We revisit one of the greatest baseball trade deadline deals. Hint: It came on June 15, 1964, and then visit early 20th century Los Angeles and take a look at a neglected corner of baseball history, starting with Joe DiMaggio's father in Sicily, journeying to Japan, and wrapping up in Texas with a player called “Goo-Goo.” And don't forget “Sore” Feets! The Infinite Inning is a journey to the past to understand the present using baseball as our time machine. America's brighter mirror, baseball reflects, anticipates, and even mocks the stories we tell ourselves about our world today. Baseball Prospectus's Steven Goldman shares his obsessions: history from inside and outside of the game, politics, stats, and Casey Stengel quotations. Along the way, we'll try to solve the puzzle that is the Infinite Inning: How do you find the joy in life when you can't get anybody out?
Shampoo, lotions, guns, knives and a lot of other things are confiscated at airport security checkpoints every day. What happens to all those things? Can you ever get them back? This episode starts by taking a look. https://www.rd.com/article/return-confiscated-items-tsa/ Even if you don't believe in them, you probably participate in some superstitions. Maybe you knock on wood or avoid walking under a ladder or steer clear of black cats. Where do these superstitions come from? Why do they still exist since we know they don't really do anything? Here to explain this is Arie Kaplan, who has written numerous books and graphic novels and is also a television writer. Arie is author of a book called The Encyclopedia of Curious Rituals and Superstitions: Ancient and Remarkable Traditions That Will Captivate Your Mind (https://amzn.to/44xpZ8m). It is the 250th anniversary of Paul Revere's ride through Boston. While you likely learned something about it in school, there is much more to the story you probably don't know. Not only was Paul Revere a skilled horseman, he was also a “self-taught” dentist, bell maker and an excellent silversmith and engraver. And there is much more to his legacy as you will hear from my guest Kostya Kennedy. He is a former senior writer and editor at Sports Illustrated and has written books about Jackie Robinson, Joe DiMaggio and Pete Rose. He is also author of the book, The Ride: Paul Revere and the Night That Saved America (https://amzn.to/4klhtyY). What is the best way to construct a fire? There is one right answer whether you are building a campfire, a bonfire or stacking charcoal in your grill. What's strange is – you instinctively know how to do it. Bitcoin continues its historic streak—43 consecutive days closing above $100,000. The Swan Signal crew dives into what this milestone means, including comparisons to Joe DiMaggio's legendary hitting streak and the waning attention from normies, despite Bitcoin reaching all-time highs.Steven shares insight on why emerging markets and Bitcoin have outperformed, citing Lynn Alden's early calls. Meanwhile, John highlights how the broader TradFi world is just starting to wake up to Bitcoin's disruptive potential—despite cringe moments like Brian Armstrong pitching Bitcoin as a “new” idea or Wall Street macro types clumsily suggesting gold/oil-backed stablecoins from geopolitical rivals.Other key points:Bitcoin treasury plays are seeing early-stage momentum, with large speculative capital still sitting on the sidelines. The Genius Act, recently passed, lays the regulatory groundwork for stablecoins—some say this could bolster dollar dominance while indirectly boosting Bitcoin.Stablecoin growth is explained as a stepping stone to Bitcoin, not a competitor.Discussion on whether the classic 4-year Bitcoin cycle is dead, with some leaning toward a slower, more mature “Saylor Cycle” structure.Notable Quotes:“Listen to Bitcoiners. BT and Sal debate the significance of individual player records versus team success in baseball, sparked by Pete Alonso's pursuit of the Mets' all-time home run record. Sal champions individual milestones and historical records, referencing iconic feats like Joe DiMaggio's hit streak and George Brett's pursuit of .400. In contrast, BT prioritizes team championships and views many individual Mets records, including Alonso's, as less significant due to the franchise's historical futility and the "watered-down" nature of some modern baseball statistics. The discussion delves into the Mets' all-time home run list, revealing their low standing among MLB franchises, and touches upon player contracts and the long-term prospects of current Mets stars like Alonso, Lindor, and Soto.

