Leads are filling out your forms, your phone is ringing, and your inbox is busy, but your calendar still has open spots.

Innovation is everywhere, but the majority of what consumers see is incremental change. What does it mean to do something meaningfully different? Lasso is attempting to answer that question. In this episode, CEO Mike Messersmith, the former Oatly executive who helped turn oat milk into a cultural phenomenon, shares how his company is rethinking food from the ground up with breakthrough technology that delivers high-protein, clean-label snacks without compromise.  From its origins as a plant-based meat startup to launching creative new brands like Cronch Club and Froobies, Lasso is using its proprietary process to challenge the limits of taste, texture, and nutrition – while aiming to power the next wave of innovation across the entire food industry. Show notes: 0:20: Mike Messersmith, CEO, Lasso – Mike discusses the launch of Oatly in the U.S. and how the company's strategy of creating a no-compromise product experience – particularly within the specialty coffee landscape – as key to driving widespread adoption and category growth. He talks about how he's applying similar principles to Lasso and how the former plant-based meat company pivoted as market dynamics shifted, expanding its technology into broader applications that enable high-protein, high-fiber, clean-label foods without relying on traditional processing methods or additives. Mike explains that the company's consumer brands serve as proof-of-concept products that demonstrate the technology's potential across categories such as snacks and fruit chews, while also helping refine product-market fit through direct-to-consumer channels. He emphasizes that Lasso sits at the intersection of food and technology, aiming to solve consumer demand for better nutrition, taste, and transparency by innovating at the manufacturing level rather than just formulation. Mike reveals that the company's long-term vision is to partner with established food manufacturers, licensing its technology to enable a new generation of products, while leveraging its own brands to showcase what's possible and build credibility with both consumers and investors. He explains how to use paid marketing, strong offers, and a frictionless funnel to create consistent lead flow, beat churn, and turn your gym growth into a predictable process instead of a monthly guessing game.Episode OutlineThe hidden reality of gym ownership: long hours, tight margins, and member churn canceling out new sign-ups  Why relying on organic marketing, referrals, and “just get better systems” keeps gyms stuck at 100–150 members  How big franchises open with hundreds of members by paying for attention, not waiting to be discovered  Why owning a gym is such an easy entry business—and why that makes your local market brutally competitive  The core problem: a lack of consistent, predictable lead flow rather than a lack of effort or coaching quality  Building a basic marketing funnel: from ad to lead, from lead to appointment, from appointment to paying member  Crafting a strong, valuable offer that clearly communicates why someone should act now  Removing friction in your funnel so joining feels as easy and familiar as buying on Amazon  Lead nurture that works: fast follow-up, human connection, and why calls still matter  The power of speed-to-lead and what it means for your close rate  Using math instead of emotion: understanding CAC and forecasting growth from your ad spend  Why depending on referrals and “good months” is a dangerous way to run your gym  Turning marketing into a repeatable process you can scale to dominate your local area  Episode Chapters00:00 Intro – Welcome to Gym Marketing Made Simple00:28 The Reality of Being a Gym Owner01:25 Hitting the 100–150 Member Ceiling02:10 Why Organic Marketing Isn't Enough03:05 Competing With Franchises That “Pay for Attention”03:52 Building a Simple, Frictionless Marketing Funnel04:40 Lead Nurture and Speed-to-Lead05:23 Using Data and CAC to Make Predictable Decisions06:20 The Danger of Relying on Referrals Alone07:15 Choosing Predictable Growth Over Guesswork08:10 Invitation to Book a Call With Lasso08:44 Outro and Final MessageAction TakenInvite listeners to book a free call with Lasso to audit their current marketing and lead flow  Direct listeners to lassoFramework.com to learn more about done-for-you paid marketing for gyms  Encourage gym owners to shift from referral dependence to data-driven paid acquisition  Challenge listeners to measure and track their customer acquisition cost (CAC) before scaling spendConclusionPaid marketing provides boutique gyms with predictable lead flow, higher conversion rates, and a clear path to growth. Stop killing your gym ads after a bad week. Learn how to read your numbers, ride out slow seasons, and let Facebook's algorithm actually work for you—so your best campaigns can finally scale instead of getting shut off too soon. Welcome to Gym Marketing Made Simple, the show focused on cutting through the noise around gym growth. Each episode centers on practical marketing, sales, and leadership systems that help boutique gyms build steady momentum without guesswork or constant outreach.Episode Highlights In today's episode, Blake breaks down how to structure, fund, and optimize Facebook ad campaigns for boutique gyms so you stop guessing, stop restarting the learning phase, and start making decisions based on real conversion data, especially when seasons, holidays, and human behavior get in the way. Episode Outline Why simple ad structures (1–2 campaigns, 2–4 ad sets) outperform overbuilt accounts  How budget controls Facebook's learning phase and how long to let ads run  The rule of spending 2–4x client value before killing a campaign  Why $1,000–$1,500/month is a realistic baseline for local gym ads  Reading results in 14-day windows—and when to zoom out to 30 days  How spring break, holidays, weather, and school schedules skew performance Why cost per lead is not the only (or best) metric to judge campaigns  Keeping “expensive” ads that close high-quality members  When to leave a winning campaign alone and launch a fresh test campaign  Smart ways to expand your audience: age, targeting, radius, and ideal size - How to think about rural markets vs. urban markets  Dialing in creative to the age groups that are actually opting in  The “gold standard” funnel metrics from lead to close  Fixing your sales and funnel before blaming “bad” leads  Using frequency to decide when an ad is truly worn out  Episode Chapters00:00 Intro & Podcast Purpose00:30 Why Simple Ad Structures Work Best01:20 Budgets, Learning Phase, and When to Turn Ads Off03:12 Reading Results in 14- and 30-Day Windows04:20 Human Behavior, Seasons, and “Slow” Weeks05:40 Judging Campaigns by Cost per Lead vs. Closed Clients07:43 Expanding Targeting: Age, Interests, and Audience Size09:10 Urban vs. Rural Targeting and Radius Expansion10:10 Dialing Creative to the Ages That Opt In11:10 Funnel Metrics: Lead to Consult, Show, and Close Rates12:26 Frequency, Ad Fatigue, and When to Kill a Creative13:28 Final Recommendations and Call to ActionAction Taken Run 1–2 core campaigns with 2–4 ad sets optimized for leads.  Set a consistent monthly ad budget in the $1,000–$1,500 range where possible.  Review campaign performance in 14-day windows; use 30 days around major events.  Keep high-quality, higher-cost campaigns live and test cheaper leads in separate campaigns.  Expand age ranges, relax tight targeting, and widen radius by 1–3 miles to grow audience size.  Track conversion rates through the full funnel before touching winning ads.  Monitor frequency and shut off creatives that are over 10+ views and no longer producing.  Conclusion This episode shows that winning gym marketing is less about hacking Facebook and more about respecting data, time frames, and human behavior. When you keep your structure simple, fund your campaigns properly, and judge success by closed clients instead of just cheap leads, you give Facebook enough room to find your best prospects and give your gym a dependable growth engine instead of a reset button every few weeks. CTA If you're ready to stop guessing with your ads and want a clear plan for your gym, book a free call with the Lasso team and dial in a campaign that can actually scale.

