Al, Zach, Christian, and John Luke are joined by Dr. Justin Jackson of Hillsdale College, teacher of the Genesis course they've been studying for weeks. The guys debate over who's the current “fat brother” now that Al has lost weight, and wild parenting stories of Robertson teens flipping trucks, stabbing couches, and launching fireworks inside the bath house have them questioning their parenting choices. Dr. Jackson helps the guys trace themes of poetry, politics, and thought-provoking theories throughout Genesis.  In this episode: Genesis 4, verses 6–7; Genesis 18, verses 10–15; Genesis 21, verses 1–7; Matthew 5, verses 23–24; 1 Peter 2, verse 9; Ephesians 6, verse 4 Today's conversation is an overview of The Genesis Story: Reading Biblical Narratives taught by Hillsdale Professor Justin Jackson. FINALLY A TEXTBOOK THAT SHARES THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE WONDERFUL OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION I've long said the worst thing to happen to the United States was Howard Zinn's patently Anti-American textbook. Now we've got a completely different sort of textbook called A History of the Western Tradition by highly regarded historians Allen Guelzo and James Hankins. Read this summary:THE GOLDEN THREAD contends that Western civilization has, in our lifetimes, been simultaneously challenged by secular totalitarianisms and yet remarkably successful in laying the foundations for material prosperity around the globe. These contradictions will present to the reader the most significant problems facing Western civilization today. Guelzo and Hankins, above all, wish for their readers to “understand just how fragile our tradition is and how many times in the three-thousand-year-long history of the West the golden thread that ties us to our past and enriches us beyond measure has come close to snapping.”Perfect timing for this sort of pro-Western Civilization revival that is desperately needed before people willingly march themselves towards totalitarianism. Allen Guelzo joins me at 2:30 to discuss it. Find out more about Golden Thread Academics here. Guelzo has written some really incredible books on Lincoln and the Civil War that you can find out more about here.

On September 10th Charlie Kirk was killed in broad daylight on a college campus in Utah by the alleged assassin Tyler Robinson. Another casualty of the woke war on the West. An insidious revolt that many Christians have a hard time wrapping their minds around, which is why this edition of Hank Unplugged is dedicated to summarizing the issue at hand in memorable fashion via the word W–O–K–E.   “W” representing the word Worldview. Students, particularly in the West, are being propagandized by a WOKE WORLDVIEW. Charlie Kirk was committed to dismantling the absurdities of this paradigm in polite and principled public discussion.   “O” will serve to remind us of the word “Oppression.” The woke West seems intractably bent on taking the Marxist oppressor/oppressed maxim to unthinkable extremes. Their objective is to liberate an entire generation from such perceived oppressions as cis-gender normativity, and from the oppression of what is perceived to be arbitrary moral law.   “K” — I use the letter “K” to emblazon upon our collective consciousness that Kids — your kids, my kids, are a primary target of leftist woke revolutionaries. Charlie Kirk recognized this reality and, as such, became the enticing target for an assassin's bullet.   “E” serves to remind you and me of Extremism. Extremism in Education, Environmentalism, and in Entertainment.   The murder of Charlie Kirk is emblematic of the woke worldview war being waged against you, your children, and against the very soul of Western Civilization. Charlie Kirk, may your memory be eternal.  For more information on the WOKE Worldview, please see “The War on Western Civilization: Everything You Need to Know about the Cult of Wokeism“. https://www.equip.org/product/special-issue-of-the-christian-research-journal-titled-the-war-on-western-civilization-everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-cult-of-wokeism/ Listen to Hank's podcast and follow Hank off the grid where he is joined by some of the brightest minds discussing topics you care about. Charlie Kirk's death ignited a fire within Western civilization, and it is sending a message to the Left: No more. It's been one week since Kirk was shot dead while debating on a college campus, and the Right is reacting more viscerally than we've seen from it in recent memory. Not only that, but we're seeing worldwide support for Kirk, mass demonstrations against illegal immigration in Europe, the fall of France's government, and a grassroots movement saying, “Enough is enough,” here in America. Victor Davis Hanson analyzes the events that pushed the West to its boiling point and where we go from here on today's episode of “Victor Davis Hanson: In His Own Words.” “What is this moment? We're seeing it in the United States with thousands of people are commemorating the death of Charlie Kirk. There's no tolerance for the usual left-wing, socialist craziness, the abhorrent violent smears of conservatives who've died. And you don't see major bureaucrats, or generals, or Hollywood figures—increasingly, they're not coming out and rejoicing because they feel that they're going to get a big pushback. “ We also are tired of what I call boutique anti-Americanism. We see Ilhan Omar suggesting that our elected government is worse than the dictatorship in Somalia; or we see AOC calling Donald Trump a fascist, as she has in the past; or we see Rashida Tlaib just demonizing and damning the United States, even though her parents fled the Middle East to come here. And we're tired of it. It doesn't mean we're gonna outlaw free speech or try to use the same tactics as the critics of America do. But what we're saying is, we're a unique place. We're better than the alternative. We don't have to be perfect to be good. So, you can say all you want, but we're gonna not just ignore you, we're gonna do our best to make sure your voices have no influence.”

