THE SPLENDID BOHEMIANS PRESENT "DOUBLE TROUBLE" - 12 BARS AND THE TRUTH WITH HARVEY MANDEL AND J.B. HUTTO. DOUBLE DOWN!

---

Play Episode Listen Later May 8, 2025 10:22

It seems as though the 12 bar blues structure is an immovable object, an obelisk of sacred, ritualistic, totemic authority. But the form contains multitudes of variety. Here are two examples of the plasticity of that container, which holds the magic blues elixir and can pour it smoothly, or have it gush out, uncontrollably, like a tidal wave. So, be careful when you put your lips to the chalice … the edges can be sharp, and the liquid it delivers may be too intoxicating! Up first, we have Harvey Mandel, the “Snake”- a guitar wizard, brandishing and slashing his ax-cutlass like a pirate, as he boards equilibrium's frigate docked inside your ear canal, with his own composition, 4pm; then, JB Hutto and the Hawks stagger through “Too Much Alcohol” like drunkards in search of another, much needed pint of medicine - with his razor sharp slide work JB illustrates those sensations perfectly, with an insistent, whimpering pulse.HARVEY MANDELIn 1967, Samuel Charters, for Vanguard records, in an early effort to reveal and showcase the second generation of Chicago's blues scene,  produced harmonica master, Charley Musselwhite's first album STAND BACK! HERE COMES CHARLEY MUSSELWHITE'S SOUTHSIDE BAND, and caused a literal big bang in the hearts and minds of American youth. This was Harvey Mandel's first recording, and launched the notable guitar slinger for hire's 60 year career, going on to join Canned Heat, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, recording many solo efforts, and landing one step away from becoming a Rolling Stone.   Known as “the King of Sustain,” our track, 4pm, showcases the longest sustained electric guitar note at age 21, a feat copied by Jimi Hendrix two years later. Harvey's inventive style is trademarked, and you can hear those clarion notes ringing out like a buzz saw, transitioning from one amazing improvisation to the next. JB HUTTO AND THE HAWKSThe next cut, TOO MUCH ALCOHOL, also on the Vanguard label - featured on 1966's Chicago / Blues / Today! Sounds almost like it could have been recorded in the previous century, when, fresh off the farm, players were captured in their first big city outings on lo-fi recordings - it's that raw and spiky. And, yet, both Mandel and Hutto were breathing the same mid-60s Chicago air. JB's slide style was influenced by Elmore James, of DUST MY BROOM acclaim, and he carried that torch forward. The son of a preacher from South Carolina, Hutto made his way to Chicago after his father's death in the early 50s, but ended up working as a janitor for 11 years, until, in the mid 60s, he was discovered and unleashed on the world by Vanguard.