Episode SummaryIn this episode of Lassoing Leadership, Jason Rogers and Garth Nichols sit down with Drew Dudley to explore a simple but powerful idea: leadership isn't defined by titles or big moments — it's shaped by the small behaviors we practice every single day.Drawing from his book This Is Day One, Drew shares the mental models, questions, and habits that help leaders move from intention to impact. The conversation centers on the idea that leadership is not something we wait to grow into. Instead, it's something we practice daily through decisions, behaviors, and the values we choose to live out in the moment.Drew reflects on personal stories that shaped his thinking about leadership and offers practical ways leaders can rethink their influence. From the importance of recognizing small moments of impact to the discipline of grounding decisions in values, the conversation highlights how meaningful leadership often grows out of everyday choices.Jason, Garth, and Drew also explore the idea of “Day One” leadership — the mindset that every day presents a new opportunity to lead with purpose. The discussion moves into the role of reflective questions, overcoming leadership paralysis, and finding the courage to act even when the path forward feels uncertain. It's a thoughtful conversation about habits, humility, and how leaders can create lasting impact by focusing on the behaviors that matter most — one day at a time.TopicsLeadership, Daily Habits, Values-Based Leadership, Impact, Drew Dudley, This Is Day One, Leadership Development, Behavioral Change, Leadership QuestionsTake AwaysLeadership as daily behavior grounded in valuesThe concept of “Day One” leadershipThe impact of small actions and decisionsMental models for effective leadershipReflective questions that drive meaningful leadership behaviorLeadership impact is created through consistent daily behaviors.Values should guide decisions, especially when leadership becomes complex.Reflective questions help leaders move from intention to action.Every day offers a fresh opportunity to lead with purpose.“Every day is a new opportunity to lead.”“Fight addiction one day at a time.”“Keep leading the Lasso way.”Chapters00:00 — Introduction to Everyday Leadership06:05 — The Concept of Day One09:22 — Personal Stories and Insights12:08 — Leadership and Legacy15:13 — Behavior and Values in Leadership17:59 — Overcoming Leadership Paralysis21:10 — Making Leadership Impactful24:45 — Navigating Fear and Empathy in Leadership27:02 — The Power of Reflective Questions29:02 — Experiments in Leadership and Impact30:55 — Decision-Making and Values32:45 — The Complexity of Leadership36:39 — Ted Lasso as a Leadership Case Study

