The Maker's Share in Ancient Greek Art (27th September 2016) with Prof. Andrew Stewart
The art of Greel antiquity is vitally important in that it still determines our definition of what sculpture is. Our present-day techniques are derived from it, and it still serves as a point of references for the use we make of art and the value we ascribe to it. The content is contributed by eminent specialists in Greek sculpture. It serves to rekindle our admiration for these masterpieces. As we review the history of Greek Sculpture, new perspectives open before us.
This lecture will discuss Greek sculptures and some of the ways in which their ideal representations of the male body have shaped the twentieth century strong man and the bodybuilder, particularly in terms of their display of power and sexuality. The talk will include the culture of the circus strongman, bodybuilding shows, physique magazines and the post-war craze for Italian sword-and-sandal films starring bodybuilders as ancient heroes.
Examining a variety of artwork from the Ancient Greek Orientalizing Period and Archaic Period, episode 15 takes a brief look at the historical climate that gave rise to Greek sculpture. We explore Greece’s cultural contact with Egypt during the Saite Dynasty, with particular attention to the Greek colony of Naukratis. A variety of Egyptian and Near Eastern influences helped shape the developing Greek arts, which laid the foundation for the legacy of Western Civilization.
