In this week's episode, we're returning from our hiatus (Pye-atus?) with a bit of a switcheroo: instead of "Sinners" which we will get back to, I promise, we're talking shitty Italian horror and may well continue to do so for the next couple of weeks while our hearts are still so tender. It's the 1989 Michele Soavi vehicle "The Church." Special topics for your consideration include: the delights of a completely plotless Italian film, creeps being creepy, a PSA about butt plugs, and the concept of being a bit nicer to your 14 year old daughter at any point but especially when you're Dario Argento. We've done a million Italian movies, so just search the archives for Dario Argento or Lucio Fulci or Mario Bava and you're sure to be delighted. The regular lineup of links! Send us a textThe theatrical landscape of 2025 tells a fascinating story through its box office patterns and creative trends. Animation continues its unstoppable theatrical dominance across multiple studios, while long-running franchises like Mission Impossible and Jurassic World show unmistakable signs of fatigue. Has the time come to put these decades-old properties to rest? Our midyear film roundup reveals a striking preference for original storytelling over franchise continuation. From the breathtaking coastal beauty of Paolo Sorrentino's Parthenope to the inventive shark thrills of Dangerous Animals, our top picks demonstrate cinema's continued ability to surprise and captivate. Steven Soderbergh's spy thriller Black Bag showcases masterful craftsmanship, while Tim Robinson's Friendship brings his distinctive comedic sensibilities to feature length with remarkable success. The conversation turns passionate when discussing Ryan Coogler's Sinners and Ari Aster's Eddington – films that blend genres with extraordinary confidence while delivering profound thematic depth. Both represent bold, auteur-driven visions that resonated deeply with audiences seeking thoughtful, challenging cinema.Looking ahead, the remainder of 2025 promises an embarrassment of riches from acclaimed filmmakers including Park Chan-wook, Paul Thomas Anderson, and Jim Jarmusch. Their upcoming works, alongside anticipated releases like Edgar Wright's The Running Man and Blumhouse's Weapons, suggest our year-end lists may undergo significant transformation. What films have captured your imagination in 2025? Segment 1: • Peter's denial wasn't casual—he disowned “The Man” with whom he walked. • After denying Christ, Peter locked eyes with Jesus and wept bitterly. • Jesus' post-resurrection message singled Peter out—restoration was coming. Segment 2: • Peter's failure was massive, but so was Christ's mercy. • Jesus didn't just forgive—He re-commissioned Peter. • Christians need a real plan for recurring sin—don't wait to fall again. Segment 3: • When harm touches the innocent, righteous anger isn't wrong—it's biblical. • The Idaho killer's sentence feels like justice denied. • Christians should care deeply about justice because God does. Segment 4: • AI is being used to groom and exploit—one woman exposed its darkness firsthand. • Kids can bypass filters, and the internet keeps getting darker. • The Church must shine light, not just shout “how awful.” ___ Thanks for listening! Today's Topics: 1) Gospel - Matthew 13:31-35 - Jesus proposed a parable to the crowds. “The Kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that a person took and sowed in a field. It is the smallest of all the seeds, yet when full-grown it is the largest of plants. It becomes a large bush, and the birds of the sky come and dwell in its branches.” He spoke to them another parable. “The Kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed with three measures of wheat flour until the whole batch was leavened.” All these things Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables. He spoke to them only in parables, to fulfill what had been said through the prophet: I will open my mouth in parables, I will announce what has lain hidden from the foundation of the world. Bishop Sheen quote of the day 2, 3, 4) What is the Catholic Gospel? Is it more than saving sinners?
Jesus Followers Are Sinners Who Have a Savior Because “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners . . .”; Is Jesus Your Savior Too? MESSAGE SUMMARY: We are all sinners, but we now have a Savior – Jesus. As Paul tells us, in 1 Timothy 1:15-16, that the Gospel provides Salvation for all followers of Jesus, including the worst of sinners -- Paul: “The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life.". Also, Paul, in 1 Timothy 2:3b-6, further points out that God wants all of us to be saved by His Grace through Jesus if we only, as sinners like Paul, reach out to bring Jesus into our lives: “God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time.”. It is only because of Jesus the Christ that we receive the healing that we need. “I am a sinner who now has a Savior – do you”? TODAY'S PRAYER: Abba Father, I open my clenched fists to surrender everything you have given to me. Reestablish my identity in you — not in my family, my work, my accomplishments, or what others think of me. Cleanse the things in me that are not conformed to your will. By faith I unite my will to yours so that the likeness of Jesus Christ may be formed in me. In his name, amen. Scazzero, Peter. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Day by Day (p. 85). Zondervan. Kindle Edition. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, Because of who I am in Jesus Christ, I will not be driven by Hatred. Rather, I will abide in the Lord's Love. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in Me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5). This week, Josh and Jade review the vampire horror film, Sinners (HBO Max). The movie is written and directed by Ryan Coogler. Set in 1932 in the Mississippi Delta, the film stars Michael B. Jordan in dual roles as criminal twin brothers who return to their hometown to start again where they are confronted by a supernatural evil. The film co-stars Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton (in his film debut), Jack O'Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller, and Delroy Lindo. Our hosts also discuss Coogler's impressive film resume and the unique rules of vampire lore the film establishes. Buckle in for another episode of "Our Taste is Trash."
