Dr. Ursula Betka was one of my favourite lecturers and tutors during my 6 years at Melbourne University studying art history in the 1990's.  Her area of specialisation, in which she has a Ph.D,  focused on Medieval and Renaissance sacred images. On 3rd December, Ursula's beautiful new book, published by Hardie Grant, is coming out and I was lucky enough to receive an advance copy.  Titled “Techniques of Painting and Gilding in Late Medieval and Early Renaissance Italy.  Egg Tempera and Gold Leaf on Wood Panel”, this sumptuously illustrated, hard back book is a detailed technical manual on the time-honoured painting tradition of egg tempera, used historically for sacred images of the Madonna and Child. Ursula works in a range of historical materials and methods such as egg tempera painting and gilding on wood, parchment and glass, exploring ways in which these traditions and techniques might convey profound beauty and resonate meaning today. Ursula integrates her practice with the teaching and writing of art history by examining the function and context of sacred art objects and the ways in which artistic creation expresses the yearnings of the soul. The enduring symbolic values associated with pigments and colours, exotic decorative fabrics and various landscape and architectural settings is also explored. Ursula's book-launch coincides with an exhibition of works featured in the book. See the links below for details and where to buy Ursula's book. Say What You Mean - Matthew 5:33-37 "The Body of B. Franklin, Printer; like the Cover of an old Book, Its Contents torn out, And stript of its Lettering and Gilding, Lies here, Food for Worms. But the Work shall not be wholly lost; For it will, as he believ'd, appear once more, In a new & more perfect Edition, Corrected and amended By the Author." “I have seen your Epitaph…Believe on Jesus, and get a feeling possession of God in your heart, and you cannot possibly be disappointed of your second edition finally corrected, and infinitely amended.” Consider that a recent poll found that 63% of Americans said religion was somewhat or very important in their lives. But over half of them who said that do not go to religious services more than once a year. And this is actually truer of older conservatives than younger people. In today's passage we are going to see Jesus command His disciples to say what they mean and do what they say without making excuses. Read Matthew 5:33-37 Jesus didn't want His disciples to be like the Pharisees, who obeyed outwardly but didn't have real relationship with God. They had even added silly loopholes to commands, setting aside the “spirit” of full obedience. Jesus brings two commands together - V. 33 You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. - Ex. 20:16 If a man vows a vow to the LORD, or swears an oath to bind himself by a pledge, he shall not break his word. He shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth. - Numbers 30:2 (see also Deut. 23:21) Notice there it speaks of two things: an oath made with the Lord, and bringing God into YOUR oath with somebody else. One thing I told you a few weeks ago is that sometimes in the Old Testament God regulated what he didn't endorse, and I think that applies to flippantly bringing God into YOUR vows with others. Don't misuse God's name when making promises to others - V. 34-36 The leaders in Jesus' day didn't want to blaspheme, but they did want to leave themselves wiggle room to break their word. And so they said it was okay to swear by lesser things. Jesus rejects all that as sinful duplicity. What Jesus was forbidding here was duplicity – especially religious duplicity – using God or things of God as an excuse. Just say what you mean and do what you promised! - V. 37 The precept in this passage is keep your word; the principle is people need to be able to count on you to have healthy relationships; The person is that we can count on God to keep every promise He has made! How to make good decisions (Informed ‘yeses' and ‘nos'): 1. All important decisions should invoke a 1-day waiting rule, particularly those that involve a lot of money. 2. Pray about every important decision. 3. Analyze your decision with scripture. 4. Grow close enough to God that you heed Holy Spirit ‘red flag' warnings. 5. Seek godly counsel rather than making decisions in isolation. Keeping our word is the default setting of believers – but there are times you do need to break your word, especially when God is convicting you about something you never should have said yes to. In those cases you may want to talk with a strong believer about the best strategy going forward. Did you catch what Jesus said at the end of verse 37? – Not keeping your commitment is evil.

According to the Tartarian Empire conspiracy theory there once existed a massive, advanced regime that stretched over much of the Asian continent. This Empire's power was so great that they built structures all over the world, including in Africa, North America and South America. Buildings such as the White House in Washington D.C. and the Great Pyramids in Egypt were built by the great, globe spanning Tartarian empire. They were able to accomplish this in part thanks to advanced technology that is lost to time, like batteries powered by the Earth which distributed electricity wirelessly. This theory has spawned a community of people who pour through old European maps and pictures of 19th century buildings in search of evidence for this lost empire, then post their findings on Reddit and Tik tok. But was there really a lost empire called “Tartaria?” Or have conspiracy theorists on the internet misinterpreted an archaic European term for parts of Asia then proceeded to desperately search for evidence of a better world that was lost to time? Saving Elephants | Millennials defending & expressing conservative values

