is my purpose? Am I seen, known, loved, accepted?  On this Podcast for the next 6 weeks, we will be focusing on the the journey of identity. In the cultural climate we are in, that means we need to address gender identity/confusion and gender dysphoria, because it seems this is the ‘measuring stick' youth (and adults) are being encouraged to use. As Christians' how do we help kids navigate this journey? My goal in this series is to have conversations; give information, educate, empower and equip parents, grandparents, leaders, and youth. I will not tell you what to do or how to think, although some of my opinions (as well as my guests) will come through.  I want us to think about these issues thoroughly and be equipped to help kids do the same. Today is an introduction and laying of the groundwork to these conversations. This is not the an easy topic to explore, but it's essential. We have an entire generation of youth who need hope and healing. Let's join together and help change their world. Do you often feel stuck battling the same fears, temptations, lies, and doubts, wondering if you'll ever overcome them? Does it seem as if you're in that battle alone? Stephanie welcomes Judy Dunagan to discuss Christ-centered solutions to these problems that plague most of us. How do we live in the victory that Christ has purchased for us? How does it become our reality TODAY? Judy has traversed many valleys of anxiety, burnout, relational conflicts, and more. She is well-equipped from the trenches to give us insights on how to walk the pathways to God's presence that Jesus opened for us. In this conversation, Judy focuses on the nature and power of prayer, as well as the essential foundation of a high Christology. You are invited to experience Jesus as the mighty Lion of Judah today! Judy says, “Take heart. The enemy's roar is but a whisper in the presence of our mighty God.” In The Loudest Roar, you'll marvel at the power, majesty, and authority of our Lord Jesus and learn how to stand in the unshakable victory He's already won for you. In that victory, you will: - Discern God's voice over the lies of the enemy - Stand firm in faith rather than give way to fear - Dwell in the cover of God's armor over you and your loved ones - Keep your thoughts captive to truth Find victory over cycles of sin in your life God's roar over you will become your roar, diminishing the lies of the enemy . . . to a whisper. MEET JUDY DUNAGAN JUDY DUNAGAN is an acquisitions editor for the women's Bible studies and books at Moody Publishers. A wonder seeker of God and His Word, Judy is passionate about discipleship and making God's Word and prayer come alive in everyday life. She is a speaker and Bible teacher and serves on the Board of Deeper Walk International, the ministry her father Mark I. Bubeck founded. Judy and her husband Rick live in Colorado. Judy writes with clarity, strength, and warmth, inviting the reader to take hold of everything that Christ has taken hold of for us. Reading it will empower you to understand your position of authority in Christ and how to live in the victory that Jesus has won for us. Read it. Underline it. Marinate in it. Take it to heart. Make it your own.” —Stasi Eldredge, New York Times bestselling author, Captivating “If you want to rise up and make a difference for yourself, those you love, and your community, read this book. To be victorious, which God wants for you, you must appropriate God's strengths and weap[1]ons. I benefited from so many of Judy's explanations, stories, and challenges, and you will, too. I need[1]ed her insights and refreshing, vulnerable, and accurate explanations of relevant Scripture. Passages came alive! And her prayers! They'll mature me and give me hope. I'll be reading them often. Truths here will allow you to become who you know you want to be—an equipped and powerful warrior in God's army!” —Kathy Koch, founder of Celebrate Kids, Inc., and author of Five to Thrive, 8 Great Smarts, and other titles “If you long for courageous faith, authentic truth, righteous living, and a prayer life that faces fear and uncertainty head-on, look no further. In The Loudest Roar author Judy Dunagan teaches us to defeat the enemy and stand firm in the mighty strength of our powerful Lion of Judah! This book gave me tools to develop my ‘roar' in the face of disappointment, discouragement, temptation, and unfulfilled expectations. Read this treasure on your own, or better yet, with a group of friends who will explore the ‘Going Deeper' section together. The prayers in the back of the book give you everything needed to roar like our Lion, and to send the enemy whimpering away.” —Carol Kent, Executive Director of Speak Up Ministries, speaker, and author, When I Lay My Isaac Down “ This book on spiritual warfare is optimistic, realistic, and personally applicable. I appreciated Judy's candor in sharing her personal struggles and even those within her own marriage. This is a book that can be given to any Christian, knowing that all of us need to be reminded that we are in a winnable battle with our unseen enemy, whose roar is drowned out by the louder roar of the Lion of the Tribe of Judah. The book is a wonderful reminder that we are serving a King who has already won!” —Erwin W. In No Reason to Hide, Dr. Lutzer examines the major points of conflict that divide culture and the church and illuminates how these issues reveal the deeply rooted hold of secularism on society. But even as the tsunami of secularism sweeps through culture, Christians are still called to courage. He tells believers, “Our task as Christians is nothing less than proclaiming God’s sovereignty over the sovereignty of the individual and a love for God rather than a love for self.” See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Stephanie welcomes Pastor Jim Cymbala from the Brooklyn Tabernacle for a powerful conversation about