At the turn of the 20th century, Western elites thought that they could create "heaven on Earth” by moving away from fossil fuels, allowing open borders, and embracing diversity, equity, and inclusion. Results? Skyrocketing fuel costs, which have in turn destroyed the “ viability of the middle classes that are now in revolt,” millions of unassimilated Islamic refugees, plummeting fertility rates, and the beginnings of tribalism, argues Victor Davis Hanson on today's edition of “Victor Davis Hanson: In His Own Words.”

He reveals the real-world consequences of this destructive trend and explains why embracing a new form of patriotism is the key to preserving our liberty. You'll hear about specific examples of this cultural self-destruction, from college campuses to Congress, and discover why reclaiming our identity is essential for America's survival. On this episode of Crazy Wisdom, host Stewart Alsop speaks with Michael Jagdeo, a headhunter and founder working with Exponent Labs and The Syndicate, about the cycles of money, power, and technology that shape our world. Their conversation touches on financial history through The Ascent of Money by Niall Ferguson and William Bagehot's The Money Market, the rise and fall of financial centers from London to New York and the new Texas Stock Exchange, the consolidation of industries and the theory of oligarchical collectivism, the role of AI as both tool and chaos agent, Bitcoin and “quantitative re-centralization,” the dynamics of exponential organizations, and the balance between collectivism and individualism. Jagdeo also shares recruiting philosophies rooted in stories like “stone soup,” frameworks like Yu-Kai Chou's Octalysis and the User Type Hexad, and book recommendations including Salim Ismail's Exponential Organizations and Arthur Koestler's The Act of Creation. Along the way they explore servant leadership, Price's Law, Linux and open source futures, religion as an operating system, and the cyclical nature of civilizations. You can learn more about Michael Jagdeo or reach out to him directly through Twitter or LinkedIn.Check out this GPT we trained on the conversationTimestamps00:05 Stewart Alsop introduces Michael Jagdeo, who shares his path from headhunting actuaries and IT talent into launching startups with Exponent Labs and The Syndicate.00:10 They connect recruiting to financial history, discussing actuaries, The Ascent of Money, and William Bagehot's The Money Market on the London money market and railways.00:15 The Rothschilds, institutional knowledge, and Corn Laws lead into questions about New York as a financial center and the quiet launch of the Texas Stock Exchange by Citadel and BlackRock.00:20 Capital power, George Soros vs. the Bank of England, chaos, paper clips, and Orwell's oligarchical collectivism frame industry consolidation, syndicates, and stone soup.00:25 They debate imperial conquest, bourgeoisie leisure, the decline of the middle class, AI as chaos agent, digital twins, Sarah Connor, Godzilla, and nuclear metaphors.00:30 Conversation turns to Bitcoin, “quantitative re-centralization,” Jack Bogle, index funds, Robinhood micro bailouts, and AI as both entropy and negative entropy.00:35 Jagdeo discusses Jim Keller, Tenstorrent, RISC-V, Nvidia CUDA, exponential organizations, Price's Law, bureaucracy, and servant leadership with the