Hay coches con un encanto especial. Otros con una tecnología adelantada a su tiempo. También los hay que marcaron un camino... y por último, modelos que, pese a ser poco conocidos, fueron claves en la historia. ¿A qué grupo pertenece este NSU Ro80? ¡A todos! Un coche verdaderamente excepcional… Conocí este coche en una colección de cromos… ¡y me enamoré de él! Me llamó la atención su estética. Pero me intereso más cuando comencé a investigar sobre su motor, su bastidor y más tarde, sobre la compra de la marca NSU por parte de VW y lo que supuso al final, la salvación de VW y la muerte de NSU… cosas de la vida. El NSU Prinz nace como un modesto utilitario con motor de moto, bicilíndrico de 583 cm3 y 20 CV, tuvo éxito incluso en competición. Su bajo peso, su buena maniobrabilidad y sus motores, que en el TTS llegaron a los 998 cm3 y 70 CV, le hicieron un arma muy eficaz en la categoría de “hasta 1.000 cm3”. Diseñaron un coche revolucionario por muchos motivos: Aerodinámica muy afinada, bastidor muy moderno, con tracción delantera, transmisión semiautomática y un motor rotativo del tipo Wankel. Estamos hablando del precioso NSU Ro80. El pequeño tamaño del motor Wankel permitía un capó muy bajo, ventaja que el diseñador del Ro80, Claus Luthe, supo aprovechar. ¿No os suena Claus Luthe? El coche era muy aerodinámico, con un CX de 0,355 que ya quisieran para sí muchos coches actuales. Lo que más destacaba era la luminosidad y la visibilidad que permitía… Decíamos al comenzar que este modelo era muy adelantado a su tiempo… ¿quizás demasiado? En esos momentos el motor Wankel parecía una panacea: Más ligero, sin vibraciones y muy potente. El del R080 contaba con dos rotores de 497 cm3 cada uno, tenía una relación de compresión de 9,5 a 1, alta para su tiempo y conseguía la potencia máxima a 5.500 rpm, en régimen moderado para un Wankel. El coche se lanzó en 1967 y tuvo un enorme éxito, incluso fue “CAR OF THE YEAR”, un título muy prestigiosos en esos tiempos…. Pero su éxito duró más o menos un año. Después llegaron los problemas. El motor Wankel consumía gasolina como si le fuese la vida en ello y, a partir de poco más de 20.000 km, muchos se averiaban y tenían fugas en los segmentos de los rotores. En esos tiempos Volkswagen compró varias marcas, entre ellas Audi y NSU, esta última, con dificultades financieras. Y las compró para rescatarla… pero resultó que fue más bien NSU quien rescató a VW. Y es que a VW el NSU Ro80 les entusiasmo del todo… del todo, salvo el motor. Y pensaron en hacer un Ro80 con motor Volkswagen convencional de 4 cilindros. El mayor mérito del este K70 y sobre todo del Ro80 es que la tecnología de su bastidor era tan buena que VW decidió utilizarla en el tan deseado sucesor del VW que no fue otro que el Golf. Por eso, de alguna manera, NSU y en concreto el Ro80 fueron la salvación para VW que llevaba décadas buscando un sucesor a su exitoso, pero ya muy anticuado, “Escarabajo” y todos sus sucesores y evoluciones como los Tipo 3 y Tipo 4, Escarabajos “venidos a más”. Decíamos al comenzar que hay coches con un encanto especial, que nacieron con una tecnología adelantada a su tiempo, que marcaron un camino... y que, pese a ser poco conocidos, fueron claves en la historia. Creo que tras este vídeo queda claro que el Ro80 cumple todas esas premisas, lo que le convierten en un coche excepcional. Y como en su tiempo fue denostado, incluso hubo quienes cambiaron su motor, hoy día como clásicos tienen un valor incalculable… Coche del día. He elegido un coche que tuve… pero no disfrute. Se trata del Simca 1.000 Rallye, ¡ojo! del fabricado en España desde 1970 con motor 1.294 cm3 de 61 CV, lejos de los 103 CV que alcanzó el Simca Rallye III francés de 1977, eso sí, mucho más feo, porque a este coche los faros cuadrados le sentaban fatal.
