Some podcast episodes have been years in the making. This one has been more like a lifetime. This week on The Collector Car Podcast, I finally sit down with my Uncle Jack to talk about the cars, stories and people that have been part of his life for more than 60 years. At the center of the story is his Anniversary Gold 1963 Chevrolet Impala, a car he has owned since 1966. We also get into his lifelong love affair with Corvettes, including his 1967 Corvette, which has been part of the family since 1974. But then the conversation takes a turn I don't think many people will see coming. Long before Lynyrd Skynyrd became one of the most famous rock bands in the world, some of the future band members were neighborhood kids in Jacksonville, Florida, learning to play music in a garage. And Uncle Jack was there. He shares his memories of those early days—including the future rock stars borrowing his Kingsmen album as they were figuring out how to make music of their own. It's an episode about cars, family, music and the strange way our personal histories sometimes intersect with much bigger stories. Most of all, it's a chance for me to finally capture some of Uncle Jack's stories while I can—and share them with you. 1990. The Misty Moon Cabaret in Halifax, MuchMusic cameras rolling, and Gord doesn't dress it up. It's a rock song. Two and a half minutes, and then gone.'Just As Well' is track five on "Saskadelphia" (May 21, 2021), the six-song surprise that landed on the May long weekend. It was cut in New Orleans during the "Road Apples" sessions, with Don Smith producing and Bruce Barris engineering, and then it sat in the vault for more than thirty years. setlist.fm has ten documented live plays, every one of them in 1990, and nothing after. The live poll in the Facebook group came back 46 percent love it and 44 percent like it, plus 3 percent asking what in the hell 'Just As Well' even is. jD's gut says that 3 percent might be a single vote.The panel isn't buying the ten. Patrick from Newmarket has the 1990 tour itinerary out of the "This Is Our Life" book in his head, and Glenn from Melbourne can't see a song they were workshopping on stage stopping at ten nights. Then comes the harder question: where did this one ever belong? jD hears it as a Baby Blue EP song that missed its bus. Glenn has a timeline that says otherwise, and a theory about whose pen the opening lines came off. Ian from Maple Ridge turns up halfway through, blames the West Coast clock, and still lands the comparison nobody else had.WHAT ELSE IS IN HERE• The icebreaker. One song each they wish they'd heard live. Patrick's answer comes with a pair of near misses that still sting, and Glenn's pick has his own surname in it.• The Misty Moon version, spun in full. Glenn calls it the definitive take, and the line he points to is the angriest one in the song.• "Are you ready, Bruce?" Who Bruce is, and what Ian hears in the way Gord asks.• Pig heaven, "Animal Farm," and a crossroads with a certain bluesman waiting at it. Glenn's reading of the lyric is the most ambitious thing anyone has said about a two-and-a-half-minute bar song, and jD needs a second to recover.• The boots. Patrick ties one line to what Gord did to a pair of boots at Molson Park a few months later.• The 1970 hit they used to drop into the middle of it live, and what Glenn thinks that says about how seriously they were taking it.• "If the Ramones did a Lynyrd Skynyrd song." Baton Rouge, like other cities, deals with what demographers call “Net migration loss.” Here, we use the term loosely. It’s not that the number of people leaving Baton Rouge is greater than the number of people moving here. What net migration loss means here is - there are more people leaving than staying. Why do people leave Baton Rouge? Typically, they’ll tell you, for opportunity. Not romantic opportunity or opportunity for spiritual growth, but career opportunity. The bigger a city, the greater the opportunity. Okay, so if you follow that logic, every time someone decides to leave Baton Rouge they make the city smaller. So, the best thing a person who wants more opportunity should do is, stay. Right? Most people don’t buy this argument. But both of my lunch guests today, do. Brett Roblez likes making movies. Typically, if you want a career in the film business, you have to move someplace where they make movies. Brett moved to Atlanta, a film production hub. But after a couple of years in the film business there he moved back home to Baton Rouge, because, he said, he missed crawfish. In 2022 Brett founded a local film production company Dinosaur Rumblings. In the beginning it was just him. Today, Dinosaur Rumblings has 10 full-time employees, and they make a full slate of feature films, commercials, and filmed social media content. All of it, Brett says, is the same quality as anything that comes out of Hollywood. Alysia Guin is bullish on making Baton Rouge an entertainment mecca too. Alysia is Director of Marketing & Partnerships at Raising Cane’s River Center. Raising Cane’s River Center hosts up to 375 events each year at its arena, theater, and convention center. There are Broadway productions, sporting events, community programming, and concerts that include an amazing list of superstars like Elton John, The Rolling Stones, and Lynyrd Skynyrd. The River Center has been hosting events for almost 50 years. Alysia has been Director of Marketing since the beginning of 2025. If you spend any time on social media, especially TikTok, you’ll see any number of well-meaning people encouraging you with variations on the theme, “You Go Girl”. One of these encouragements that you might roll your eyes at as you scroll by is, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” That one is apparently not a Hallmark card, it’s a quote from Mahatma Gandhi. He was suggesting we should each individually take personal responsibility and lead by example to make the world a better place. If you ever think one person can’t make a difference, sure, you can point to Gandhi as an example of what one person can do, but locally, we could also point to Brett Roblez and Alysia Guin. Nur ein Jahr später kamen er, Gitarrist Steve Gaines und dessen Schwester Cassie Gaines bei einem Flugzeugabsturz ums Leben. Growing up in the small town of Union, West Virginia, Caden was sur-rounded by old timers. While no one in his family played an instrument, he got bored and decided he would learn to play the banjo. He taught himself to play bluegrass banjo at a young age. That lead to Caden pick-ing up a guitar as well. Eventually he would grow to love southern rock, blues, country, and folk music with big inspirations such as Lynyrd Skynyrd, Doc Watson, Jim Croce, The Allman Brothers and many more! These inspirations molded his voice to what it is today! His knowledge and playability of music is a wide variety of all genres! Caden has music across all platforms telling tales of Appalachia.

Alan Peter Kuperschmidt - better known as Al Kooper - is an American songwriter, record producer, and musician who throughout much of the 1960s and 1970s was a prolific studio musician, playing organ on Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone", French horn and piano on the Rolling Stones song "You Can't Always Get What You Want", and lead guitar on Rita Coolidge's "The Lady's Not for Sale". He also formed and named Blood, Sweat & Tears, produced a number of one-off collaboration albums such as the Super Session album with guitarists Mike Bloomfield and Stephen Stills, and was a successful manager and producer, recording Lynyrd Skynyrd's first three albums.