parable of stone soup.00:40 Recruiting as symbiosis, biophilia, trust, Judas, Wilhelm Reich, AI tools, Octalysis gamification, Jordan vs. triangle offense, and the role of laughter in persuasion emerge.00:45 They explore religion as operating systems, Greek gods, Comte's stages, Nietzsche, Jung, nostalgia, scientism, and Jordan Peterson's revival of tradition.00:50 The episode closes with Linux debates, Ubuntu, Framer laptops, PewDiePie, and Jagdeo's nod to Liminal Snake on epistemic centers and turning curses into blessings.Key InsightsOne of the central insights of the conversation is how financial history repeats through cycles of consolidation and power shifts. Michael Jagdeo draws on William Bagehot's The Money Market to explain how London became the hub of European finance, much like New York later did, and how the Texas Stock Exchange signals a possible southern resurgence of financial influence in America. The pattern of wealth moving with institutional shifts underscores how markets, capital, and politics remain intertwined.Jagdeo and Alsop emphasize that industries naturally oligarchize. Borrowing from Orwell's “oligarchical collectivism,” Jagdeo notes that whether in diamonds, food, or finance, consolidation emerges as economies of scale take over. This breeds syndicates and monopolies, often interpreted as conspiracies but really the predictable outcome of industrial maturation.Another powerful theme is the stone soup model of collaboration. Jagdeo applies this parable to recruiting, showing that no single individual can achieve large goals alone. By framing opportunities as shared ventures where each person adds their own ingredient, leaders can attract top talent while fostering genuine symbiosis.Technology, and particularly AI, is cast as both chaos agent and amplifier of human potential. The conversation likens AI to nuclear power—capable of great destruction or progress. From digital twins to Sarah Connor metaphors, they argue AI represents not just artificial intelligence but artificial knowledge and action, pushing humans to adapt quickly to its disruptive presence. The discussion of Bitcoin and digital currencies reframes decentralization as potentially another trap. Jagdeo provocatively calls Bitcoin “quantitative re-centralization,” suggesting that far from liberating individuals, digital currencies may accelerate neo-feudalism by creating new oligarchies and consolidating financial control in unexpected ways.Exponential organizations and the leverage of small teams emerge as another key point. Citing Price's Law, Jagdeo explains how fewer than a dozen highly capable individuals can now achieve billion-dollar valuations thanks to open source hardware, AI, and network effects. This trend redefines scale, making nimble collectives more powerful than bureaucratic giants. Finally, the episode highlights the cyclical nature of civilizations and belief systems. From Rome vs. Carthage to Greek gods shifting with societal needs, to Nietzsche's “God is dead” and Jung's view of recurring deaths of divinity, Jagdeo argues that religion, ideology, and operating systems reflect underlying incentives. Western nostalgia for past structures, whether political or religious, risks idolatry, while the real path forward may lie in new blends of individualism, collectivism, and adaptive tools like Linux and AI.