Yup, an actual text sent by Patti to the Pottymouth because the new Pope is a legit sports fan. And oh how Chicago is enjoying that! We've got some nods to Mothers Day – badass Veronica Alvarez is gifted maternity baseball pants, Jace and Josh's mom gets to wear a split jersey to watch them face off on a major league field, and Pottymouth gets a hat. That Patti gets to wear. Jasson Dominguez overtakes a record previously held by Joe DiMaggio. Jackson Merrill says “daddy ball” and something mysterious that we can only guess at, and Andy Pages takes the real job. Some Houston fans overstep into dangerous and hateful territory over Lance McCullers. PIT can't catch a break anywhere, from fans, stadium staff, or managers. Rafael Devers is in need of some Crash Davis to get himself together. And Ayami Sato pitches for the Maple Leafs (the baseball ones, not the hockey ones). Pottymouth invites local friends of the show to Patti's birthday party. It's a two homonym day on the show, see if you can spot them both!We say, “You're not really wearing pants,” “Tennis and Wordle. The death of Marilyn Monroe. The boys begins with a look into her early years. Born Norma Jean Mortenson in 1926, Marilyn's childhood was far from easy, with her mother suffering a mental breakdown when she was just eight years old, leaving her to spend much of her youth in foster care. The boys joke about how “Norma Jean” doesn't quite have the same star power as “Marilyn Monroe,” but they quickly move on to discuss her rise to fame.At just 20 years old, Marilyn was signed by 20th Century Fox, where she was transformed from a model into the iconic actress we know today. By 1950, she was already gaining fame, and by 1954, her infamous affair with JFK began, sparking rumors that would last for decades. The boys touch on her marriages to baseball legend Joe DiMaggio and playwright Arthur Miller, with a bit of humor thrown in, especially when Eric and Sean wonder about Miller's appeal compared to Marilyn's stunning beauty. From her platinum blonde hair to her famous red lips and white dress, Marilyn became the embodiment of stardom in the ‘50s and ‘60s. But beneath the fame and glamour, the boys point out, Marilyn's life was far from perfect, with her struggles in her personal relationships, her mental health issues, and an alleged affair with Bobby Kennedy. As the episode moves into the discussion of her tragic end, the boys delve into the conspiracy theories surrounding her death. Was it suicide? Or was she silenced for knowing too much? The episode ends on a cliffhanger, with the boys teasing more mysterious details to come in Part 2.The boys continue to explore the strange and unsettling details surrounding Marilyn Monroe's death. They start by recounting the events of August 1962, leading up to her final hours. The boys paint a picture of a woman at the mercy of the people around her—her psychiatrist, her housekeeper, and the people she loved, all seemingly playing their parts in a tragic, tangled web. Marilyn's strange behavior in the days leading up to her death, including mysterious phone calls and an unsettling phone call to Bobby Kennedy, adds more fuel to the fire. The boys examine the conflicting reports surrounding her condition that evening, as well as the discrepancies in the timeline of her death. Why did Marilyn's psychiatrist wait so long to call for help? Why did Peter Lawford and the Kennedys seem to vanish when she needed them the most? These questions lead to even more conspiracy theories—was Marilyn's death really a suicide, or did the Kennedys and the mob have a hand in it?The boys touch on the questionable actions of those closest to Marilyn, from her housekeeper, Eunice, to her psychiatrist, Dr. Greens, who was heavily involved in her life. The boys point out the eerie timing of events, from the strange phone calls she received the night before her death to the conflicting statements made by her associates afterward.By the end of Part 2, the boys discuss the most popular conspiracy theories, including the possibility that Marilyn was intentionally silenced by the Kennedys or the mob after she threatened to expose secrets that could have damaged the political establishment. With her death still shrouded in mystery, the boys agree that there's more to Marilyn Monroe's story than meets the eye.www.patreon.com/theconspiracypodcast

The Sports Experience Podcast with Chris Quinn and Dominic DiTolla