the essential power of the Holy Spirit in our lives as believers. There is no life in Christ apart from the Spirit, and this is deeply transformational. This episode releases on the official anniversary of the Gospel Spice podcast! So we are gifting you a very special bonus episode that Stephanie is particularly giddy about. In his new book FAN THE FLAME, Pastor Jim calls us to a return to a holy experience and study of Scripture and a renewed dependence on the Holy Spirit. We need a heart that searches after Him – the heart of the truly “poor in spirit” from Jesus' Beatitudes. How do we then keep up this spirit of “Lord, I need you today and every day”? It starts with listening to God as He speaks to us through His word. It's daring to pray, “Lord, whatever you want me to do, I will do it.” In the context of our Gospel Spice series GOD'S GLORY, OUR DELIGHT, Pastor Jim describes for us today the essential nature of humility and dependence on the Holy Spirit. Pastor Jim's first book, Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire, was one of those books that deeply influenced Stephanie and her theology and approach to the Holy Spirit in the days of her young faith. She still reads it every few years, so she is celebrating the release of this new book for a new generation of believers. Pastor Jim says, “The Holy Spirit watches carefully how we treat the Book He Himself wrote.” Everything has to be judged by the Word of God. Amen! Pastor Jim shows us how the enemy of our soul works in the extremes – emphasizing either only Scripture or only the Spirit – and how balance is essential. Pastor Jim clearly spells out the illnesses that plague the church today. He says, “God uses people, not programs, to bring about his kingdom on earth.” He addresses Pastors and people in roles of spiritual leadership to call for a return to our first love and passion for Christ under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. He calls away from burnout and discouragement, from greed and self-interest, and towards humility, love, and other-centeredness. Pastor Jim reminds us of the essential nature of unity in the Spirit, and the bond of peace. We discuss the works of the enemy to cause slander and division, and the healing power of the Spirit in unity and against discord. “Once there is discord, then you know Satan is working. And God is the God of peace. We are not all going to agree on the secondary matters. But take the essential things, like discrimination and racial tensions. It is just shameful, we need to repent, so we see people the way God does.” Pastor Jim reminds us that we are all influencers, which comes with privileges as children of God, but also with the responsibility to steward this influence well. How do we as Christians enter this stewardship? He says that we are to be full of His Spirit and of His love so that our very presence will lead people to seek Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Pastor Jim and his wife Carol began serving at the Brooklyn Tabernacle when just 20 people attended, and today thousands attend weekend services. The Cymbalas have seen seasons of discouragement become gateways to spiritual revival, and Jim longs to encourage weary and disheartened pastors to stay the course. Cymbala began working on his first new book in a decade, Fan the Flame: Let Jesus Renew Your Calling and Revive Your Church, while counseling pastors during the COVID-19 pandemic. The book's message is crafted for both pastors and church members. “We Christians are all on the same team. If one hurts, we should all feel it; and if one is blessed, we should all rejoice,” writes Cymbala. “Fan the Flame is my heartfelt endeavor to bring encouragement to the body of Christ and especially to church leaders. It has no magic formula or personal vision I wish to communicate. It's just a sincere attempt to review what we're doing and why we're doing it, in light of God's Word.” Pastor Cymbala focuses on Acts 20 as he guides pastors and church leaders toward renewal and revival, including: • How to improve spiritual leadership • How to develop a deep and authentic practice of prayer • How to lead others into the presence of God • What pastors should and shouldn't be doing as leaders of a church BONUS – EXTRA CONVERSATION WITH PASTOR JIM  go to https://www.gospelspice.com/blog for the bonus content! MEET PASTOR JIM Pastor Jim Cymbala was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, where he enjoyed a successful career playing basketball in both high school and college. Upon graduation from the University of Rhode Island, he entered the business world and married his childhood sweetheart, Carol. Although unforeseen by them, it wasn't long before God called them into ministry. Arriving at the Brooklyn Tabernacle, Jim and Carol found a congregation of less than 20 people meeting in a rundown building located in an impoverished part of downtown Brooklyn. Over the years, God has shown his faithfulness to them and their congregation in many miraculous ways. Their present campus includes a large renovated theater in downtown Brooklyn, where thousands of people come each week to hear the good news of Jesus. During his early years of ministry, the discouragements and challenges nearly led Pastor Cymbala to resign. He desperately sought the Lord for a breakthrough in the church and in his ministry that would reflect what could be seen in the early church of the book of Acts. God clearly spoke to his heart that prayer was the source of the power and breakthrough that were needed. As a result, the Tuesday Night Prayer Meeting became the most important service of the week for the church. Today, Pastor Cymbala's ministry is still characterized by his emphasis on prayer in the church and a dependence on the Holy Spirit for his leading and power. Pastor Cymbala has a strong burden for the local church and has been