In this special episode, we take a nostalgic look back at the early recordings that sparked our popular movie review format. The fab four's fourth fab album, Beatles for Sale, isn't just absolutely freaking underrated. It offers perhaps the last of their comparatively-less-ubiquitous knockout tunes. Side 2 illustrates this point perfectly, where just about Every Little Thing is magical*. (*May not include cover songs!) And yet, the UBP's very own Tony “Dave Dexter Junior, Junior” Mendoza wants to make this album even better. How will he do this you may ask? That's why you literally have to listen! (No, really this time we're not f**king around.) Spoiler alert: just when the “lawyers” said Rush and The Beatles was too legally sick of a collab, The Spirit of Hard Rock Radio on WFUK - Your Home for Appleton Foxes Baseball - proves that in Tony's world, the timeless wavelengths remain, well, timeless. And also, wavelengths. You can't spoil a UBP “Beatles For Sale” party, because a UBP “Beatles For Sale” party don't spoil! Oy, unless it's too hot at this meshugana picnic! Which one of you shcmucks brought egg salad, it's a thousand degrees out here!? And also:

Dennis is joined by one of his pals from the Xana-crew, Bill Morgan, who is the co-author of a book called Collector's Guide To TV Toys & Memorabilia 1960s & 1970s. The book features every TV tie-in toy you remember from your childhood and a bunch that you never even knew existed. Bill talks about first getting obsessed with collecting when his ex was given a set of Three's Company trading cards as a kind of gift. Seeing the cards were numbered Bill wanted to collect them all and a new passion was born. Bill talks about shooting the photos for the book himself while his partner did most of the writing. He also discusses some of the TV shows featured in the book like The Brady Bunch, The Bionic Woman, Family Affair, Gilligan's Island, Charlie's Angels, Welcome Back Kotter and The Partridge Family and he explains why The Partridge Family bus toy was his 'white whale' as a collector. Other topics include: the year he ruined Christmas by being too honest, his passion for collecting Disney records on vinyl, growing up Mormon and coming out at 15, how collecting worked before E-bay, making friends with people from the shows he loved and the Farrah phenomenon of 1977.  www.TVtoys.com

Thank you for being part of the conversation. This is Play It Forward. Real people. Real stories. The struggle to Play It Forward Episode 608 With Kliph Nesteroff The Author Of Outrageous. From the preeminent historian of modern comedy comes an expansive history of showbiz and the culture wars. There is a common belief that we live in unprecedented times, that people are too sensitive today, that nobody objected to the actions of actors, comedians, and filmmakers in the past. Modern pundits would have us believe that Americans of a previous generation had tougher skin and seldom complained. But does this argument hold up to scrutiny? In Outrageous, celebrated cultural historian Kliph Nesteroff demonstrates that Americans have been objecting to entertainment for nearly two hundred years, sometimes rationally, often irrationally. Likewise, powerful political interests have sought to circumvent the arts using censorship, legal harassment, and outright propaganda. From Mae West through Johnny Carson, Amos 'n' Andy through Beavis and Butt-Head, as well as Bing Crosby, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Chubby Checker, MTV, Welcome Back Kotter, Three's Company, Monty Python's Life of Brian, The Adventures of Mighty Mouse and The Simpsons. Outrageous chronicles the controversies of American show business and the ongoing attempts to change what we watch, read, and hear.

From the people that brought you Hellraiser and Night Patrol (you read that right) comes 1989's HELLGATE.  This movie stars Ron Palillo (Welcome Back Kotter) and a group of actors who weren't in Welcome Back Kotter as students (?) who's weekend getaway turns to terror when they're lured to a ghost town (?) called Hellgate.   This movie has everything.  Is it a horror movie?  Is it a sci-fi movie?  Is it a comedy?  Is it a producer's attempt to showcase their enviable car collection?  The answer to all these questions is, "yes".   We talk about the sadly overlooked traveling model industry, the lasting appeal of 1950's diners, and the challenges with using metal plates instead of band aids.  We also talk about boners more in this episode then ever before so you have that to look forward to.  We also debate whether Josie (the lead ghost in the movie) is trying to seduce Matt (Ron Palillo) for love or just so that he'll take over her daily chores.   This movie ranks high on our "fun meter".  If you liked ZOMBIE NIGHTMARE, then you owe yourself to take HELLGATE out for a spin.  Just watch out for brick walls.

