Back in 2014, East Coast Host Gary K4AAQ did a HamRadioNow show titled System Confusion, with a look at Yaesu's new C4FM mobile and handheld radios that he had just reviewed for QST. In that show, Gary and some friends from the Charlotte Digital Radio Group did a comparison of DV modes using handheld radios on D-STAR, DMR, P25, and those new C4FM Fusion handheld radio. The episode is our most-watched HamRadioNow show, with nearly 48,000 views (one TAPR DCC show in our catelog has more views). And although the show was a fair look at all the radios, the title alone seems to have cememted Gary's place on Yaesu's black list.Fast-forward to 2023, and Gary has finally added some Fusion radios to his arsonal of mobile, base and handheld radios, with a pair of FTM300s (mobile, base), and an FT5D handheld. In this episode, he reviews the FT5D, with help from hosts David W0DHG and Jim NO1PC, neither of whom see themselves signing on to System Fusion anytime soon. The fun begins with a look at the Yaesu FT5D Facebook Group, where Gary posted what he considered to be some innocent questions about his new radio (search the group for ‘Gary Pearce' to find his posts). That led to some snarky replies from a few members of the group, and the ‘discovery' that he was that Gary Pearce, of System Confusion fame. You be the judge. And bottom line: Gary likes the radio just fine (and the FTM300s). There are a few things he'd do different, and a thing or two he considers a bug or an oversight in design, but no dealbreakers. And at this point he doesn't expect Yaesu to take any of his suggestions into consideration because… well, he's the Confusion guy. And damn proud of it!

If you only know Jenna Wadsworth from her now infamous TIK-TOK video about Trump’s ‘October Surprise’ announcement that he had contracted Covid-19, we’ll show you another side. A side you really ought to see. Jenna is the Democrat opposing Steve Troxler for NC Agriculture Commissioner. She’s currently a Wake County Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisor. Not that there’s anything wrong with that TIK TOK video. It was a biting, ironic reaction to Trump contracting the disease he had dismissed as a hoax, said would be gone by April, and refused to take the steps needed to minimize the damage… and death… it has ended up causing.Well, maybe that depends on how old you are. Trump’s legions hate it (and her), of course… enough to be phoning and posting veiled death threats. But Jenna’s been getting shade from state Democratic leadership, too. TTS host Nanny Jen, on the other hand, found it hilarious, and a perfect example of what TIK TOK is all about for young people. ‘OK Boomer’ generation host Gary Pearce also found it funny, but because it was the first video he’d seen of Wadsworth, he needed to go check YouTube for a few of her other appearances. The TIK TOK video in question was ‘performance’, he says, and maybe not designed to make the best first impression. This show can be that better first impression (and if you’re young, feel free to disagree). When you watch or listen to this program, you’ll see it was mistitled (as Stand Back and Mask Up). We invited Jenna on the show at the last minute, after that TIK-TOK video became, well, notorious. But then we never really talked much about Trump. Jenna owned the show.LINKS:Jenna Wadsworth campaign web site: https://www.jennawadsworth.com/Jenna’s TIK TOK video (on WRAL - the original was taken down): https://www.wral.com/coronavirus/jenna-wadsworths-tiktok-video-on-trumps-coronavirus/19317513/Jenna on UNC-TV/PBS: https://www.pbs.org/video/jenna-wadsworth-on-running-for-nc-agriculture-commissioner-lcc6ud/N&O Article: https://www.newsobserver.com/news/politics-government/article246173660.htmlGet your Booty to the Polls (not Poles) video: https://youtu.be/eTlv2gfrINMReal Women Vote for Trump video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYsvYLfaXF4TTS on YouTube: https://YouTube.com/TriangleTalkShowThis show: https://youtu.be/wWwd1F6JGWUTTS Web Site: https://TriangleTalkShow.com
As we enter debate season in state and national politics, we are looking back at North Carolina's most famous debates and how they compare to today. U.S. Senator Jesse Helms and former North Carolina Governor Jim Hunt were political heavyweights who squared off in 1984. Both men were in their second terms and could not have been any different ideologically. It made for some intense debates where they grilled each other from across the table. On this week’s episode of Tying It Together With Tim Boyum, Tim and Ben talk to the men who made those debates happen. Hear all the behind-the-scenes stories of what was, at the time, the most expensive U.S. Senate race in the nation’s history. Gary Pearce and Carter Wrenn's incredible stories and insight are a must listen! JOIN THE CONVERSATION Do you have any thoughts or questions for Tim? Gary Pearce - Jim Hunt: A Biography As one of Jim Hunt's closest political advisers, Gary Pearce was in a unique position to observe the career of North Carolina's longest-serving governor. In this authorized biography, Pearce draws from his own observations and experience as well as over 30 interviews with Governor Hunt and more than 50 interviews with friends, family, staffers, political allies, and opponents. The book covers Hunt's rise to prominence and his four successful gubernatorial campaigns. It also provides a front-row account of the bitter battle between Hunt and Jesse Helms for the U.S. Senate in 1984. Pearce explains how Hunt was able to come back from that devastating defeat and win two more terms as governor. In his final eight years of office, Hunt pursued progressive goals in a conservative state, became widely known for his initiatives in education, and played an important role in leading North Carolina from being a poor, rural state dependent on tobacco and textiles to becoming a center for high finance and high-tech industry.
