Legislative leaders recently announced state employee raises as part of an initial budget agreement, but how much workers will receive will vary greatly depending on what they do for state government. The State Employees Association of North Carolina, better known as SEANC, says the 3% raise for most state employees is "not going to cut it" amid inflation and higher healthcare premiums. And while some workers like correctional officers, state law enforcement officers and teachers would get more, other hard-to-fill positions appear to be left out. WUNC News' Colin Campbell spoke with SEANC executive director Ardis Watkins about the reaction across state agencies to the pay proposal. She also addressed concerns about the elimination of vacant positions, decreasing staffing levels even as North Carolina's population grows.

A group of high school and college students want state lawmakers to crack down on the loosely regulated sales of vaping products. They're pushing for action on a bipartisan bill filed last year to regulate retailers that sell tobacco and vape products and ban sales to people under age 21. The legislation has been parked for months in the Rules committees without a hearing. The Tobacco 21 Coalition Youth Council recently came to the legislature to push for movement on the bill. UNC-Chapel Hill student Taylor Ward and Lake Norman Charter School student Pranika Senthil joined WUNC News' Colin Campbell to talk about the effort and why the regulations are needed to protect young people.

The Quiet Acceleration Toward a Plant-Powered Planet "Social change often feels glacial, incremental, fragile, and at risk of slipping backward. History shows that transformation rarely moves in a straight line. Instead, it unfolds in waves, from slow adoption to steady accumulation, and then, suddenly, acceleration. Small shifts compound until they push entire systems past a tipping point. Today, as we confront converging ecological and social crises, the question is no longer whether change is possible, but when it will begin to cascade." Duke Energy says it needs to increase your power bill, and the fate of that request will soon be decided by a commission that recently changed to a Republican majority. The N.C. Utilities Commission has been holding a series of public hearings about Duke Energy's plan to increase residential rates by up to 18 percent over the next two years. Duke says the rate increase is needed to keep up with higher demand for electricity and the need for a more modern grid that can handle storms with fewer outages. To learn more about what's happening at the Utilities Commission and the energy policy landscape more broadly, WUNC's Colin Campbell spoke with state Sen. Jay Chaudhuri, D-Wake, and Dan Crawford, senior director of public affairs for the N.C. League of Conservation Voters.
Have you ever thought, I know what to do… so why am I still not doing it?In this episode, Amy sits down with behavior change expert and high performance coach Dr. Howie Jacobson to unpack the deeper reasons habits feel so hard to change. They explore why willpower and insight are often not enough, how your environment shapes behavior, and how hidden "implicit memories" can quietly drive your choices without you even realizing it.If you've ever felt guilty that even the fear of Alzheimer's hasn't been enough to make change stick, this conversation will be a relief. Dr. Howie explains exactly why fear is the wrong fuel for lasting behavior change — and what works instead. This conversation is especially powerful if you've ever felt frustrated by the gap between knowing and doing. You'll hear why some habits are less about food, discipline, or motivation — and more about old survival strategies your brain never updated. And why that's actually good news.Dr. Howie Jacobson has spent decades studying human behavior and motivation. He co-authored Whole with Dr. T. Colin Campbell, Proteinaholic with Dr. Garth Davis, and has worked with leaders, health coaches, and everyday people trying to close the gap between who they are and who they want to be. Amy met him at the Neural World Retreat hosted by Drs. Dean and Ayesha Sherzai — and has been trying to get him on the podcast ever since. In this episode, Amy and Dr. Howie discuss:Why insight alone doesn't create behavior changeHow old survival patterns can show up in present-day habitsWhat may actually be underneath "I know what to do, I'm just not doing it"Better questions to ask instead of "What's wrong with me?"How curiosity produces as much dopamine as food, sex, or cocaineWhat To Listen For[00:00] Why insight alone is not enough[03:01] The power of environment over willpower[10:03] Explicit vs. implicit memory[12:45] The knowing-doing gap explained[15:10] Why some behaviors are really old survival strategies in disguise[25:58] Why fear of Alzheimer's isn't enough to create lasting lifestyle change[27:15] The “fire alarm” and threat-detection in your brain [33:20] Why fear is not a long-term motivator [33:41] Defend mode vs. discover modeListen if:You feel stuck in habits you thought you'd have changed by nowYou're worried about brain health or have a family history of Alzheimer'sYou're tired of relying on willpower — or guilt — to motivate changeYou want to understand the deeper emotional drivers behind your behaviorYou're ready for a more compassionate and effective path to lasting changeResources:Take the "Is It Just Brain Fog?" Williamston accountant and minister Patricia Smith pulled off an upset in this month's primary over a six-term incumbent known for crossing party lines.Rep. Shelly Willingham, D-Edgecombe, was one of three moderate Democrats who helped give House Republicans what they call a “working supermajority” and lost their primaries. Willingham had survived previous attempts to unseat him in a primary, and while Stein endorsed a challenger to Rep. Carla Cunningham in Charlotte, he didn't make any endorsements in the race to represent Edgecombe, Martin and Bertie counties. WUNC News' Colin Campbell spoke with Smith about her campaign, her concerns with Willingham's voting record, and some tense moments at the polls.

