ADAM HENLEY on BLAKE'S 7 series oneFirst broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on April 6th 2025.A couple of months ago, a new voice joined us on VISION ON SOUND in the form of ADAM HENLEY, and he introduced himself by talking about both his personal television history and a little bit about THE WEST WING.This went so well, that ADAM felt like making another appearance and, as he'd just finished watching the exciting new Blu-Ray release of the first series of BLAKE'S SEVEN, we thought we'd spend an hour having a bit of a chat about this iconic late 1970s BBC science-fiction series as it gets re-introduced to its long-standing fans and, perhaps a brand new generation eager to explore this fascinating dystopian drama.BLAKE'S SEVEN was a science-fiction series created by TERRY NATION who had been one of the early writers on DOCTOR WHO, for which he created the iconic Daleks, and he had also created the post apocalyptic drama series SURVIVORS for the BBC a few years earlier, so this exploration of a rebellion against the forces of the evil Federation was definitely just the sort of bleak vision of the future that you might expect from him.The series itself lasted for four series and fifty-two fifty minute episodes and ended on a shattering cliffhanger that definitely left its scars on a generation of television viewers just before Christmas 1981.Its first season introduced BLAKE played by GARETH THOMAS and his loyal–ish gang of rebels and freedom-fighters as played by SALLY KNYVETTE as space pilot JENNA, MICHAEL KEATING as lock-picking wizard VILA, DAVID JACKSON as the man-mountain GAN, JAN CHAPPELL as the telepathic alien CALLY, and PAUL DARROW as the enigmatic AVON who would eventually take the leading role as the series progressed. They were helped enormously by the fact that they luckily managed to acquire the super starship LIBERATOR and its wise master computer ZEN, as voiced by PETER TUDDENHAM, and this was how the original SEVEN was made up.Towards the end of the first series, and another devastating cliffhanger that helped give the show an astonishingly high profile at the time, another super computer ORAC was introduced, which changed the dynamic of the show in its second year. The forces of the Federation were mostly represented by JACQUELINE PEARCE as SERVALAN, a powerful and ruthless woman prone to wearing astonishing gowns, and STEPHEN GREIF as TRAVIS, a hate-fuelled leather-clad cyborg with an eyepatch and a gun for a hand, and they crossed swords with BLAKE and his crew on several occasions during the second half of this series.Fans of BLAKE'S SEVEN had been waiting a long time for it to get the Blu-Ray release that they felt it deserved, with many of its special effects updated from their somewhat low-budget and dated roots, and ADAM was one of the enthusiastic early adopters, and was very eager to share his enthusiasm with us today.PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.

THE PODCAST AMLooking back onSolid Gold Soul, I came across some radio memories from WJMO AM Cleveland dating back to 1995 on YouTube. The show featured Solid Gold Soul with David Jackson, which was also broadcasted on WELS-FM in Kinston, NC. I used to listen to Solid Gold Soul frequently and still recall the catchy jingle celebrating classic soul hits from the 60s and 70s. They showcased incredible tracks like Martha Reeves & the Vandellas' “Honey Chile, Third Finger, Left Hand,” which I mistakenly believed was called "Wedding Band." They also played Aretha Franklin's “The House That Jack Built” and Tina Charles' “I'll Go Where Your Music Takes Me.” It puzzles me why radio stations that play such great hits eventually change formats. They often transition to genres like Gospel or Country. I think a station like that could easily incorporate Gospel on Sundays and Country on Saturdays, while still showcasing the beloved soul hits throughout the week. I really miss Solid Gold Soul.I'm Gail Nobles. You're listening to the Podcast AM. A show about the AM Stories on the Cat Bear.

Hailing from Tallahassee, Florida, Dr. Stanley shares his journey from being one of the few Black students in his K-12 classes to attending Florida A&M University, an HBCU that felt like home. His experiences in predominantly white schools and later at an all-Black high school shaped his understanding of the importance of representation and community in education. "Black educators are the shepherds of maintaining the wholeness of Black students." Dr. Stanley reflects on his career, from teaching social studies in Orlando to pursuing a PhD to enact systemic change. He discusses the challenges Black educators face, such as being seen as disciplinarians rather than teachers, and the critical role they play in creating spaces where Black students can see their potential. His book, "Black Educators Matter: The Experiences of Black Teachers in an Anti-Black World," explores these themes and emphasizes the importance of addressing anti-Blackness in educational systems to truly support Black educators and students. That's the best thing I've ever eaten.' We have chosen to differentiate ourselves with flavor, and that comes down to just genetics.” – David Jackson Topics covered include: An introduction to Jackson and Family Tree Farms. An exploration of Jackson's blueberry operation and how they pursue it from the soil up through genetics.A discussion of Family Tree Farms' journey in the blueberry industry over the years, the challenges they've faced and the changes they've made.Crop ReportThe Blueberry Crop Report is an update on crop conditions and markets throughout important blueberry growing areas. Dr. Andy Jackson's The Late and Post-Dictatorship Cinephilia Boom and Art Houses in South Korea (Edinburgh University Press, 2024) examines an unexplored area of South Korean cinema history – the 1985-1997 growth of art film exhibition, consumption, and cinephilia. This moment of heightened interest in art film altered how many Koreans conceptualised cinema and helped pave the way for the critical success of South Korean film. This historical study analyses the cultural, political, social, and economic developments of the post-1985 period that increased interest in European art film. It looks at the interactions of art house exhibitors with cinephile audiences, the media and the state-level administrators responsible for governing the industry. The aim of young cinephiles was nothing less than a bottom-up cultural transformation of a society emerging from three decades of dictatorship. The analysis is based on the previously unheard voices of audiences who participated in the cinephilia. This study is both a history of an era in Korean cinema and an argument about the impact of this period of cultural renewal on the industry. Andy Jackson is an Associate Professor in the Korean Studies programme at Monash University. He is also director of the Monash University Korean Studies Research Hub (MUKSRH) and current convenor of Korean Studies. His key research areas include the history of rebellion in Korea, premodern and modern Korean history, North and South Korean film and popular culture, invented traditions in Korea. Learn more about Monash University's Korean Studies Research Hub here. In the mid-17th Century, Britain dominated the Slave Trade, shipping over 3 million enslaved Africans across the Atlantic. Conditions on board slave ships were inhumane, and large numbers of enslaved men, women, and children died en-route. However, during the 18th and early 19th centuries, certain individuals started to speak up and demand an end to slavery. So who were these courageous pioneers, brave enough to challenge the status-quo? How did they fight the establishments? And what of the enslaved people who made their voices heard against all odds? This is a Short History Of the Abolition of the British Slave Trade. Written by David Jackson.
