This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, presented by The Prince Charles Cinema, our hosts Jonathan Foster and Fil Freitas run to the finish line with our final Vietnam film in our WAR, WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR?... HOLLYWOOD MOVIES arc! What better way to finish off the Vietnam War, than with one of the "best" films about the war, and just in general, of all time? Of course, we're talking about the 1994 Robert Zemeckis classic FORREST GUMP, starring Tom Hanks. You know the story, we see Tom Hanks, in a much different role than when he last appeared in our War arc with Saving Private Ryan, as the magical dimwit who floats through life with ease and somehow has a part in almost every major American event from the 1950s – 1980s. Smack dab in the middle, we see Forrest go off to Vietnam, for truly one of the more realistic takes on the war. With one of the greatest soundtracks ever assembled, full of kick ass bands like CCR, Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, The Mamas and the Papas, Simon and Garfunkel, Buffalo Springfield, The Byrds and Lynyrd Skynyrd, plus an Academy Award-winning performance from its lead, FORREST GUMP is arguably one of the greatest movies of all-time. But is it also one of the worst? Tune in, as we have a look at this iconic slice of American pie... If you enjoy the podcast, leave a Rating and Review! It really helps us out! What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 19, 2022 40:14

We've covered a number of underrated bands and albums, but perhaps the most underrated band of the 80's is 38 Special.  Formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1974 by Donnie Van Zandt and Don Barnes, 38 Special had a string of hits in the late 70's through the 80's including "Hold On Loosely,"  "Rockin' Into the Night," and "If I'd Been the One."  Special Forces is their fifth and most successful studio album, hitting number 10 on the Billboard 200.In addition to Van Zandt and Barnes, 38 Special's lineup for this album included Jeff Carlisi on guitar, Larry Junstrom on bass, Steve Brookins on drums, and Jack Grondin on drums.  A number of songs on this album were co-written by Jim Peterik, singer-songwriter and founder of the group Survivor.  Given the connection to Lynyrd Skynyrd (Donnie was the brother of original Skynyrd lead singer, Ronnie Van Zandt, and Junstrom was one of the founding members of Lynyrd Skynyrd), it is not surprising that their sound has its roots in Southern Rock.  However, 38 Special tended towards a more mainstream hard rock sound. The name of the group comes from an incident where the police were called on the band during a late night practice session.  The door was padlocked, and the police broke the lock by shooting it out ... with a 38 Special. Caught Up In YouThis is the first single and the big hit from the album, reaching number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 1 on the Mainstream Rock charts.  Don Barnes sings lead on this track.  The lyrics are self-explanatory, extolling a girl with whom the singer is completely entranced. You Keep Runnin' AwayBarnes has the lead duties from this song again.  The lyrics describe a girl who has been burned in past relationships and has decided never to trust another man.  The singer encourages her to not give up, that "someday, someway, somewhere love is gonna find you."Back Door Stranger A deeper cut from the album, the lyrics describe a serial rapist sneaking around, and what will happen to him if the singer catches up with him.  "Take my chances, rather go to jail than see the eyes of a coward runnin' loose and well."  The guitar has a great wah-wah sound, and Donnie Van Zandt takes his turn on lead vocals for this track.Chain Lightnin' The thunder sound is striking as both the intro and the outro for this iconic song.  There's a little bit of a Pink Floyd echo to add to the mystery.  "And it's hotter than hell in the heavens tonight."  "And it's so tough when the satisfaction is greater than the risk."ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Ain't Got No Home by Clarence “Frogman” Henry (from the motion picture “Diner”)This novelty song was featured in the comedy-drama starring Steve Guttenberg and Kevin Bacon. STAFF PICKS:Big Bad Bill (Is Sweet William Now) by Van Halen Bruce begins the staff picks with a deeper cut off the Diver Down album.  This cover was originally recorded in 1924, and came to the band's attention when David Lee Roth recorded it off a late night AM radio station.  Jan Van Halen, Eddie and Alex's father, is featured in this song playing clarinet.Did It in a Minute by Hall & Oates  Brian features a hit off the "Private Eyes" album from duo Darryl Hall and John Oates.  It was the third single from the album.  The upbeat song is about finding love almost instantaneously.  Hall wrote this with his girlfriend Sara Allen and her sister Janna, who came up with the chorus.Find Another Fool  by QuarterflashWayne gets a second chance to feature Portland's own Quarterflash.  This rocking minor-key song peaked at number 16 on the charts, and is a break-up song after the girl has had it with her ex-boyfriend's cheating ways.  The name comes from an Australian slang phrase, "a quarter flash, three parts foolish."  Quarterflash is the husband and wife team of Rindy and Marv RossMore Than This by Roxy MusicRob's staff pick is the first single off Roxy Music's last album, "Avalon."  Bryan Ferry began writing the songs for Avalon while on the west coast of Ireland, and the music reflects the melancholy feel of the location.  The song has an unusually long synth-driven outro. COMEDY TRACK:Piss On the Wall by the J. Geils BandSometimes you just must be going.  However, we do recommend that you find a toilet first!

