Beware all carnivores... and yes, that includes all of us at Faith Unfiltered Podcast. Climate Brewing host, Susan Oxley sits down with Sally Eales to explore the connection between plant-based eating and the climate crisis. Moving beyond headlines about methane and “cow burps,” Sally unpacks the deeper environmental impact of industrial meat production—from land use to rainforest clearing—while grounding the conversation in faith, stewardship, and personal responsibility. This is not an all-or-nothing manifesto, but an invitation to thoughtful, incremental change: eat more plants, do your research, and pay attention to how your choices affect both your body and the planet. Honest about challenges—from Midwest breakfast meats to road-trip convenience stores—Sally offers practical wisdom, humor, and grace for anyone curious about reducing their climate footprint one meal at a time. This is the fifth episode in a new season of our Main Street NC series. We're visiting communities across the state to hear from local leaders about the issues and challenges they're facing.About 20 beach houses have recently collapsed into the ocean in Buxton on the Outer Banks. Local leaders there say the cause isn't just climate change or sea-level rise. They blame a deteriorating jetty installed by the U.S. Navy decades ago to protect a Cold War submarine monitoring station. Local and federal officials have responded to the rapid erosion by promising beach renourishment and jetty repairs, but those projects might not be a long-term solution for one of North Carolina's most fragile beach communities. To learn more about Buxton's beach erosion problems and what comes next, WUNC News' Colin Campbell visited the community and spoke with Buxton Civic Association President Heather Jennette and Vice President Brian Harris.

This is the fourth episode in a new season of our Main Street NC series. We're visiting communities across the state to hear from local leaders about the issues and challenges they're facing.A few years ago, the Coharie Indian Tribe launched an effort to clean out debris from the Great Coharie River near their headquarters in Sampson County. That led to a unique recreation and tourism initiative where members of the Coharie Tribe lead visitors on guided kayaking trips down the river. WUNC News' Colin Campbell recently hopped in a kayak to learn more about how the program brings tourists to Sampson County, while creating revenue, jobs and a heightened public profile for the 3,000-member American Indian group. Tribal Administrator Greg Jacobs and Coharie River director Philip Bell also discussed the tribe's history, programs and its hopes to eventually join the Lumbee Indians in obtaining federal recognition.

The North Carolina Chamber serves as the voice for businesses large and small in this state, and when it endorses or opposes legislation, state lawmakers from both parties take notice. To get an update on the NC Chamber's advocacy efforts in 2025 and what's ahead in 2026, WUNC's Colin Campbell visited the group's office to speak with president and CEO Gary Salamido. Salamido also weighed in on the ongoing battle between House and Senate Republicans over scheduled income tax cut triggers and the broader budget stalemate, and provided an update on the Chamber's new program to help small businesses access affordable employee health insurance.

Gov.Josh Stein is wrapping up his first year in office. It's been a year marked by hurricane recovery efforts in Western North Carolina and fights with the legislature over taxes, Medicaid and more in Raleigh. Two political reporters, Adam Wagner of the NC Newsroom and Dawn Vaughan of The News & Observer, join WUNC's Colin Campbell for the conversation.
Local news is a tough business these days, with journalists routinely laid off and small-town newspapers closing up shop. But North Carolina's journalism scene does have success stories. WUNC's Colin Campbell spoke with the leaders of two locally owned media companies that are seeing growth. David Woronoff owns The Pilot, a thriving newspaper in Southern Pines, and magazines including Business North Carolina and Walter. Kyle Villemain started The Assembly in 2021, and it's since grown to a staff of 43 people producing in-depth stories on all things North Carolina. They discussed the business models that can work to support journalism and how they're approaching underserved communities.

At age 88, former Gov. Jim Hunt continues to be a prominent figure in state politics, but the state's growth means that many North Carolinians weren't around during his record 16 years in office. So to better understand what he accomplished and what lessons his political career offers for today's landscape in state politics, WUNC's Colin Campbell spoke with longtime Hunt aide and biographer Gary Pearce. Pearce says Hunt's powers of persuasion helped him expand the influence of the governor's office and improve the state's education system.