There is no better argument against socialism and Communism than to speak to someone who has grown up and lived through the oppression. Dr. Ileana Johnson Paugh has spent much of her life educating Americans about the true nature of collectivism. She describes living under Communism in Romania after the USSR imposed it on her people. There is a vivid story about how the dictatorship allowed the churches to remain, but as stooges of the Communist regime. On one occasion, an American charity donated Bibles to the church, when no one could actually have a Bible under the Communist regime. The dictatorship seized the Bibles and turned them into toilet paper. But the technology for making new paper was so poor that, thereafter, citizens kept receiving toilet paper through which the words of the Bible could be seen. I'm going to put that anecdote into our next book about freedom and love in Western Civilization versus freedom and love under dictatorships, kingdoms, and empires.   Dr. Paugh has authored many books whose titles invite them to be read. Here's a sample: Echoes of Communism (her life under Communism), Liberty on Life Support (under Obama), and U.N. Agenda 21. As a proud naturalized American citizen, she does a great job of helping Americans understand the principles that make it indeed exceptional as a Constitutional Republic and not a democracy.   I talk in the beginning about my own recent spiritual growth, if you would like to keep up with that. Ginger and I are feeling even closer in touch with God's Spirit of Freedom and God's Spirit of Love as they have been vested in America, and those spirits seem to be enjoying a renaissance among those we know.    ______   Learn more about Dr. Peter Breggin's work: https://breggin.com/   See more from Dr. Breggin's long history of being a reformer in psychiatry: https://breggin.com/Psychiatry-as-an-Instrument-of-Social-and-Political-Control   Psychiatric Drug Withdrawal, the how-to manual @ https://breggin.com/a-guide-for-prescribers-therapists-patients-and-their-families/   Get a copy of Dr. Breggin's latest book: WHO ARE THE “THEY” - THESE GLOBAL PREDATORS? Our summer series on "What Is the Right?" has explored the many ideological camps that make up the Right today, from libertarians and traditionalists to fusionists and "FreeCons." In this episode, we explore the intersection of the Jewish faith with conservative thought. Today, antisemitism is on the rise, Israel is at war, and U.S. Republicans are thinking through what an America-First foreign policy should look like. By stepping back and getting a bird's-eye view of how the Jewish community interacts with conservative movement, the contributions of Jewish thought to Western Civilization, and the work Jewish nonprofits are doing, we hope to have a better sense of where to go from here. Two of the thinkers and leaders best positioned to speak to the Jewish conservative intersection are Tevi Troy and Jonathan Silver, who join Peter for this episode. Tevi Troy is a senior fellow at the Ronald Reagan Institute, a Senior Scholar at Yeshiva University's Straus Center, and a former Deputy Secretary of HHS and senior White House aide. Jonathan Silver is the Chief Programming Officer of Tikvah, the editor of Mosaic, and the Warren R. Stern Senior Fellow of Jewish Civilization.

From ancient Sumerian tablets to the philosophical legacies of Socrates and Descartes, the conversation spans how different civilizations have valued inquiry, the cross-cultural psychology of AI, and what makes humans unique in our drive to ask “why.” For more, explore Edouard's work at www.edouardmachery.com.Check out this GPT we trained on the conversationTimestamps00:00 – 05:00 Origins of question-asking, Sumerian writing, norms in early civilizations, authority and written text05:00 – 10:00 Values in AI across cultures, RLHF, tech culture in the Bay Area vs. broader American values10:00 – 15:00 Cross-cultural AI study: Taiwan vs. USA, privacy and collectivism, urban vs. rural mindset divergence15:00 – 20:00 History of curiosity in the West, from vice to virtue post-15th century, link to awe and skepticism20:00 – 25:00 Magic, alchemy, and experimentation in early science, merging maker and scholarly traditions25:00 – 30:00 Rise of public dissections, philosophy as meta-curiosity, Socratic questioning as foundational30:00 – 35:00 Socrates, Plato, Aristotle—transmission of philosophical curiosity, human uniqueness in questioning35:00 – 40:00 Language, assertion, imagination, play in animals vs. humans, symbolic worlds40:00 – 45:00 Early moderns: Montaigne, Descartes, rejection of Aristotle, rise of foundational science45:00 – 50:00 Confucianism and curiosity, tradition and authority, contrast with India and Buddhist thought50:00 – 55:00 Epistemic virtues project, training curiosity, philosophical education across cultures, spiritual curiosityKey InsightsCuriosity hasn't always been a virtue. In Western history, especially through Christian thought until the 15th century, curiosity was viewed as a vice—something dangerous and prideful—until global exploration and scientific inquiry reframed it as essential to human understanding.Question-asking is culturally embedded. Different societies place varying emphasis on questioning. While Confucian cultures promote curiosity within hierarchical structures, Christian traditions historically linked it with sin—except when directed toward divine matters.Urbanization affects curiosity more than nationality. Machery found that whether someone lives in a city or countryside often shapes their mindset more than their cultural background. Cosmopolitan environments expose individuals to diverse values, prompting greater openness and inquiry.AI ethics reveals cultural alignment. In studying attitudes toward AI in the U.S. and Taiwan, expected contrasts in privacy and collectivism were smaller than anticipated. The urban, global culture in both countries seems to produce surprisingly similar ethical concerns. The scientific method emerged from curiosity. The fusion of the maker tradition (doing) and the scholarly tradition (knowing) in the 13th–14th centuries helped birth experimentation, public dissection, and eventually modern science—all grounded in a spirit of curiosity.Philosophy begins with meta-curiosity. From Socratic questioning to Plato's dialogues and Aristotle's treatises, philosophy has always been about asking questions about questions—making “meta-curiosity” the core of the discipline.Only humans ask why. Machery notes that while animals can make requests, they don't seem to ask questions. Humans alone communicate assertions and engage in symbolic, imaginative, question-driven thought, setting us apart cognitively and culturally.