Then, the guys tackle their first animated show for the podcast, 1981's “Laverne and Shirley” (aka known as Laverne and Shirley in the Army to not confuse it with the live action counterpart). While this Laverne and Shirley doesn't have Lenny or Squiggy or Carmine Ragusa, it does have a pig voiced by Horshack from Welcome Back Kotter and giant space birds. Jason thinks the show may have been borne out of the last actor's strike while Les thinks this is the horniest cartoon he's ever seen. Disco music had been a thing from the early 70s on, but not so much in the mainstream. Parts of the African-American, Latino and gay communities had been cherishing the music as an event - going out to dance in discotheques was the thing. There's are books that go through the history of disco music and what put that music underground. Some of the music became top forty success stories, but disco really exploded in 1977 thanks to a movie featuring a TV actor and songs by a group past their glory days. Welcome to episode 108 of See Hear Podcast. Robert Stigwood bought the film rights to a fictitious article by Nik Cohn called “Tribal Rites of the New Saturday Night”. He invested $3.5M into making the film, and made sure his act The Bee Gees were going to be featured on the soundtrack. John Travolta in between Welcome Back Kotter seasons starred as a young working class man from Brooklyn who hates his job and home life, and only finds solace when dancing at the 2001 Odyssey Discotheque. The film is a great character study of what drives people and their self esteem. Kerry, Tim and I welcome first-time guest to the show, Dan Fisher. Dan has started a great new podcast called Let's Talk Ten where he and guests run off lists about all manner things devoted to pop culture. I invited him to our virtual table and Saturday Night Fever was his pick.....it triggered a great discussion, although as Frank Santopadre would say, we barely scratched the surface. The film has so many thematic elements to riff on. We cover some of those, but we also look at disco as a phenomenon (and how it influenced Chasidic music and Joe Raposo), 70s Hollywood movie anti-heroes, the violent backlash to disco music, and aspiring for something better in life. A warning: I sing – twice. We're grateful that Dan came to us with this pick and was such an active participant in the episode. It won't be his last time with us. You should search for him on Facebook to follow his “Rank 'Em” posts (explained at the start of the episode), and you can find Let's Talk Ten at https://letstalktenpodcast.buzzsprout.com/ or whatever app you use to listen to podcasts. Screw It, We're Just Gonna Talk About Spider-Man

We begin our coverage of the Ed Brubaker / Darwyn Cooke era of Catwoman comics. We start with Trail of the Catwoman - written by Brubaker, drawn by Cooke.. Originally published in 2001 as a backup feature in Detective Comics, it's now collected with the solo Catwoman series that Brubaker and Cooke worked on. The plot of the story is that hard boiled private eye Slam Bradley (himself an actual golden age character from the pre-Batman Detective Comics) as he tries to determine if Selina Kyle is really dead (she is not). But the effect of the story is to re-purpose Catwoman as a crime noir action star. It's a beautiful, gripping, fun story - a must read! "Welcome Back, Kotter" was a classic sitcom that first premiered on September 9, 1975, on the ABC network. The show was created by Gabe Kaplan, who also played the character, Gabe Kotter, a former Sweathog who returns to his alma mater to teach a group of underprivileged students. Kaplan drew on his own experiences growing up in Brooklyn to create the show's setting and characters. The Sweathogs, a group of lovable but misguided students were based on his own high school friends. A young John Travolta was cast as the charismatic lead Sweathog, Vinnie Barbarino. The show even took on a second life in the 90's when reruns were aired as part of "Kotter Fridays" on Nick at Nite. "Welcome Back, Kotter" was an instant hit with audiences, drawing in large viewership numbers and earning critical acclaim for its humor and relatable characters. It was a groundbreaking sitcom that tackled serious issues such as poverty, race, and social class while still delivering laugh-out-loud moments. Its enduring popularity has made it a classic of 1970s television, and its influence can still be felt in many modern sitcoms today.