North Carolina's primary brought rebukes to incumbent legislators in both parties, including a razor-thin margin in the closely watched GOP primary challenge to Senate leader Phil Berger. Why did voters reject some longtime leaders in state politics? Why did Berger's home county turn against him in favor of Sheriff Sam Page? And what's next in the vote-counting process and this year's legislative session? To sort through the results, WUNC News' Colin Campbell spoke with Adam Wagner, who covers politics for the North Carolina Newsroom.

The New Dietary Guidelines: More Triangle Than Pyramid? Those paying attention during the past few weeks will have probably noticed that the recently released 2025–2030 guidelines have provoked a large press response and widespread feedback from doctors, scientists, and concerned citizens. This is the fifth episode in a new season of our Main Street NC series. We're visiting communities across the state to hear from local leaders about the issues and challenges they're facing.About 20 beach houses have recently collapsed into the ocean in Buxton on the Outer Banks. Local leaders there say the cause isn't just climate change or sea-level rise. They blame a deteriorating jetty installed by the U.S. Navy decades ago to protect a Cold War submarine monitoring station. Local and federal officials have responded to the rapid erosion by promising beach renourishment and jetty repairs, but those projects might not be a long-term solution for one of North Carolina's most fragile beach communities. To learn more about Buxton's beach erosion problems and what comes next, WUNC News' Colin Campbell visited the community and spoke with Buxton Civic Association President Heather Jennette and Vice President Brian Harris.
This is the fourth episode in a new season of our Main Street NC series. We're visiting communities across the state to hear from local leaders about the issues and challenges they're facing.A few years ago, the Coharie Indian Tribe launched an effort to clean out debris from the Great Coharie River near their headquarters in Sampson County. That led to a unique recreation and tourism initiative where members of the Coharie Tribe lead visitors on guided kayaking trips down the river. WUNC News' Colin Campbell recently hopped in a kayak to learn more about how the program brings tourists to Sampson County, while creating revenue, jobs and a heightened public profile for the 3,000-member American Indian group. Tribal Administrator Greg Jacobs and Coharie River director Philip Bell also discussed the tribe's history, programs and its hopes to eventually join the Lumbee Indians in obtaining federal recognition.

Lianna Levine Reisner, MSOD, is building a multicultural movement for health as President and Network Director of Plant Powered Metro New York, an organization she co-founded in 2019 to empower local communities to prevent and reverse chronic disease through evidence-based, plant-based nutrition. To address her family's health challenges, Lianna had been searching for clear, evidence-based nutritional guidelines that made sense for her family. The writings of T. Colin Campbell, PhD, and his colleagues made a compelling case for whole food, plant-based nutrition, helping her to lose 20% of her body weight, reverse endometriosis and hormonal imbalances, and heavily reduce her allergies and skin issues, among many other benefits. Hunter College NYC Food Policy Center honored Lianna as a 40 Under 40 Rising Star in Food Policy in 2022. Lianna holds a certificate in Plant-Based Nutrition from the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies and eCornell, and she is a certified Vegan Lifestyle Coach and Educator through Main Street Vegan Academy. She is also a member of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. The North Carolina Chamber serves as the voice for businesses large and small in this state, and when it endorses or opposes legislation, state lawmakers from both parties take notice. To get an update on the NC Chamber's advocacy efforts in 2025 and what's ahead in 2026, WUNC's Colin Campbell visited the group's office to speak with president and CEO Gary Salamido. Salamido also weighed in on the ongoing battle between House and Senate Republicans over scheduled income tax cut triggers and the broader budget stalemate, and provided an update on the Chamber's new program to help small businesses access affordable employee health insurance.