Central banks stand back on looming trade chaos

Kia ora,Welcome to Thursday's Economy Watch where we follow the economic events and trends that affect Aotearoa/New Zealand.I'm David Chaston and this is the international edition from Interest.co.nz.And today we lead with news it's a big day of data locally with our Q4-2024 GDP result out later this morning, preceded by the Fonterra half year result. Either may have market-moving implications. But a few minutes ago, the US Fed released its latest monetary policy review and projections, the dot plot indications and forecasts, which suggest they see higher inflation in the year ahead (now 2.7% from 2.5% and a smaller economic expansion (1.7% from 2.1%). They also expect a higher jobless rate. They see two rate cuts this year. Nine of the 19 policymakers expect it to be in the 3.75%-4.00% range by the end of 2025.But at this meeting there was no policy rate change. In contrast, the AtlantaFed's GDPNow tracking suggests the US economy is now contracting at a -1.8% rate. Apart from the pandemic period, that would be their worst since the GFC.After two strong weeks of mortgage application growth, but mostly driven by refinance activity, last week there was a pull back with volumes falling -6.2%. But with the rise in US benchmark interest rates, and the consequent rise in the 30 year home loan rates (their first rise in nine weeks), perhaps this isn't much of a surprise. Still, overall activity is now +6% higher than year-ago levels.Tariffs and tariff threats are raising prices for basic commodities. For example, American steel is up +27% just from February 7, 2025. There is no way that won't have an inflationary impact there. Thinks cars. Interestingly with international steel diverted, these costs will be lower elsewhere, so the core competitiveness of American-made products are probably going to weaken noticeably. Chinese steel prices are back to where they were in 2017.Across the Pacific, Japanese exports rose +11.7% in February from the same month a year ago and this was the second best rise since December 2022 and much better than the +7.8% rise in February 2024. Still it wasn't quite as strong as expected.Japanese machinery orders rose +19.8% in January from the same month a year ago (up to ¥3.27 bln from ¥2.73 bln in January 2024.)The Bank of Japan kept its key short-term interest rate at around 0.5% during its March meeting, maintaining it at its highest level since 2008 and in line with market expectations. It was a unanimous decision and a cautious stance, focusing on assessing the impact of rising global economic risks on Japan's fragile recovery. They noted ongoing uncertainties in the domestic economic outlook, including trade policies and global conditions. The central bank of Indonesia held its benchmark interest rate at 5.75% during its March 2025 meeting, as expected. They have had only one -25 bps rate cut in 2025 which took their policy rate back to where it was for most of 2023. Recently their inflation rate fell to only +0.8%. And there was a sell-off on their stock exchange earlier in the week. So this 'hold' may be their last. The financial instability in Indonesia is a bit of a worry, especially for its neighbour, Australia. In Turkey, their autocratic president is feeling increasingly vulnerable. He has moved against his main rival with trumped-up charges and the instability has caused the Turkish currency to dive - again. Inflation is running at 39% still but it is falling. And their central bank keeps cutting their policy rate, now down to 42.5%.The World Meteorological Organisation's latest report, for 2024, is a sobering read. New Zealand may be situated in a climate sweet-spot but that isn't the case for almost all our trading partners. CO2 levels in the planet's atmosphere are now at an 800,000 year high. The future won't be like the past. The main way it will hit our pockets is through insurance costs. The UST 10yr yield is now at 4.28%, up +1 bp from yesterday at this time. The price of gold will start today at just on US$3034/oz and down a net -US$2 from yesterday.Oil prices are up +50 USc from yesterday at just on US$67.50/bbl in the US and the international Brent price is at just over US$71/bbl.The Kiwi dollar is now at 57.9 USc and down -30 bps from this time yesterday. Against the Aussie we are unchanged at 91.4 AUc. Against the euro we are also unchanged at 53.2 euro cents. That all means our TWI-5 starts today just on 67.2, and -10 bps softer. The bitcoin price starts today at US$84,613 and up +3.3% from this time yesterday. Volatility over the past 24 hours has again been moderate at +/- 2.1%.Join us for the Q4-2024 GDP result at 10:45 am this morning. And before that, we will have the Fonterra half year update. You can find links to the articles mentioned today in our show notes. You can get more news affecting the economy in New Zealand from interest.co.nz.Kia ora. Charlie Musselwhite & Elvin Bishop: A Lifetime Playing the Blues

