Brandon Tierney argues for Ichiro Suzuki's claim as the greatest pure hitter of all time, even surpassing legends like Ted Williams and Tony Gwynn. Tierney emphasizes Ichiro's incredible hit totals, especially considering he started his MLB career at the age of 27. He postulates that if Ichiro had come to the MLB at a younger, more conventional age (22-24), he would have easily shattered Pete Rose's all-time hit record and solidified his status as the undisputed hitting king. Tierney highlights Ichiro's "ballplayer" qualities—his lack of weaknesses, ability to hit for average while still possessing power, speed, and fielding prowess—as further proof of his unparalleled talent.

His home run in the second game the day before won the game, 3 - 2. Musial's .924 OPS is the highest of any player 41 years or older in the history of the game. Ellen Adair and Brennan Brown talk about the brand-new instant-classic baseball film EEPHUS. Ellen introduces Brennan (0:40), and then the film (3:50) overviewing its festival appearances, the director Carson Lund, and some of the cast. They summarize the film (10:40) and review the 20-80 scouting scale (13:25) and talk about the scouting director to whom Brennan will be reporting Eephus's grades (14:30). They begin with Amount of Baseball (18:50), discussing this film's tool-defining wealth of baseball in numerous ways. Baseball Accuracy (26:37) delves into the baseball ability as depicted, and some of the questionable ball/strike calls that end the game. Ellen brings up an apparent What Inning Is It discrepancy that is not what it seems, and Graham as the MIA third base coach. They discuss Franny's paraphrasing of the baseball quotes in the film from Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, Branch Rickey, Rickey Henderson and Yogi Berra. Ellen, scarred from REVERSE THE CURSE, has some trauma around the amount of Yankee content in a Massachusetts-based movie, which gets the scouts into a heated conversation. They talk about the definition and history of the eephus pitch, discussing Rip Sewell, Maurice van Robays, Ted Williams, Fernando Abad, Luis Tiant, Yu Darvish, Steve Hamilton, Phil Niekro, Dave LaRoche, Carlos Zambrano, Vicente Padilla, Satchel Paige, Clayton Kershaw, Rich Hill, Zack Greinke, Brock Holt, and, of course, Bill Lee. A small sidebar on position players pitching, and a longer dive into some delightful Easter eggs with Bill Lee's appearance in the film, and its magical realism. In Storytelling (1:03:45), our scouts discuss the tradition of slow cinema and how that applies to EEPHUS. They marvel at the way information is skillfully planted for the audience to put together, and appreciate the even-handedness of the depictions of the teams, if with some disagreements about the way the audience's empathy is guided. The fact that no one else besides the men involved care much about the game feels important, as does the fall setting, and this season as a thematic character. They discuss the film's relationship of comedy to tragedy. Brennan brings up GOODBYE DRAGON INN, and thinking about transcendental filmmaking leads to a conversation about being present, acting, baseball, time, mortality, and the spiritual exercise of play. The metaphor of the fireworks is explored. The Score Tool (1:51:26) discusses Carson Lund's percussive score and the use of radio as background scoring. In Acting (1:56:56) they discuss the performances of Russell J. Gannon, Cliff Blake, Keith William Richards, David Torres Jr., Ray Hryb, Peter Minkarah, David Pridemore, Theodore Bouloukos, Ethan Ward, Patrick Garrigan, Conner Marx, Brendan Burt, and the commendable evenness of tone across the whole ensemble. Delightfulness of Catcher Character (2:09:28) discusses the performances of John R. Smith, Jr, as John and Chris Goodwin as Garrett. Brennan is vulnerable with a personal trial that mirrors a moment in the film. Delightfulness of Announcer (2:22:23) considers the presences of Frederick Wiseman and Joe Castiglione. Lack of Misogyny (2:26:00) addresses Bobby's light moment of misogyny, balancing the film's intent with lack of full female characters. They also discuss the film's view of male friendship and male loneliness. No spoilers on the following segments: Yes or No (2:36:26) Six Degrees of Baseball (2:40:49) Favorite Moment (2:41:10) Least Favorite Moment (2:45:50) Scene We'd Like to See (2:46:01) Dreamiest Player (2:48:20) Favorite Performance (2:49:40). Bryan Kohberger's defense team has recently filed motions to suppress certain evidence ahead of his August 11, 2025, trial for the 2022 murders of four University of Idaho students. A former FBI special agent characterized these efforts as attempts to create an "illusion" of a weak prosecution case, aiming to influence potential jurors. The defense sought to exclude terms like "psychopath" and "sociopath" from the trial, a request partially granted by Judge Steven Hippler, who ruled such labels require expert validation. Additionally, the defense's motion to omit Kohberger's 2020 essay on crime scene handling was denied, and the judge indicated that the 911 call from the victims' roommate would likely be admitted, albeit possibly in a redacted formThe defense also argued that prosecutors were delaying discovery, a claim undermined when they acknowledged receiving all requested materials. Experts suggest these tactics aim to delay proceedings and cast doubt on the prosecution's case. Former FBI agent Jonathan Gilliam noted that the defense appears more focused on portraying the prosecution's case as insufficient rather than asserting Kohberger's innocence. Similarly, former D.C. homicide detective Ted Williams observed that the defense is employing a strategy of challenging various aspects of the case, hoping to find elements that might resonate with the jury.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:Bryan Kohberger case: Fmr FBI agent says defense is trying to create 'illusion' | Fox NewsBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-moscow-murders-and-more--5852883/support.