In the aftermath of the Civil War and prior to the first World War lies an often overlooked era in American history known as the Gilded Age.  This was an extraordinarily “messy” period where it's often difficult to identify the heroes to extol or villains to condemn.  But it is also a period that has unusually similar parallels to our own times from rapid technological advancements, growing partisanship, and the unraveling of communities and traditions.  We might benefit from a closer understanding of the lessons learned in this messy period.   Saving Elephants host Josh Lewis is joined by returning guest Avi Woolf, a fellow podcaster who has been working through an in-depth and nuanced series on the Gilded Age on his podcast Avi's Conversational Corner.  He joins Josh to help decipher the mess of this era.   About Avi Woolf Avi Woolf is a writer, editor, translator, and podcaster whose work has been published in Arc Digital, Commentary, National Review, The Bulwark, and The Dispatch.  He was chief editor of the online Medium publication Conservative Pathways, and he—in his words—"hopes to help forge a path for a conservatism which is relevant for the 21st century while not abandoning the best of past wisdom.”   Avi hosts his own podcast entitled Avi's Conversational Corner, a podcast on culture, history, and politics in a broad perspective.  You can find Avi on Twitter @AviWoolf

Oder auch das Rematch "28 years later" zwischen Richie Burnett und Peter Wright. Wer da noch nicht vor Freude Ballett tanzt, lässt sich wohl grad ein Gilding-Tattoo stechen. Co-hosts Alex Moss and Burton DeWitt are back with a new episode after the Gibraltar Darts Trophy. Alex and Burton start the show with a review of last weekend's Gibraltar Darts Trophy and discuss if title winner Damon Heta can kick on in the majors during the rest of the year, and also if missed match darts in the final will impact runner-up Peter Wright going forward. Then, recent European Tour finalist Andrew Gilding (13:32) stops by to look back on his career so far, his first run in the PDC and that infamous run to the UK Open semi-finals, as well as his resurgence in 2022, reaching multiple finals on the ProTour, and his hopes for the rest of the year. Alex and Burton continue the show with a look at the European Championship draw for next week, before looking back at the Challenge Tour season and successes for Scott Williams, Robert Owen and Danny van Trijp. Next, Grant Sampson (49:56) joins us after winning the South Africa Qualifier for the PDC World Championship. Grant talks through his time in darts so far, how he picked up the game again while at home during the pandemic, working with Charles Losper, and then beating Devon Petersen on the way to winning the qualifier to secure a debut at Ally Pally in December. Alex and Burton then close out the show by giving their thoughts on the WDF's latest World Masters update, before delving into some listener questions! *** Click here to support this week's guest Grant Sampson on his trip to the UK for his first PDC World Championship *** Thank you to Dartwolf for sponsoring this podcast. The Gilded Age, A Tale of Today by Mark Twain audiobook. The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today is an 1873 novel by Mark Twain and Charles Dudley Warner that satirizes greed and political corruption in post-Civil War America. The term gilded age, commonly given to the era, comes from the title of this book. Twain and Warner got the name from Shakespeare's King John (1595): "To gild refined gold, to paint the lily... is wasteful and ridiculous excess." Gilding a lily, which is already beautiful and not in need of further adornment, is excessive and wasteful, characteristics of the age Twain and Warner wrote about in their novel. Another interpretation of the title, of course, is the contrast between an ideal "Golden Age," and a less worthy "Gilded Age," as gilding is only a thin layer of gold over baser metal, so the title now takes on a pejorative meaning as to the novel's time, events and people. Although not one of Twain's more well-known works, it has appeared in more than 100 editions since its original publication in 1873. Twain and Warner originally had planned to issue the novel with illustrations by Thomas Nast. The book is remarkable for two reasons–-it is the only novel Twain wrote with a collaborator, and its title very quickly became synonymous with graft, materialism, and corruption in public life.

The phrase, gilding the lily, comes from a Shakespeare play, King John. The line in the play is actually, "to paint the lily." The quotation reads, in part, "To gild refined gold, to paint the lily / To throw a perfume on the violet. . .. / Is wasteful and ridiculous excess." What it means is simple: when you already have something beautiful, e.g., a lily, gold, a violet, don't attempt to make it more beautiful. All you do is risk ruining it. For a cross examiner, this is a golden rule - DON'T GILD THE LILY. In other words, once you've gotten the answer that you wanted or a good answer, leave it alone, don't attempt to make it better because you really just risk making it worse or ruining it. How? For example, you've gotten the witness the admit to describe the room in which he says a crime occurred that he personally observed incorrectly. Leave it alone. Instead, so many questioners in search of the "dunk" or in an effort to "make the point even clearer" ask further questions and clue the witness in that he made a mistake. For example, rather than leaving the wrong description alone, the lawyer follows up with more: Q: Now, you've described a room with a single bed right? A: I believe so. Q: You mean a narrow bed as opposed to a queen or a king, right? (now the witness is clued in because the lawyer is going back and trying to make this point again. Realizing that he made a mistake, he backtracks on the lawyer) A: Well, it might've been a queen or king size bed. I wasn't really paying attention that closely at that point because I was so startled by what I saw. The lawyer has gilded the lily. Rather than leave the answer alone, he tried to improve on it with more follow up only to ruin it. In Episode 17, I explore this phenomenon and encourage you all to stop, respect the good answer and don't gild the lily to make it better.