Gov.Josh Stein is wrapping up his first year in office. It's been a year marked by hurricane recovery efforts in Western North Carolina and fights with the legislature over taxes, Medicaid and more in Raleigh. He joined WUNC's Colin Campbell to discuss the big issues of 2025 and what's ahead next year, from the primary to property taxes
The 2026 campaign season has officially kicked off (although many campaigns have been going for months now) with the start of candidate filing. With the primary less than three months away, we're digging into the races worth watching, from Congress to legislature to the Wake County district attorney. Two political reporters, Adam Wagner of the NC Newsroom and Dawn Vaughan of The News & Observer, join WUNC's Colin Campbell for the conversation.
Local news is a tough business these days, with journalists routinely laid off and small-town newspapers closing up shop. But North Carolina's journalism scene does have success stories. WUNC's Colin Campbell spoke with the leaders of two locally owned media companies that are seeing growth. David Woronoff owns The Pilot, a thriving newspaper in Southern Pines, and magazines including Business North Carolina and Walter. Kyle Villemain started The Assembly in 2021, and it's since grown to a staff of 43 people producing in-depth stories on all things North Carolina. They discussed the business models that can work to support journalism and how they're approaching underserved communities.
Send us a textThis week, I'm inviting you into a conversation that's all about wisdom — not the big, lofty kind, but the kind you can actually live. The kind that helps you walk into the holiday season feeling grounded, intentional, and connected to what matters most.I'm sharing the two principles from Maester T. Colin Campbell that changed the way I think about food and life — and how those same principles can shape the way you show up to Thanksgiving (or any gathering) with more clarity, more grace, and way less stress. If this episode gives you even one spark — one shift, one breath, one aha — share it with someone you love. Forward it, post it, or send it privately to that one friend who could really use a little steadiness this season. Grateful to be walking this Project Weight Loss path with you. At age 88, former Gov. Jim Hunt continues to be a prominent figure in state politics, but the state's growth means that many North Carolinians weren't around during his record 16 years in office. So to better understand what he accomplished and what lessons his political career offers for today's landscape in state politics, WUNC's Colin Campbell spoke with longtime Hunt aide and biographer Gary Pearce. Pearce says Hunt's powers of persuasion helped him expand the influence of the governor's office and improve the state's education system.

North Carolina no longer has any particularly competitive Congressional districts, thanks to the new map passed this week at President Donald Trump's request. To get a better sense for how the new districts will play out in the courts and in next year's midterm landscape, WUNC's Colin Campbell spoke with Western Carolina University political scientist Chris Cooper. Cooper says odds aren't favorable for Democrats to pull off an upset victory in any of the GOP-leaning districts.
Redwood Materials has long dominated EV battery recycling, but what if they could drain every last drop of energy from those batteries before recycling them? I talk with the company's CTO, Colin Campbell, about Redwood Energy, a new division doing just that by deploying used batteries as grid-scale storage at a massive scale. This isn't just a side project; it's a plan to turn a massive wave of incoming used batteries into a key resource for the grid. This is a public episode. The 33-member N.C. House Freedom Caucus notched some major policy victories this year, defeating a proposal from Senate leaders to ban shrimp trawling while getting a gun-rights bill to the governor's desk.WUNC's Colin Campbell spoke with the Freedom Caucus' chairman, Rep. Keith Kidwell, R-Beaufort, to find out how the legislative process unfolded. Kidwell also weighed in on the ongoing budget stalemate, the Freedom Caucus' role in next year's legislative elections, and his work on the new House Select Committee on Government Efficiency.
In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes". Said Benjamin Franklin. What are death and taxes? Arguably, losses. What is trauma and tragedy? I submit they are losses. And I feel we generally go about our lives, day in and day out, trying to avoid losses. Hoping "that doesn't happen to me." And yet, it's going to happen. We will have a financial fall. We will have a once beloved relationship end. We will have a car wreck or house fire or disease. Almost 100% of people will agree it's wise to have money in savings, just in case. Why don't we have emotional understanding and strength in savings, for the loss that will come? My guest is Colin Campbell. On March 14, 2023 Colin and his wife were driving their car, both in the front seats. In the back were their two teenagers, Ruby & Hart. A woman who was driving drunk went through an intersection doing 90 miles per hour and never saw them or braked. She hit the car right at the passenger doors. And Ruby and Hart died that day, while Colin and his wife were able to walk away from the crash. What followed is the dramatic amount of grief you'd likely expect. Colin says, “I always believed, deep in my heart, that my life would just keep getting better and better.” Isn't that all of us? Waking each day hoping and really expecting things to be ok, and we won't get the dreaded call or have the accident ourselves. Now I sure don't want to go about expecting tragedy. But, I have recently gone through the loss of my marriage and family home, two things I literally thought were impossible. I also have nine kids and multiple grandkids. I've lost my arrogance to think “that won't happen to me” and my odds are plenty high that I'll experience more significant loss. What can I be doing now, to be prepared? This is what Colin and I discuss in depth. Colin Campbell is a writer and director for theater and film. He teaches screenwriting at Chapman University and theater at California State Polytechnic University. Campbell's highly anticipated solo performance piece titled Grief, will be performed in Los Angeles and New York City this year. His book that I got ahold of is called Finding the Words: Working Through Profound Loss with Hope and Purpose. Before we get started, let me give you this quote from Colin, “A profound loss is when you lose someone, and I'd add, “or something,” that you feel is entwined intrinsically with your identity. In other words you define yourself partly in terms of this other person or thing.” Sign up for your $1/month trial period at shopify.com/kevin Go to shipstation.com and use code KEVIN to start your free trial.
