To escape the sweltering, smoggy summers of New York City, a group of first generation Americans sought reprieve in the Catskill Mountains of Upstate New York. As the summers rolled on, through good times and bad, the New York crowd continued to flock north. The old boarding houses evolved into bungalows, and then into world class resorts. Welcome to the Catskills, where modern hospitality, modern comedy, and the best entertainment money could buy was all cultivated. The primary resource for this episode; It Happened in the Catskills: Oral History in the Words of Busboys, Bellhops, Guests, Prioprieters, Comedians, Agents, and Others Who Lived It , by Myrna Katz & Harvey Frommer.

From 1030: In his now familiar style of patching together a quilt of memories from ballplayers, managers, executives, fans and sportswriters alike, Harvey Frommer unwinds all the drama and even some of the silliness – I’m looking at you Manny Rodriguez, relieving yourself behind the scoreboard during a lull in the action – that gives character to concrete and steel. I’m not a Red Sox fan, but if I were, I’d want to find a copy of Remembering Fenway Park under my pillow in time for opening day.

From 2008: My recollections are a drop in the bucket compared with the ones collected by Harvey Frommer in his new coffee table book, Remembering Yankee Stadium. It is packed not just with oral histories collected from some of the greatest Yankees players, managers, sports writers and fans, but is also filled with awesome photos from decades of historic moments.

Yankee Stadium and Fenway Park, like the teams they house, will forever be linked in sports history. We look back on the unique history of these iconic ballparks with writer Harvey Frommer who examines how the stadiums nearly contributed to a trade involving Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio. Later, Stadiums USA’s Mark Madorin looks at venues hosting neutral site college football games and how drawings of a new Raiders stadium in Las Vegas looks strangely familiar to previous plans in Carson.

TODAY’S GUEST: HARVEY FROMMER, AUTHOR, REMEMBERING YANKEE STADIUM(October 2008) There are two memories of Yankee Stadium that I hold dear. The first dates back to 1967. I was six years old and my grandfather took me to the House That Ruth Built for the first time to see my idol, Mickey Mantle. There are two things I remember about that night: The Mick hit a home run but I was mostly scared to death being way up high in the upper deck.My second memory is of the last time I was at the stadium, June 16, 1997. My wife ordered tickets for us to see the first ever interleague game between the Yankees and their crosstown rival, the Mets. It was the first game that would ever count between the two teams. We flew up from Florida just for the game.By then, I was more a Mets fan than a Yankees fan and, even more, a Tampa Bay Rays fan. It was as electric an atmosphere as I could imagine any World Series game might offer. But my recollections are a drop in the bucket compared with the ones collected by Harvey Frommer in his new coffee table book, Remembering Yankee Stadium. It is packed not just with oral histories collected from some of the greatest Yankees players, managers, sports writers and fans, but is also filled with awesome photos from decades of historic moments.Subscribe to Mr. Media for FREE on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=MrMediaRadioFor more interviews like this one: http://www.MrMedia.com What is Mr. Media® Interviews?