Returning guest Les Norris (Radiobaghdad) channels his 16-year-old self as he joins Rob to unpack Circle Jerks' 1985 release, 'Wonderful'. Keith Morris and company dialed down the tempos and leaned into the metal for this, their fourth studio album, but at the end of the day their killer riffs and biting - at times goofy - sense of humor won us over.  Songs discussed in this episode: Fortunate Son (CCR cover) - Circle Jerks; Pillz - Radiobaghdad; Sears & Applebee's - Les Norris; Over The Mountain - Ozzy Osbourne; Red Tape (Live from The Decline of Western Civilization, 1980), Wonderful, Firebaugh, Making The Bombs - Circle Jerks; Soul Craft - Bad Brains; Mrs Jones - Circle Jerks; I Wanna Destroy You - Circle Jerks with Debbie Gibson; Void You Out - Off!; Dude, When The Shit Hits The Fan, American Heavy Metal Weekend - Circle Jerks; I Against I - Bad Brains; I, I & I, The Crowd, Killing For Jesus, Karma Stew, 15 Minutes, Rock House, Another Broken Heart For Snake - Circle Jerks; I Go Home - Les Norris

Today Razib talks to David  Gress, a Danish historian. The son of an American literary scholar and a Danish writer, he grew up in Denmark, read Classics at Cambridge, and then earned a Ph.D. in medieval history from Bryn Mawr College in the US in 1981. During a fellowship form 1982-1992 at Stanford University's Hoover Institution, he published on Cold‑War strategy, German political culture, and Nordic security. He has been a visiting fellow and lecturer at Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge, fellow at the Danish Institute of International Affairs, an assistant professor of Classics at Aarhus University, and professor of the history of civilization at Boston University. He co‑directed the Center for the Study of America and the West at the Foreign Policy Research Institute in Philadelphia and remains a senior fellow of the Danish free‑market think tank CEPOS while writing a regular column for Jyllands‑Posten. His breakthrough book, From Plato to NATO: The Idea of the West and Its Opponents (1998), argues that Western success sprang from a hard‑edged fusion of Roman order, Germanic liberty, Christian morality, and Smithian economics, rather than being a single disgraceful arc from Greco‑Roman‐paganism to secular Enlightenment that bypassed the Middle Ages. Razib asks Gress how he would have written Plato to NATO today, more than 25 years later, and he says he would have emphasized Christianity's role in creating a unified Western culture out of Greco-Roman and Germanic diversity more. Gress also reiterates that he does not deny the Greek foundation of Western Civilization, but rather, his work was a corrective to a very thin and excessively motivated and partisan narrative that stripped out vast periods of European history. They also discuss Gress' own own peculiar identity, the son of an American, born to a Danish mother, raised in Denmark who converted to Catholicism as an adult, and how that all fits into a broader European identity. They also discuss the impact of mass immigration on the national identities of Europe in the last generation, and Gress' opinions as to the European future. Razib also asks Gress about the role that evolutionary ideas may have in shaping human history, and how his own views may have changed since From Plato to NATO. They also discuss when it is plausible to say that the West was a coherent idea, and whether the Protestant Reformation was the beginning of the end for the unitary civilization that was Latin Christendom.