A Breath of Fresh Air

Charlie Musselwhite and Elvin Bishop, two towering legends in the blues world, have carved their places in music history through decades of innovation, collaboration, and a shared love for the blues. Both emerged from the heart of Chicago's thriving 1960s blues scene, though they took distinct paths that would eventually lead to an unforgettable partnership. Musselwhite, born in Kosciusko, Mississippi, and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, grew up surrounded by the rich musical traditions of Delta blues, country, and gospel. Moving to Chicago in the early 1960s, he quickly became part of the city's electric blues explosion, playing alongside legends like Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf. His 1967 debut album, Stand Back! Here Comes Charley Musselwhite's Southside Band, was a groundbreaking success, blending traditional blues with elements of jazz, rock, and country, and establishing him as one of the foremost harmonica players in the world. Over the years, Musselwhite's deep, soulful harmonica playing and gritty, heartfelt vocals earned him multiple Grammy Awards and Blues Music Awards, solidifying his place as a key figure in the preservation and progression of blues music. Elvin Bishop, born in California and raised in Oklahoma, brought his own unique style to the blues. Influenced by the sounds of country and rhythm and blues, Bishop's guitar playing drew from his Southern roots, blending blues with rock and country in a way that was both electrifying and soulful. After moving to Chicago to attend the University of Chicago, Bishop found himself immersed in the local blues scene, joining forces with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band in the early 1960s. His time with the band was pivotal, as they helped pioneer the fusion of blues and rock, which would soon come to define much of the music of that era. Bishop's solo career took off in the 1970s, highlighted by the massive hit “Fooled Around and Fell in Love” (1976), which remains a classic of the rock and blues genres. Over the course of his career, Bishop has released more than 20 albums, receiving critical acclaim for his fiery guitar work, playful lyrics, and his seamless blending of blues, boogie-woogie, country, and rock. The collaboration between Musselwhite and Bishop brought together two titans of blues who shared a deep respect for the genre's traditions while continuously pushing its boundaries. The pair had crossed paths many times throughout their careers, but their formal collaboration came to full fruition with the release of their album 100 Years of Blues (2020). The album, steeped in the authenticity of their combined experience, features raw, unfiltered blues with a modern twist. Their chemistry, honed over years of friendship and mutual admiration, shines through on every track, with Musselwhite's masterful harmonica complementing Bishop's electrifying guitar riffs and distinctive vocals. Together, Charlie Musselwhite and Elvin Bishop represent a unique blend of two blues journeys that began in the same place but evolved along different paths. Whether playing in a stripped-down duo format or backed by a full band, their collaboration embodies the timelessness of the blues while showcasing the creative innovation that has kept the genre alive and thriving for over half a century. Today, they continue to perform and record, keeping their sound fresh, vital, and deeply rooted in the authentic blues tradition, ensuring that their legacy will influence future generations of musicians and fans alike.

You can download the MP3 to see how limited my creative skills are, even when using advanced AI.The lyrics are mine and include the following:[Verse]That Was The Week No time to be Meek The goal is to Seek The Next Big Thing [[Chorus]That Was The Week That Was The Week Stand Back Think Big Dig Deep That Was The WeekI'm starting with this in honor of the essay of the week written by Rohit Krishnan - “Whither Utopia”. Rohit charts the rise of utopian ideas (before that was a pejorative term), and the fall of utopian thinking. Toward the end of the essay he states:Instead of grand narratives the focus became on micro narratives, skepticism of rational progress, and, perhaps consequently, a reliance on technology to be the answer.Micro narratives pervade technology today, while macro narratives are frowned upon or described as dangerous. OpenAI has become a magnet for hostility to big ideas and transformative technologies.Rohit points out that technology may have obviated the need for large social thinking about organizing the world. I think that may be a temporal anomaly. As AI improves productivity and frees humans to have more leisure time (in the negative lexicon, “eats jobs”), the macro narrative around wealth distribution is likely to raise its head loudly. So the theme this week is “Stand Back, Think Big, Dig Deep.”It seems very likely that AI, or at least the LLM version we are experiencing now, will remove hours and hours of monotonous work from many humans each week. It seems very likely that the world will become cleverer as Apple introduces AI to the iPhone in Junes WWDC, and Android follows suit. Billions of us will have a ready-made, multi-skilled assistant. Increasingly, it will be able to carry out tasks and report results. It also seems likely that physical beings running computers with this AI embedded, will be capable of real-world tasks. And it seems likely that we will be able to raise science to a new level, as the Chinese diabetes technology reported below demonstrates. Oh, and the entire world will have access to these new skills and tools. The trend will be towards them being free.We are on the verge of an era of enormous advancement in what we can collectively do.So, this is not a time for fear, complaints, or accusations. it is a time to get stuff done.PWC adopting ChatGPT and Apple reportedly doing so are early signals of a new technical revolution.China's $47 billion semiconductor fund (see below) will undoubtedly be able to leverage AI to make advanced semiconductors faster than we made the first ones. The new world will challenge all of today's institutions and require new social arrangements, both globally and locally, as the earth flattens from an economic and demographic point of view and human demands regarding work are reduced. You can't have rapid technical s***s without equally dramatic social s***s. Rohit's historical survey of utopian thinkers demonstrates that all greatly impacted how societies evolved. This generation needs to ask some big questions, dig deep for answers, and do so from an overview of where we are and where we want to go. This is a public episode. Does justice wear a blindfold, or does it peek? The recent sentencing of Enrique Tarrio, the former leader of the Proud Boys, for his part in the Capitol attack, throws this question into stark relief. Join us for an intricate exploration of the implications of his 22-year sentence, as we break down the peculiarities of the judge's tendency for downward departures in sentencing and its potential effect on similar crimes.Media, crime, or punishment - which conquers the spotlight? The conspicuous disparities in media coverage of the January 6th sentencing presents an interesting discourse. Particularly, the racial undertones in Tarrio's 20+ year sentence, and the little to no coverage on the convictions of other members of the Proud Boys. Further implicated is the case of a Georgia man charged with Rico, making attempts to transfer his case to a federal court where cameras don't hold sway. A crisis is roiling beneath the surface of America's education system. The introduction of entities like PragerU and the nine one seven society into public school curriculum raises alarming concerns. Let's unpack the potential impact of such measures on our educational institutions, the looming threat of our polarized political climate, and the dire need for accountability. As we cap this discussion, we take a hard look at the rhetoric of Rhina Santis, the ominous potential for increased violence against the black community, and the pressing urgency for holding those in power accountable.Support the showhttps://www.buzzsprout.com/2003879/supportFollow our show's hosts on Twitter: twitter.com/@CoolTXchicktwitter.com/@Caroldedwinetwitter.com/blackknight10ktwitter.com/@pardonpodSubscribe to Ty's substack:https://theworldasiseeit.substack.com/Support Our Sponsor:Eucalyptus Sheets (Recommended):Sleep Mask (I use this every night)Eucalyptus ComfortorAdjustable Eukalyptus Pillow