In honor of The New Yorker's centennial this year, the magazine's staff writers are pulling out some classics from the long history of the publication. Louisa Thomas, The New Yorker's sports correspondent, naturally gravitated to a story about baseball with a title only comprehensible to baseball aficionados: “Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu.” The essay was by no less a writer than the author John Updike, and the “Kid” of the title was Ted Williams, the Hall of Fame hitter who spent nineteen years on the Boston Red Sox. By happenstance, Updike joined the crowd at Fenway Park for Williams's last game before his retirement, in 1960. Thomas, looking at subtle word changes that Updike made as he was working on the piece, reflects on the writer's craft and the ballplayer's. “Marginal differences really matter,” she says. “And it's those marginal differences that are the difference between a pop-up, a long fly, and a home run. Updike really understood that, and so did Williams.”Plus, a visit with one of the great modern practitioners of the earworm, Charles Strouse, who wrote music for “Bye Bye Birdie” and “Annie,” and the theme to “All in the Family.” Strouse died this month at ninety-six. In one of his last interviews he gave, in 2023, he spoke with the Radio Hour's Jeffrey Masters about his rivalry with Stephen Sondheim. “Stephen and I were friendly enemies. He didn't like me much. I didn't like him less.”
On this week's episode, we begin with a Memorial Day tribute to former MLB players who served in the military, and debate if Ted Williams would have been the greatest hitter of all-time had it not been for his service. From there, we discuss Jayson Stark's Quarter Century team of the 2000s, make our own teams, and discuss the top-ten position players of the last twenty-five years. From there, we discuss Jose Alvarado's PED suspension, Jean Segura's retirement, the difficulty of cutting fan-favorites, and the career of Bill Freehan.

SEASON 3 EPISODE 121: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL COMMENT: The District Attorney for New Orleans Jason Williams must indict and issue arrest warrants for Tom Homan, Kristi Noem (Now With 8 Action Adventure Dress-Up Outfits) and the other members of the ICE Gestapo who disappeared a two-year old New Orleans born girl and sent her to Honduras - possibly making up a story that her Honduran-born mother wanted to take her with her - AND also abducted and renditioned a four-year old US Citizen toddler with Stage 4 Medication and sent her and her mother to Honduras, too. The charges should be led by Child Trafficking, kidnapping, violation of 5th and 14th Amendment rights, and be predicated on the fact that ICE has degenerated into a violent gang threatening the safety of Americans. Throw the RICO act at the Brownshirts. The event was so egregious, so redolent of Moral Cannibalism, that the Trump Appointee judge who brought the case to public attention and tried to stop it referred in his writings to their plane being above "The Gulf of America." But he also voiced his "strong suspicion that the government just deported a U.S. citizen with no meaningful process." Indictments of Noem and the others may be fruitless. But it will at least symbolize that democracy will at least fight back against what Trump is doing: which is verging on Ethnic Cleansing. MEANWHILE IN WISCONSIN the ICE stormtroopers who arrested a judge in her courtroom for not collaborating with a raid should themselves be arrested. And unlike Trump, authorities there will not have to fabricate or pervert laws to do so. PLUS I'll analyze Trump's sudden pathetic pleadings to Putin, his bat guano crazy interview with Time, and most imperatively, his writing that he suspects Putin is "just tapping me along." There is no indication anywhere that this phrase "tapping me along" has ever been used by anybody else, ever. There is every indication Trump's mind may have now degenerated further into the stage where he is making up his own words and phrases. B-Block (36:00) Dedicated to Karoline Leavitt whose first and last names both contain the letters for the word "lie." Trump himself gets a bronze for boasting about spending $58,000 of his own money on behalf of the country while he syphons off millions daily. The runner-up is Ed Martin and his embrace, then disengagement, from the world's stupidest looking Hitler cosplayer. But the winner again is Bill Maher, who perpetuates his career-ending decision to go to the White House for dinner with Trump. He claims Larry David's soon-to-be-Pulitzer-Prize winning satire of the event has insulted "six million dead Jews" because of the comparison between Trump and Hitler: "I think the minute you play the ‘Hitler’ card, you’ve lost the argument." Ooops. It's a shame Bill's memory is so damaged. Guess who played the Hitler card, made the comparison to Trump, and thus presumably lost the argument? Twice? On his own show? IN 2015? C-Block (46:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Someone mentioned the great Cornell astronomer and planetary scientist and 26-time Tonight Show guest Carl Sagan and I was flashed back. Sure enough, it was 47 years ago last week that he won a Pulitzer Prize. Our Cornell radio station called him for an interview and he said yes, on one condition: "Is your sportscaster Keith there? I want him to do it. He gets it." This would be the first time I ever interviewed anybody famous, and he requested me, even though we'd never met. I'm as stunned now as I was then, and I'll explain why it happened. