When I read his work, I feel like he is a close friend that I lost. That's how much he resonates with me.Today we meet Kim Hines and we're talking about the book that saved her life: The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin.Kim Hines is a playwright, actor, director, and author. Her plays have been produced across the United States, including tours at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Kim has performed at many theaters including the Illusion Theater, Penumbra Theater, and the Guthrie Theatre. She was a founding member of Mixed Blood Theater. Kim has directed at theaters across the Twin Cities of Minnesota, and at Cornell University in New York, University of Northern Iowa, and Kansas University. Her YA novel Wingo Fly was published in 2020.The Fire Next Time was a 1963 national bestseller. It galvanized the United States, giving passionate voice to the civil rights movement. Both a evocation of James Baldwin's early life in Harlem and an examination of racial injustice, this book is intensely personal and provocative. It is written as two "letters" on the occasion of the centennial of the Emancipation Proclamation.Connect with Kimfacebook: facebook.com/kim.hines920/website: simplykimhines.comOur BookshopVisit our Bookshop for  new releases, current bestsellers, banned books, critically acclaimed LGBTQ books, or peruse the books featured on our podcasts: bookshop.org/shop/thisqueerbookTo purchase The Fire Next Time visit: https://bookshop.org/a/82376/9780679744726Become an Associate Producer!Become an Associate Producer of our podcast through a $20/month sponsorship on Patreon! Keen On Democracy

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 12, 2024 32:09

So what does it mean to be an American? Previous guests on KEEN ON AMERICA like Arlie Russell Hochschild and Thelton Henderson told me that they learnt to be an American during the civil rights unrest of the Sixties. Sara Paretsky, the creator of the incomparable female Chicago detective V.I. Warshawski, might agree. As Paretsky told me, learning what it meant to be American was shaped by her experience in the civil rights struggles in Chicago during the Sixties. And the issue of racial injustice remains with her today, featuring centrally in her new V.I. Warshawski thriller, Pay Dirt, a novel which returns returns us to the Kansas of the Civil War.Sara Paretsky revolutionized the mystery world in 1982 when she introduced V.I. Warshawski in Indemnity Only. By creating a detective with the grit and smarts to take on the mean streets, Paretsky challenged a genre in which women historically were vamps or victims. V.I. struck a chord with readers and critics; Indemnity Only was followed by twenty more V.I. novels. Her voice and her world remain vital to readers; the New York Times calls V.I., “a proper hero for these times,” adding, “to us, V.I. is perfect.” While Paretsky's fiction changed the narrative about women, her work also opened doors for other writers. In 1986 she created Sisters in Crime, a worldwide organization to advocate for women crime writers, which earned her Ms. Magazine's 1987 Woman of the Year award. More accolades followed: the British Crime Writers awarded her the Cartier Diamond Dagger for lifetime achievement; Blacklist won the Gold Dagger from the British Crime Writers for best novel of 2004, and she has received the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters from a number of universities. Called “passionate” and “electrifying,” V.I. reflects her creator's own passion for social justice. After chairing the school's first Commission on the Status of Women as a Kansas University undergraduate, Paretsky worked as a community organizer on Chicago's South Side during the turbulent race riots of 1966. Since then, Paretsky's volunteer work has included advocating for healthcare for the mentally ill homeless; mentoring teens in Chicago's most troubled schools, and working for reproductive rights. Through her Sara & Two C-Dogs foundation, she also helps build STEM and arts programs for young people. The actress Kathleen Turner played V.I. Warshawski in the movie of that name. Paretsky's work is celebrated in Pamela Beere Briggs's documentary, Women of Mystery. Today Sara Paretsky's books are published in 30 countries. Paretsky detailed her journey from Kansas farm-girl to New York Times bestseller in her 2007 memoir, Writing in an Age of Silence, which was a National Book Critics Circle Award finalist. In addition, Paretsky has written two stand-alone novels, Ghost Country, and Bleeding Kansas, set in the part of rural Kansas where Paretsky grew up. She has published several short story collections, most recently Love & Other Crimes, and has edited numerous other anthologies. Like her fictional detective, Paretsky has an adored Golden Retriever. Like alto Warshawski, soprano Paretsky doesn't work hard enough at her vocal exercises, but the two women share a love for espresso and rich Italian reds.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting KEEN ON, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy show. I am so grateful to all the listeners who did introductions to their favorite episodes last month. It provided me with a little bit of needed breathing space and now I am back raring to go with my first new episode for 2024, just in time for Black History Month 2024! There is a secondary theme for this month which is “Forgotten Divas,” a favorite topic of mine at any time of year. The term “forgotten” needs to be taken with a grain of salt, because these women are anything but forgotten among those who experienced their singing, teaching, or friendship live and in person. Nevertheless, for want of a better term (Divas Who Deserve to Be As Well-Remembered as Any of Their More Famous Counterparts seems a little wordy), I'll stick with the designation I chose. Today's artist is the only “Forgotten Diva” who is still with us, soprano Delcina Stevenson, born 29 September 1933, so this enables me to also “give flowers” (to coin a present-day term I actually like) to her directly. She was born in Kansas and graduated from Kansas University. After moving to California in 1960, she coached and studied with Lotte Lehmann, Gwendolyn Koldofsky, Martial Singher, and William Vennard, and was a protégée early in her career of Kurt Herbert Adler at the San Francisco Opera. She has lived and performed around the world, primarily in California, New York, and Germany. She possessed one of the most exquisite lyric soprano voices I have ever heard, one which never aged, but simply grew more lush and voluminous. The musical excerpts I have compiled feature her in live and studio recordings from over the course of more than 30 years, ranging Mozart to Sondheim to Rossini, in which that voice is on shimmering display. I am thrilled to introduce (or reintroduce) her to you. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. He went on to spend a number of years working in Catholic education, and now serves as Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Diocese of Tulsa.