This episode of the Inclusive Life Podcast is an intimate conversation between Nicole and two members of her Inclusive Life team, Christina Hernandez and Laura Halpin. We convened to talk about our personal responses to the overturn of Roe v. Wade. We began with our own reactions, exploring our immediate sense of how each of our lives and our loved ones will be impacted. The Dobbs v. Jackson decision impacts all of us, and yet it is vital that we place this decision in a historical, social, and political context: the overturning of Roe v Wade is a massive step in a long history of reproductive oppression targeting Black, LGBTQ+, and other marginalized communities, who will be — and already are – most harmed by the protections that Roe v. Wade ensured. Forced pregnancy is a human rights violation, defined by the United Nations as a crime against humanity. Without access to abortion, all people with a uterus lose their ability to control their own destiny. We are seeing the immediate and chilling effects as it interferes with people, including children, getting the protection, health care, and medications they need. The political landscape has shifted dramatically in the past few weeks as Supreme Court decisions have eroded many of our basic rights. And we know that more rights are on the chopping block. In this conversation, Nicole refers to Clarence Thomas's “stand back and stand by” concurring opinion in which he offers a road map for what the court will overturn next: the right to contraception (Griswold v. Connecticut), same-sex consensual relations (Lawrence v. Texas), and same sex marriage (Obergefell v. Hodges). We must remember – in our desire to respond in the chaos created by this decision – there is a web of reproductive health and reproductive justice organizations working to connect folks in need of reproductive care with protection and services. This is no time to reinvent the wheel which has the likely outcome of putting people in need of abortions at incredible risk. Voting is essential, but we must not stop there. If we are not mobilized beyond voting, we are as good as giving up. As Nicole shared, “Our actions need to be aligned with our values.” Values without action are empty and meaningless. At Inclusive Life, we know that we cannot act effectively or sustainably alone. We must be embedded in community, working against the forces that are designed to keep us isolated and fragmented. And so, in the next weeks, we will be creating a structure to build community around the strategies for the ground war ahead previously defined by Nicole. We are eager to tap into the expertise and leadership of Inclusive Life members. We are in this fight for the long haul because we must win.   Pertinent Links: • The War on Our Bodies: The Phase of Cold Clarity • There's No Equity Without Reproductive Justice from the Adaway Group • Operation Save Abortion: It's Not a March, It's Your Training Day a day long training offered by Abortion Access Front on Sunday, July 17th.