North Carolina no longer has any particularly competitive Congressional districts, thanks to the new map passed this week at President Donald Trump's request. To get a better sense for how the new districts will play out in the courts and in next year's midterm landscape, WUNC's Colin Campbell spoke with Western Carolina University political scientist Chris Cooper. Cooper says odds aren't favorable for Democrats to pull off an upset victory in any of the GOP-leaning districts.
Redwood Materials has long dominated EV battery recycling, but what if they could drain every last drop of energy from those batteries before recycling them? I talk with the company's CTO, Colin Campbell, about Redwood Energy, a new division doing just that by deploying used batteries as grid-scale storage at a massive scale. This isn't just a side project; it's a plan to turn a massive wave of incoming used batteries into a key resource for the grid. This is a public episode. How should you gain consent for ELECTIVE treatments? Is selling in dentistry something to avoid, or an essential part of patient care? How much does emotional intelligence really matter for your success and happiness? Dr. Colin Campbell joins for a powerful episode that dives into consent, sales, and the balance between profit and ethics in dentistry. He also unpacks the huge role of emotional intelligence—not just in clinical practice, but in life. Takeaways Building trust with patients is crucial for effective consent. Consent should be a relationship management exercise, not just a legal formality. Understanding the patient's perspective is key to effective communication. Elective treatments should be approached with caution and ethical considerations. Sales in dentistry is not a dirty word; it's about providing solutions to patients. Emotional intelligence is a vital skill for dentists to develop. Good dentistry is about doing what is best for the patient, not just for profit. Continuous education and self-improvement are essential for success in dentistry. In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes". Said Benjamin Franklin. What are death and taxes? Arguably, losses. What is trauma and tragedy? I submit they are losses. And I feel we generally go about our lives, day in and day out, trying to avoid losses. Hoping "that doesn't happen to me." And yet, it's going to happen. We will have a financial fall. We will have a once beloved relationship end. We will have a car wreck or house fire or disease. Almost 100% of people will agree it's wise to have money in savings, just in case. Why don't we have emotional understanding and strength in savings, for the loss that will come? My guest is Colin Campbell. On March 14, 2023 Colin and his wife were driving their car, both in the front seats. In the back were their two teenagers, Ruby & Hart. A woman who was driving drunk went through an intersection doing 90 miles per hour and never saw them or braked. She hit the car right at the passenger doors. And Ruby and Hart died that day, while Colin and his wife were able to walk away from the crash. What followed is the dramatic amount of grief you'd likely expect. Colin says, “I always believed, deep in my heart, that my life would just keep getting better and better.” Isn't that all of us? Waking each day hoping and really expecting things to be ok, and we won't get the dreaded call or have the accident ourselves. Now I sure don't want to go about expecting tragedy. But, I have recently gone through the loss of my marriage and family home, two things I literally thought were impossible. I also have nine kids and multiple grandkids. I've lost my arrogance to think “that won't happen to me” and my odds are plenty high that I'll experience more significant loss. What can I be doing now, to be prepared? This is what Colin and I discuss in depth. Colin Campbell is a writer and director for theater and film. He teaches screenwriting at Chapman University and theater at California State Polytechnic University. Campbell's highly anticipated solo performance piece titled Grief, will be performed in Los Angeles and New York City this year. His book that I got ahold of is called Finding the Words: Working Through Profound Loss with Hope and Purpose. Before we get started, let me give you this quote from Colin, “A profound loss is when you lose someone, and I'd add, “or something,” that you feel is entwined intrinsically with your identity. In other words you define yourself partly in terms of this other person or thing.” Sign up for your $1/month trial period at shopify.com/kevin Go to shipstation.com and use code KEVIN to start your free trial. North Carolina's Medicaid system is grappling with funding shortfalls, both from the state budget and from the Congressional megabill. The state Department of Health and Human Services says it will reduce provider reimbursement rates and cut coverage for popular weight-loss drugs if state lawmakers don't approve additional funding. And beyond that issue, more funding will be needed in the future to handle new Medicaid work requirements that were part of President Donald Trump's tax and spending bill. That bill also includes potential cuts to the program known as food stamps. WUNC's Colin Campbell sorts through the details with N.C. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Dev Sangvai. Sangvai also provided an update on the availability of COVID-19 vaccines this fall.
The state's most conservative lawmakers have for years formed the House Freedom Caucus, and now there's a similar caucus for legislators on the left. The House Progressive Caucus formed this year and has about a dozen members, as well as a political action committee that will be involved in legislative elections next year. Two caucus members, Reps. Marcia Morey of Durham and Pricey Harrison of Greensboro, spoke with WUNC's Colin Campbell about the caucus' efforts to make a difference in a legislature dominated by Republicans. Note: This episode was recorded prior to the news of conservative activist Charlie Kirk's death in a Utah shooting.