A woman’s face with Nature’s own hand painted Hast thou, the master mistress of my passion; A woman’s gentle heart but not acquainted With shifting change as is false women’s fashion; An eye more bright than theirs, less false in rolling, Gilding the object whereupon it gazeth; A man in hue all hues in his controlling, Which steals men’s eyes and women’s souls amazeth. And for a woman wert thou first created, Till Nature as she wrought thee fell a-doting, And by addition me of thee defeated, By adding one thing to my purpose nothing.     But since she prick’d thee out for women’s pleasure,     Mine be thy love, and thy love’s use their treasure.

Aired 06/10/12 PAUL GILDING says it's time to stop worrying about climate change. We need instead to brace for impact because global crisis is no longer avoidable. He believes this Great Disruption started in 2008, with spiking food and oil prices and melting ice caps. It is not simply about fossil fuels and carbon footprints. We have come to the end of Economic Growth, Version 1.0, a world economy based on consumption and waste, where we lived beyond the means of our planet's ecosystems and resources According to Gilding, the coming decades will see loss, suffering, and conflict as our planetary overdraft is paid; however, they will also bring out the best humanity can offer: compassion, innovation, resilience, and adaptability. Gilding says we must fight-and win-what he calls The One Degree War to prevent catastrophic warming of the earth. He believes the crisis offers us a chance to replace our addiction to growth with an ethic of sustainability, and an unmatched business opportunity as old industries collapse and new companies reshape our economy. In the aftermath of the Great Disruption, we will measure "growth" not by quantity of stuff but quality of life. PAUL GILDING is an independent writer, advisor and advocate for action on climate change and sustainability. He has been involved with and led activist campaigns on a wide variety of social and environmental issues and served as Executive Director, Greenpeace Australia and Greenpeace International. Gilding founded Ecos Corporation in 1995, consulting to some of the world's largest corporations on issues of sustainability until its sale in 2008. His first book is THE GREAT DISRUPTION: Why the Climate Crisis will Bring on the End of Shopping and the Birth of a New World. http://paulgilding.com

The Great Disruption Paul Gilding, Professor, Cambridge University Program for Sustainability Leadership Richard Heinberg, Senior Fellow, Post Carbon Institute Growth as we’ve known it is over, say Paul Gilding and Richard Heinberg. “The idea that we can keep on growing the economy up against the physical limits of the Earth” – water, oil, and land – “is not physically possible,” says Gilding, author, The Great Disruption. “We’re in a trap really. If we grow the economy, then we’ll hit those limits again. Prices will go up. Oil prices will go up. Food prices will go up. And the economy will go down,” he says. “If we don’t grow the economy, we’re going to drown in debt. We’re going to take a while to find our way out of this morass that we’ve dug ourselves into.” Richard Heinberg, author, The End of Growth, has written that it took decades for nominal GDP to recover after the Great Depression. But the fallout of the Great Recession, he says, will be much worse. “I don’t think we’ll ever see growth the way we experienced during the decades of the 20th century.” “We have to create an economy that exists within nature’s limits,” he says. “We’ve been borrowing from the past, by way of fossil fuels. We’re also borrowing from future generations, by way of debt – all so that we can consumer as much as possible right now.” Gilding highlights one industry, solar, for which projections are increasingly optimistic. Globally, the industry is growing 40% each year, he notes, and every time the industry doubles, the price per watt falls by 20%. By 2020, he expects solar to be cheaper than coal. That’s not to say that energy incumbents will be easily swept aside. Oil firms are using every known trick, and developing more, to secure new deposits, Heinberg says: “We’re getting better and better at scraping the bottom of the barrel.”“They are fighting tooth and nail,” says Paul Gilding. “They are going to do whatever it takes to defend their cash. It’s up to government to overcome that, and to have the courage to stare them down and to enforce the change.” Such a stand is underway in Gilding’s native Australia, where parliament just passed legislation placing a price on carbon. Yes, the legislation is a compromise, with some carve-outs for energy-intensive industries, says Gilding, but “the key thing is that we’re going to cross that dreaded line that you haven’t crossed yet, which is that we’re saying nationally: you have to deal with the issue.” “I think our country has a larger capacity for denial,” says Richard Heinberg, an understatement that draws laughs. “I think we’re going to have to hit the wall before we see fundamental change.” This program was recorded in front of a live audience at The Commonwealth Club in San francisco on November 7, 2011

2011 has brought with it many challenges to the global community, namely weather extremes pushing up record food prices, and political instability spiking oil prices. Until now our economy has been based on consumption and waste, where we lived beyond our means and the resources of the planet’s ecosystems. According to Paul Gilding we have come to the end of economic growth as we know it and now it is time for Economic Growth 2.0. Gilding paints a picture of the coming decades as ones filled with loss, suffering, conflict, geopolitical instability, food shortages and massive economic change. However, he believes all of this will bring out humanity’s best qualities; compassion, innovation and adaptability will carry us through these coming crises and make us a stronger and more advanced civilization.