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Hello, Kaiju Lovers! Nate and Jet move on to jolly ol' England for the penultimate stop on the Monster Island World Tour, but it's to discuss the sleaziest of the 1961 European kaiju movies: Konga. Thankfully, Nate is joined by the co-hosts of the podcast Record All Monsters (and...fugitives...?), who un-ironically like this movie. While it's a King Kong "knockoff," the studio paid RKO $25,000 for the rights. Not to mention, aside from featuring a giant gorilla (for 15 minutes) who carries humans in his hand, it has almost nothing in common with Kong. But hey, it has Michael Gough (aka Alfred Pennyworth) in it! The Toku Topic, appropriately, is the mad scientist archetype. "Jimmy's Notes" on this episode COMING SOON! Send us a textWe have finally arrived to the final day on the trail for George H. W. Bush , Bill Clinton, and Ross Perot. It had been an election for the history books, as hard a fought battle as I had ever witnessed in my then short lifetime. You could not have asked for more formidable candidates to face each other than the three men who had shared the national stage together over the past year. Each with enormous strengths and each with well thought out strategies for victory on that first November tuesday. In this episode we will visit in on the final two rallies of the 1992 election for Bill Clinton and George H. W. Bush. We could not find a final rally for Ross Perot as we combed our videos and the internet, so for that we apologize. What will stand out to our audience we think is the final Bush rally because it will feature for the final time , the old guard of politics and entertainment standing on stage with President Bush in Houston. For many of them this was their final Presidential campaign as the leadership of the nation. The President will be joined by Charlton Heston, Ted Williams, The Gatlin Brothers, Naomi Judd, and the legendary entertainer Bob Hope. The last hoorah for a generation of American leadership in both politics and entertainment. The next day George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Ross Perot would face the voters from sea to shining sea. Similarly, former D.C. homicide detective Ted Williams observed that the defense is employing a strategy of challenging various aspects of the case, hoping to find elements that might resonate with the jury.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:Bryan Kohberger case: Fmr FBI agent says defense is trying to create 'illusion' | Fox News
Hello, Kaiju Lovers! This episode was five years in the making for executive producer Damon Noyes—so he talked for five hours! He's been clamoring for all his favorite podcasts to cover the infamous Danish kaiju movie, Reptilicus (1961/1962), which became something of an icon in spite of itself. But good things come to those who wait, because now Vinegar Syndrome has released a new 4K blu-ray that includes both the American and Danish versions—complete with the notorious “Tilicus” song! Yes, Reptilicus was a pseudo-musical in Denmark! Nate and Damon had so much to get into, including a Toku Topic on biological regeneration, that this now holds the record for longest MIFV episode. This stop on the Monster Island World Tour was so long, your hosts almost missed the rest of a convention for Reptilicus fans in Tivoli Gardens called Repti-Con! Hello, Kaiju Lovers…and welcome, Listeners with Attitude! Nate takes advantage of his short time back on the Island to produce a Patreon-sponsored episode requested by first-time MIFV MAX member Andrew Wynja “The Ninja,” who picked the Power Rangers: Time Force VHS “Clash for Control.” So, naturally, Nate couldn't do this without his former Power Trip co-host Michael Hamilton. These episodes feature the first appearance of Wynja's favorite Zord, the amazing mecha-dinosaur Quantasaurus Rex (or Q-Rex), and Nate's Power Ranger “man crush,” Eric Myers, in an epic time travel adventure. But the reason Wynja chose this VHS edition of the episodes is because this was before they were censored in light of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Tune to hear about this and more! “Time for…Time Force!” Featuring Andrew Wynja as Frax. Jimmy's Notes on this episode COMING SOON! On February 27, we received the very sad and mysterious news that the world had lost a movie icon with Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa, and one of their three dogs. The Santa Fe police department is still investigating and the case is still not ruling out the possibility of foul play. Hackman will always be remembered as an actor that can fit any role and could make it Oscar worthy. From the tough 1971 tough cop, "Popeye" Doyle in The French Connection, which earned him his first Academy Award for best actor, to the evil sheriff Little Bill Daggett in his role in "Unforgiving" which he earned his second Oscar for best supporting actor. Hackman will always be remembered for always being a gentleman and one of the greatest humans as well. While at the top of his career, Hackman decided to walk away from Hollywood, just like some of the greats in sports, like Ted Williams, Barry Sanders, Jim Brown. The GURU TALKIN SPORTS podcast, salute Hackman and sends our deepest condolences to his family. We will be back next week with Episode 259.