blessed with the opportunity to encourage thousands of pastors around the country and world with what God has taught him throughout his 50 years of ministry. Pastor Cymbala is the author of several books, including Spirit Rising; Breakthrough Prayer; and Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire, which earned a Christian Book of the Year Award from ECPA. He has also done a number of sermon series and other video series on prayer and other important topics for the Christian church. His wife Carol directs the six-time Grammy Award-winning Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir, whose music has blessed people around the world. Pastor Jim and Carol Cymbala continue to serve as senior pastors of the Brooklyn Tabernacle and have been blessed with three children, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. find Pastor Jim: https://www.brooklyntabernacle.org/ find FAN THE FLAME with Zondervan or on Amazon. EARLY PRAISE FOR FAN THE FLAME BY JIM CYMBALA Pastor Jim Cymbala is known as a man who listens to God and faithfully teaches His Word, and in his book, Fan the Flame, he has a powerful message for all who struggle in their ministry. If you are a leader in the church and feel the depths of discouragement and defeat because of the challenges you face among God's people, this book is for you. Throughout these pages, Pastor Cymbala speaks as a wise and godly mentor, confronting the pain of fruitlessness and rejection, teaching essential principles for successful ministry, and recounting his experiences of God's faithfulness. I pray that those who are tempted to abandon their calling will read this book, embrace Pastor Cymbala's wise counsel, and be strengthened to carry on in God's plan for their lives. —Dr. Charles Stanley, Founder, In Touch Ministries, Pastor Emeritus, First Baptist Atlanta In Fan the Flame, my friend Jim Cymbala confronts head-on the crisis facing pastors and leaders across America. On today's Equipping You in Grace show, Dave and Erwin Lutzer discuss the influence of cultural Marxism in our culture, politics, and a biblical worldview, how Christians should respond to a toxic culture, along with his book, We Will Not Be Silent: Responding Courageously to Our Culture's Assault on Christianity (Harvest House, 202). What you'll hear in this episode The influence of CRT and intersectionality in our education system and culture. Cultural Marxism and how it is gaining a foothold in the United States. “Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9). Each day, you watch America turn further from Christian values and the core principles of liberty. It's frustrating to feel you can't assert biblical truth without facing condemnation, and fearful to witness outrage and victimhood replace respect and reason. Amidst this dissent, how can you not only stay rooted in your own faith, but continue publicly testifying for Jesus? In We Will Not Be Silenced, Dr. Erwin W. Lutzer prepares you to live out your convictions against a growing tide of hostility. Gain a better understanding of nonbelievers' legitimate hurts and concerns regarding issues like racism, sexism, and poverty—and identify the toxic responses secular culture disguises as solutions. In the process, you'll see how you can show compassion and gentleness to those outside of the faith without affirming their beliefs. We Will Not Be Silenced will ready you to move beyond fear and boldly accept the challenge of representing Christ to a watching world that needs Him now more than ever before.

Keep Silence! One of the greatest failings of prayer is saying too much. Too many words. Too much of what I want to say. No time for God to speak. For us to listen. For what we know to be true to sink in. Talk, talk, talk. We fill the minutes with our own words and never give God a chance to get a word in. And when we're done. We get up from our knees, pat ourselves on the back for having a “great” prayer time, and walk away having never heard from the Lord. I will admit, what I'm saying is so hard. Prayer itself is a struggle, let alone trying to keep my mind focused while I try to hear God's voice. If prayer is the junior hockey of discipleship, listening in prayer is the NHL. If prayer is the high school of discipleship, listening in prayer is college level. And what we've all found is that life is simply so noisy, so rushed, so frenzied, so demanding that it is all but impossible to quiet it all down and actually hear from him. And yet, in the midst of a series of prayer-complaints, Habakkuk hears this from the Lord, “Let all the earth keep silence before him.” This is God saying to the prophet, “Sit down. Shut up. And listen. I have something to say that you need to hear.” And with all the complaints and opinions today about this and that, pandemics, racial issues, the economic disaster that's ahead, and what governments did or didn't do that they should or shouldn't have done, God is saying to us, “Sit down. For a full list of prayers available through this podcast and our website, please follow this link:  https://psalm71.podbean.com/e/full-list-of-available-prayers-1513057365/   NOTE:  Due to the high percentage of scripture in this episode, this prayer has been recorded ONCE, for listening, reading along, and agreeing.  We suggest first listening to the entire recording at least once, then reading along and agreeing. This method will be more effective towards learning and memorizing the scriptures and the prayer language.    A Prayer To Renounce Fear* Father, help me to know and understand that I am a child of Your love. Help me to agree with You that I am not subject to fear, that you have not given to me a spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.  It is written in Romans 8:15-16, "For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father... The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God." Lord, I believe your Word -- help my unbelief!  