As followers of the religion of Jesus, we are called to seek out and create homeplaces, communities to which we can feel safe, be seen, and develop a sense of belonging. And yet, daily, we are confronted with the reality that we live in a society founded upon the principles of class division, racial segregation, and patriarchy. Abolitionists have been working against these divisions for centuries, and recently, there has been an increase in the number of people using abolitionist values to help give us a framework for how we can build a better society for everyone. One of those people is Rev. Dr. Nikia Smith-Robert, Assistant Professor of Religious Studies at Kansas University and founder of Abolitionist Sanctuary. We invite you to join us this Sunday as Rev. Dr. Carter and Rev. Dr. Smith-Robert explore how the values of abolition are crucial for creating a culture of belonging. www.TheLoftLA.org

There were never first-class settings for it in CommandBox so you would have had to use the runwar.args setting to activate. It also required you to include the MariaDB4j jars yourself in the classpath. (Note this is separate from the MariaDB CommandBox module 4 Jan Janek made). The settings it supported were: enable port base directory data directory SQL file to import So my question is, does anyone use the built in MariaDB4j integration in Runwar? If I removed it, would anyone care? If I put in first-class settings and documented it, would people use it? Does it sound useful? Worthless?https://community.ortussolutions.com/t/mariadb4j-support-in-commandbox-runwar/9666 ICYMI - Adobe ColdFusion 2023 released!!!!We are thrilled to announce the highly anticipated release of Adobe ColdFusion 2023!  Packed with cutting-edge features and enhanced performance, this release takes ColdFusion to new heights of innovation.Experience accelerated development, robust security measures, and seamless integration with modern technologies. But did you know there are in fact several ways to deploy CF (or Lucee), including ways to run CFML without even needing to do that? In this session, veteran CF consultant Charlie Arehart will identify these, starting first with WHY it's useful to have different ways to be able to deploy CF/Lucee and CFML.Then he will discuss and demonstrate those several ways--whether you prefer to run CF on your own machine or another (whether hosted or in the cloud), to include even being able to run CFML WITHOUT need of CF (or Lucee) to be "installed" at all. He will cover such topics as installers (GUI and console-based), silent installation (and updates), Commandbox, WAR file deployment, container-based (Docker/Kubernetes) deployment, serverless deployment, as well as CLI-based execution of CFML, and execution via cffiddle and trycf, among others.Buckle up, buttercup, for a fast tour of this varied landscape.https://www.meetup.com/coldfusionmeetup/events/293987033/ "OctoPerf: The Load Testing Tool for Modern Web Apps", Guillaume BetailloulouxThursday June 15th at 12pm US Eastern Time, UTC-4:OctoPerf offers an integrated development Interface that you can use from any browser to execute load tests against your application. But, when writing the same functionality exclusively in ColdFusion, I have to get a little more low-level when implementing the locking (that Redis would normally apply). Specifically, I wanted to think about how to handle locking when I have a background process that needs to clean-up and expunge expired data.https://www.bennadel.com/blog/4472-using-nested-locks-to-synchronize-background-data-cleanup-in-coldfusion.htm 6/5/23 - Tweet - HTMX.org - HTMX threw some shade on Allaire ColdFusion - let's speak up!how many young web developers today can even conceive of a world so based that technology logos could look like this & nobody cringed?people wore this stuff on tee shirts, unembarassed, walking around, living in the moment, high fivingnever forget what they took from youhttps://twitter.com/htmx_org/status/1665728145511657476?s=20.6/6/23 - Blog - Ben Nadel - Building A Magic Link Passwordless Login In ColdFusionAs I build out the Dig Deep Fitness MVP (Minimum Viable Product), I'm trying to do the least amount of work that allows me to start delivering actual value. It's real, it's genuine. It's something that we learned from the Rebbe; to look at every Jew for who they are in their essence. And the trash in their life? Our last discussion with Sleeve was OTR #79, and we catch up right where we left off. Sleeve dives into: What the first off season was like, and how it set up their program moving forward. The impact of the COVID summer and in what ways that continues to impact his program. A simple thing that has helped him not stay “stuck in his ways” and keep pushing to find better ways, means, and methods for all aspects of life. How the law of 100/100 has impacted him both professionally and personally What “really matters” and how “winning the off season” sometimes isn't what leads to the best on field results. How becoming a father changed his thought process and how he sees the word “sacrifice” We hope you're as excited as we are to welcome Coach Sleeve to The Seminar, July 21 and 22 at PLAE HQ!   If you are a Kansas University Basketball fan, sports fan, especially basketball you will hear never heard before stories about “Phoggy” as Mark Allen called his grandpa.  A quick bio about Phog: Forrest Clare "Phog" Allen was an American basketball coach. Known as the "Father of Basketball Coaching,"  He served as the head basketball coach at Baker University (1905–1908), the University of Kansas (1907–1909, 1919–1956), Haskell Institute—now Haskell Indian Nations University (1908–1909), and Warrensburg Teachers College—now the University of Central Missouri (1912–1919), compiling a career college basketball record of 746–264. He said he applied the same treatments to "civilians" as he did to his athletes. His forceful, yet reasonable, disposition helped him become the driving force behind the acceptance of basketball as an official Olympic sport at the 1936 Summer Olympic Games. Allen later worked as an assistant coach in the 1952 Summer Olympics,[7] helping to lead the United States to the gold medal in Helsinki, Finland.
