This week, we're revisiting a favorite conversation from this past year - Lynyrd Skynyrd founding member and lead guitarist Rickey Medlocke joins Jay Jay this week on the podcast! Jay Jay & Rickey's history goes as far back as Twisted Sister does - to 1973 - and they've remained friends ever since. Rickey is best known as being the frontman & guitarist for the band Blackfoot, as well as an original member of Lynyrd Skynyrd. He's of Lakota Sioux and Cherokee ancestry, and was inducted into the Native American Music Hall of Fame in 2008. He's heavily involved in supporting the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) Movement, and national efforts to end all violence against American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian women, which you can learn more about via the links below:www.niwrc.orgwww.rickeymedlocke.com/never-run-out-of-roadTune in to hear all about Jay Jay & Rickey's deep history that goes back over 50 years, as Rickey discusses how he's been one of the faces of Southern Rock for decades, and set the standard for the genre.Don't miss this conversation, only on The Jay Jay French Connection: Beyond the Music!A special thank you to our new sponsors, Dimarzio Pickups and Tonequest Report.Produced & Edited by Matthew Mallinger

Monday's first hour.
The boys kick things off with a quick review of the Bulldogs alarmingly large win over GWS, then they tell us their top headlines from the last 24 hours - including a new type of bin in Victoria. Chief puts Ben Stokes and the England Cricket Team in his slaughterhouse, and Howie has organised the Friday Huddle Logies - dishing out awards for the best performances so far in season 2025. Damo was a good samaritan this week, but Chief witnessed the opposite end of the spectrum, then it's time for Chief's Food Quiz - which may just be the most competitive quiz we've ever had. Browny asks the boys about the merits of the Mercy Rule in kids' sport. The boys melt down over Browny's pronunciation of Lynyrd Skynyrd, before whipping through their Hot Tips to make your life better, before Hawthorn's Josh Weddle phones in to talk about his recovery from stress fractures. As we move into full footy mode, Collingwood's wooing of Jack Silvagni could mean there's no money left for some other Pies stars, the boys discuss which team misses out on the finals, we get an insight into what Chief was like as Hawthorn CEO, Howie's going Hindi, and Damo has caused a furore at both Channel 7 and Fox Footy. Adelaide coach Matthew Nicks joins the boys before tonight's big game, Browny has his Top 5 sporting fairytales, and Chief had an awkward encounter with a bloke he'd just potted on live TV. Triple M's Friday Huddle is Mark Howard, Jason Dunstall, Nathan Brown, and Damian BarrettSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
"The K Pop band EXO claimed that one of their concerts in South Korea sold out in less than two seconds. It sounds impossible because you are not being told the entire story. It is a badge of honor for bands to sell out quickly. Other than EXO, who did legitimately sell out the fastest. We will tell you our pick."

What was the most important thing invented in 1973 besides mint chocolate chip ice cream? The correct answer is southern rock. On August 13th, 52 years ago, six youngsters from Jacksonville FL stole their high school P.E. teacher's name and hitchhiked their way on to the rock music scene with their debut album, Pronounced ‘Leh-‘Nérd-‘Skin-‘Nérd. #lynyrdskynyrd #freebird #ronnievanzantGuest Commentators: Sean Borders and Henry FabreListen, like and follow!

In this patriotic edition of The Audio Files, Brad Zerbo and Jaytriot celebrate American music from every angle, mixing rock anthems, punk nostalgia, and country swagger. They kick off by belatedly marking the 4th of July with X's “Fourth of July,” Tom Petty's “American Girl,” and the tongue-in-cheek “United States of Whatever.” Along the way, they share stories of vinyl collections, musical awakenings, and unforgettable live shows. The episode features everything from Kim Wilde's “Kids in America” to Kid Rock's “American Badass” and Neil Diamond's iconic “America.” They reflect on the patriotic surge after 9/11 and play Toby Keith's “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue,” Lynyrd Skynyrd's comeback hit “Red White and Blue,” and Steve Miller Band's “Living in the USA.” Interwoven are lively anecdotes about guitars, recording studios, and the authenticity of New Yorkers. The hosts close with WASP's fiery performance and Hendrix's legendary Woodstock rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner, capturing the spirit, pride, and contradictions of America through music.
"Here is the second show where we play songs you might not know were covers. Often the cover version of a song becomes a bigger hit. And even if you did know the hit was a cover you may not know the original. We will play you a few."

In nearly every case when you see a classic band in concert now, it's not the original line-up. Does that dampen your experience? Many legacy bands currently on the road are down to only one original member--and a few have none. Is it still the band if no one who started that band or wrote the iconic music is involved? Is there a key member whose absence has too great an impact? Rob and Alan discuss those questions and more in this week's episode! We cite some big-name examples, like Rush, Queen, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Yes, Kansas, Asia (who are back in the news with a new line-up and record label), The Beach Boys, and more. First, though, we take a few moments to pay tribute to Brian Wilson, Sly Stone, and Douglas McCarthy (of Nitzer Ebb). "In July of 1962, the Rolling Stones play their first gig in the Marquee Club. The Marquee Club was one of the main venues for 1960s British rock. This week we will discuss the rather interesting history of the Marquee Club."
The legendary Don Barnes, co-founder and frontman of 38 Special, takes us on a riveting journey through five decades of rock and roll stardom. With his signature raspy voice and warm storytelling style, Barnes reveals the fascinating origin of the band's name—a police standoff where an officer threatened to "shoot the lock off" their rehearsal space with his 38 Special revolver.Growing up in Jacksonville, Florida—what Barnes calls "the Liverpool of the South"—shaped the band's musical foundation as teenagers playing sailors' clubs alongside future members of Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Allman Brothers. This naval town connection forged their musical DNA and taught them the fundamentals of songwriting by covering popular hits.Barnes shares a surprising revelation about 38 Special's true influences. Despite being categorized as Southern rock, the band drew heavy inspiration from British Invasion artists like The Beatles and Jeff Beck. After their first three albums "went straight over the cliff," they discovered their winning formula: stripping songs down to what Barnes calls "muscle and melody"—powerful guitar work paired with strong melodies and relatable stories drawn from real-life experiences.Don also shares other passions with Lindsay and Bruce that include keeping sets of golf clubs on the tour bus. And speaking of that bus, it rolls into Dublin as 38 Special and Kansas headline another rockin' Independence Day celebration at Coffman Stadium!

For 15 years, I gave myself every excuse not to run.Wrong shoes.Wrong gear.Too tired.Too cold.My feet hurt. You name it - I said it. And I believed it.Until one morning in Crete. I'm at this beautiful outdoor gym. No water. No socks. No Netflix. A total act of God that my AirPods even connected.I hit play and on comes Lynyrd Skynyrd. “Gimme Three Steps.”I start walking. Then jogging. Then running. And I couldn't stop. I didn't stop. The cadence. The breathing. The eye of the tiger look in my eye.WOW. I felt like myself again. That strong, focused, determined version of me I didn't even realize had gone missing. And once I found her - oh, she was BACK.And it felt so. damn. good. This episode is about that moment. The one where you remember who you are. The one where something clicks and suddenly, all the excuses lose their power.Because she's not gone, she's simply waiting. Waiting for you to reclaim that part of you.And this kind of reconnection is available to anyone.Including you.If there's a version of you that's been lost…If there's a dream or habit or instinct you've been putting off…It's time to start paying attention. The signs are there. It's up to you what you do with them.