In the first part of our chat with S. E. Feinberg about his book “Southern Man: Music and Mayhem in the American South,” which he co-authored with Alan Walden, we focused on the legendary work Walden did with R&B artists such as Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, and Percy Sledge.. It wasn't always peaches and cream: the music business is tough. But after following his passion for R&B and building the careers of many of the legends in the genre, Alan Walden needed a break. In Act Two, author S.E. Feinberg tells us how Alan was renewed by the music of The Allman Brothers Band. Listening to hundreds of bands, he discovered Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Outlaws, amongst others and helped define the sound of what would become known as “Southern Rock.”

Like a sculptor gazing upon a new stone, I see the future me. The thoughts I am thinking are the tools I will use, To free my true identity. Physical therapy is the best example I can give of the energy from now through the full moon. Have you ever done physical therapy after an accident or operation? Let's say with the Mars/Uranus last weekend, you got a physical "message" from the cosmos through your physical body. It might hurt, be sore, tight, or painful. The therapy is to do your exercises, stretch those muscles, and go through the pain to regain, strengthen, and get back in shape. This Mars (muscles) square Saturn (constriction) needs will force to push through. You may have this same thing happening on the emotional, mental, or spiritual levels. The old you got blasted, or you got "upgraded" to a new, unfamiliar reality (suddenly, as Uranus is involved). You may feel traumatized and victimized if you were not the originator of the change, feel the need for it, or want it. One way or the other, as the mantra says, it will be good to apply your willpower to discipline your mind during these next couple of weeks. Lastly, I suggest talking to your body and yourself. I know it's a little weird, but it works! And speak to it, of course, and listen to the answers! Your body and feelings can teach your mind a few things that will help you upgrade your life experience. Check it out! This week I offer one of my fav songs (especially the guitar solo at the end)! Simple Man - Lynyrd Skynyrd and a Biblical Word Study

I've been thinking about the lyrics to the song 'Simple Man,' and I have questions. Like, why didn't anyone give Lynyrd Skynyrd more to go on than this when he was young? And why was being a simple man the thing to shoot for? And where was his father? To be sure, we don't necessarily mean the same thing by "simple man" that the Bible does. But maybe that's the point. Do a word search of "simple" in the ESV at BibleGateway.com and see what you get. "Surely vexation kills the fool, and jealousy slays the simple." Job 5:2 "The Lord preserves the simple; when I was brought low, he saved me." Psalm 116:6 "The prudent sees danger and hides himself, but the simple go on and suffer for it." Proverbs 22:3, 27:12 This is to say, we clearly need more to go on, particularly if we want saved instead of suffering and being slain. And we should! But this also reminds me of what we think of as being the opposite of "simple." And I think the answer here is pretty obviously "complicated." Like the Relationship Status option on Facebook, "It's complicated" means we do not have a quick and tidy answer to the question. And this reminds of why I make a living doing what I do as a Systems Integrator. The word "systems" is simple enough. But just try explaining what all goes into making a system, and you'll appreciate that both knowledge and understanding are needed to do more help than harm. By the way, how do we know we're doing well? Whether we're talking about an individual person, household, church, corporation, or nation - what is the rubric? I may be simple in every sense, Biblical included, to only consider the material factors. But sooner or later the spiritual becomes more readily apparent in its physical ramifications. In other news, I have a tendency to use big and unfamiliar words. Whether in conversation or my writing, I at least really don't think I'm trying to dunk or flex on anyone. But the flip-side is that I often appreciate when I read or hear unfamiliar words and phrases I've never encountered before, so long as I have the time and ability to look them up or ask what they men, because that's where and how learning happens. On a related note, I think it is possible to be too nice. And how we should know the difference between being nice in a truly nice way and being "too nice" is in whether we are loving God and others well thereby. For instance, would we classify the 19 verses that come up when we search the ESV for "simple" as being "nice" or would we instead say that these are given to us for our holistic benefit? What I don't mean is that we should be mean. But what I am trying to convey is that loving God and one another well requires at a minimum that we not give our young boys advice like Lynyrd Skynyrd's mother gave him when he was young - to be simple. So also where others besides are asking for and getting input from us. If it wouldn't be good counsel to our young sons, it's not serving anyone else well either. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/support
