From busting drug lords to leading the Pentagon task force charged with bringing the 9/11 terrorists to justice, Mark Fallon has spent his career on the front lines of U.S. national security. My first guest is one of the most fascinating people I've interviewed. Former NCIS Special Agent in Charge Mark Fallon is a national security consultant, scholar, and expert in counterintelligence and counterterrorism who's been involved in some of the most significant terrorism investigations in U.S. history. Mark served more than thirty years in government—twenty-seven with the NCIS and two as a Senior Executive within the Department of Homeland Security. He received numerous awards and medals for his service, including the Department of Defense Counterintelligence Award for Outstanding Achievement and the U.S. Secret Service Director Honors Award. As an NCIS Special Agent, Mark operated undercover in some of the most dangerous places in the world—from infiltrating drug rings in Thailand to capturing poachers in Kenya. He takes us inside his undercover operations and describes his strategy for a successful mission. We talked about the interview and interrogation techniques that actually work (hint: they involve rapport and, occasionally, French fries), and the moment his wife discovered details of an undercover operation. In the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Mark was appointed Deputy Commander and Special Agent in Charge of the Pentagon task force, responsible for investigating terrorists for possible trials before military commissions. His critically acclaimed book, Unjustifiable Means: The Inside Story of How the CIA, Pentagon, and US Government Conspired to Torture (Regan Arts, 2017) offers a gripping account of the leadership challenges he faced while trying to bring terrorists to justice without compromising his oath to protect and defend the Constitution. Mark opens up about what it takes to lead under pressure, the duty to disobey an unlawful order, and why interrogators make the best first dates He shares leadership lessons that extend far beyond national security—tools for navigating crisis, conflict, and high-stakes decisions in any field. Today, as founder of ClubFed, Mark serves as an international security consultant and continues his mission for improving the practice of interviews and interrogations. Pulitzer Prize–winning investigative reporter Bill Dedman calls Mark Fallon "the Serpico in the war on terror," and high-ranking officials call him an American hero who's made the world safer. Listen to the podcast—and you'll understand why. A Step Closer to Personalized Medicine

Imagine your doctor could precisely predict your personal risk of disease, diagnose the cause of illness with pinpoint accuracy when it did occur, and develop an effective treatment plan with low side effects the first time, rather than through trial and error. That's the promise of personalized medicine. And it would be a revolution in healthcare. At the heart of this vision is the notion that our genetic differences have a big impact on how each of us responds to disease and treatment. To realize a future of personalized medicine then, we need to understand and investigate just how genetic variations, including mutations, contribute to illness and respond to doctors' attempts to address it. But how can scientists do that efficiently with a human genome that spans about three billion base pairs of DNA across tens of thousands of genes? That's where the work of PhD student Dawn Chen comes in. A student in Harvard's Department of Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology and the Systems, Synthetic, and Quantitative Biology Program, Chen was named a recipient of the 2025 Harold M. Weintraub Graduate Student Award for Outstanding Achievement and Exceptional Research in the Biological Sciences, presented by Seattle's Fred Hutch Cancer Center. With her colleagues in the lab of Harvard professor Fei Chen, Dawn Chen is developing an innovative gene-editing tool known as helicase-assisted continuous editing, or HACE. A breakthrough in genetic engineering, supported in part by funds from the National Institutes of Health, HACE makes edits to specific genes, allowing researchers to investigate how genetic variations contribute to disease. The technique could lead to the identification of specific mutations that influence the effectiveness of drugs and therapies for illnesses like cancer.

