I talk with Linda Perret the daughter of legendary comedy writer Gene Perret. Gene was writer for Bob Hope and other greats like Phylis Diller and Slappy White. He is Emmy Award winning writer (three times) as well for the Carol Burnett Show. I've had the privilege of becoming friends and hearing fascinating stories of all these television legends and behind the scenes tv shows many of us remember and loved. Now I want to share some of them with you. Gene Perret is not only a brilliant writer, he still has an amazing sense of humor and a huge heart. He is also the author of the first comedy writing book I purchased when I started thinking about doing comedy. I highly recommend ALL his books available at https://www.comedywritersroom.com
Is to make time to write them. - John Vorhaus I applaud anyone who can follow the Jerry Seinfeld strategy of writing jokes every day. Gene Perret, who's books are my writing bibles, also touts the importance of writing a daily quota. I absolutely recommend this... but I definitely don't do it. I can't manage to sit down and write every day. So, my advice is to write every week. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/comedy-mom/message
We spoke with comedy writing legend Gene Perret about how comedy works, and a lifetime spent writing jokes for the likes of Bob Hope, Carrol Burnet and Phyllus Diller, to name just a few. But he spent a significant portion of his career writing books and teaching about comedy as well. He's on today to speak about his book, The New Comedy Writing Step by Step. Which is still considered by many to be a standard textbook for comedy writing. He's earned three Emmy Awards for his work on The Carol Burnett Show. He wrote for Bob Hope from 1969 until the performer's retirement, serving the last 15 years as his head writer. Gene's television career includes producing Welcome Back, Kotter, Three's Company, and The Tim Conway Show. The list goes on: Mama's Family, All in the Family, Laugh-In, and many others.