Cause me to live in your Word, by the working of the Holy Spirit. Send the Holy Spirit to systematically expose and destroy every lie of the devil that I have accepted and that keeps me in bondage to fear, and replace every lie with the truth of your Word and of your Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth. I ask this, Father, in Jesus' name. In the Almighty Name of Jesus Christ: I reject fear of the future, for I believe that the future is in Your Hands. It is written in Psalm 31:15, "My times are in thy hand: deliver me from the hand of mine enemies." I reject fear of evildoers, for Your Word says, “Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war arise against me, yet I will be confident...For He will hide me in His shelter in the day of trouble; He will conceal me under the cover of His tent; He will lift me high upon a rock.” I renounce fear of rejection, for it is written in Psalm 27:10, "When my father and my mother forsake me, then the Lord will take me up." I renounce fear of witnessing about Christ, because it is written in Proverbs 29:25, "The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe." Therefore, I choose to fear You more than I do any human being. I affirm what is written in Psalm 118:6, "The Lord is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me?" I renounce the fear of losing my property and possessions, for Your Word says,  Philippians 4:11 and 19, "I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content... But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus." I renounce fear of Satan, for it is written in Revelation 12:10-11, "Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down... And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death." I renounce the fear of losing loved ones in death, for it is written in 1 Thessalonians 4:14, "For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him." I renounce fear of death, for the Lord Jesus Christ has said in John 14:1,3, "Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me... And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also." It is written also, in Philippians 1:21, "For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. I renounce fear of martyrdom, for Your Word declares, in Luke 12:4-5, "I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do... But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him." I renounce fear of loneliness, for we are promised, in 1 John 1:3, "Truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ." And in Hebrews 13:5, "I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee."And again, in John 14:27, "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." I renounce fear of intimidation, for you have told us, in John 15:18-19, "If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you... If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you." John 16:2-3,33, "They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service. [3] And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me. [33] These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world." I renounce fear of false accusations. I accept this promise, in Matthew 5:11-12, "Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you , and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake... Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you." I renounce the fear of being treated unjustly, and of being disenfranchised, for of Jesus Christ it is written, in 1 Peter 2:21,23, "For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:...Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously." I renounce fear of violent religions and their desire to intimidate and destroy. I renounce fear of political correctness. I declare that “The truth shall set me free,” and I choose to live in freedom and liberty in Christ Jesus. I will speak the truth and not be silent. I renounce all fear of curses, either known or unknown, spoken against me and my family. It is written in Proverbs 26:2, "The curse causeless shall not come"; and in 2 Corinthians 5:21, "For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him." I renounce fear of manipulation and control. I renounce the fear of being involved in public or political activity. I declare that Jesus Christ is Lord and Master over all. I submit to Jesus as Lord of every area of my life. Jesus Christ is Lord of my home. Jesus Christ is Lord of my relationships. Jesus Christ is Lord of my city. Jesus Christ is Lord of my nation. Jesus Christ is Lord, above all false gods and religions. Jesus Christ is Lord over all the nations of the earth. I commit myself to be a living witness to Jesus Christ as Lord. I am not ashamed of the gospel of His death, resurrection, and glorification. As in Galatians 6:14, "God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world." I ask now that You will fill me with Your Holy Spirit, and pour upon me all the blessings of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ. Grant me the grace to understand the truth of Your Word clearly, and to apply it in every area of my life. Give me words of hope and life, as You have promised. Open and bless my lips so that I can speak to others with authority and power in Jesus’ name. Give me the boldness, and give me wisdom, to be a faithful witness for Christ. Give me a love for all people, and a passion to share the love of Christ with them. Grant that I shall share with Jesus in his suffering, death, and resurrection. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.    Author:  Dr. Erwin W. "I'm not really afraid that many of you will be talked out of your faith... What I am more concerned about is whether or not you will be shamed out of your faith." Dr. Erwin Lutzer, Pastor Emeritus of Moody Church in Chicago, gives the commencement address to the LeTourneau University Class of 2018.