This week Ivy Slater, host of Her Success Story, chats with her guest, Susan Ann Davis. The two talk about resilience in the face of challenges, the importance of mentorship and community among women in business, and the strategic choices involved in scaling a company globally. In this episode, we discuss: How Susan's career path veered from law school ambitions to falling in love with Washington D.C.'s vibrant environment, leading her to strategic communications instead. Why mentorship is vital, rooted in Susan's experiences and efforts to create supportive networks like the International Women's Forum. Being unafraid to take risks and the power of listening more than talking to drive success. Handling difficult situations and failures. Overcoming challenges as a female business owner     Susan Ann Davis-President of SDI is a pioneering woman business owner who opened her agency when relatively few women were experiencing success in the business world, and fewer still owned their own business. Over decades, she has grown SDI into a global public affairs and strategic communications powerhouse, receiving accolades and recognition from industry peers and earning the respect of business and government leaders around the world. Internationally known for her expertise in strategic positioning, reputation management, government relations, and crisis communications, Davis has provided counsel to government and industry leaders on six continents and was a strategic U.S. advisor to the Irish Bishops Conference for the Vatican World Meeting of Families and the papal visit to Ireland. She is a co-founder of IPREX, a global agency network covering 100 markets worldwide. Davis has worked with more than a dozen countries on issues ranging from economic crisis to nation building and trade expansion. And for decades she has been a strategic communications and public affairs consultant on U.S. military and veterans' issues for the defense industry and to multiple Secretaries of Defense, DOD agencies, service branches and support organizations. Over her professional career, Davis has played a key strategic communications and government relations role in high-profile crises ranging from reputation management, product liability litigation to airline crashes, environmental threats, and foreign government economic crises, affording her deep insight into senior management policy, planning, execution, and decision making. And as a leader and business visionary, she is expert at developing engagement, media, and business opportunities for executives throughout the globe. She led the Global Irish Forum recommendation for Ireland to develop as a global hub for smart aging technologies, products, design and services, was a founder of Smart Ageing Living Labs of Ireland, and a former producer of a White House Conference on Aging and Silicon Valley Venture Boomer Summits. A lifelong advocate for social entrepreneurship, democracy building and leadership development for women, she is board chair emeritus of Vital Voices Global Partnership, the preeminent NGO that trains and empowers emerging women leaders in 115 countries. She was a founder and the first international president of the International Women's Forum, the global leadership organization now representing more than 7000 women of achievement. She serves on numerous philanthropy boards including the American Ireland Fund and the Razia's Ray of Hope Foundation, for which she is board chair. The Foundation continues to educate over 700 girls in rural Afghanistan. Who is absolutely loving HULU's Only Murders in the Building? I am! On this episode of Dear Multi-Hyphenate, we have the loveable Michael Cyril Creighton who plays Howard Morris on Only Murders in the Building on HULU. We discuss how Michael was compelled to create his own work and how it created a domino effect of constant work in the industry. It's all about writing what you know, and Michael certainly proves that theory. How did he end up from working the box office to working on some of the most successful tv shows and films of all time? TELEVISION: Hulu's “Only Murders in the Building” (Series Regular), Amazon's “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (recurring) Showtime's “Dexter: New Blood” (recurring), Netflix's “Dash & Lily” (recurring), HBO's "High Maintenance" (recurring), EPIX's "Graves" (recurring), Amazon's “A League of Their Own”, Netflix's “AJ & the Queen”, FOX's "Bob's Burgers," Showtime's "Billions," "Horace and Pete," FOX's “Bob's Burgers,” CBS's "The Good Fight," Adult Swim's "Neon Joe Werewolf Hunter," Showtime's "Nurse Jackie," Netflix's “Orange is the New Black,” NBC's “30 Rock,” FX's “Louie,” CBS's "2 Broke Girls," CBS's “Person of Interest," FX's "Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll," LOGO's “Jeffery & Cole Casserole.” FILM: Cord Jeffereson's “American Fiction,” Steven Spielberg's "The Post," "Game Night," "Spotlight," "Can You Ever Forgive Me?," “Seneca,” "Home Again," "Coin Heist," "Sleeping With Other People," "Fits and Starts," "3rd Street Blackout," “Towheads,” “How To Follow Strangers,” “Paper Spiders” and “The Outside Story.” THEATRE: Jordan Harrison's The Amateurs (Vineyard Theatre), Sarah Ruhl's Stage Kiss (Playwrights Horizons), Blood Play, Buddy Cop 2, You're Welcome and Cape Disappointment (all with The Debate Society), Joshua Conkel's MilkMilkLemonade and more. The series ran from 2009-2012 and consisted of 31 episodes, dozens of cupcakes and a fair amount of funny-sad humor. It was written about in several publications and on several websites, including The New York Times, The Huffington Post, Time Out New York, Le Monde Paris, The New York Daily News, The AV Club and Michael was named a “Digital All Star” by Backstage. Henry Halem: Inspiring and Educating a Generation of Glass Artists