Mini-series Part 2: The Safehouse of NeutralityIn this episode, Maureen continues the deep dive into how whiteness shape-shifts—this time through the soft power of institutional neutrality. From school boards banning books to nonprofits redirecting equity funds, neutrality is used as a strategy, not a stance. With help from Audre Lorde and Ta-Nehisi Coates, Maureen explores how whiteness hides inside “objectivity,” “professionalism,” and “donor comfort”—shielding itself from critique while punishing disruption. We also return to the film Sinners, where vampires can't feed unless invited in—a sharp metaphor for how institutions drain labor and integrity under the guise of collaboration and care. This episode is an invitation to notice how neutrality shows up in your body, your choices, and your leadership—and to replace silence with principled transparency. In this episode we explore:The DEI pullback across schools, nonprofits, and philanthropyHow neutrality protects whiteness by disguising harm as harmonyAudre Lorde's warning about the master's tools and institutional complicityTa-Nehisi Coates on policy, legality, and the false myth of apolitical violenceWhy discernment and transparency are tools of liberatory practiceThis week's reflection:Where do I use the language of “neutrality,” “professionalism,” or “objectivity” to avoid discomfort? What's the cost of that avoidance—and who pays it?Where have I been complicit in protecting the institution rather than disrupting the harm? When have I confused conflict avoidance with actual care?Support the showThis episode was created with deep love, and deep thanks to the frameworks and tools within Cultivating Intersectional Leadership, a course I co-created with Diedra Barber. CIL isn't just a training. It's a transformative journey—one that supports individuals and organizations in making the systemic, strategic, and spiritual shifts needed to build something different. Something rooted in justice. Something aligned with who we say we want to be. You're invited to learn more or inquire about participation at:
Braga, King, and Ski talk Sinners, the Ryan Coogler movie about vampires set in the South in the 1930s. Michael B Jordan plays twin gangsters who open a juke joint in their hometown when vampires show up to kill the vibe. It's a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. Is it any good? Listen!

This week, we jam through Ryan Coogler's ambitious vampire blues-horror set in 1932 Mississippi. Sinners isn't your average blood-sucker flick—it's a visceral, soulful tale of identity, community, and the cost of cultural exploitation. Its lush visuals, haunting blues score, and powerful performances—especially Michael B. Jordan's dual turn—make it one memorable ride. Tangents include: Tacotopia, incels, fireflies, Tawny's Nope-like work event, and how to use ChatGPT to cut back (or quiet) alcohol! Trust us—this one sinks its teeth in.Sinners (2025)Director: Ryan CooglerTawny's rating: 3.89/5Miriam's rating: 4.85/5Send us a textSupport the showAll things TCHF: https://linktr.ee/twochicksandahorrorflickSupport the Show:Join our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/twochicksandahorrorflickTCHF shop: https://twochicks.threadless.com/designs/podcast-cover-art/Connect with Us:Join our horror community on Discord: https://discord.gg/8WBByTQPFXWatch us on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@twochicksandahorrorflickFollow us on Social:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/twochicksandahorrorflickFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/twochicksandahorrorflickTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@twochicksandahorrorflickTwitter: https://twitter.com/twochicksHF Send us your reviews, thoughts, and recommendations: twochicksandahorrorflick@gmail.com or visit our site https://www.twochicksandahorrorflick.com/
Happy New Moon witches! Gemini and Scorpio read How to Kill a Witch By Claire Mitchell and Zoe Venditozzi, the Witches of Scotland, and had a LOT to say about it. The subtitle for this episode might just be "The Blood Magic of the Patriarchy" or "Resistance in the Face of a Witch Hunt" because this book managed to be not just a really fun read about a historical period for Scotland, but also a facilitator of conversation about the struggles of living in the version of America that is on fire. Also, we talk about Sinners and how y'all should watch that (not Gemini though, she's soft)!