Episode 296 of “The Sports Experience Podcast” is here & we're continuing our block of episodes on the greatest players in the history of the Negro Leagues.Arguably one of the greatest pitchers of all-time, Satchel Paige was an absolute legend on the mound. After he ran into legal trouble in his youth in Alabama, Paige focused on his love of baseball and learned to pitch in a reform school. Upon his release, the young right-handed Paige became a star in the Negro Leagues. Armed with a devastating fastball, an array of breaking pitches and multiple release points, Paige dominated the competition as a member of the Pittsburgh Crawfords and Kansas City Monarchs.Paige was a six-time All-Star, won a World Series in 1942 and even displayed his talents in the California Winter League against legends like Joe DiMaggio. Paige even found success outside the Negro Leagues in places like Puerto Rico, Mexico and the Dominican Republic. In 1947, Paige and Bob Feller went on a barnstorming tour of the country which played integrated exhibition games between some of the top talent in baseball.Though a past injury had limited his fastball, Paige became the first African American pitcher in Major League Baseball in 1948 for the Cleveland Indians. What made that even sweeter was the fact that he pitched in and was part of Cleveland's World Series winning team that season.Paige then made two All-Star teams in 1952 and 1953 as a member of the St. Louis Browns in 1952 and 1953, and even pitched at age 59 for the Kansas City Athletics in 1965!Paige ultimately received the highest honor in the sport in 1971 when he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.Connect with us on Instagram!Chris Quinn: @cquinncomedyDominic DiTolla: @ditolladominicProducer: @ty_englestudioInstagram: @thesportsexperiencepodcastIf you enjoy this podcast, please help support us @:https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/the-sports-experience-pod/support#sportspodcast#comedypodcast #satchelpaige#baseballplayer#baseball

Baseball painter Dick Perez and director Marq Evans join the boys to talk about Dick's legendary career, re-working one of his pieces for Ichiro, beefing with Joe DiMaggio, who was his favorite Diamond King, whether or not he is the world's most reproduced artists (he very well might be!) and, of course, Marq's new documentary “The Diamond King”. This week we take an introspective look at the life and baseball journey of one Peter Lawrence "Yogi" Berra, who would become one of baseball's greatest characters and catchers. The World War II veteran and unprecedented 13 time World Champion as a player. was best described by his manager Casey Stengal, " As a very strange fellow with remarkable baseball abilities." He served as the anchor and bridge between the Joe DiMaggio and the Mickey Mantle era of the Yankees of the 1940's and 1950's, the storied franchise's most dominanat era. Not only would he craft a legendary playing career through grit and determination, he would also become a cultural icon, whose fame transcended the baseball diamond with his Yogiism style of speech, with phrases such as, "It aint over till it's over." and, " A Nickel aint worth a dime anymore." #YogiBerra #TheHill #JoeGaragiola #StLouisCardinals #BranchRickey #NewYorkYankees #LeoBrown #GeorgeWeiss #BrooklynDodgers #MelOtt #JackieRobinson #DonLarsen #CaseyStengel #GeorgeSteinbrenner #CarmenShort #BillDickey #GilHodges #PhilLinz
Infinite Inning 324: The Way We Live Now (Again) In a largely improvised episode we reexperience current events through the lens of Joe DiMaggio's 1941 hitting streak, counting the days while the war stays away, while once again a government effort requires us to rally ‘round Jackie Robinson—and Abraham Lincoln too, and we do so while checking in on the better brand of shortstops offered by the Negro Leagues' Newark Eagles and Philadelphia Stars (and shame Connie Mack one more time). The Infinite Inning is not only about baseball but a state of mind. Steven Goldman discusses the game's present, past, and future with forays outside the foul lines to the culture at large. Expect stats, anecdotes, digressions, explorations of writing and fandom, and more Casey Stengel quotations than you thought possible. Along the way, they'll try to solve the puzzle that is the Infinite Inning: How do you find the joy in life when you can't get anybody out?

Any time you can get in the same sentence at Joe DiMaggio & Lou Gehrig, you're doing okay. Aaron Judge became the 3rd fastest Yankee to 500 extra base hits (yes, with a HR). Elsewhere, Alex Bregman went deep and Taijuan Walker made mom proud. Marilyn Monroe is one of the greatest Hollywood stars of all time. She rose from orphan to icon by creating an on screen character America could not peel their eyes away from. And she did it all while battling anxiety, depression and addiction. Along the way she bedded, married, and otherwise conquered America's most impressive men — Joe DiMaggio, Arthur Miller, Frank Sinatra and President John F. Kennedy to name a few. And her relationship with JFK and his younger brother, Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, would prove disastrous and result in long-running rumors and conspiracy theories about her death that are as hard to debunk as they are to dismiss.