“It's not until you're leading an ensemble that you really figure out how to make the music happen and how to motivate the people around you. It's humbling in a lot of ways, and it's so gratifying. As a conductor, you're providing the framework for musicians to do their best work. Both in the way that you structure rehearsal and the gestures that you are showing the music through, you're creating a scaffolding, inviting people in, and collaborating together. Ideally, you're creating a situation where everybody has ownership of the musical process and the musical result as well.”Grant Gershon currently celebrates his 25th season as the Kiki and David Gindler Artistic Director of the Los Angeles Master Chorale, which he has turned into the "best-by-far major chorus in America” (Los Angeles Times). Earlier in 2026, Grant and the Chorale were honored to receive their second Grammy™ Award for Best Choral Performance, and they have been nominated 3 times in the last 5 years in this category. In 2025 the Chorale was featured on the Academy Awards ceremony, broadcast to over 19 million viewers around the world.A champion of new music, Grant led the world premiere of John Adams' Girls of the Golden West at the San Francisco Opera. He also conducted its European premier at the Dutch National Opera. As Resident Conductor of LA Opera, Grant conducted the West Coast premiere of Philip Glass's Satyagraha, and he led the world premiere of Daniel Catán's Il Postino, subsequently released on Sony Classical Records.Among the highpoints of his tenure with the LA Master Chorale, he twice opened the famed Salzburg Festival—with Orlando di Lasso's Lagrime di San Pietro in 2019 and Heinrich Schütz' Music to Accompany a Departure in 2023. He and the Chorale also performed these works to enormous acclaim in London, Paris, Montreal, Toronto, Chicago and New Zealand.Grant's discography with the Chorale includes recordings of music by Billy Childs, Nico Muhly, Henrik Gorecki, David Lang, and Steve Reich. He has also led the Chorale in performances for motion picture soundtracks, including, at the request of John Williams, Star Wars: The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker. In New York, Grant has appeared at Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall and Trinity Wall Street. Other major appearances include performances at the Ravinia, Aspen, Edinburgh, Helsinki, Salzburg, and Vienna festivals; Teatro Colon in Buenos Aries, the Barbican in London and the Paris Philharmonie. He has worked closely with numerous legendary conductors, including Claudio Abbado, Pierre Boulez, Gustavo Dudamel, Zubin Mehta, Simon Rattle, and his mentor, Esa-Pekka Salonen. To get in touch with Grant, you can email him at ggershon@lamasterchorale.org or find him on Instagram (@the_gershmeister).Email choirfampodcast@gmail.com to contact our hosts.Podcast music from Podcast.coPhoto in episode artwork by Trace Hudson

Noah Kaplan of Leon Speakers and Mothfire Brewing Company recently joined us as one of our guests for a special live State of Water podcast recording at Leon Loft in Ann Arbor.

Noah shares about his lifelong love for water and nature, from his early days growing up in New York by the ocean and seeing the impacts of pollution to now living in Michigan and appreciating the essential need for clean water in a different way as a brewer. We hear about Noah's unexpected journey into entrepreneurship and how arts, culture, and creativity are at the heart of both Leon Speakers and Mothfire Brewing. Noah reflects on his deep belief in the power of collaboration to support learning and growth, and gives a glimpse at what's coming in the near future for Leon Speakers and Mothfire as they continue to bring people together and awaken creativity.