This is July 20th's exhortation in which Brian McLain reminds us that even when we're caught in our sin—like David in Psalm 51—God's grace still abounds. When your sins are brought to light by another, take the opportunity to come to the throne of God, confess your sins, and cry out for mercy. Brian and his lovely wife Denise were born and raised in Florida. They have been blessed with six beautiful daughters who fill their home with boundless joy and entertainment. Brian has degrees in Theology and Electrical Engineering and spent 20 years in the Power Industry. The McLains love to sing, dance, read, cook and play games, and they cherish the opportunities they get to serve and host others in their home. Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universesMarvel Studios may be sitting out of this weekend's storied San Diego Comic Hall H, but that hasn't stopped the big news and updates from pouring in. First, last week in a huge move, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige invited a small group of journalists to Marvel Studios' offices where he laid out the future for the next 5 to 7 years for the MCU. The biggest takeaway, arguably, was Feige's cagey hints regarding a likely reset to the universe during the events of Secret Wars, saying, “Reboot is a scary word; Reboot can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. Reset, singular timeline — we're thinking along those lines.” Other tidbits from Feige's comments include a commitment to recasting the X-Men with new actors for their post Secret Wars film, an update on the Mahershala Ali-led Blade film and Sony's mandate that they stay away from a live action Miles Morales until the conclusion of the animated Spider-Verse trilogy. In Marvel news that looks to the more immediate future, director Matt Shakman shared that John Malkovich's role and performance as the Red Ghost has been removed from The Fantastic Four: The First Steps, which opens this week!Superman continues to live up to its name when it comes to its performance, as the superhero flick passed $409 million at the global box office in its second weekend of release. In other news, Variety confirmed Supergirl writer Ana Nogueira has been tapped to pen the Wonder Woman reboot for the DCU in addition to being attached to a live action Teen Titans project for the studio.Lots and lots of trailers hit the interwebs last week, lets run them down and talk about ‘em:Alien: EarthPredator: BadlandsTron: AresStranger Things S5Mortal Kombat IIChristopher Nolan made history by putting tickets on sale for The Odyssey exactly one year before the film's release, marking the first time any movie tickets have sold a full year in advance. Nintendo and Sony's live-action Legend of Zelda movie has cast Bo Bragason as Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link, with Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto revealing the casting choices alongside first-look photos on social media. Taika Waititi is attached to direct a new feature film take on British comic book character Judge Dredd. James Gunn's new SUPERMAN begins from the assumption that audiences already have a working knowledge of the Man of Steel's origin story, his super-skill set, and his romance with Lois Lane. Gunn's film benefits greatly from being able to skip past the basics, but it wouldn't have been possible without Richard Donner's franchise-launching blockbuster SUPERMAN, which codified those basics for the big screen. So this week we're spinning the planet backwards to 1978 and revisiting filmgoers' first introduction to The Last Son Of Krypton — who we don't properly meet until nearly an hour in because, as it turns out, there are about four different movies tucked inside SUPERMAN. We're joined by writer, podcaster, and Supes superfan Chris Klimek to discuss how it all holds together from a modern perspective, and whether Christopher Reeve's definitive performance is enough to overcome all the film's flaws, or just most of them. Then in Feedback, the SINNERS conversation lives on, with a listener detailing its many connections to another film that we considered for that pairing. Please share your thoughts about either and all versions of SUPERMAN, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. Hey Horror Fans!!!In this episode of Mostly Horror, we dive into Sinners, Ryan Coogler's Southern Gothic vampire film that blends horror, history, and culture in a masterful way. This isn't just a vampire story, it's a reminder that art and music are fundamental parts of our human spirit, something many cultures, especially the Black community, have held onto and treasured even in the face of oppression. Especially in the face of oppression. We explore how Sinners reflects this deep connection to creativity as essential to identity and survival, and how it challenges institutions that try to suppress or control that spirit. The film's rich themes and striking imagery gave us a lot to talk about so if you're into horror that's thoughtful and layered, this episode is for you!!! Sooooooo...COME HANG OUT!!! This week on Your Mom's House, Christina and Tommy welcome Dr. Hope Torres, an Austin-based licensed professional counselor specializing in trauma and personality assessment to analyze Tom, Christina, and the entire YMH staff. Before the doctor is in, the Main Mommies update us on what they've been up to, Tommy's on a water fast and Tina looks like a crypto millionaire now. They open the show with a really cool guy yelling at a bartender, before checking out a new video of an old favorite, Dan Pena, who explains why he likes having a painting of Hitler in his office. They also check out a clip of Charlize Theron bragging about banging a dude in his 20's and Christina shares her thoughts on the movie "Sinners" hmmmm hmmmm hmmmm. Dr. Torres then comes in and shares the results of a personality assessment that everyone at Studio Jeans filled out and determines on a scale of normal to traumatized combat vet where Tom, Christina, and the entire staff rank. She walks the YMH crew through their results on the PID-5 personality inventory (DSM‑5). and breaks down the personality domains like anxiety, impulsivity, narcissism, and eccentricity. There's also plenty of insight into how trauma, dissociation, and childhood behaviors can shape adult personality. John welcomes Will Leitch—New York Magazine columnist, MLB.com national correspondent, and author of the acclaimed new novel “Lloyd McNeil's Last Ride”—back to the show to discuss the mix of sports, culture, and politics that mingle on his journalistic playground. A year out from the next World Cup, Leitch weighs in on the Trump administration's capacity to play host to players and fans from countless countries it regularly condemns; what the Thunder-Pacers NBA final says about the future of pro hoops; and why “Sinners” is the movie of year so far and Ryan Coogler is a flat-out genius. Leitch also discusses Lionsgate's plans to turn his latest foray into fiction into a major motion picture, and why Jack Lemon would make the perfect Lloyd McNeil (if he weren't dead, that is).