More than 50 years after Henry Halem designed a series of cast glass sculptures inspired by the Kent State shootings, he decided to bring the imagery back to life. At a time when the Vietnam War empowered social activism and fueled political debates, the May 4, 1970, Kent State shootings seemed to take center stage, influencing several genres of music and art. Among these works was Halem's glass sculptures. “The imagery was based on the shootings at Kent State and the blindness that the political system had in relationship to what young people were about in protesting the war. They were blind to the generation that was protesting. And, so, I made these blinded images that had their eyes covered,” Halem said. Today, Halem is at it again, creating another series of blinded sculptures, but this time for a different reason. He has created seven blinded sculptures in the series so far, three of which are on view at Habatat Galleries Detroit. “I revived the imagery,” Halem said, “the blind imagery, to reflect the narrative of our blindness to the destruction of the earth, and who we are, what we are.” As a teenager growing up in the Bronx, Halem learned to throw pots at the Greenwich House Pottery in New York's Greenwich Village. Now, at 86 years old, he's still making art. Holding a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA from George Washington University, Halem did post graduate work at the University of Wisconsin as an assistant to Harvey Littleton in 1968. In 1969, Halem founded the glass program at Kent State University (KSU) and taught there for 29 years, subsequently teaching at Pilchuck Glass School and Penland School of Craft. He was one of the founders of the Glass Art Society and served as its first president.  Halem's body of work ranges from his early blown vessels to Vitrolite glass collages, glass castings to enameled and painted glass wall panels. His narrative boxes have been described as “… ordinary glass boxes filled with enigmatic objects and reverse glass drawings and paintings.” He is known for powerful responses to political events – the 1970 Kent State shootings, 9/11, and a memorial for American soldiers who died in Iraq.  Exhibiting extensively throughout the U.S., Europe and Japan, Halem's work is in the permanent collections of The Corning Museum of Glass, Cleveland Museum of Art, Smithsonian Institution, Toledo Museum, Detroit Institute of Art, High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Hokkaido & Niijima Museums in Japan, and the Decorative Arts Museum, Prague. He has been honored by the Glass Art Society and the American Crafts Council; he received the Governor's Award from the State of Ohio as well as the President's Medal for Outstanding Achievement from KSU. He penned Glass Notes: A Reference for the Glass Artist and is still an authority on all things glass. Throughout the years, Halem has amassed a diverse set of techniques that are put into action with a little bit of know-how. No matter what he does regarding art, it gets “distilled” through what he has learned from one of his favorite books, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. “The moral of that book was, in order to fix something, you have to know how it works,” Halem said. “So, my search is into finding out how things work. That, and my belief that the artist's job is to question authority in itself, is what drives me.”

SHINING WITH ADHD  EPISODE #153: Understanding ADHD in Girls with Psychologist Stephen Hinshaw 4/24/2024 SUMMARY When people think of ADHD, they often picture the wiggly 6-year-old who struggles to keep his hands to himself and loves making his classmates laugh. We don't often picture the little girl with a busy brain and loves to talk. For years, girls were overlooked in the research for ADHD. This resulted in a misunderstanding of their need for support as well as options for evidence-based treatment until adolescence. Getting these amazing girls the right treatment as early as possible is paramount for their success. In this episode, we are interviewing Stephen Hinshaw, an expert on ADHD in girls. He shares a summary of a twenty-five-year research study and how to support these amazing girls best!  MEET STEPHEN HINSHAW Stephen Hinshaw is a Distinguished Professor of Psychology at UC Berkeley and Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at UC San Francisco. Greig Fraser, ACS, ASC, (born 3 October 1975) is an Australian cinematographer who studied at the RMIT University. His most well-known work includes the films Zero Dark Thirty (2012), Lion (2016), Rogue One (2016), Vice (2018), Dune (2021), The Batman (2022) and The Creator (2023). For his short film Cracker Bag he was nominated for Best Cinematography at the 2003 AFI Awards. For his work on Lion, he won the American Society of Cinematographers Award for Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography in Theatrical Releases and AACTA Award for Best Cinematography and received Academy Award and BAFTA Award nominations. Fraser shot Rogue One on the Arri Alexa 65 large format digital camera and Panavision lenses from the 1970s, making it the first feature film shot entirely with the Alexa 65. Fraser said of working with the Alexa 65, "The images are sharper and have more resolution, and those things are an advantage, but for me it is about the depth of the image -- there is a three-dimensionality to it. Often the beauty came from the texture; we found that the camera excelled when we were filming something with texture; it really enhanced the quality of picture." Fraser returned to the Star Wars franchise with the 2019 television series The Mandalorian. In 2020, for his work on the series, Fraser won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Cinematography for a Single-Camera Series (Half-Hour). For his work on Dune he won his first Academy Award for Best Cinematography in 2022. Fraser said a feature of his work in that film was intentionally using simple compositions, "We tried to simplify the frames as much as we could. By doing that, we've been able to give the viewers that absorption of story and experience" and colour palette: "We tried quite hard to make sure that it all sat within a certain tone."