Who's Controlling the Health Narrative? How Media Trends Are Rewriting Public Health In the not-so-distant past, most of our health information came from textbooks, physicians, and peer-reviewed journals. WUNC's Capital Bureau Chief Colin Campbell has been covering North Carolina politics for over a decade across newspapers, digital outlets, and now public radio. Colin shares how his love for broadcasting began as a teenager reading the news at a small station in Virginia, and how that early passion led him into a long career reporting on the people and policies shaping our state. Skye and Brian also dig into the behind-the-scenes of his own weekly podcast — how he chooses stories, brings in voices from across the political spectrum, and balances the immediacy of daily news with deeper conversations. Away from the mic, Colin talks about life in Wendell with his family, finding community in a fast-growing town just outside Raleigh, and what keeps him grounded after long days at the legislature. Plus, new polling numbers from Catawba College, Governor Stein's appointment of a bipartisan task force, yet another General Assembly rematch, the Taylor + Travis cultural moment, and how students are finding creative ways around a new state law in public schools. The Do Politics Better podcast is sponsored by New Frame, the NC Travel Industry Association, the NC Beer & Wine Wholesalers Association, the NC Pork Council, and the NC Healthcare Association.
Can North Carolina's troubled DMV finally turn the corner after years of long lines and finger-pointing about who or what's to blame? Several months into his new job as DMV commissioner, Paul Tine says the agency is now making progress. Staff vacancies are being filled, and the legislature recently approved more staff positions and several new DMV offices. Tine spoke with WUNC's Colin Campbell after State Auditor Dave Boliek's scathing audit report, which found that average DMV wait times have increased to an hour and 15 minutes. He says the agency is already working on many of the issues highlighted in the report.

“Some people might think that honesty boxes are from the past, from a different age, a simpler age, a more honest age, but I would say they're a future thing as well.” – Mark CousinsThroughout the islands and out of way places in Scotland, along the rural roads, at the end of driveways, out on their own with no house nearby, you'll find fresh baked bread, homemade jam, cauliflower, scones, Victoria Sponge Cake, ceramics, you name it. If someone can make it, bake it, grow it or sew it, it may turn up for sale in an “Honesty Box.” Just a wooden or metal box, sometime with a slot, nailed down so it can't be nicked, sometimes an open bowl of money, with a price list of the items and the implicit understanding that if you fancy a shortbread, or a dozen eggs, or a pound of sausages, or a home-knitted hat, you'll leave the money in the Honesty Box. No one is there to watch you. It's a trust thing. An honor thing. North Carolina's 2026 U.S. Senate race officially kicked off as former Gov. Roy Cooper and Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Whatley have formally launched their campaigns for the seat where Sen. Thom Tillis isn't seeking another term. To get a better sense of what we can expect from the campaign and the two leading candidates, WUNC's Colin Campbell sat down with two of the state's top political strategists. Jim Blaine is co-founder of the firm The Differentiators and the former chief of staff to Republican Senate leader Phil Berger, and Kimberly Reynolds is a co-founder of the firm Maven Strategies and former executive director of the N.C. Democratic Party. Blaine and Reynolds expect the high-profile candidates and a big impact on the Senate balance of power could result in a campaign that breaks spending records.
North Carolina's ballot access laws create an uphill battle for third parties seeking to get their candidates on the ballot, requiring more than 14,000 registered voters to sign their petition for access. Five of those parties were on the ballot in last year's election, and six have started the petition process for the 2026 election cycle. But only one party so far has made any serious progress toward getting 14,000 signatures. That's the North Carolina Forward Party, which had amassed 2,200 signatures so far. The Forward Party's chair, Patrick Newton, spoke with WUNC's Colin Campbell about the centrist party founded at the national level by former New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman and former Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang.Newton sees ballot access for the Forward Party as a path for candidates who are too moderate to win a Democratic or Republican primary. Newton also spoke about the party's proposals for election reforms, its work backing candidates at the state and local level, and how the Forward Party compares to last year's “No Labels” party organization.
The job of an EV battery is unforgiving. If its performance slips too far — say, lost acceleration or range — it's probably off to the recycling heap. That's even though it may have plenty of usable life, if only for something less demanding than powering a vehicle. Grid storage is theoretically a gentler job, involving slower discharging and more careful management. Still, repurposing isn't easy. It requires dealing with a mishmash of various makes, models, and levels of quality. And it means competing against the falling price of new, purpose-built storage systems. But a few companies have said they've figured it out, including Redwood Materials, which supplied a second-life data center microgrid this year. So how does second-life storage on the grid actually work? In this episode, Shayle talks to Colin Campbell, chief technology officer of battery recycler Redwood Materials. Colin explains how, in just the past year, the company has found cost-effective ways to repurpose batteries before recycling them. Shayle and Colin cover topics like: What has changed to make repurposing profitable, including better software management and high-volume, low-cost supply Why, for Redwood, second-life batteries only need a short lifespan to be worth it Why second-life systems are especially well-suited for long-duration storage What it takes to compete with the falling prices of new LFP systems Resources: Latitude Media: Crusoe and Redwood Materials are powering a data center with old EV batteries Latitude Media: Millions of EV batteries could retire on solar farms Latitude Media: The challenging economics of battery recycling Credits: Hosted by Shayle Kann.
